*'I like music when I don't understand it'* ~ That's exactly why I love both their music. I don't really understand it in any structural sense, but the puzzle fascinates me. And every time I hear it I discover something different I didn't notice before.
I don’t understand Phillip Glass’ music, either, and yet I’m intrigued every time I hear it. Aphex Twin is easy to like. Put them together and you’ve got something INTERESTING 🧐
Saw Glass in Bristol many years ago.. absolutely amazing… the audience was made up of the classical folk in dinner attire.. and weirdo electronica people, Philip played beautifully and both sets of the audience loved it. So glad I got to be there.
I had a chance several years back to hear Mr. Glass live with full orchestra playing his Heroes composition (among many others). Richard James' remix of Glass' version, basically combining elements of himself, Glass, and Bowie remains one of my favorite go to tracks. Of course my best friend decided to get married and make me his best man on the exact day of the concert. I'm still bitter about it. 😅
"When I don't understand something I get curious about it". If only more people approached the unknown like that, Bob Dylan would've never wrote "Don't criticize what you can't understand".
There were some sounds that I had to warm up to with Richard's music. It didn't make sense. I couldn't congeal the sound.. But then I started hearing it and I could see. It became less like noise and became organic. There still are certain sounds/noises that I don't like, i.e. highpitched tones sustaining through a track, but those are designed to irritate to a degree. I've been listening to Aphex since '96.
He sequences pretty much everything. If you watch his shows he rarely actually actively is playing the keyboard. He’s a drum machine guy through and through, and that’s why he’s so good.
Why? People why? I do not know how I would love to hear his story. For many years, many stories and dreams have been created if this were to be confronted with facts
If you go deep in understanding his person you'll find obvious that he would never do it (not because "red bull is poison") Of course would be super cool hearing his stories...
I can’t be the only one who never wants to see something like an RBMA or Fact: Against the Clock with Aphex as the focus. Please nobody spoil that mysterious layer for me, it adds to the experience of enjoyment! I like little hints, like the video he put out of Vordhosbn being played on a tracker, or the Tuss rotary speaker video. But no need for complete exposition.
I actually feel quite the opposite way. I'd love to take a closer look at the original tracker files of tracks like Ziggomatic 17 or whatever...Just to learn from them. I used to have dreams of Squarepusher showing me his way around the Yamaha QY 700 (nerdy as hell). But it might not be that interesting to people who don't make music themselves.
@@GunshipDiplomat Totally. Squarepusher uses a mode on the QY that's quite tracker-ish (but he's only mentioned trackers once, afaik). I'm pretty sure that Richard started using trackers in the mid-nineties already as he went on to influence the demo-scene quite a bit (people such as Bogdan Raczynski) up until the early 2000s. Venetian Snares has been using trackers forever, but I think he's more hardware-oriented these days (lots of Elektron machines). Autechre also used Renoise for a while and actually worked with Snares a little bit. I wish both would release some of those files, the results must have been mental!
Like how he "tryed" to explain his "musical" training. With richard...you never ask questions. He knows his path and where it will go. Essentially Phil was an "experiment" to him. And it worked beautifully
Iccthedral - but his version is not on the LP, it's on the Donkey Rhubarb EP. RDJ also leaked a previous version of it in his "Soundcloud dump" days. He notoriously said he really didn't like Glass's first version and made him redo it.
really interesting how he would add tracks to Richard's music, then remove Richard's tracks.. I never thought of collaborating with another person that way. Kind of "infusing" their style into your own sound.
Well clearly his memory is in a grey area. Listen to way he tried to recall certain aspects of the story. He will give a wide window of specifics. Also why is this video so short?
I disagree. When he says "I like his music" I feel like he's being sincere. Sure he doesn't sound blown away by RDJ, but I think he felt a kinship in sound.

you know your are some serious shit when Philip Glass spends 3 mins talking about how unique you are.
"I like music when I don't understand it". Richard said the same thing in an interview at some point.
can you give me the link of the interview?
I want too
I think MTV interview
He has such a cute humble tone to his voice a really thankful person!
That’s why I like math rock. I couldn’t tell you what time signature the music is in but I can tell if I like it.
Rumour has it he is still twice his age
wait
i didn't realize the glass family ages exponentially
That's not how time works.
@@meu02136 yes, that is indeed the joke
Philip "I was easily twice his age" Glass
The way he describes Aphex Twins music is exactly how I feel about it as well.
I saw Phillip Glass perform at my college and it was a mesmerizing experience. Got to meet him later and he was very very kind.

That Icct Hedral orchestration was great
It was an interesting experiment
I need to hear those sound experiments
try Unstable Escapes by Dum Trik
you tricked me, but it wasn't bad you did.. nice stuff cheers

I think a fair chunk of Richard's stuff (like Analords for instance) makes for a bit more of a challenging listen tbh
aphex isn't easy to like at all if you don't like harsh timbres. his 80s/90s stuff is easy. after that not so much.
I wouldn’t say Aphex Twin is easy to like.
It’s really nice to hear a Legend comment on his work with another Legend

The Logo on the wall is killing me 😳
It'd be nice if the world had things with intense purpose around only

another great clip, thanks RB Music Adacdemy for these interviews. good questions, very open format, great guest and interviewer
I feel glass when he said he was attracted to music he didnt understand but liked very much.
Lovely man and great musician.
experimenting with random equipment seems so fun. this collab is interesting
Master on master. Love it

Nice clip but I can't forgive this man for haunting my dreams with his music from Candyman.
Was RDJ being modest? It seems pretty clear that he knows his way around a keyboard. Either that or he took lessons in the late 90s.
Electric engineer, audio engineer. He's a genius knob twittler
The answer is synclavier
I always thought RDJ sequenced rather than performed on instruments.
@@forestsunset9617 sequenced? well that's much easier if true.

Wtf??? They did collaboration?!??!?! Nice
Imagine seeing Icct performed live by Glass though 🤯
Just so you guys know he's like 80 in this...... wow

When Aphex Twin visit Red Bull Music Academy ????
Witold Zielonka Never I hope .... He is one of the only decent guys in electronic music.
Don't sell out Rich - red bull is poison !
Witold Zielonka he got enough money so he dont have to do this, plus his image is based on being quiet and letting music speaks

do you need to understand aphex twin intellectually or can it just be for the enjoyment of sound?
I don’t think Richard (Aphex twin) would claim there is an intellectual part to his music.
He’s the closest thing to John Cage in our time.
Does anybody know what track Philip did on "I care because you do" LP? I forgot the sleeve notes!
I will be king
