  • @mrbratt69
    @mrbratt69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a bad@$$ truck, it's definitely a beast, it has to be a blast to play with. I'm a lil surprised you didn't set it up with 4 links on each axle and used the huge air springs that big rigs run. I imagine being able to control ride height would make some obstacles and such easier to deal with along with increasing your suspension travel. Don't get me wrong, you have bad @$$ suspension travel using leaf springs. I love how you set up your flat bed. Awesome job bud!

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Its a blast to wheel. It will be even funner once I get some ARB lockers in these axles. Currently, they are all open diffs. Though oddly, it hasnt stopped me form getting her into any place I want to go. I will be converting the rears to full 4-link with coilovers soon enough. I wanted to give this suspension a try and see how it went. Its great for towing and honestly kicks ass when crawling on big stuff. When one wheel lifts, it pushes down on the other wheel behind it to maintain even distribution of pressure. Seems like a great idea. But in the end, it makes for a bouncy ride on the trails and is super limiting on suspension articulation if both wheels on one side are trying to flex downward. Eh, live and learn. Had to give it a try. But now its time to move on and reconfigure to dual 4-link

    2 things id have swapped. id put either a 5.9l BT6 cummins or a Merc I6 turbo diesel in it and then snorkel for the occasional flood if any as well as river crossing but that's just me. i live in Australia so that thing wouldn't even be road legal. i know V8's are easy but nothing beats a diesel for long life and thrashing about in the mud.

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I hear ya. When I built this, people were just discovering how awesome diesels are. It seemed like a cummins went from something you couldn't give away to being impossible to find overnight. Eventually I gave up and went gasser. But still, that 496 has some serious grunt... at the cost of so-so fuel mileage. The plan was to twin turbocharge the beast and have snorkels off of the turbos. But, plans change. I actually have a prototype Raylar 8.1L intake manifold for a roots style blower. At some point, she will have a 10-71 blower sitting up top. But thats down the line after I can sling come better guts into the engine

    • @xsniperprox1
      @xsniperprox1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you guys are lucky over there. we cant hardly do anything to our rigs in Australia so we have to get smart. been trying to convince my dad to swap in a turbo BT6 into his 05 Nissan patrol and use the smaller turbo from the other engine in it atm which is a pissy small 3.0L to spool up the bigger turbo faster for more power and more low range boost. its only on small 32's and 2" lift but he also wants to install Portal Axles so he doesn't mount his diff on a rut or two since it pushes all the drive train and axles closer to the underside of the 4x4. mean less having to repair broken fuel lines and brake lines.

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive always felt bad about you guys in Australia. You have some harsh laws in regards to vehicle modification. But I Love watching some of the off-road challenge races you have over there. It looks like the Volvo portals or unimog portals are they way to go to keep it low to the ground and gain ground clearance. I suppose the only downside is not being able to run tires tall enough to compinsate for the reduced gearing.
      Honestly, the only reason im running 46" tires is due to the 6.71:1 gear ratio of the rockwells. Hell, this rig will do 128 kph on the highway all day. :) Part of me is happy that we can build and drive trucks like mine on the street. The other part of me is fearful of this, as not everybody knows how to engineer a vehicle properly. I cant tell you how many death traps ive seen driving around.

    @mrbratt69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now I look like a complete @$$ hate. You can tell you put a lot of thought and planning into building this beast. IMPRESSIVE 4 LINK set up. Awesome truck bud. I have a 79 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that has a 2" body lift, 4" suspension lift. Sitting on 35" tires. I want to convert it to a diesel along with putting a 4 LINK set up on both front and rear axles. I want to install a quick disconnect sway bar kit to the front and install a sway bar with quick disconnects so I can tow with it but also have better suspension travel. Only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. Awesome job bud!

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the old wagoneers! Im kinda surprised you don't have any videos of you wheeling it on your channel! If your linking it, you can set it up well enough to not even need swaybars. Keep the anti-squat / anti-dive ratio around 80% and your COG fairly low, you will get great flex with minimal body roll.

    • @mrbratt69
      @mrbratt69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      pegalis, I can understand a lil bit of what your saying but I'm just starting out in offroadin so I don't know a whole hell of a lot in regards to setting a truck to get the best of both worlds so to speak, do you have a Facebook account? Maybe we can talk through there?

    What was installed onto top of intake manifold? Those 2 pump looking deals

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those were the Propane mixers aka carburetors. I had to convert back to gasoline fuel when I moved up to washington, though. Nobody would fill my automotive propane tank. So it became to unreliable of a fuel source. Kinda a bummer. She polluted less than a prius when I ran LPG. Oh well. :/

  • @pegalis
    @pegalis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    New video of the 6X6 up and scooting. The first time running with the new Raylar 577ci Supercharged engine. Woot! Don't mind the trottle sticking at the end of the video. I took her up the block a bit premature. Eh, thats what I get.
    Currently bolting on new parts. Air to water intercooler for the supercharger, relocating the engine radiator to the bed of the truck and putting in a 60 gallon fuel cell. Should be back on the trails fairly soon. :)

      A bit too much grunt at times. If I romp on it, it lights up all 4 rear tires! Entertaining when I want it, but troublesome at others. I'll make a video of it at some point. :)

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was. It ran awesome with the dual mixers. And, on propane its an ultra-low-emissions vehicle. Hehehe, polluted than that a prius :) Not bad for a beastly 496! Regretfully, I had to change it back to gasoline once I moved up to washington. Nobody would fill the LPG tank. Its a road tax thing. Once it became to unreliable of a fuel source, I didnt have a choice. I miss having 110 octane LPG. Now I have to run premium. yeesh.

    How about that SVX in the back ground.

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooohh. Yeah. Im a sucker for SVX's. That one I was converting to a track car. 11.5:1 compression eg33, 5-mt swap etc. Tarmac inverted coilovers. STI uprights and brakes. I gutted the interior, seam welded, and started plans for a full cage... which is difficult in an SVX. Then I took her out for tests and she understeered like mad. The eg33 is a heavy lump of an engine to be sitting in front of the front axles. Had plans to swap to a 2.5 to shave some weight. Buuut, then I had to move out of state and parted her out as I had nowhere to keep her at the time. :/

    Just wondering why you didn't box in the frame first?

    • @pegalis
      @pegalis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh, couple reasons. First, Hindsight is a bitch. I may still box it, but its not a problem with the added support. It started out as a 2wd camper special which has a slightly different frame thats actually thicker than a standard 1-ton k frame. So I thought it would be fine. Second, when the project started I didnt have a plasma torch. So making templates and cutting out all the fill plates with a side grinder or sawzall was not high on my list of to-do's
