1:16 One note here, for some reason, TF2 switches your usage between CPU and GPU based on what quality the textures/models are set to. So if you have a good GPU and a fair CPU, TF2 will actually run *worse* if you lower the textures because the CPU is doing the major power-heavy stuff.
so if I run on high settings, it will run better? or am I just thinking this incorrectly

When I tried to decide problem of low gpu usage I heard a line "put your shadows to high, your gpu will be used more than before." I was thinking like "What? What the point? Most of the pro players play with low." But... Seems like this is it. Source uses for high setting your gpu and for low your cpu. What a bullshit actually
@@fella_named_smokey btw, I checked it and I actually got more fps with some high settings on low. The problem is my cpu bottleneck, so actually I HAVE to play on high just to not worry about optimizing my game. Still the game just doesn't use my gpu overall and with low on gpu using settings it goes even worse

Kelp you should search up how to optimize your operating system for gaming and get a graphics config like master config or comanglia for the best performance you can get

Just to give a heads up, mat_mipmaptextures 0 may render important or noteworthy parts of some maps as invisible, which could be a nuisance. Ons cp_well for instance, the rails on the stairs at last aren't visible, and confused me for a moment when I couldn't move forward. It could mess up some movement or a shot.

The antivirus exception increased HUGELY my fps man. This damn windows antivirus sniffs not once every little thing on my computer but instead it does twice. Now i can open my tf2 in seconds and i close it in seconds and when i press the windows button it doesn't freeze the entire toaster, i mean my computer.

@@Danger-Tater lod stands for level of detail. this technology is employed so that up close, you can see highly detailed models while far away models have lower poly counts since you can't see them well at that distance anyway. r_lod 0 disables this and always displays the base, high poly models.

When you use the -threads command, remember that cores are counted up from 0. So if you have 8 cores, write: -threads 7, because the cores are counted 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

@@wandowander9360 You should probably put it in your config. Go to your TF2 folder, tf, then cfg. If you don't have a config, then copy one of the existing cfg files, rename it, and empty it. Then just put the command there. Then go to TF2 launch options in Steam, and type "+exec (name).cfg". The config files in there are essentially what is typed into the console when you start the game. It's done automatically. And you should generally download an existing config. I recommend mastercomfig. I use that, and have my own cfg config to change some other settings myself.

@@wandowander9360 Sorry for the late reply, as the person above me said, you can just put it in the console, but then you'd have to type it in there every time you launch the game. It would be better to just type it in a cfg file, because essentially, everything inside of there, is automatically typed into the console on launch. It may sound a bit complicated at first, but it's all pretty easy once you get it.

Also, thanks to both of you for this great video, my FPS was horrendous, my settings at the lowest possible but barely getting 25 FPS. Now my CPU and GPU is not running at 30% when TF2 is running!

while i cant say this helped me a lot, as most of the stuff you guys said to disable is stuff i like to keep on and my computer is strong enough to run tf2 on max settings good enough for me to enjoy, the mat_mipmaptextures is something i didnt know about and is a great thing to have.

@「DΞzGυηηer」 vsync is completely useless, noone uses it in tf2 intentionally, as for the other stuff; as i mentioned in my comment, i keep it on because i like them and my pc is good enough to run them without problems

@Scout Face you need to put it in a notepad file named "autoexec" in your cfg folder found in the tf folder. You paste all the commands inside that file so that they automatically execute everytime you boot up the game

8:13 Actually it is less about render tasks, but more about handling internet packets. More players = more packets = more handling processes = much lower FPS.

Nice tutorial delfy, helped me a lot, but if you have problems with overheating CPU, then dont use mat_queue_mode 2, it will overheat your CPU even more and then you will get even more lags

I know this video is from 2 years ago but I just wanted to say thank you so much, thanks to your video my game that used to run only at 40 FPS and below now was able to now be at 60 FPS and above and I just wanted to thank you so much!
It's literally the only fps config that worked after for so many of me playing TF2. Back then I just relied on chrisconfig for about a year because my specs wasn't the greatest but now I upgraded to a budget gaming pc yet it still bottlenecks. I found this vidro,now...no bottlenecks

tf2 is not gpu heavy as the source engine is fuckin old as my ass. Most old engines were cpu heavy because gpus fuckin sucked back in the day
If your only hitting 40 fps with a 1050ti that's rather a cpu bottleneck or something else. My laptop has a 1050 in it and I get a constant 70+ with all the settings maxed at 1080p
@@greenalien9781 TF2 is not optimized for GTX 1000 series or newer cards. GTX 900 series is newest that run TF2 really well. here is funny joke, TF2 runs better on GTX 680 than GTX 1080. and other old games runs better on GTX 680. only gpu changes nothing else in my system. GTX 1080 around 80fps most of the time, GTX 680 150-200fps. 1080p max settings in TF2.
@@greenalien9781 you only get 70? I have a 1050 overclocked with an i5 9300h and I can play tf2 at the highest settings even with 27 players with over 100 99% of the time.

lowering your settings can actually lead to the game putting more processes on your cpu than the gpu. I actually had to set my settings higher to get more fps

Using mat_queue_mode to force more core usage is completely false. Same with forcing more threads from the launch options.
TF2 already, in its current state, distributes threads across cores as much as possible.
Another tip that I can give you guys:
Turn off the “Stack damage dealt as a single number” (something like that) option, it helped me a lot. More than you can imagine

I didn't follow *_all_* of this steps. Yet. My game ran *_extremely_* smoother, taking in account that I play in a low-end laptop (yes I know). I went from 30 FPS on a regular server and 20 FPS on a 30 player server to having the double of each. And my graphics *_almost_* untouched! Cheers, liked and subscribed :).
guys if you want some other stuff here:

these will lower your ram and cpu usage

My fps after I watched this and did all the commands: 20

NEVER make virus exceptions for a folder like that. If a legit virus spreads on your system it is a nice safe haven for it.
If you need to adjust anti-virus checks do it per file name and make sure you know what you are doing. On systems with more than 2 cores this should have no effect anyway.
You don't need anti-virus software if you don't torrent or surf on not safe sites. I don't have any antivirus or firewall on. I scan the computer monthly. Brain is best anti virus

Arguably, that folder exception is fine but should be placed at the actual tf2 install path, under steamapps/common/team fortress 2
@@CoolJosh3k If you want to keep your system safe every second then why you don't do full scan every 1 hour? That would be nice waste of time. Unlike this where you tell people to always use antivirus and don't do folder exceptions
Spelo The more premium services can and will analyse file activity when accessed. A full scan is not often needed since it will only pick up inactive threats that are currently doing nothing. I recommend some research on how different antivirus treatment works and techniques that are used.
