ScurvyJosh I agree with that. I liked this game when I was younger, it had a great soundtrack, really full of stuff to do. But even then it felt a little cartoony. Looking back it hasn't aged very well, it's definitely a product of the time. The Jackass/Viva la Bam thing was in full swing. The crudeness is funny for a minute then it just gets obnoxious imo.
I still remembered when THUG2 first came out i was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school i played it for hour an hours for the ps2 it was so much fun i had alot of good memories with that game back in 2004 !
Liam L the GameCube is better because of the little black and white buttons on Xbox suck compared to just pushing the Z button to hop off your board, the layout of the controller on GameCube is better for easier combos.
@@GSTACK57 Nice! I assume its the same for Thug 1 too since that's actually the game I was asking the question about and forgot to mention it. I think I'll pick up the game for GameCube if you think that's the case. I used to love it and play it on the Xbox Original but my little kid self didn't look after the disc and it got so scratched it stopped working so I've just had Thug 2 to play for years now. Its been a whole decade since I last played THUG 1 and I've had a huge craving to play it again this past year.
Liam L I promise the GameCube version is stellar for both. I know exactly what you mean, I’ve had to re acquire a lot of my childhood games and whatnot.
Definitely the best TH game. -Best level design -Best story structure (even if the actual story is silly) -Best character customization -Mechanical sweet-spot -Great soundtrack -And all of the little things like classic mode and THPS levels I get why people didn't like that the games started to pull away from skating, but judged as a video game THUG 2 was great. And thanks Rad Rat for turning me on to THUG Pro a while back. It's a blast!
I think just the fact that Thug Pro exist makes it the best game in the series. Wished American Wasteland was also modded. There were some cool ideas in that game, and to be honest I kinda prefer the cartoony aesthetic.
I used to play this game every day after school when I was younger.. I LOVED all the maps. Barcelona is the best map ever.. oh.. and the OST is to die for.
the story is incredibly short especially if you literally just do the required tasks to pass each stage and watching people do any% speedruns in under 10 minutes makes it even more glaringly obvious
I remember being blown away when I first discovered the day and night cycle. I had never seen it in a game before. I just found my PSP with THUG2 remix and I'm going to give it another try. It's a really solid port, though the game runs slower than the original. Great review as always! Will you review the last gen ports when you get to THP8 etc?
Great video but you got somethings wrong I just wanna point out. 6:08 You play as a witch doctor in New Orleans, not the Grim Reaper 8:49 You get to play as Bam in the Berlin level when your character is on his team
THUG2 is nostalgia for me because I first played it when I was 8 years old when it came out and I really enjoyed it. Only until I got into the full Tony Hawk series as a teenager do I understand the criticism but even then it along with American Wasteland were both great to me because I was growing up with them. Now I'm 24 but I still frequently play THUG2 because of how well it held up for me. The one thing that changed since then is challenging my friends to a drunk (or high) high score challenge which further increased it's replay value.
This game is my second favorite game of all time, right behind Super Mario Sunshine. I felt like some of the levels were the best in the series because of how fun they were to skate in. I felt like they shouldn't of included all the jackass stuff (except weeman he was cool but i do enjoy the story anyways.
So much nostalgia. I remember writing in my school planner the release date for this game. I’ve played it so much over the years. Really wish they would’ve done a Underground 3. But after THPS5, I’m not sure that’d be good.
this was my most memorable experience out of all the skateboarding games i played. had some really fun and unique levels that still hold up in my mind even today. if i was going to go back and play 1, its this...
Definitely the best review of this game I've seen. Very, very well done. A lot of people will say a game's good or bad but not explain the fine points of why and how. You spell it out clearly what is good, what is bad, and why you think that.
One thing i like about the freak out meter is it adds a TINY bit more strategy. You have to decide "Is it better to freak out and get a 2000ish point start i can turn into another combo? Or should I mash the button to get up faster so i use less time on the clock, but at the cost of an empty special meter and having to start a combo at 0 and work my way up?". Its really cool design that i dont see many talk about :3
oh man thug 2 is literally my favorite tony hawk game of the series, i love that game and dont get sick of it, i admit i wish the story was alittle longer but still great game, also i really like thps 1-4, thug 1, thaw, and project 8
THAW is probably one of my least favourite games in the series. The missions are all incredibly easy, and most of them are just tutorials. You collect pieces for a skatepark in the story, but the park doesn't even skate well in the end, it just feels like a lot of objects got thrown around without caring about lines and combos. Also, the fact that you have to unlock tricks just feel ridiculous and makes the game more boring in the beginning. You don't even get access to special tricks until you're halfway through the story.
BboyRadioactiv3 I love THPS3 and THPS2, but I really do agree with you. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is my favorite Tony Hawk game, and Proving Ground (PS3) is really up there.
id say thps 2 is the best from the pro skater series, and thug 2 is the best post pro skater game. i'd say proving ground and project 8 are both garbage in my opinion
Richard Arnold man PG's video editor was so crazy for it's time. It actually inspired me to start filming and editing in real life. Plus nail the trick, grab and manual offered some fun new ways of doing combos. Storywise some of the branches have definitely been off 😅
Another yet amazing video! I love your videos they are so entertaing and I just can't watch one video without going through all of them! keep up the good work!
What I really hate about THUG2 in a non-gameplay related tangent is how small the characters are .Everyone looks like a midget child and looks even more awkward when you try to make them larger with the character editor. I had forgotten about it until I got back to playing THUG Pro maybe 2~ years ago with some friends.
THUG2 Remix was great for me as I had a psp as well as a ps2 and being able to play it on the go was amazing. I remember unlocking the Bermuda level and was amazed as my friend, who normally beat all the games before me and told me the secrets, hadn't found it.
As cheesy and stupid as THUG 2 is, that's kinda why I like it. It's a time capsule for the 2000s, when Jackass was everywhere and skate culture was at its pique. @@jetthejudge It had some interesting ideas but the frame rate and bail stuff really hurt the ps3/360 versions while the ps2 version just felt like a less polished, mediocre uninspired version of previous THPS games.

Your character is NOT the same from 1. Why does everybody always say this? Eric makes zero fuckin reference to all the crazy shit that happened and your guy doesn't just punch his face right away. It's a new guy who moved in the neighborhood.
I recently played through the GameCube version of this on my modded Wii and found no slowdown during lighting the fireworks, them setting off, the movies for them or anything. I dunno if it's the GameCube version itself or just the fact I'm playing it off a harddrive into a modded Wii. But if someone actually cares about it that's an option to play it on a console without lag/slowdown😂😂
I remember playing the last mission of this game over and over again till I beat it. My mom thought it was the neighbors dogs barking and actually called them to tell them to shut up😭🤣
Sorry but your mom sounds stupid af like mine then, like if my neighbor calls asking that om blasting the loadest dog barking video on repeat on speaker all day
I always liked THUG 1 a bit more, I thought the story and general atmosphere were more grounded and less... stupid, I guess? Plus the music in THUG 1 is amazing, it has so many songs that I would describe as my favorites today. California Babylon and Armageddon were standouts for me.
I was 13 years old when this game came out. I was obsessed with the show Jackass and wild boys. This game knocked it out of park as far as aiming for the demographic goes..
Why did people not like this one? It's my favorite in the series. Also, Freak Out is actually pretty useful, because it's a lot of points, and you can manual and combo out of it, so if you're going for points and mess up, you can immediately start a new combo and get a lot of points.
I wonder why did Hawk and Bam ditched Beaverhausen. They might get even more famous if they actually gave the tape - Or was it because if they did it, they will became wanted due to them destroying the cities? Or was it because the tour is an underground thing so they don't want anyone besides those who participate to know about it?
Nostalgia might be talking here (I played this game over and over when I was like 8 lol), but I think this is the best TH game by far. I even played in on GameCube and I thought it was good

the best tony hawk game was pro skater 3. Me and my friends would play that on dreamcast after school EVERY DAY, then we started skated and would skatepark after school and THPS3 after dark when the skate park closed.

Hot Take: THUG2 is actually a top tier THPS game, yea sure it’s goofy, but all of the skating in Tony Hawk games are we don’t play it for realism we play it to make outlandish combos. Plus the maps in this game is great. The remake of the original warehouse is great!
I've held the opinion for a while now that THUG2 is a better Jackass game than the actual Jackass Game

There is actually no slowdown on the other versions for the endgame, i think this was an xbox-only problem.
The reason why skatopia is in thug 2 is because of viva la bam
The sticker slap was better than the wall plant too that made doing lines easier.
Thug 2, thaw and thps 3 are my favorite of the series, I love the whole tony hawk series especially thug 2

Hot Take: THUG2 is actually a top tier THPS game, yea sure it’s goofy, but all of the skating in Tony Hawk games are we don’t play it for realism we play it to make outlandish combos.
Plus the maps in this game is great. The remake of the original warehouse is great!
It's not a hot take at all, a hot take would be saying it's extremely overrated and not a top tier Tony Hawk game, which it is.
