I purchased the smoothing tools as demonstrated, followed the video guide - perfect! The easiest and best results I've ever had when trying to silicone at home, thank you!
Have tried many different methods over the years and this is the one that has given me the best results. Most important thing of all is to have plenty if tissue to-hand, as a non-pro you will either put too much or too little on. The spray helps to keep the silicone workable for a bit longer as well, which you’ll need as an amateur. If your walls are out-of-true, don’t use the tile-shaped tools as they won’t run-up the ealls correctly; bitter experience has taught me this! In those circumstances, your finger would be better, or the type of tool this chap is using. Good luck!
Thank you so much, I am a female trying to do new things on my own. This was the best how to video I have ever seen. Thanks for the best lesson from Chicago Illinois. xx
Thank you! My daughter applied silicone awhile back and it is awful! There’s dry residue and mold everywhere in it, too! The sink leaks around the edges. I have to remove it all and redo three sinks, two bathtubs and around the bottoms of two toilets. Your method will be very helpful. My daughter used a compressor but she didn’t cut the silicone tube tip larger or at an angle. She didn’t use the tool the way you did, on one plane, then the other. She didn’t use the water spray. I can’t fault my daughter because she tried to help but failed with no experience or instruction. I’m sure l or we will do better on this very soon. It will be a relief to get the project off the to-do list and off my mind! 🚽🚰🛁
At least he watched it. I cannnot have any almost 30 year old son do that let alone do an easy job. His dad used to do odd jobs even though he wasn't a tradesman. Like a lot of men he just figured things out.
I needed to replace the silicone in my walk in/wet room shower , previously I used the masking tape technique with variable and messy results. This time I followed your method and have had really good results . I have difficulty with the internal 90degree corners, they end up untidy, so next time maybe you could include how to do them your video Keep up the good work.
I have founf your tutorial most professional and helpful. Don't take to heart small criticism; applying sealants is an art, and there will always be unimportant criticism. Thanks, lol yeah it’s funny how you end up watching this after getting your silicons work all messy.... but looking forward to using these techniques next time. Nice work, you’ve made it look easy!
This is one job I used to absolutely detest as I could never get it to look any good and ended up with silicone everywhere. The method I used previous to this was making tape but that just made it take long and, in most cases, I'd either leave the making take on too long which resulted in a lot of the silicone pulling off or there would be a kind of lip /ridge where the silicone had met the tape. I bought the same tool as you use in the video and this worked fantastically - I've just sealed the whole of a new shower enclosure and I'm very happy with the job. One thing I would be interested to know is if you have any tips for doing corners as this was the only fiddly bit I encountered this time. Great video.
Yes, I am from Germany and prefer watching this over German tutorials - just because of his accent! Of course, this material is very well explained. Very helpful!
Washing Up Liquid = Dish Soap for us Yanks. Thanks for a great video. I've purchased all the tools and am ready to do a great job. One of the best videos out there on the topic.
Thank you 😊 I was advised to use a hairdryer to remove the old. Also a hairdryer to remove the two sided sticky tape for the cellophane draught excluder which goes over windows. The sticky tape is difficult to remove from the UPVC window surround and I cannot afford to renew now, so I have to use that stuff in winter.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video (and the on-the-job one) and for the tool recommendation. I needed to do apply a bunch of sealant around the house today, and usually it'd end up look vaguely okay-ish. But with your suggestion I was off to screwfix to get the tool, used as you demonstrated, and the work was much neater than I would normally have produced - even the wife thought it was a pretty good job! ;-)
Excellent couple of videos. I bought and used the Cramer profiling kit (No 7) and found it produced very good joints. I didn't use the washing up / water solution spray to finish but will in future. However, one question - how do you achieve a silicone joint with whole (uncut) Metro tiles sitting on top of a worktop, i.e. the bevel edge sits with a 3mm gap on the worktop? In this case it's not a 90 degree angle.
If you use that spray when sealing a upvc window, you'll get that spray on all the other surfaces where you still need to silicone over. You'll be screwed surely?
Great job Mate. Never mind, you’re always gonna get negative comments, I’ll opt for the spray bottle. ThankYou for the video. Question; do you have a video on cleaning the nozzle and saving the silicone for next use please?
you don't have to take care about nozzle. Up to three days you simply pull out created plug from nozzle and if it is more than three days simply use new nozzle. This is my professional experience
@@gabriels32 You Brits are blessed to have caulk tubes with removable nozzles. Here in the USA, they're all made firmly attached in place, and you have to puncture the inner seal with a wire run in through the hole that you cut at the end of the nozzle. The product remaining in the nozzle sets, and you can't press any more out, so you have to throw the tube away, even if it has lots left in it.
Thanks for watching. Either take the taps off or what I have done is cut one of the silicone tools that I had spare so as it's thin enough to fit behind the taps.
Thanks for a great video Already better than how I have ever done it. What edge are you using when tidying it up? Flat or the tapered? Also how do I clear up the excess water which is on the good seal? Many thanks
I know there are negative comments - but good video ... esp tips on using tools forwards & reversed. On tiles (grout breaks or textured surface - I would use masking tape - but nothing against using these tools with tape. Well done mate.
It works on our video when having perfectly smooth and straight surface. In real work, there are grout gaps in between tiles, corners and uneven surfaces.
Watched both videos and then had a go at doing the bath.got the silicone on reasonably ok and used the same green tool you used .when I tried to clean the excess from the tool it just stuck to the tool.sprayed it with the water and washing up mix which made the paper break up and just coated the tool in a thin sticky layer of silicone .tried to carry on but the silicone on the bath had started to drag and the spray did not help in any way and I finished up with the silicone looking terrible with me covered in the stuff.wife says it’s all got to come out and be redone
Thanks for the video. Wish Screwfix was here in the U.S. The major hardware stores here have similar products but I haven't found the exact set you have. Thanks for posting.
I have been using CT1 I'm a novice at this but I sealed my exterior of my caravan and it works very well no more leaks. Any views on CT1? Great vid mate
Perfect - clean - quick - but for my situation, I'm using tiles 10cm tiles which will prevent a smooth drag across the surface due to the grout lines. Will this method still work? Or should I just go for it and let you know how it went? Thanks
Great video well explained, when sealing around sanitary wear in tiled bathrooms, how do you stop the silicone tool from going into the joints in the tile and then leaving a indent in the silicone bead🤔 thanks
Good question and that's where you need a slightly more expensive professional kit which has and attachment that stops the spatula falling into the indentation. Google 'Cramer Fugi Kit' and you'll find the tool. Good luck Peter
Nice video. I find cleaning the area with a degreasant eg white spirit ensures the silicon never lifts. How about some advice on sealing up a half used tube and reusing one with a gunked up nozzle?

hi thanks for the great tutorial! what are the advantages of cutting the tube at 45 degrees and why are some people so anti water bottle and finger ? thanks again
bottle with soapy water is necessary because silicone is so sticky and soap in the water cause that silicone won't stick to your finger and finger you use for final touch up. And I give you one advice. For tooling the silicone use paddle pop stick
@@gabriels32 thanks for the tip but I've already done it and hopefully won't be a next time xD this video helped a lot, I didn't use water and got a great finish. my tip is not to use fingers just the plastic tools/things. Awesome! Great job! For us non UK residents when you say washing up liquid what exactly do you mean? Dish soap, shower soap or just any kind of liquid soap? Also, does the soap and water effect the dry time any? How much soap to how much water? Thank you very much!
I’ll try the silicone tool. On your first pass pushing the silicone in the corner for me that extra would never come up, just smear everywhere since there’s no soapy water/denatured alcohol….im guessing the silicone rubber tool is able to scrape it clean? If it does that clean then the soapy water doesn’t seem necessary.

What is it in the bottle ? All you said was it is what is needed but never said what is it . This is the difference between good explanation and great explanation
Hyde caulk pack is the best $5 tool Ive ever used better than the other expensive crap. Caulked over a 1000 bathrooms with it on commercial. Always use dish soap with water or windex to get that perfect bead. The method of spray after the fist pass will not work on tile to tub, you need to spray before your first pass or you will never be able to get that residue fully off.
I would like to see how to silicon the joint between small kitchen tiles where the edges are slightly curved and the worktop. I have the tools as shown in your video but can imagine that the tool will follow in and out of the joint profiles.
The tile should have a bigger gap between it and the bath ( i know it is only a demonstration but this is vitally important), to anchor the silicon into the tiles. All good tilers know this is a basic mistake ie do NOT SIT the tile directly on the bath - use a spacer under the tile - OTHERWISE you will not be anchoring your silicon into the tile joint but be laying silicon over the joint. The other purpose of not grouting the internal corners is to PREVENT LATERAL COMPRESSION across the plane of the tiling. With building movement over time this will make your tiles pop because they cannot compress acroos the wall or floor. This is why a peripheral gap is required around all areas tiled for periodic movement which your silicon will absorb. The other example of this can be seen in shopping centres where the floor tiling has expansion gaps every 5 metres - to prevent compression across the plane of the floor tiling. So view your silicon joint as an expansion joint as well as a watertight seal. With a tub of tanking solution only costing around £60 this will protect the water tightness underneath your tiling against excessive settlement of new build being absorbed by the elastic waterproof corner tapes. So that is why Studhawk reccomend a tanking coat prior to starting tiling and a FULLY ANCHORED silicon joint to FULL TILE DEPTH. Not following this way of thinking will lead to the tiling failing or the silicon joint failing after 6 -12 months whereas when silicon is done well and properly anchored into the tiles it will last for 10 years! If you can cut the silicon out easily with a razor blade - THEN IT WAS NOT ANCHORED INTO THE TILING and you will need a gap to hold the silicon in place, So if your tiles are tiled tight butting up next to each other - YOU WON'T HAVE A GAP TO SILICON INTO. Filling the gaps is why the silicon does not go in in a neat run so don't try to ensure it is neat - BUT THAT YOU HAVE FILLED THE VOIDS. Most silicon in the world is only laid over the joint rather than fully into the joint. Studhawk - Formerly Capital Fixers - Tiling Contractors for 25 years. What is it in the bottle ? All you said was it is what is needed but never said what is it . This is the difference between good explanation and great explanation
Great video. Thanks for the information
Will do sir, thank you very much!
Great video, my shower is looking nice again!
That's good, that's what the video is there for. Thanks for watching.
Thanks a lot for sharing the video.
In process of renovating bathroom and always struggle with this part . I'm off to screwfix now as have always used my finger b4.
Very well explained
Thanks Bill
Nice video and explanation thank you.
Great video...I will try this method.
How do you make it clean like this when the tool does not fit? For example- narrow tub to tile seam where the tub has a lip in the corners.
Very good & professional video . . . Thank you
Thank you Roberto.
Very good job my friend, I live in México where can I get that tools or molding for caulking.. Thanks friend.
Judging by the discarded amount, the initial application was excessive. A smaller hole will surely do.
Great video, thanks.
Does this tool work on acrylic sealants?
What if the bead turns bad looking and you already have it covered with soapy water? How do you add silicone to the existing bead then?
You'd have to cut it out first than clean the surface
sir tel me that spray bottle what kind of liquid ?
I wish you show me how to do it if you have coarse surfers tiles
this tutorial is even better thanks
Great video and a big help!
I would like to see how to silicon the joint between small kitchen tiles where the edges are slightly curved and the worktop. I have the tools as shown in your video but can imagine that the tool will follow in and out of the joint profiles.
Excellent video. Thank you!
You're welcome

Hopefully you will realise with a sense of logic that what i have written is not lies but common sense??
Dahhhh! When does chapter two come out? It's a video on how to do it with the least amount of mess not to stop Big Ben from rusting!
All very well on a nice straight board. It is a bit harder when you have to go into corners and around taps or pipes.
What about areas where that tool doesn't fit I grouted a corner cloakroom basin from the side where the plumber had missed and made an absolute mess I did
Great video. Could you please help me with British to American translation? What is "washing up liquid"? Is that for dishes? Skin? Laundry? Thanks.
What you use to wash your dishes, Dawn Dish Liquid or whichever brand you prefer to use
Could you do a video using silicone on a tiled wall that has groutes joints?
I'd use the same method sir but just ensure that you use a larger sized tool if the grout is proud.
What do you man by "the grout is proud"?
@@crazyb3265 "proud" meant deeper grooves.
Superb. Wish I had known this years ago.
Me too Brian
