➡️ Is this punk? Is it melodic hardcore? I don’t know, but these lads SHRED! The requests for “The Horse” by A Wilhelm Scream have been piling up, and I’m following your lead into deeper waters as I’ve never heard of these guys before. The two-handed bass tapping came out of left field and it’s some of the most impressive bass playing I’ve heard. I expected the song to be high-octane from start to finish, but the later interlude section really surprised me with a ton of melodic bass work under a catchy guitar motif. I discuss the song’s composition, Brian Robinson’s bass tone, and then hang on for dear life trying to catch all the beautiful bass intricacies. This track was quite the journey! 🤯🔥

So cool to see this! I saw people mentioning Wilhelm in the comments on some of your videos. I filled in on bass, and then guitar, for Wilhelm in 2006-2007 (before the parts got really hard). Getting to play alongside Brian was a real treat, though! Long live AWS ⚡️
Wow!! That sounds so fun. Thanks for coming by, my friend. I can’t wait to hear more AWS.
@@LowEndUniversitycheck out @onedereffects band The Swellers. More deep dives into this awesome community of punk bands.
Swellers reunion, let’s do it!
This is why I love punk rock.
The swellers - skoots reaction next!!!!
Brian is my younger brother - thanks for making this! I know it means a lot to him!!
Awesome!! Thanks so much for this! He did message me the other day after I posted this, extremely nice of him. I can't wait to hear more of his work.
Your brother is a musical fucking genius. This album is, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums ever made.
I can't be more appreciative of it or them 🙏🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌
A Wilhelm Scream is so underrated.
I have only been lucky enough to see them one time. I think it was Fest '08 in Gainesville.
This album has so many bangers.
Sadly a Bands Band
Until their most recent release "lose your delusion." That album is hot garbage. But that don't erase all the masterpieces they've already made.
This song is such trash
I still listen to them!
About ten years ago, my band opened for A Wilhelm Scream. Brian used my bass rig that night and it blew my mind the kind of tone he was able to get out of my amp. Didn't know it was possible. Dude is suuuper talented and was a treat to be able to watch them play.
Letting a musician you admire use your gear is such a fun unique experience.
Propagandhi anything from the album todays empire til victory lap is amazing…Todd is criminally underrated.
So true todd is amazing
We still need to pin down to a music to recommend, no? Or he will have to do the whole discog starting from Today's Empires! (Not against that)
Fedallah's Hearse is what I'd pick.
The Rod is amazing!!!!
just said the same thing, ha!
Literally, anything Brian does is insane.. we're gonna turn you into a full punkrock channel before you know it!😉
😅😅
That wouldn't be the worst thing to happen haha.
Even more insane that Brian does backing vocals at the same time. This is one of the better live recordings: th-cam.com/video/J9QYH86MZzQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yxj3SzDVsoqX0i7I
He usually plays a Stingray. That's what gives that recognizable trebly sound.
I just want to recommend Hot Water Music - Drag my body. The bass tone is so good, holds down the groove amazing and some really great fills. Worth a listen for sure.
They’re on my list. Stay tuned!
LET'S GO!!!@@LowEndUniversity
Shit yeah! That bass line is sex
Free radio Gainesville by Hot Water music is also worth checking out for bass awesomeness
@@rockvids42 So many classic bass lines - Jet Set Ready, Free Radio, Trademark, etc.
These guys are a great choice. They’re like the technical death metal analog in punk. Their songwriting is crazy.
Death metal? 🤔
I FUCKING LOVE LOW END UNIVERSITY NEW OBSESSION WITH PUNK
Literally one of my favorite songs. I would highly recommend the whole album. It's a masterpiece and the hardcore/punk vocals are great with the ridiculous instrumental work.
How have i never heard Wilhem Scream before now. Wild.
Brian is a killer on bass, love this dude.
Super nice dude. He loves his bourbon barrel stouts.
A Wilhelm Scream is so incredibly cool, this vid made my night dude, so fun seeing how psyched you got at the first listen.
Loved them!! Appreciate you hanging out friend! 🙏🏼
We built this city on debt and booze from that album is my favourite song and it absolutely rips, the bassist does indeed play with his fingers
Nice! I try not to assume anymore with pick or fingerstyle - both can sound like each other depending on the player.
I recently saw Cigar open for Lagwagon, I think they are one of the absolute fastest punk bands I've ever heard, and that dude never used a pick. I've seen alot of punk guys use fingers on occasion, but to do it at that speed for a full 45 minuet set is a skill in itself.
Built this city has great bass parts! Definitely check that one out!
WAKE UP!!!!
These guys are from my neck of the woods. I got to see them go from playing skatepark shows to dropping masterpieces like this album. It’s awesome to see someone reacting to them this way.
Bent but not broken- face to face.
That’s a good one and there’s and official video with Scott the bass player playing along.
I'm glad I'm not the first one mentioning RKL. They pushed the Punk-HC boundaries in the '80 towards technical parts and Rock'n'Roll nightmare is their masterpiece. Blocked Out is a bass-oriented song out of this record with a mind blowing intro.
Dude, NOFX and A Wilhelm Scream are two of my favorite bands and watching you discover them has been so much fun. Great videos, thank you.
Stare at the Sun by Thrice has an awesome bass line...
I got goosebumps just reading this comment. One of my favorite bass lines of all time.
On the technical end of things, "Elephant March" from the new Belvedere album is pretty standout. And "Bates Motel" by Mute is an absolute masterpiece. Propagandhi and Strung Out somehow get all the attention, but Canadian bands have basically been doing the Prog-punk thing since SNFU.
+1 for bates motel
Even earlier --- since NoMeansNo!
Man, Belvedere rules. Also, SNFU is an all-time band for me. Unreal.
Just banger after banger recently! You're crushing it!
Glad you’re enjoying them Derek! Cheers! 🙏🏼
Amazing breakdown. Love seeing Wilhelm here. Brian is one of the best in the biz. Propagandhi should definitely be on your short list of other bands to check out! Todd Kowalski has some of the most complex, beautiful and brutal bass lines in all of punk/hardcore.
Hear hear. We need Propagandhi.
+1 for Todd!
Came here to recommend Propagandhi too. Anything from Failed States or Victory lap.
@@tyrannoeil1609but but...Supporting Caste is their best album 😮
Most underrated band in the world.
Honestly, my favourite bit about these videos is the unbridled joy on your face as you discover these songs ❤ its magical!
trevor and nuno are harmonizing masters
It's so nice to see your happy smile when you're listening to these tracks. I know this kind of music is not exactly down your aisle, but it's so heart-warming and wholesome to see you appreciate your fellow bass geniuses without even saying a single word. Love it!
Yes! Do “Skid Rock” for more Wilhelm.
Propagandhi, anything from today’s empires on. Todd is amazing.
Anything by Boss’ Daughter.
Your ear is so amazing.
This band does not get enough credit. Every member fking rips!! More AWS reactions please
Seen those guys dozens of times over here in germany. Not a single mediocre performance, they're always 100% there. And the bassist does nail his parts live, every single damn time.
I’ve been seeing Bri play since like 2006 in a band The Fullblast. Different vibes, amazing bass and drum led music. Always super active on stage and nailing every note, emphasizing all the right bits.
They play Germany more than Chicago 😂. Just saw them and it had been 7 or 8 years 😂
@@mikekristin7201 Yeah, it's never a too long wait for us. Still trying to catch them at least 2 or 3 times on each tour. One of the last bands to make me stagedive at 41😁
His E string is dropped to D. If you have time, have a look at Streetlight Manifesto - Watch it Crash. The basslines are sick (ska-punk).
Yaaaah! Such a good band!
Fun fact : Brian from AWS has subbed a few times for Streetlight's bass player.
@@lepetitnabotReally??? I didn't know it. Wow. I'm speechless.
@@lepetitnabot 😵 That’s amazing and I did not know!!! Do you know if Bri was in the ska band with Andy (drummer of The Fullblast) under the name Kept with Honour? Highschool days I’m guessing!
Streetlight! One of the most technically beautiful bands of all time
its so refreshing to have someone who is so knowledgeable and truly loves music break these done for us. You have down the community a service. Thank you sir.
as a metal fan I thought this was great, appreciate the exposure to the punk lately
About the "melodic hardcore" tag, that's basically the next step from what NOFX was doing in the 90s. Most people would call both NOFX-esque bands and A Wilhelm Scream-esque bands just "skate punk". Punk folks are not that organized with their subgenre tags as metal folks do, but that's kinda part of the fun.
This band always struck me as metal guys playing punk. There are several live videos of this song where you can see the bass player doing the tapping part, he uses a 4-string and shifts his left hand position back and forth.
I've found out about these guys fairly recently, and they've quickly became one of my all time favorite bands. Punk can be more than just simple power chords, and bands like AWS are definitive proof of that.
Streetlight Manifesto - We Will Fall Together… unbelievable bass playing! The guy’s a juggernaut!
I really love this section. There is a lot of bass player in the punk and the hardcore that deserves a video. Hope to see you reacting to something from Descendents someday
Karl’s my favourite ever, soooo good
I grew up near Boston, and saw these guys with Much The Same when they were still called Smackin Isaiah. The ripped then and they rip now and they will rip in the future.
Thank you for featuring this song!! AWS sounds outside of punk music, but they play punk shows, tour with punk bands, and they just blow the doors of live shows. Brain the bass player also sings vocal harmonies, which is amazing since the bass lines are a full time job on their own.
The fact he's singing over this specific tapping part is insane.
These guys are from my hometown. New Bedford, MA represent!
Brian is unreal. He plays this shit, while flying all over the place and singing backup. It's a treat to watch live. He used to play in a Canadian punk rock band in the early 2000's called The Fullblast too, who ripped.
Never heard of them before; but this song is totally killer!!!
If you like this listen to the song called Skid Rock. Even better than this in my opinion.
I asked for this song this week. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
Damn!! You took our suggestion!!!
😘
First I heard of this band. I specifically have been avoiding punk rock since picking bass up again to avoid my straight 8ths root note habits. But this is so much more complex then the punk bass I used to play.
Love Wilhem Scream - we had the opportunity to support them a couple of years ago on their German dates. Super nice guys, super talented. And yeah, you gotta check out PROPAGANDHI as well.
Wish I were there! You guys are a great band too!
And Yeah! Please, do Propagandhi!
Oh siiick!!! This is so cool. "The King is Dead" would be so sweet to check out.
This was awesome! I wasn’t expecting the beautiful breakdown, nor that tapping bass, I loved his tone so much!! I’ve never heard of them before, I’m hearing so many great songs from the community!
Likewise, brother!
Absolutely LOVING these punk videos man. You are awesome! I know you're getting bombarded with suggestions but:
Karl Alvarez (Descendents/ALL)
Todd Kowalski (Propaghandi)
Both are absolute bass legends in the punk world (right up there with Matt Freeman).
Keep up the GREAT work!
I'm the One by the Descendants is a great example of Karl's playing AND songwriting. Not as familiar with Propagandhi except to say they are fucking MONSTERS live. Maybe the tightest punk band I've ever seen.
Brian Robinson is an incredible musician! Wilhelm are in my top 5 banda all time - musically you'll be on your seat with every song
This song is lilely in drop D
A Wilhelm Scream, along with Propagandhi whose name is popping up a lot in the comments and are definitely worth checking out, are part of the Tech Punk sub genre which is an extention of Skate Punk.
defining punk is so not punk to me
HOT WATER MUSIC plz! Jason Black one of the most amazing punk bassists ever! "moonpies for misfits" or "caution" or "trademark" would be doope
not only is the bass playing amazing.. but the guitar work as well, how they switch the bass tapping over to the guitars and the bass goes in to non tap playing is brilliant
Killer album thru n thru!!! Glad you were stoked on it.
Love these videos. Stoked you’re doing some punk vids
Oh, hell yeah! I’m stoked to see you doing this!!!
Love that this channel has been giving so much love to punk rock bass players!
love that you are covering punk music, so cool to hear you breaking down these songs.
Love AWS! It was fun seeing you on the rollercoaster of surprise 😊
Loving these videos, this is the music i love, and they are such underrated players and song writers it's criminal. Punks not dead, it gets better
awesome brian is such a monster. he does play finger style. he was in the fullblast also a great band.
Loving the punk series !! Keep up the good work !!
Just because of this song, he is technically the best bass player in punk rock
Watching your face literally light up listening to and analyzing these bands I grew up with gives me a renewed appreciation. Great vids; great series. Thanks for putting these positive vibes out there and showing people there’s some crazy talented folks in the punk scene. Gets overlooked.
One of the most talented punk bands ever. They’re all amazing musicians. Love AWS. Top 5 fav punk band for me
Hell yeah dude!!!! Actually so stoked you listened to this one
And theyre just as incredible live man, one of the best shows ive had the privilege of attending
Brian Robinson is the best bass player to grace the punk hardcore scene. His old band The Fullblast's bass riffs are also insane
Full blast was awesome!!!
Fullblast!!

The Fullblast was fucking awesome!
Great vid. Just wanted to echo others suggestion for Descendents, Propaghandi, and Streetlight Manifesto, But I also wanted to throw out:
Frenzal Rhomb- Ray Ahn Is My Spirit Animal
Infectious Grooves- Violent and Funky
Leftover Crack- Gang Control
Choking Victim- 5 Finger Discount
Melodic hardcore is when the punks evolved into better musicians...the punk never left....
What a band. What a bassist. Criminally underrated. So pleasing when new peeps get to hear them and appreciate the chops. Subscribed
I'm so stoked to hear more of these guys. Thanks so much for the sub! Cheers!
I saw these guys with the Bouncing Souls last year, and they were amazing! Brian has so much fun when he plays. I'll toss another vote for Hot Water Music, too! Jason Black on bass and George Rebelo on drums makes for a fantastic punk rhythm section. You need to check out Fugazi sometime as well.
With "A Wilhelm Scream" there are a ton of technical songs. It's a great group, maybe perfect.
I choose to believe the guitarists in Wilhelm are constantly shredding maiden at all times. Eating, sleeping, just non stop shredding.
Wilhelm is punk, it just sounds different cause this is what punk should be
Toured with these maufks for 14 years. Seen them hundreds of times at this point, literally! lol Theyre by far one of the best live bands you will ever see. Aint a band out there that gives you more bang for your buck! Grinders, groovers, and shakers!
And as far as i know, most songs are in either E-standard or Drop D, less than a handful in Drop C, like Bulletproof Tiger (another banger you gotta wrap your earbuds around)
@@radchad508bulletproof tiger might be my favorite AWS song. ❤️
“Refused - The deadly rhythm”
I love watching him discover punk rock in real time. I look forward to each of these videos drops.
Awesome bands and awesome dudes. Seeing this played up close live was epic 🤘
This whole album is incredible. Great video bud keep it up!!
That intro 😂 Love always your stuff and then I discover new band/artist . Thanks to you and thanks to the community! ❤
I love watching your journey into the amazing world of punk rock in real time.
this just keeps getting better and better ❤
Ho my god! I can't believe you are covering this song! AWS is my favorite band and this is my favorite song! This is so cool that you go that deep into punk!
I love this band so much
One of my fav bands. So good live, too!!!
Thanks for taking the recommendation!
Love these punk videos, keep em coming!
Sheeeet AWS! Those guys are so tight, nice to see them getting the props for the chops
Another vote for Propaghandi! Cut into the earth off Potemkin city limits would be a great bass listen
I came here to say that I saw them live last year in Hamburg and their sound is real clean. Seeing they do it live in a small venue was super nice. Could see it from very up close! The vocalist and I spend some time talking after the show. Super nice guy. Thx for giving some attention to AWS. They deserve so much more!
Melodic hardcore is a subset of punk music. That's as simply as I can put it 😅
I’m glad i didn’t find your channel a long time ago. Now I’ve been goin down a rabbit hole of all your punk/ska vids. The Decline has definitely been the best you’ve put out.
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoyed it man. Cheers!
so nice to see how this man discover punk rock for himself)
Yeah that bass is insane.
Loving what you're doing! Cheers
It is! Thanks Jonathan!
Dude, you are going full punk and that is wonderfull 😂
My favorite band every personally, and critically underrated in terms of technical chops. Seeing this is great as an into for people who want to get into a band that keeps pushing the boundaries!
HOT WATER MUSIC needs to be next, their early albums Jason Black is at his best. They are considered an Emo band which the 90's Era it was still in the Punk family. Jason black and Jorge (bass and drums) are jazz trained guy's
Love A Wilhelm Scream! I never heard of them before but then I saw them live as a support act in a Lagwagon show. Man I was blown away by how they played, been hooked ever since :)
Oh and Lagwagon - Surviving California pls 🙃
Lol me too years ago. Atleast 10 to 12 years if not longer. I am not a fan I just haven't listen to them that much but I might start
I was lucky enough to catch them 3 times in 2023, once opening for the Menzingers, a headline show and opening for the Flatliners and Gob. Always a great show and appreciative of the crowd
Saw them open for pennywise in Amsterdam . I have been a fan ever since.
Take a shot every time, “That’s cool” is said 😂😂 thanks for taking our suggestions!!
I know. God, it was bad on this one. I’ll work on it 😅
@@LowEndUniversityhaha no worries my guy! Us punks are stoked on your videos lately!
My favorite band. I was just thinking there’s no way he would do a Wilhelmina song and here it is!!!!!!
