I lost a very close friend to brain cancer last year. Some weeks before his passing, he put me in charge of the music at his funeral, and he requested only one song: Bro Hymn! I thought it was a bit unfit for a funeral, so I found an acoustic cover to play during the service. At some point, I had remorse... He requested the original, not a pale copy. I added the song to the lineup at the last minute to be played at the end of the ceremony. And the rest is history (to me), every one of his friend raised up to sing the choruses. For a brief three minutes, we were teen again and Bill was still with us. That how powerful this simple riff is!
Lost my mom at 18 and whenever I want remember her I listen to it cause when she was alive she kept talkin to me stoping listening to this 'demon music' which in fact is true love!
Band is definitely on my bucket list! My brother gave me the full circle album for my birthday in our teens and I think it was in my CD player in my car for 3 months straight!
Bro Hymn means a lot to me. I saw Pennywise several times in the 90s, originally when Thirsk was alive and later after he had passed. My brother was with me for many of those shows. That same brother of mine unfortunately passed away more than a decade ago. Fast forward to 2024 and I saw Pennywise live for the first time in over 20 years. In the context of losing my brother and a few others close to me over the years, Bro Hymn had taken on a completely new meaning that I didn't fully understand as a teenager. It was bittersweet, but incredible. When it is performed live, it's not just Pennywise playing the song, the entire crowd is involved. It's truly an experience.
Every punk band I've been in since this song came out, and that's quite a few, the bass player always wanted to cover this song. It is a bass player's song for sure.
It's also very easy... we started a band with a couple of friends in our 20's, none of us had any experience with an instrument and this was the first song we managed to cover without it sounding absolutely terrible 😅
Covering this is the best way to get the crowd involved. It doesn't matter if it's a band's first show and the rest of their set sucks, the audience will sing along.
Out here in my scene just about ever punk band has covered this to the point it's been over played for 20 years. Doesn't stop us from playing it every time it's requested though!
me too buddy. The voice of justin screaming and crying always make me emotional. Last year I was at the punk in the park and justin sang his part of the song but he song for their dad that passed away. It was awesome.
Really? It's a very strange choice given how it's the same bassline the entire time and it's not complicated beyond being a 6 note run instead of 4/8. The song it's great and has an important message, but there's very little too dissect here.

If you’ve ever lost someone special this song is an anthem to your friend, brother or sister. I’ve loved this song for 30 years. Never fails to uplift when you’re feeling down.
One of the many times I saw them live, the crowd kept the chant (and the pit) going well past when they were off-stage. The band came back in one at a time and reprised the chorus. Felt like it went on forever, and I think we were all hoping it would.
Like a valcano, it builds and builds until you have to explode in chant. The emotional Rollercoaster it takes you on is amazing for a simple song. Exactly like loosing someone. I saw them open for Danzig. I went to the front towards the end of PW. As soon as I got near the pit. I lost 2 buttons off my vest and my beer disappeared into the crowd😅

Iconic song, touching tribute, been a Pennywise fan since the early 90s! This was the goal jingle for a Bundesliga soccer club over years (VfB Stuttgart)... didn't love the club, but loved the song, sung by 40.000! When my club once lost 0:7 in Stuttgart, at least the music was good... 😉😁 Thanks for your reaction, cheers from Germany🤘
I'm new to your channel and I absolutely LOVE that you're looking to the more technical punk bands (Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream etc). I think you should check out some lesser known and even more technical punk bands like, Fair Do's, Almeida, Action Men, Darko (UK), Much The Same (their track Skeletons is a bassline to behold), Belvedere and Straighten Things Out (bassist from that band had an injured left hand so fretted everything the opposite way and his basslines may as well be sorcery).
One of the bittersweet things about punk is all the tribute songs. I lost my brother a few years ago, and while songs like these make me cry it also makes me feel less alone. Rancid's Otherside in particular, a lot of the lyrics are true for me and him, and a Rancid concert was the last time I saw him
There isn't a single bass line that can get me tearing up like this one. When I was stationed in Korea as a 20-something, we had a little rock band that played at a little bar in the vil in Waegwan. We would end our 'shows' with this song. The energy, the message, the gang vocals at the end...it was always such a powerful moment. I still get misty when I hear the opening drive from the baseline. Absolutely epic.
Best live song ever!!!!! The crowd interactions I've had at Pennywise shows throughout the years have been priceless. Love the band. If I remember correctly, Jason wrote the piano intro to the song Unknown Road from the album with the same name. They later featured the whole piano piece on the album Full Circle.
Great time for this video, my best friends since kindergarten passed away last week, and this was always one of our favorites to blast while we were driving. RIP Max, this one's for you!
I like how enthused dude is in these videos. It's almost like I am hearing these songs for the first time. However, you can tell that he is hearing songs for the first time, not only because he says that he's never heard the music before, but also because he likens Black Sabbath to Trash Metal. With that being said, Bro Hymn is one of the first songs I learned to play on bass. It will always be a favorite. 🤘
First time seeing your videos. Just dropped into my recommended feed. Loved this. Massive PW fan from back in the 90s in my teens. This gave me such epic goosebumps as only nostalgic music can. I'm gonna watch your metallica orion next, which was the early 2000s for me, my early 20s and the next stage of my music development. I saw Penywise live a bunch of times and yes the mood was epic.
Brilliant reaction and breakdown of what this song is and what it means. That chorus is the perfect catharsis for anyone who’s lost someone they were close to. When a whole venue is singing along, it’s very powerful indeed.
I love your comment on the "energy" of the intro. I feel like the tone set for the energy continues throughout the song even when all the instruments and gang chorus come in. Probably why it feels so great as a fan of the Anaheim Ducks (Bro Hymn is used as their goal song and beloved by fans).
When I played with PW a few years back Jim pulled me and one of my mates on stage mid song to sing this before getting the rest of the support bands on to do the crowd vocals for the end of the song. I think maybe my favourite memory.
This song always makes me think about my friend Adam who passed away in a car accident when we were in high school in 1997. It also makes me think about the brotherhood I had with all of our friends in the wake of this tragedy. I try not to listen to this song often so that it’s more meaningful when I do hear to it. It gives me goosebumps every. single. time.
Thank you so much for analyzing this iconic song. I will always remember seeing them live, ending the show with this song and asking security to let anybody comes on stage. The stage ended full, no room left, and the whole crowd singing along. It still gives me shivers thinking about this moment almost than 30 years ago.
Trust me, there is nothing like being in the pit during the song. Everyone coming together to sign this song (crowd chant). Gives me goosebumps everytime I see them live. Yes, it is used in sports. Jacksonville Jaguars used it for touchdown scores at home games. It's equally cool as hell getting the whole crowd doing the chant.
I was always only just a casual Pennywise fan. Then I saw them live. More correctly, saw them play this song live. The energy and performance was insane. Instantly converted me to a diehard.
About 25 years ago, during my college years, some friends and I took a road trip to spend 4th of July in Manhattan Beach, CA (the hometown of one of the friends). On the afternoon of the 4th, after sharing several drinks with some locals, we walked along the ocean to the next town over, Hermosa Beach, where we watched Pennywise play live from the front porch of a house to a cul-de-sac full of surfers, skaters, and punks. I will never forget the pure joy I felt when they closed their set with Bro Hymn while I jumped around arm-in-arm with my friends, all of us screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs.
I can't hear this song and not tear up any more. Like some others said, I've always loved this song, and it closes out all the Pennywise shows, but when I lost a friend and was dealing with the emotions of it, I put this song on and wept. It is a powerful uplifting remembrance for those we've lost.
I get goose bumps and have no choice but to move when thos comes on. One of my most favorite, influential songs of all time. To all my friends from Valdosta back in the early '90's , miss you guys.
I haven't watched yet, but Bro Hymn, Stickin' In My Eye, and Chick Magnet were the first bass lines so many punk fans of a certain age learned back in the day. *Guilty as charged.
Single most berserk pit i have ever experienced was at my first Pennywise show at the Theater in Fort Lauderdale back in 97' That ish was pure insanity...looks like the whole room was running at 2x speed, the whole club was a pit. Madness
This is the first song I learn when I got a bass. You're definitely right when thinking a Pennywise live show is crazy !! This song is really simple, repetitive but man, this is an anthem, easy to sing, easy to remember with a heavy message of brotherhood, beautiful lyrics! Thanks for this video.
I saw them at Warped Tour in 1996 just a few days before Jason died. They dedicated this song to him wishing him to get better. A year later I saw them again and the dedication took on a whole new meaning - very emotional.
I remember i cover That song in 1993 in a few concerts. i played the guitar riffs, but i Muted alot my play, to hear the Bassline. My Bassist pick the song with his bare hands, (no pick) and sounds gorgeus. One of the best parts of my life. We cover some Pennywise, Lagwagon and others like Misfits or Suicidal Tendencies. And was some fun :)
Just recently saw them play this song live again! 10k people all singing together swaying moshing crowdsurfing! Saw a bunch of tears in the crowd too. Was awesome!
This song has a lot of meaning to myself and my friends in the local band scene. My first band covered the song as a tribute to a friend that passed away a month before the show. Whenever I am in a band and there is a death in the "family", the next show we cover this song. I have been to a few Pennywise shows and the energy in the crowd when this song is played is electric.
I’ve been going to pennywise shows since i was 15 (28 years😢) including back in July for NOFX’s last tour, and this song never gets old. I also lost a close friend almost 20 years go that shared a love of this band and punk rock in general, so I’ll never stop listening to this song/band!
I think I may have suggested this band before, but if you dig the sporting event vibe, you should check the Toy Dolls. Pretty much all their songs have what sounds like hard chorus from sporting events, and Olga, the only permanent member over the band's history is pretty much a guitar virtuoso in his own right and he has a signature playing style. You should check Dez the Demon Decorator, or Terry Talking, from their Absurd Ditties album (the album also has an instrumental cover of Toccata in Dm that goes insanely hard); another track that is very bass forward and has the hard chorus (and opens with a sea chanty lol) is Decca's Drunken Dilemma from their Episode XIII album.
Grew up listening to Bro hymn tribute either in my Dad's van or his Stereo Room. He always made sure to listen to the hidden track which is a piano melody written by Jason. It always hits hard. "This is how Jason would have wanted it!!!!!"-My Dad yelling across the house with his fist in the air while the rest of us either laughed at it or joined him with our fists in the air. RIP Jason, Rip Dad ❤
Your analysis is always next level. About 15 years ago I was in a punk band, and we covered this song at every gig. Certainly a crowd pleaser. In the live version, they end the song off with that galloping beat and we did this too - pit goes absolutely bananas
Im.going to see NoFX tonight at Riot Fest here in Chicago. Then again on Sunday for their last show here. Pennywise will play right before them Sunday night. Pennywise closes their set with Brohym and I'll be standing next to my best friend/ drummer for it all!!!!!
As a surf punk growing up in San Diego Pennywise was like the soundtrack to my late teen and early 20’s. This is always the last song at every Pennywise show and the audience sings along, usually with people being pulled onto stage and given the mic It’s a pretty cool tradition they still do
Perfect people, Land of the Free other great Pennywise tracks with cool bass lines. Honestly, almost all of their songs have great bass tracks. It would be cool is if you have a drummer friend come on and take a crack at some of these drum tracks. Drumeo is fantastic, but they don't get to the punk stuff like you have been. I've seen them live. The entire crowd regardless of how big the venue sings "Whoooaaa Whooooaa Whoooaa Whooaa" with the singable part of the riff. Its crazy. They have a live album. You should check it out.
I remember watching them at punk rock holiday in Slovenia, there were flares and everyone invaded the stage during bro hymn, Fletcher was crowdsurfing playing the song. 3 hours later lying trying to sleep in my tent i heard people walking by still singing "woooah woaah wooah".
I was in high school in the mid-late 90’s in the peak of the 90’s punk scene. Bro Hymn now, I still can’t wrap my head around this, is a pretty old song. ANYTIME I hear that intro it hits me anew. I truly feel bad for those out there who’ve never heard Bro Hymn.
Always a great song, I’ve been lucky enough to hear it live several times. At a show in Sydney that Pennywise played with the Bronx I was basically standing next to Byron the drummer for the entire show, the Guy is an animal. This is the kind of song that the crowd starts singing before the band even starts playing it. It’s spin tingling. Also, the band puts the chorus into double time after the last chorus and gives it a full punk rock Gallup. It’s great for a circle pit.
This song will always remind me of my best friend who passed away in 1997, when we were 16. We were huge into Cali skate punk and pennywise was a staple since we were 12. This song will always remind me of my friend and it always takes me back to us being care free kids
I saw them play a few weeks ago for the sixth time. It is always so intense and powerful when they (realistically we all) sing this song. I'm still feeling the high from that show!!
Sounds a lot like Social Distortion - 1945. If Fat Mike is on a Pennywise set, usually he will come onto stage and yell ATOM BOOOOOMB, TNT instead of the WOOOAH parts. Always cracks me up
Go see them live, the feeling in the crowd is very emotional and very unifying. To grab a complete stranger that has lost someone close like you and almost circle pit hug of raw emotion
An absolute classic! I saw Pennywise twice this year and both times they had the openers come join them on stage and the bassist play along to the song. An absolutely iconic punk bass line!
Welp. That's on me for going to the comment section after the intro to the video already had me tearing up a bit.
Amazing story, thank you for sharing

I think you should check out some lesser known and even more technical punk bands like,
Fair Do's, Almeida, Action Men, Darko (UK), Much The Same (their track Skeletons is a bassline to behold), Belvedere and Straighten Things Out (bassist from that band had an injured left hand so fretted everything the opposite way and his basslines may as well be sorcery).
Thank you for adding a little depth to one of my favorite songs of all time.
My pleasure!
Love this so much!
Love the whole unknown road album
This song is great. Whenever i saw it played live noone was still or not singing along. i hope it gets played forever.
Great time for this video, my best friends since kindergarten passed away last week, and this was always one of our favorites to blast while we were driving. RIP Max, this one's for you!
This is usually what Pennywise closes their shows with. And the crowd is always amped
Instead of the tribute version you should watch one of any of the many live performances. It just hits different
I recommend this version because the sound quality is surprisingly good somehow. th-cam.com/video/qn50qFymSp8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2XTKmEi9rS7qFVIZ
I saw them way back in the mid 90s. It's just raw power.
Welcome aboard, man! Hope you enjoyed them!
Brilliant reaction and breakdown of what this song is and what it means. That chorus is the perfect catharsis for anyone who’s lost someone they were close to. When a whole venue is singing along, it’s very powerful indeed.
I can attest that it truly gets the whole crowd going at the show!!! Thanks for choosing this one.
Sooooo been waiting for this
I recommend their track F*ck Authority next.
I love your comment on the "energy" of the intro. I feel like the tone set for the energy continues throughout the song even when all the instruments and gang chorus come in. Probably why it feels so great as a fan of the Anaheim Ducks (Bro Hymn is used as their goal song and beloved by fans).
Such an amazing song. The tribute version is so great I'm looking forward to the reaction as well!
When I played with PW a few years back Jim pulled me and one of my mates on stage mid song to sing this before getting the rest of the support bands on to do the crowd vocals for the end of the song. I think maybe my favourite memory.
That's probably the best analyse of Bro Hymn I ever heard. Who thaught you could be so deep about a such simple song :)
This song always makes me think about my friend Adam who passed away in a car accident when we were in high school in 1997. It also makes me think about the brotherhood I had with all of our friends in the wake of this tragedy.
I try not to listen to this song often so that it’s more meaningful when I do hear to it. It gives me goosebumps every. single. time.
The energy live is amazing I'm so glad I was able to catch them many times
An excellent choice of song, Sir.
RIP Billy and Gonzo.
long ago in small venue 3000 peeps , they asked the audience to come on stage with them for Bro Hymn , it was awesome
Core memory unlocked!
That feeling you get, love y’all.
It is a powerful uplifting remembrance for those we've lost.
this song for any 90s kid who lost a friend along the way. RIP matthew i love you
Dang, song brings me back to mosh pits and Warped tours 🙂 Love when songs start with the bass
Finally got to see these guys in Petaluma, CA about a decade ago. Killer show!
The phenomenal bassline of the late great Jason Matthew Thirsk
I think this song is inmortal!!! Great video man!!! 🤘🤘🤘
And was some fun :)
warped tour 99-ish at LaSalle park, Buffalo. imagine an entire music festival chanting along. A highlight of my youth.
Just recently saw them play this song live again! 10k people all singing together swaying moshing crowdsurfing! Saw a bunch of tears in the crowd too. Was awesome!
I love Pennywise, love to hear you breaking this one down! I grew up playing
this.
That one is actually on the list! 😎
@@LowEndUniversity Heck yeah, I really need to get into the patreon game to be more in the loop on stuff 👀
Love it! Thanks for the kind words!
Loved this one. Loved this a lot, thank you, mate. ❤
Im.going to see NoFX tonight at Riot Fest here in Chicago.
Then again on Sunday for their last show here. Pennywise will play right before them Sunday night.
Pennywise closes their set with Brohym and I'll be standing next to my best friend/ drummer for it all!!!!!
Hey, me too!
@JakeBass666
Fuckin A bro! Well, if you see 2 Guys with very prominently displayed/matching misfits and bad religion tattoos, make our acquaintance!
I’ve never clicked on one of your videos so fast!
You're the best!
Gotta say ive been a fan of punk since around 1997 and you're breaking down all the good stuff
The Full Circle version is my fav
As a surf punk growing up in San Diego Pennywise was like the soundtrack to my late teen and early 20’s.
This is always the last song at every Pennywise show and the audience sings along, usually with people being pulled onto stage and given the mic
It’s a pretty cool tradition they still do
seeing this live at nofx's last ever (3) shows is gonna make me cry
This song without fail always makes me cry. It is truly and EPIC song and turns and entire crowd at shows into a mosh pit.
To those we have all lost.
One of the best punk songs ever written.
Yoooo love this song. Good one dude.
Closed every warped tour with bro hymn and I made sure to wait to see it every time I went! Legendary
If any punk band plays the chorus at a live show, EVERYONE sings along!
An absolute classic! I saw Pennywise twice this year and both times they had the openers come join them on stage and the bassist play along to the song. An absolutely iconic punk bass line!
We all have a brother that we've lost , and we sing along to this song , it shows we still remember them 🖤
Miss you Z
