    ➡️ It's a "2 FOR 1" special! Not only is it my first time hearing DESCENDENTS, but I'm checking out both "Myage" and "I'm The One" back to back to compare the playing styles of Tony Lombardo and Karl Alvarez. The songs were short, so why not? Both players presented very different playing styles, and it was a blast to hear each of their approaches. I talk about the genius vocal melody cadence in "Myage", what the down-picked bass sound adds to the song, the key-change modulation, and how Tony Lombardo steps OVER the drums to play bass fills and plows right through each drum groove. After hearing this track, Karl Alvarez had a really melodic, unpredictable approach by choosing many notes I didn't expect. I discuss the confusing chord progressions, chord voicings, and how Karl's melodies glue everything together in an ear-twisting way. Both of these guys impart a VASTLY different feel into the band's sound!

      Back in college I wrote Milo Aukerman when he was working at DuPont as a biochemist (I was studying at Penn and he had done some postdoc there, which is maybe how I had his email? I don't remember as it was 20 years ago). I had some questions about careers/passions and he graciously took time out to write me a thoughtful reply. It was a little gesture from a personal hero of mine from when I was even younger and I still think about it.

    Face to Face - Disconnected. Easily top 10 best punk bass tracks.

    • @chuckuni5366
      @chuckuni5366 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Disconnected is easily one of the best written bass lines in punk. So simple, so catchy. Loved it when I was young, then played it for my young kids 25+ years later. My 4 year old daughter memorized the melody after one listen and my 2 year old son picks up my bass and hands it to me expecting to hear the intro.
      Scott Shiflett on later Face to Face has the more aggressive and technically impressive lines, but Matt Riddle had some great ones that absolutely made the songs killer.
      Disconnected is a pop master piece, IMO.

    • @DS-mo5db
      @DS-mo5db 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Walk the walk is a better signature baseline in my opinion. But disconnected is a real good song indeed!!

    • @chuckuni5366
      @chuckuni5366 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Walk the walk is a good one, but I love the way the bass in Disconnected fits into the mix of the song (on either version) and is a little less straight forward. The bridge part mixes things up really nicely as well. It's less in your face, but still a huge part of the song - massively catchy.
      Similar to Velocity off of Big Choice. Round and mellow melody which then dumps into the rhythm with the driving but clanky finger tone that immediately makes the bass more percussive and the whole song blast forward. Great dynamics, which the self titled album is lacking simply because it's compressed against the limiter nearly the whole time.
      The tone on either Don't Turn Away or Big Choice is less refined -and arguably very low fi in the case of Don't Turn Away - but a perfect example of how less can be good in some cases too. Great textures that aren't exactly typical, even for the era.
      IMO of course....

    Propagandhi is a great punk band and I think Todd Kowalski is an underrated bass player.
    Todd first appeared on Propagandhi's Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes album, before that John K. Samson, of The Weakerthans fame, played bass.
    Night Letters off of Supporting Caste is worth checking out as is Cut Into the Earth off of Potemkin City Limits.
    Easily my favorite punk band and it's not even close.

In fact, they are essentially the Descendents with a different lead singer, formed out of a desire for the band to continue on after Milo left to focus on getting his master's degree in biochemistry. World's on Heroin is definitely the track to check out.

  • @MrSneaksful
    @MrSneaksful 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    Milo was recorded when they were 18-19 years old. "Im the one" was recorded 13 years later and you can hear the seasoned musicianship in the recording compared to the raw adolescence angst in the first album and thats what makes the first album so good.

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I know everyone loves Milo, but for me the signature Descendants sound is that harmonically unpredictable song structure, which was something they perfected later. I'd say the same thing about Ten Foot Pole, everyone liked Scott's vocals, but the locked up riffs and manic beat changes that made TFP unique, only really developed after Rev.

    i like these not only for your take on them and the education you apply to listening, but also for you to hear them all for the first time and how they might change how you look at music going forward. its way more "accessible" now than when i got into them, but punk musicians are among the pinnacle of creatives and out of the box thinking and its also a lot of that magic that made bands like nirvana so great to those who first heard them back in the 90s. i think its easy to look at punk on the surface as an outsider and think its cheap and snotty and uneducated music. but i i also think you'll agree its the complete opposite (genius often hiding in horrible quality recordings) its always been there and i applaud you for opening the door and taking a look in.

    really love what you're doing there! Putting the light on punk rock bass players is something we don't see often from non-punk musicians, so its a real pleasure to see you do that and enjoy it moreover! As for Karl Alvarez, "I'm the One" is great, but doesn't scratch the surface of what he is really capable of, technically and melodicaly. I think turnin to ALL ("Honey Peeps" for example, as suggested in another comment) whould be a great way to discover more from him, while still listening to a new band (plus the ALL/descendents story is quite interesting IMO)

    My man, thanks for pointing me towards this video. Solid review and can't go wrong with either era of Descendents. Appreciate your efforts.
    You mentioned exploring more of Karl Alvarez's playing. He spent some early days playing in a hardcore punk band from Utah called Massacre Guys with Stephen Egerton (precursor to Descendents). These two have been playing music together for longer than most people realize. MG is what you'd expect from an early 80's hardcore punk band, but still a super fun listen nonetheless. I'd recommend the track "Hunted" from their Behind the 8 Ball EP -- 45 seconds of pure intensity.

Tony's downstrokes are legendary but Karl it must be said is an absolute monster of a musician - any song off this record will prove it.
