➡️ Today, I'm hearing Strung Out for the first time! Tons of you urged me to take a listen to late bassist Jim Cherry's playing, and his work on "Firecracker" showcased a really effective take on using fast bass chords within a skate-punk style. Setting up the song with those lower-register intervals really supported the track with a beefy intensity and energy. I love the note ranges he chose: JUST low enough to thicken up the mix, but JUST high enough to hear a clear separation in his implied melodies. I discuss some of the music theory behind the song's progression, the subtle root movements in the bass line, and how this very dense arrangement kicks off 1996's "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" with an epic bang. At the end, I also gave a little impromptu lecture on what I've learned reviewing punk songs so far... 😉🙏🏼🍒

Strung Out will always have a special place in my heart. Suburban and Twisted were the soundtrack to my teen years, followed quickly by American Paradox.
don't miss "Live in a Dive" one of the best of the series.
Live in a Dive is absolutely perfect
yes! About time, my dude! It's so cool to watch you get to hear all this stuff for the first time. Slowly but surely, we're turning you into a punkrock channel!😉
The genie is out of the bottle! 😇
@@LowEndUniversity anything by strung out is rad! Chris Aiken picked up right where Jim left off. Twisted By Design is, in my opinion, is their best record. You should definitely check it out! You're welcome🤣
@@definitelynotjasonbateman2567hey leave some hope for us progressive metal fans
@@definitelynotjasonbateman2567 Dont forget Elements of Sonic Defiance or Exile in Oblivion, hell any of their records. Do Pulley next!! Mandingo
@@lt_johnmcclaneYou gotta wait for a while buddy
This album is an utter frenzy. Firecracker starts it off perfectly. It just gets better and better and really wakes you up! It's relentless.
You should absolutely check out No Use For A Name when you get a chance. Another fantastic Fat Wreck / skate punk band with that lead style bass you talk about. Matt Riddle is an epic and under appreciated player. Im a huge fan of their catalog (mostly 1999 and onwards) but here are some songs I’d recommend checking out where the bass shines a bit: Justified Black Eye, Angela, Coming Too Close, Part Two, Nailed Shut, Check for a Pulse, Under the Garden, The Dregs of Sobriety, Exit, Chasing Rainbows
No Use. Best Fat Wreck band? I think so.
Please don’t ignore Jordan Burns amazing drumming. 10/10!!
This whole band is talented. They are all amazing in their own right.
RIP Jim Cherry. If you like this, you should check out the newer stuff with bassist Chris Aiken. His play through on Rats in the wall is fantastic. Will not disappoint
Chris is a beast in his own right. Glad to see someone else show him love
It's almost like a different band, he should be l definitely give this song a shot
He sounds pretty tight on Black Maps and the love the bass outro on it as well
chris has written most of the bands music ever since jim passed.
CA is a stud on guitar and bass. And such a rad dude. He has really solidified himself as a core member of the band, and especially with Jake touring with his cover band
I'm here to relive my youth.

@@LowEndUniversity 🍻
Lifelong Strung Out fan here. Jim Cherry was special, but Chris Aiken (current bassist) is a beast well. He even fills in on guitar for them during some tours. “Paperwalls” is another track featuring a great Jim Cherry bass line.
I've seen him (chris) on both bass and guitar duties over the years. What a player! Makes me want to play more... or quit.. I'm not sure which
As a bassist I agree with this assessment. Aiken is my 2nd fav punk player. Freeman the goat.
Boys … Chris writes most the guitar … he’s a fucking weapon!!!
Paperwalls……that’s a good song
Paperwalls is my all time fav song!
Perfection for my ears at least ❤
i literally screamed finally as i opened this video
same. scared my wife.
My favorite Strung Out record
My favorite Strung Out record too! "Wrong Side of the Tracks" on this album is my favorite Strung Out song. I listened to it on my way to work this morning. Although, they have many good albums and their later records get more metal.
Twisted by design is my favorite, but this is my second favorite lol
No doubt! Suburban, Another and then Twisted 😊
Blinded by Bigwig is one that I don't think a lot of people will ask for. It's not as big a band as some of the other that were covered here, but it has a pretty good bassline!
This channel has made me want to pick the bass back up. Great stuff!
Bigwig ❤
Man if he did Blinded he'd probably look into more Bigwig. One of my all time fave bands
Excellent choice. Suicide Machines - New Girl is also one I've been recommending. And Schleprock might be interesting too.
Strung Out, Pulley and the incredible Zero Down...With a Lifetime to Pay. RIP. He also mentions production a number of times - Ryan Greene produced/engineered a lot of the great sounding west coast punk albums of the era
I saw Strung Out live during this era and they were even better. Incredible skate punk band for such a long time.
I remember standing at Warped in 1998, mouth agape, absolutely mesmerized. I was already a fan, but seeing them melt my goddamn face was next-level.
You're going through my childhood lately !! absolutely awesome! Cheers!
You have to watch some live footage of Jim playing. I remember watching shows at the Troubadour and he was a big guy, so his bouncing around on such a tiny stage was fun to watch. The energy of the band was always amazing live!
th-cam.com/video/1aTqG5hmDzc/w-d-xo.html
A little tip is Strung Out is D standard tune in must of the albums. Please check it out Satanic Surfers, songs: Dont Fade away, Soothing, Even time stood still. Wiil not disapoined you.
Upvote this comment to the skies
I second that. Tomek Sokolowski was great on 666 Motor Inn
I already suggested it. This song has greeeaaattt bass
Soothing for the win!!!
100
One of the first albums I bought. Love the intensity of all the tracks! Great break down as always, keep up the awesome work 👍🏻
Appreciate you so much!
@@LowEndUniversity you should check out the bass on the guys from Descendents other band All - Think the world.
Rats in the walls by Strung out, there is a playtrough by Chris Aiken, their bass player, on youtube. Super solid right and.
The whole album delivers- Nik from Whippersnapper
It’s so cool to see how many Fans they have in here, what an amazing song! I’ve never heard this one before, Punk gives Bass a chance, I love that! It’s so true
Story is, Eddy Van Halen himself dropped by one of their shows and gave these guys two EVH heads, a dirty old punk band couldnt ask for a more weighty endorsement than that. I think you'd need to give Transmition Alpha Delta a listen to fully understand it though.
Damn, that's sick!
@@LowEndUniversity BTW I liked your bit on "From the heart", punk has always been a music specifically inteded to illicit a purely emotional response. I think that was why Nu Metal blew up, it was the same concept but more marketable and on a bigger stage. Its telling that alot of punk singers do acoustic tours, and the crowd engagement is still on a level that most acoustic virtuoso's only dream of.
Don't miss out on Good Riddance! Their album "A Comprehensive Guide to Moderne Rebellion" is another Fat Wreck clascic and was released in the same year as the mentioned Strung Out record. I highly recommend the opener "Weight of the world" or "A credit to his gender'. Both songs have great driving bass lines and the whole record is amazing.
I purchased the record together with " Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" and listened to both of them on repeat because they are so great.
Strung Out and Boy Sets Fire will always have a special place in my ❤
Fat Mike was weary about signing them, but Jim kept bugging him…so FM said if he redid the floors of his home in The Bay he would release “another day in paradise”. So Jim and Jason went to FM’s place and put in the work. They’ve been on Fat Wreck ever since.
"Thanks for all that carpet and your songs"
@@nobirdsnomasters
That song was sad af man….
Strung out are dope and Jim Cherry was great. If people haven't already they should check out his other band Zero Down
I live my life with no apologieeessss
Dont forget Pulley
His work with Pulley too
its easy to "sound good" with a pick.....any average guitar can "sound good" on a bass
He also played bass for a not so well know band called Frankenstein.
When you said "it sounds skate punkishh to me" I screamed in my head "IT IS SKATE PUNK" ❤
Rufio - Road To Recovery, the intro is sick
Good (and underrated) call!
@@ceejluige4816in what world is Rufio underrated? ;)
yeah, rufio is not underrated, this one is underrated: CHASER - Good Times. take a look
@@datenschutzification The crew I hung around with (on Long Island) didn't really care for Rufio aside from myself and my best friend. I have no idea why, but that's the way it was. I guess I assumed they were underrated everywhere. My apologies if I offended anyone but still to this day "Save the world" is one of my favorite songs.
@@ceejluige4816 not offended at all here. They never were as big as your average fatwreck band but in my opinion perhaps I suppose is well known among fans of the genre.
8:15 Jim is mostly a finger player. That does sound pick but I never saw him use a pick live. In fact, I saw Blink-182 open for Strung Out. Mark broke a string and Jim handed him his bass. Mark is a pick player and completely scratched up this cow sticker Jim had on his bass. Jim was so upset that he spent the entire Strung Out set ragging on Mark and Blink. He couldn’t let it go.
🤣❤
This album is by far the best punk album I've ever heard!!!
its the only punk album you have listen to?....
@@sebg2086 been listening to Punk rock since 1994 pal.
This was such a spiritual experience first hearing this album and this beautiful intro all those many, many years ago.
I almost felt transported into the Californian desert.
Rest in power Jim Cherry! Great player and the driving force behind early Strung Out. As others have said, would be cool to do a comparison with their current bassist Chris Aiken. His playing is quite different and the band’s sound changed fairly significantly when he joined.
Honestly I am stoked you chose this track, Jim was and still is, a legend to me! Jim's other band is most definitely worth a look, check out "Zero Down" where he was also the vocalist. He also played in a band called "Pulley". Incredibly talented and had he not been taken early, would have been an absolute powerhouse in the genre.
❤
@@WynndiCherry his music was in the background to some of the best times of my life. I had to put on "with a lifetime to pay". Brought a tear to my eye thinking about those times and how much they meant to us.
Strung Out was a punk band that metal heads could get into. Jake Kiley's guitar playing style and tone were very accessible to headbangers!
Very cool to see this on here, Jin Cherry is such an absolute legend and an amazing songwriter. He actually alternated between finger style and playing with a pick on certain songs, surely the intro here is picked:)
such a good band live especially
I saw them last week, they're still crushing "Firecracker" live.
About time to have Strung Out featured here!
Ryan Greene was the producer of this record, and pretty much the sound that you praise in the video, has been the benchmark for many skate punk bands, the so called "fat wreck sound". Additional note on the bass intro; there are two bass tracks, one for the higher notes/chords, and the second track is root (lower) notes, hence, that feeling of perfect frequency balance
Another great breakdown! I'm getting amped just sensing your excitement hearing these punk songs for the first time. Strung Out has so many killer songs. As others have mentioned, Chris Aiken does a great play through of Rats in the Walls. You definitely need to check it out!
Thanks Mark, enjoyed your commentary!
Absolute masterpiece this album. Has everything you'd want from this kind of music and more.
This whole album slaps
I really can’t stress enough how much need to listen to the horse, by a Wilhelm scream, or anything by those guys. Amazing bassist
Check out the video I posted 2 days ago! Top 5 Punk Riffs 😎
Strung Out is very metal influenced. Check out Twisted By Design, lots of metal in that album.
Also, day whatever of asking you to check out Matt Freeman's Bass Bunker. You'll love it.
Check back Friday... 😎
They just get more and more metal in their discography.
Remember reading somewhere that they were heavily influenced by Pantera.
Yeah, my favorite song is Calling. Love the Guitar. Played it so often in guitar hero 😁
Another awesome video! SO is my favorite band!! This album is part of the Fatwreck Era that defined the skatepunk sound of the 90s. Ryan Greene was a huge huge influence in developing that sound.
Love hearing these new perspectives on music I´ve listened to so much over the years
Thanx for following up on that request.sickman
Friend once said to me, “the two most outward expressive forms of music is jazz and blues and punk and hardcore, no contest.” I’m of course bias, but I still think that’s pretty true.
So interesting! I love listening to your analysis, especially when talking about my all time favorite songs! Keep it up!
“They’re cramming a lot of notes in a short amount of time” I’m a strung out lifer and you just summed em up with that phrase 😂
One of my favorite bands. Jim Cherry was so awesome and wrote most of their best songs. He was such a good dude, too. Saw them many times when he was still with them, as well with Pulley. RIP Jim. Glad you enjoyed his playing.
Loving the Reaction Vids to Punk, Mark! So many great bands to even mention here. Notable stand out band for me is Pulley. Their Bass player Tyler is a hidden gem IMO. The song No "I" in Team has an awesome bassline all throughout. Keep up the good work
Loved your words on this one. This album is epic, I have it for 30 years now, always playing!
Yup, you nailed it, Strung Out is pretty firmly seated in the skate punk sub genre…heck I’d even go so far to say they started that sound!😄 Later they do get a bit heavier, more metalcore and technical, as they just continued to get better at playing and writing. They’re a super tight and technical band today, but they never really lose those signature Strung Out melody hooks! 🤟
My favourite song is probably Swan Dive, it’s a beautiful song, a real uplifting fist pumper that just inspires you immediately! City Lights is pretty damn good too, one of my favourite opening guitar riffs for sure, and the fuckin drums on that track, like damn! 😄Definitely catch them live if you ever get a chance! It’s an experience! 🔥
This album is an all timer for me and was my soundtrack for end of high school/beginning of college. They do indeed have a huge metal influence, which caused some issue initially to getting signed with Fat Wreck and is something that they lean into even more heavily as their career progresses. Jason, the singer, at one point really bristled against being labeled as having the Fat Wreck sound, too. If you do indeed do a full album reaction, I would probably have to sign up for my first Patreon. 😅
Jimmy was amazing. Really good bassist, brilliant song writer. He would use a pick for some songs, fingers for others (just depended on what the song needed). He also played guitar in Pulley, then played bass and lead vocals in Zero Down (great singer too...he could do it all!)
❤
Later strungout is metal punk hybrid. Exile into oblivion. First half sooo good. Black hawks over la. Songs of armor and devotion.
Dude, Transmission Alpha Delta!!
@@granthew71 Transmission is easily their best album!
I’ve seen Strung Out play live more than any other band, and was fortunate to be right in front of Jim at a show in 1998. They opened with Firecracker, and I’m pretty positive he used a pick just for this song. Love and really digging your channel since it popped up in my feed! 🙌
Your explanation of punk is spot on how i feel as well. Great video! I love Strung Out!
That whole album is awesome. Nice video!
These are like a trip through my past. All the stuff I listened to in high school and college. Takes me back.
💜 your takeaways from punk so far,, and hearing you say it out loud helps me remember why it meant so much to me, then and now,,
Good for you to finally get to listen to Strung Out,saw them live a few times and they always deliver, hoho.Great video and even greater reaction to one of my favourite bands.😊
Killer feature man, Jim was a force of nature and wrote some awesome guitar parts as well as Bass! Taught me so much and I always tried to keep his spirt alive when writing for the band!🙌🏼❤️
Been waiting for this one. Thank you!!
My pleasure!
Jordan Burns drums are also genre defining. Strung out were dope then and their new stuff is also incredible.
As youre saying. This being rhe opening track, actually says a lot about the album. Its a banger from head to finish.
Def consider putting it on you whole album reaction list.
Noted! 🫡
@LowEndUniversity tip. Considering all punks are self taught and have lousy technics n skills... try using a 0.5 pick so you can dig into the strings as hard and fast as possible (without having to worry they'll brake and ruin you) (cause that how we punks do it) (hahaha). (Thinks that key to how to approach getting the rhythm and sound of a (sk8)punker)
Love watching you react to the music I grew up on. So rad. Cheers. 🍻
Strungout has always been our thrash technical punk love.
Been waiting for this!
Check infrared by strike anywhere
Love these guys. Their new bass player is a guitarist turned bass
Love your reviews and insights. This record never lets up, you’ll dig it for sure. 10/10 🤘
Love that you're doing these punk vids and showing that, yeah it's 3 chord music, but there's layers there, good musicians and good song writing.
Punk bands from this era absolutely loved first inversion chords. I think it's because it's really easy to go from a power chord to a first inversion chord (without the 5th) and it obviously sounds really good. You'll see the I to V (first inversion) to vi progression in quite a few songs from the time.
This one was awesome thanks! Your whole channel rules and really helps with the understanding of tempo and my ear for the notes. As a punk bassist, “Detroit” by Rancid is one of my favorites to play. I think you’d get a kick out of that one.
Cool video, I’ve been hooked since I watched your Blink and Rancid videos
Aw, thanks friend, glad to have you here!
Hell yeah i was waiting for this!! Thank you so much!!
Hope you enjoyed it!
I definitely did! Thank you and keep on rockin!
I remember going to see Strung Out play this whole album to celebrate the 10 year anniversary.
now i need to listen to the rest of the album. this stuff is so good
‘Broken’ from their album ‘Another Day In Paradise’ is also a good song where you can hear Jim’s awesome bass playing. But make sure you’re listening to the original recording of this album. They recently remade their albums and it’s with the bass player that replaced him. And he’s awesome as well.
I am so thrilled to see you check out Strung Out. Going to echo many other posts here and say Chris Aiken's work with this band deserves a listen as well!
Welcome to one of my all time favorite punk bands of all time!! Skate punk is probably the right genre and how I’ve always thought of Strung Out. This album specifically was blasted a lot while skateboarding back in the mid 90’s by me and all my friends.
Love your thoughts on punk at the end. Spot on.
One of the best songs of all time by one of the best bands of all time. Top 5 for sure. Glad you are being educated on all the best stuff. You rule man keep the videos coming.
Also, that was a great explanation of low interval limits. I recently got an Ibanez SRC6MS bass and had to learn that the hard way 😂
I was into metal through my sophomore year then started to listen to punk with my skateboard buddies. The biggest difference to me was just what you said. Metal was centered on the guitars. Punk was centered on equal parts. Melodic but fast.
Love what you do a ton. Not just the punk but all of it.
Love it! You're right about them being able to hang in a more metal setting. I always felt Strung Out played a lot heavier than a lot of socal punk bands. You can really hear it in something like Bring Out Your Dead from the same album.
I LOVE THIS RECORD SO MUCH!
It's 5:00 a.m. in SLC and I REALLY want to jump behind my drums and give the neighborhood a rude awakening.
Loving your analysis of my favorite music from the 90’s. Please keep these coming! Please do “Outside” by No Use For A Name. RIP Tony.
Glad you got to listen to strung out man . They’ve been in the biz for over 30 years and they’re so not well known and should be . The singer brings melodic lyrics . The guitars are crazy sick and they all are straight up musicians .glad you gave them a listen and as you listen to how they progress you’ll be even more amazed
Such a classic intro and bass line. Jim Cherry also wrote a beautiful bass riff in the bridge of the song Paper Walls, on the album Twisted By Design. Most of their songs are in D standard and that was the remixed version btw which I feel sanitises the spirit of the original record.
Chris Aiken, his replacement (when he left for Pulley), is also a great player. Squier even gave him a Signature bass. Check "Velvet Alley".
Jim Cherry didn’t leave for Pulley, got kicked out of both bands and started Zero Down
One of my favorite bands!
I'll finally get a chance to see Strung Out this summer at Brakrock! Been a fan for 20 years.
You should check out The Lawrence Arms, an amazing trio from Chicago. While Beex is known for his drunken folly on stage he's no slouch on bass. I suggest giving Necrotism: Decanting the Insalubrious a listen
So glad to see StrungOut! Would love to see u do The Casualties "Criminal Class"
Give RUFIO a chance. Dope basslines! Check out: Road to Recovery; Above Me or Still. Awesome content btw. Greetings from Brazil!
Bring Out Your Dead, and Speedball!!!!… Those songs are amazing off this album
Love all your videos!! One to look at maybe is Beng Beng cocktail. The bests leave first
Fishbone - Bonin' in the Boneyard 😁
#1 of my 2 requests lol.
Fishbone are actually in the news right now, because 2 of the 4 founding members (including bassist Norwood Fisher) just left the band after 40+ years to pursue other interests.
Perfect time for you to learn about the ska glory that is Fishbone. They've said the band will continue... But I don't know if anyone can match Norwood
Please. Consider doing a react to a band called The Big Boys from Austin TX (1979-1985). Founders of funk/punk and skate punk. VERY unique bass player (Chris Gates). Youll be happily surprised by this band.
FUNFUNFUN!!!
Fun fact about Jim, he also was a Metal head in high school. But he hung around with a bunch of punks. He was also probably a better guitar player than he was a bassist. He was a good friend of mine. A few days before he passed I had tried to get him go see this band Calavera with
Me. He declined saying he was going to hang out with his wife and watch a movie. He invited me to a 4th of July party at his parents house, but for some reason or another I didn’t make it. He passed 3 days later. I wish I would have gone. Miss you Jim. RIP brother.
