    About Us:
We are a homeschool and homesteading family of 6 that farms our 1 acre permaculture organic acre in WA State. We are currently building on our new 20 acre homestead in North Idaho. We garden, seed save, raise meat rabbits, raise chickens, process our own meat, save our own seed, can, bake, and do just about everything that we can ourselves to achieve a self sufficient and debt free life for our family.

Build the barn, park the Camper in the barn, make a bathroom in the barn. so you have no costs to make an apartment, and the camper is protected from the weather. I would do it. And look forward to the videos that you will make!👍💕

No way, not with 4 kids! There can't even all sit down at the same time, and we homeschool. I want to provide them some normalcy, so it's living space or we don't go. We will keep the space very simple, but they need a place to play while we are busy building. If it were just Jeremy and I then that would be the plan, but not with 6 people.

@@GoodSimpleLiving You seem to think campers are all small. We used a 36 footer for a cabin once and it was pretty big, especially with a huge screened in porch. Had it hooked up to utilities too.

Good Simple Living... We all have our limits to what we are WILLING to do, but debt free living in the RV with 4 homeschooled kids is totally doable. We homeschooled our 4 children start to finish. When they were teenagers, we sold our house at the peak of the market (2006), and moved into an RV (along with our golden retriever). For the first 4 years, we “road schooled” them for 6 months a year, and prepared the land for construction the other 6 months when weather was nicer. Instead of a pole barn, we built a 12x24 shed (now a chicken coop) for about $2500 to store our household items (tip: Downsize! Sell all your non-heirloom/sentimental furniture before you move, you’ll probably want something different/nicer in the new house). The last year of our 5 year project (where you are now) is when we built our off-grid house. We moved into a dried-in shell at the end of summer, cooked on a Coleman, continued to work on it as time and money allowed, and sold the RV to help fund further construction. It’s all doable, but I wouldn’t spend money on the pole barn until the house is done. You’ll be glad you have that extra 50-60k cushion, I assure you! One last tip: If you are considering off-grid living, be sure to SUPER INSULATE (and properly ventilate) your house. Thick walls, spray-in foam insulation, energy star windows and doors, standing seam metal roof .. I could go on and on. We love living off-grid and having complete independence. Seeing some of your videos, I’m sure you will, too!

My wife and I purchased a 15 acre ranch in North Idaho in 2018. Old uninhabitable cabin with power but no septic. We currently are seasonal residents, live in a fifth wheel during the summer. We built a 32 x 40 pole barn. I retired when we bought the ranch and bought a bandsaw mill. The plan is to provide a small income from the mill. Up to this point, our journeys have been the same. You are now ahead of us on building now. Your family seems to all be on the same page so the togetherness is priceless. I say option A and get started. Once you have a better living Winter living quarter you can build the house slowly to prolong the $$.

@@GoodSimpleLiving if ur worried about the market then pay very close attention to ( i hate to say this) politics, market trends in housing and commodities and also look at the PAST. History will tell us usually the most predictable pattern and what can we expect of these circumstances. Id say if ur property u live in is currently valued at exponentially more than what u paid, that's a gift that could be fleeting. In Idaho does working remotely via computer seem an option for anyone. Melissa you could be an online instructor getting paid for credit hours. Frugal Fit Mom does online instruction from home. She's also on youtube and has discussed her and her hubbys decisions to move, change careers and getting out of debt.

Just a little story about us. When we moved to Idaho almost 15 years ago, all we had was a Suzuki Aerio, which was like driving a go cart on the freeway, and 1k dollars to our name. We actually had an almost $300 dollar payment on the car because neither of us had credit, and we overpaid for the car and got into a bad lone. Oh yea, Lisa was also pregnant. 15 years later, we are off grid and debt free. You guys will make the right decision for YOU. Cant wait to call you guys neighbors!

  • @Ubastis
    @Ubastis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

So this is a jumble of thoughts I jotted down while listening to your video.
First and foremost I would start the pole barn build and electricity immediately since you have the money, regardless of if you move in spring of 2020 or 2021. This gives you the ability to start moving some of the nonessential household items out there asap. Though honestly I don’t see any reason to wait an extra year, as there isn’t much of a financial gain doing so and like you said it’s a large gamble on the housing market.
Can and preserve as much food now as possible and possibly stretch what your family currently eats. Start building a nest egg of food from your current gardens. Also, is it possible to transplant mature plants to your new farm that way not everything is starting over from seeds?
How much would an apartment in the pole barn cost? Is this an absolute necessity, or is it doable to live out of the camp trailer? I’m not familiar with your trailer, but the ones in my family have had a main bed, 2-3 bunks, a pull out couch, and the dining table and benches fold down into an additional bed.
If it were my build, and I had a camp trailer with enough beds, I would only do a finished, full bathroom in the pole barn and use the camp trailer parked inside the barn for kitchen and sleeping quarters. This makes personal hygiene with the kids much easier, and to our family would be the most important factor with temporary living quarters. Building a full bathroom instead of a whole apartment should save a good amount of money, taking care of your monthly costs that may not be covered by the fluctuation of TH-cam income. You can easily lay out a large rug or carpet, table and chairs, a TV on a stand, to have a living space outside of the trailer where the kids can still do their lessons/schoolwork, everyone can stretch out and relax.
In the long run, having an accessible bathroom in the barn would be a huge bonus when working on the farm, as you won’t have to worry about being dirty, muddy or having bloody hands and having to run into the house to use the toilet. The only upside I see to having a 2 bedroom apartment is if you plan on renting it out later, or having farm hand living quarters.
It sounds like the only concern at this point is monthly carrying costs until you get your gardens established. A part time job would be the most reliable way to take care of this issue while still carrying out your dreams as soon as possible. Even with fluctuating income from TH-cam, making just $1,000/mo from a part time job should take the burden off of any low point in ad revenue and the like, I would think.

    • @GoodSimpleLiving
      @GoodSimpleLiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Turing it into an air BNB is for sure an option. To me the extra heated space is needed to make this work. I just don't see it as being fair to cram 6 people into a tiny trailer with no room for playing or any toys. This build could easily end up being 18 months, and we want to take our time to do it well, and shop for the best prices on supplies. I totally agree on hygiene!

I’m 73 now, but my kids would have been outside exploring & playing summer or winter. We lived in a small mountain area til “ city people “ started moving in & letting their kids just run amuck… no respect. Hard decision. Do you plan on buying some equipment like a tractor for work around the property and snow removal, that could be expensive.
The biggest problem is the housing market. You could take a big loss if it goes bad and it may take years to come back up.

Ask dave Ramsey. Sounds like you thought of everything. I also heared from other you tubers how they are going through alot of changes so that income maybe won't be there. Check out the hollar homestead they lived in a camper while they looked for land which had a mobile home they are rebuilding. I think option 1 is possible but time flies so follow your dream. You also have your rabbits and can possibly make a small income there. LOL the world is your oyster!! Also maybe you can be a realtor in idaho.

I have a license in Idaho so I may practice RE there as well. I'm not to worried about the YT changes, we aren't a made for kid channel. Problem with just a trailer is we are 6 people, and winters are very cold there. We also are moving our homestead so we have the need for a large building already.

The Hollers Homestead is one place to check out with a family of 6 living in there travel trailer. They're remodeling a trailer to live in debt free.
But Art and Bri is a another family to check out. The 7 of them are in a trailer until they can get the House rebuilt ( mold was found in their home and now they're rebuilding). They hoping next Christmas to be in it.
      Both family live in NC.

@@GoodSimpleLiving I would make your decision based on not having a TH-cam channel. Things are changing very fast and it has nothing to do with the kid policy they enacted. Google/TH-cam is on full board with the UN agenda 2030 policies and what you do goes against it. They do not support individualism, homesteading, taking care of yourself, so I would expect to lose your channel and its coming sooner than you think. You will be labeled as a "climate denier" according to the videos you make.

@@roaringwaves1292 Some people reading your comment are going to ignore it as just another crackpot right wing conspiracy nut. However, I think some of what you say has merit. I do believe TH-cam will be pushing views away from people who live lifestyles like this family. They won't "cancel" them, but they can certainly hurt the channel to the point it makes no sense to continue running it. TH-cam's politics do not want people to be living on acreage and consuming resources in this manner. Even if they are totally green, just taking up more land than they need, having their own ground well etc is enough. I agree, I'd be careful if I was them as well. But they can't do it without TH-cam money. It's literally the only money they will have.

make sure the pole barn is something you'd like to see everyday (
aesthetics matters) , then build the temp apartment in such a way that 'll make it a rentable asset, to be able to give room to people if you end up organizing course/masterclasses on homesteading etc. My point is, whatever you do, do not make it as a "use it onetime then throw away" effort, but plan it so to be able to recycle it as much as possible. I would move in in the summer 2020 :) keep up the great work

I am new to you so I won't presume to know what is in your heart but as an older lady who has been around the block here are a few things I would suggest for you to consider. Find some way to get chickens up there as soon as possible. I use the winter time to build a good garden base. Even if you find a chicken farmer who just needs land to keep them on for a while or weather you get a couple hundred from a chicken farmer getting rid of older hens. Then hire a neighbor to feed them once a week or so. I say this so that when ever you land there you have a place to get your food from. You could even set up a garden next year if you don't move so that in 2021 you already have a good jump on it. I have went from 3/4 million net worth all the way back down to $1600. month income only to realize that if you have food a roof and family then you have all you really need. As far as when should you move that answer is in your heart and God will protect you if you follow your heart with faith! With love and earnest support I wish you all the best and I am hooked for the ride when ever you go.

    Sell and move debt-free.
For the temporary "apartment", look into getting a mobile home unit that you purchase and then move to the site. This can be put in very quickly and allow you to get out of the camper/barn living environment. And you can sell it later to recoup part of the investment for the quick living quarters.
Your YT income is "semi-reliable" and covers likely most of the expenses. Assume that expenses will actually be closer to $3k per month and allow yourself a limited amount of the equity money to be used for that. Even if you lose the YT income, you are looking at no more than 1/4 of the equity money over a 2-year time period and this extra $1k per month will cover semi-unexpected other expenses like tools and supplies for getting yourselves really up and running there. And if your YT income stays steady, you are looking at only spending less than 10% of the equity over 2 years as you establish yourselves in your new homesteading business.
How much is the estimated cost of building your main home that you want to build? Subtract that from your $320k and then allocate HALF of the rest towards giving yourselves some flex room on budgeting and getting your Idaho business off the ground. I would imagine that the house will cost less than $200k? So half of 120k = 60k to invest into getting this to work in the semi-short run. And that would still leave $60k as a backup in case you need to give up and move back to a city and restart there. So now I outline 4 scenarios ranging from worst case to best case...
Assuming (very unrealistic bad case scenario #1), your YT income plummets to zero, this is 2.5 years of living expenses even if during that time you cannot get any food production going. Assuming (semi-unrealistic bad case scenario #2) your YT income gets cut in half, and it takes a full year to get to the point where food costs drop to zero (small purchases at store offset by small sales), this $60k is about 5 years of living expenses. Assuming (realistic scenario #3) your YT income stays steady and you end up with slow scaling to zero cost food within one year, the $60k is able to be invested into a tractor or other tools/equipment that allows your business to become far more profitable by Year-2. Assuming (optimistic scenario #4) your YT income increases slightly to $2500 because of videos about construction adding to your audience on top of a ton of "re-new" content of getting your other stuff back up and running, and you get back to zero-cost food within 6 months, you are already living the dream and watching your savings start climbing.
Really, this is a no-brainer decision. That $320k equity on top of being debt free is a LOT of lee-way for building your main house and getting your business off the ground. And it is very realistic to assume that setting up in a new business in a new state will take 2 years. To be in a position to do so with less than 10% of your savings going into this? Awesome situation.
And do be prepared for this to take 2 years for your business to get off the ground; 3 years to turn profitable enough to pay all the bills without relying on YT income; and 4 years to get to a mostly optimal profit setup where you are really able to stack the $$$. Based on lessons learned from other YT Homesteading channels, when you first start, assume conservatively that your techniques that you have learned to implement in your original location successfully will fail in Year-1; that you will find the new location's "magic answers" sometime in Year-2; that by Year-3 you will have enough production to sell a significant amount but will not have the local business connections to make those sales be at optimal prices(so some profit, but not maximal) and that by Year-4 you will be running at full speed. On the semi-optimistic scenario, you will find the magic answer to replace failing methods in Year-1 and that by Year-2 you will be producing enough for sales and will have made enough contacts/planning to be turning optimal profits by the end of Year-2.
Again, chase your dreams: debt free with a huge amount of starting capital even after the cost of building your dream house, even with a relatively large chunk (~$50k+?) set aside as a worst-case reserve to get back to the city-rat-race if everything fails. You guys are in a very enviable situation.

We have been working towards the same goals as you are! We are dealing with the some of the same challenges. It's scary! You are in a better position then we are.
That being said option A with a little twist sounds best.
Sell the truck and pay cash for a lesser truck (AKA Dave Ramsey) and take the extra money and use it towards the apartment build out.
When you build the apartment try to make it more of a commercial kitchen layout or any easy conversion to a commercial kitchen. That way it's not wasted money and the space will have a purpose after the house is built. If it's a commercial kitchen that can meet Idaho state requirements for processing small livestock, you could have another potential revenue stream later. You could process rabbits, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and quail, and offer them for sale within the state of Idaho. Got to get to that $2000 or more a month!
Have you thought of building a loft for the bedrooms in the shop? One of the bedrooms could be converted into a hatching room after the house is built. You could set up some incubators and start hatching out baby chicks, ducks, and goslings. You could keep some for yourself and sell off the extras. More revenue!
Whatever the size of the shop you think you need it's not big enough...Make it bigger LOL! Trust me on this one! Also another mistake we made was not enough electrical in the shop! Wire the shop for extra power outlets... lots of power outlets and on different circuits! That's a mistake we made in our current shop with trying to run 2 freezers, 2 fridges, electric water bowls for livestock, battery operated tools, led lights, heaters ect..
No matter what you do all 11 of us at Harper Family Farm's in Boise Idaho wish you good luck and can't wait to follow you on your journey!

I love that advice!! Turning it into a commercial processing facility is actually a great idea since that was on my list of things to do anyhow. We also thought of using the space as a place for livestock guardian dogs to get out of the weather via one room with collar operated doggie doors. We will also need insulated storage for horse tack, and probably others things that will need added protection. Thank you for the shop advice. Lots of outlets, lots of circuits!

Ugh! Bring on the hives!! For me that is, and I start hearing the voice of my grandfather, who lived life "By the seat of his pants", saying "If it weren't for IF your Aunt would be your Uncle"!! But I am almost positive if he had of took time to write out a "Bucket list" it would have been all checked off and probably more added as accomplished! So no regrets or remorse, I'm sure. And I loved that about him and envied him for it. ME on the other hand,......NOT EVEN CLOSE!!
So I'm sorry for offering no answers, but I do have a couple of questions that may be used as suggestions??.....
I should say first I've never stayed in an RV or an apartment, (so for the random reader please be kind if this comes out as complete "stupidity", pleeaase)
When y'all do make the move and start the apartment build, would it be feasible, since you do have the RV, to make a weather resistant connection between the apartment and RV, in order to save on kitchen and bathroom purchase by utilizing what is already in place, and only add inside the apartment what would compliment those areas to make them more comfortable? Especially, since it's only temporary and going to only be used as storage in the future. Hope that came out right?
I am praying for confirmation to be given, without any lingering doubts, when you have chosen the only path meant for y'all to travel, and I pray that y'all are blocked and not allowed even a single step in the direction of the wrong path, Dear God I humbly ask these things in your son, Jesus Christ's name. Amen
Much Love and Admiration, God bless.

Thank you thank you thank you for that prayer Sue! Yes we plan to park the trailer inside the barn so we can use both. That will be our bathroom and shower until we get the pole barn all squared away. When we bought the big farm (211 acres, two houses, six wells and tons of outbuildings) we opted to build an apartment in the 7500 sq ft shop. We could have gotten by with a travel trailer in the shop. My advice to you is to go whole hog and forge ahead. That is what we've always done and never regretted it even though we had numerous serious obstacles. As you mentioned you only live once so you have limited time to make your dreams come true.
