Thanks your videos are great. Having read a lot about ancient battles, I often get good ideas, but find them really hard to execute in TW games. These vids showing you executing classic moves are really help.
Wayy late but been watching like all your videos as Ive been playing total war for a few years but was never actually very good at battle tactics i just wanted to say I actually managed to pull this off and in general youve brought me from losing battles i should win to winning battles i have 20% chance on. Thank you and keep going.
Party Elite, I used to be such a Warhammer noob. Your videos have made a world of difference, and now I'm actually winning battles where I'm the underdog. Much thanks for the work kid. Keep it up.
So i have been playing total war series , since shogun 1. So thb i thought i was skilled. Than i watch this video.. my jaw dropped. :x Thnx for the info.
That's the biggest problem with TW. AI is too dumb to practice anything but the standard frontline+cav tactic or a simple envelop. Human battles at 15+ units are too fast paced to do the micro required for some of the more complex tactics. And the battle usually spreads out too much if there's enough cavalry action going on. I wish CA, implemented a way to play a 20 stack game with several people controlling only a handfull amount of units.
Really nice video! You don't see many TH-camrs try to pull of more advanced tactics like this. Of course, many are more multiplayer focused, but some campaign tactics are a nice change anyway! This particular tactic will pay off when (hopefully) CA decide to extend the length of battles. 5 mins is a but ridiculous...
Just got through all the videos which has given me a much greater insight which has been great help at improving my game. Would you considering doing a video on basic decently rounded army compositions ? :)
What a killer move! Unfortunately the multiplayer right now are riddled with cheese tactics and lord sniping, i hope to see stuff like this in it soon! Thanks for the video man.
Hi ! I just suscribed, you seems to be the future Spirit of the law of Total war ;) I suggest you to also use stats to proove what you say, like for example, you try to prove it's better for an infantery unit to don't move when cavalry charge so you make different situation like you do but after you put some stats about losses and kills, that can help ;) Keep going !
Thank you! And that's a good idea. I'll keep that in mind. Usually I avoid that in the interest of time (i.e. length of the video), and do all of my testing and research off-screen.
Celt/Swed Tribe Chief Good thinking! Thanks for the suggestion. I did feel that the 3-way split-screen helped make my point crystal clear in that scenario.
Great, I've never tried it that way before. I sometimes find myself at a loss as to what to do with my handgunners after battle is joined as I can't always risk a flank to surround enemies and fire into their backs. Are you going to do a video on missile cavalry btw? I'm obsessed with Pistoliers even though they don't really do much damage - Though they're great for peeling off enemy units from their main blob and chasing down fleeing units to make sure they don't rally. Going to mod this myself soon I think - pistols should be armour piercing even if they don't do a lot of damage.
Yeah flanking from the outside like a pincer can be risky with ranged units, hence this version! Only works with some factions though. And I definitely will. Right now I have my 'hit-and-run' tactics video that touches on it, but there will be more!
Great generals don't shoot crossfire into their own troops. Luckily this is a game and it worked very well. I'll say you were a great second lieutenant for this video.
Haha. I lost about 3 dwarves to friendly fire, if memory serves me correctly. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, as their death allowed many of their brethren to live.
Hello PartyElite, once again a high quality video ! Could you give us advices on the same topic : how to position your missile units ? But with a focus on artillery ?
That would be great. I find artillery often not worth its cost in this game as it misses so much - I tried manually aiming my organ gun but it kept hitting the floor!
Thank you! And absolutely, I will be talking about artillery placements. If I had them in this battle, I'd actually place them further back, hit the enemy with a few volleys nice and early, and withdraw them to safety!
Great tactic. The rifle units in this game are amazing but I've had a hard time utilizing them after the melee begins, I usually just wheel them around the sides of the line and fire into the flanks or backs of the enemy, but that leaves them really vulnerable. I'll have to try this some time. I've heard friendly fire has been toned down a lot in this game, but do you notice if you get many friendly kills having ranged units shooting towards each other like that?
Thank you! Let me know how it goes. Friendly fire has been toned down significantly, and if I recall correctly, I lost only 3 dwarves to friendly fire in this battle. That's nothing, considering the death they would have faced had I not done this, and also considering the sheer number of bullets that were flying around!
On a hilly or forested map, I would probably apply a slightly different tactic. I'll be covering such situations as well! It's true that there are a lot variables on the battlefield.
Another good tactic would be to have dwarf irondrakes positioned at the bottom of a steep hill and then you use your slayers to drive the enemy towards the edge of the hill and then once they get there have your irondrakes BBQ them!
It definitely doesn't work in a bubble. But cavalry isn't the end of this tactic! Check out this video for a case where, while it wasn't pulled off perfectly, the cavalry was countered pretty well - th-cam.com/video/Ppj5gKTBMgY/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! I'm a very big history buff, yes. Have been since I was very young. Though some tactics I build based simply off the options available in the game. I find I have more fun in Total War games when I'm experimenting/trying interesting things, rather than a constant tried-and-true winning formula.
+PartyElite I see, I have typically gone for the tried and true balanced army composition in previous TW games, but your videos have inspired me to try to be more creative with my strategies. Keep up the good work! I love watching your videos!
holy crap im gonna try this with my pretty much doomed dorf army bein stuck in the underway about to get crushed by Archaon blob army and 1 Kholek... ill get back to tell the outcome!
well fnuk... killed 2 giants and the 33%hp Kholek and prickled Archaon a bit but got crunched ._. was quite outgunned and geared tho i will defo use this tactic in future again. When i have better units like longbeards and thunderers instead of regular warriors, miners and quarellers
hmm, so it appears my army of dorfs that was supposed to be crushed by Archaon because of being caught in the underway is still alive?? Is this a "dwarf only" thing in the campaign or did I miss something? I thought the underway was auto wipe out of whoever loses?
That's strange - unless I'm recalling incorrectly, your army should have been wiped! And yes this tactic is especially effective when you've got higher quality units on hand to deal out the damage quickly!
Do you stream or anything? It would be nice to catch you live-thinking some of this stuff out during a campaign or during multiplayer matches. Thanks for the very helpful videos!
I don't stream yet (bad internet speeds make me sad), though I might be soon! I also plan on doing a let's play that I'd release concurrently with these guide videos in the near future. Those would be unedited, so it would sort of be the same (?)
this is pretty awesome, but the AI in this sense is not that stupid, at least in WH2: when they outnumber you they tend to try to flank you, so your thunderers shooting into the kill box would be disrupted and decimated
surprised the enemy didn't flank your thunderers. AI usually goes to attack your rear missile troops with their extra units. and they had plenty in this battle.
There's a lot more maneuvering involved when flanking tactics and larger armies get involved. After all, a battle is all about adapting to evolving situations. I will be doing PVP videos as well, as soon as I get more of these out as a foundation! Right now I'm trying to put tricks up peoples' sleeves, so to speak!
If the cavalry is the target of the box, it can be really difficult because cavalry can close the gap very quickly, rendering your ranged units useless.
But you don't need to use just ranged units for the killbox. For example-make the front line thin and weak, allow enemy cavalry to plough right through it, hit it with a counter charge from both sides and go through the gap in front in something like reverse pincer maneuver.
The gameplay you use in your videos, is it against AI opponents or People? I find it hard to control 40+ units in a battle fighting multiple AI armies and have any semblance of order or fine tactical co-ordination. EDIT: On watching your vid I see it's AI, still the question remains do you think you'd be able to post videos of these tactics when fighting human opponents?
If you hold down shift, you can tap the right mouse button to set waypoints, or right click and drag to draw a path. This might help explain it visually - th-cam.com/video/TAzA9FmP76U/w-d-xo.html
I very much like your videos. But being as they are military in nature, you should know "Decimated" has a very specific meaning in this context, "A loss of every 10th man". It comes from an ancient roman practice of discipline that involved killing every 10th man. Using it to refer to the loss of 1 man in 10 is what being a great general is about!
Even though this is historically correct, almost every dictionary will have this as the second definition of 'to decimate'. The most common definition of 'to destroy a great number or proportion of' could therefore be considered to be the most correct usage of the term.
Well, it could be, by people ignorant of the meaning. I mean, I'm going to use it to mean one-tenth destroyed, and I assume anyone who uses it and doesn't mean one-tenth destroyed only knows the word from usage and not source. So, you know, YMMV.
Haha, I do know of the origins of the word "decimation". Roman military doctrine is one of my favourite historical topics. Though technically, wasn't it "decimatio" and "decimation" is just the Anglicisation of it? So I have an out - this time! =)
***** That's what I'm thinking! I'll be getting into faction-specific tips, and if this doesn't fit with VC, I'm sure there's plenty other things that will =).
I understand that this may be a viable strat, but it's a shame the A.I. is too stupid to try and flank around your units like at 1:34 they just charge into melee. the A.I. can't make the right decision as to what of your units have a higher killing power and that your guns are more deadly than a melee engagement with your infantry.
It annoys me how foolish the AI can be at times - I want to showcase the necessity of adapting to evolving situations, but at least this way I guess I can focus on one piece at a time!
True, that would help negate the charge bonus! The only reason I don't do it is because it makes the latter half harder to pull off, if my thunderers are further behind my main line to begin with.
+PartyElite The danger of the tactic you used is if the enemy just matches your units with 1-1 of his own and the get the rest to attack the thunderers from their flanks. Otherwise is a brilliant strategy, i would never have though it myself.
Dimitris Nitsios Thank you, and yes. Again - this is a desperate scenario, but I, primarily, like to arm my viewers with interesting ideas that not only work, but open up the possibilities. Thunderers would be able to hold off a little in case of a flanking maneuver, and I'd have to change the shape of my front for sure! Not an easy battle either way =)!
Not precisely, though the idea of surrounding your enemy and crossfiring into them is an age old practice. More often, it was done on the advance, as opposed to the retreat!
VS legendary difficulty the shit AI in TW WH would demolish you. The flanking debuff on your men and in general the AI's insane buffs will mean you will get eaten. So this really is not a good idea for difficulty setttings of hard and above. Vs a player..... you would die really fast, you would get flanked and your expensive units would get tied up. Good video, but put a tag of what level this type of thing works, cause for a lot of it it would just get your men killed.
For sure with larger battles and smarter enemies, there's a lot more adapting-on-the-fly necessary. Pivoting your troops, abandoning one tactic and shifting into another etc. I plan on covering such topics as well - right now I want to introduce people to the possibilities!
This kind of tactics is way too easy to pull off against AI. I remember several games where I had time to push ALL ranged units BEHIND the enemy blob that my infantry were holding back...quite fun to watch that killing spree in slowmotion >:) too bad the enemy break so fast.
Thank you! Curious (because it's all about making what you guys want to see) - how would you feel if I eventually got into a Let's Play, but always released 2 videos when they came out - 1 Let's Play + 1 Guide. Win/win?
***** Haha will keep that in mind. I take it you're a big fan of RTS games where recruiting one unit doesn't mean a literal single person is trained to fight?
I've pulled it off in a small section of a larger engagement, while distracting a human opponent on the 'other side of the field' so to speak. It can work, though it's definitely not a 100% success rate!
Jordan Ehdieb You say that but I think you'd often find human players who don't micro and don't have their infantry set to guard. They wouldn't be watching their unit trundle through the lines into the kill box as they blindly follow an attack order and chase. Moral is; if you don't use micro, set infantry to guard or they run out of control.
i like how he says out of the box thinking to describe a tactic which is literally a box
That was an insane tactic. sub
Thank you!
same
Thanks your videos are great. Having read a lot about ancient battles, I often get good ideas, but find them really hard to execute in TW games. These vids showing you executing classic moves are really help.
Glad to hear it!
Very nice tactics.
Thank you!

damn dude you make me feel so dumb, so many clever things ive never tried in years of playing this.
Just need to experiment, is all!
Well ranged units and cav in WTW are very flexible and user-friendly. Try doing this in M2TW though...
@@DzinkyDzink oh.. the horror!
Party Elite, I used to be such a Warhammer noob. Your videos have made a world of difference, and now I'm actually winning battles where I'm the underdog. Much thanks for the work kid. Keep it up.
Awesome! Glad to hear about the progress. And thanks!
So i have been playing total war series , since shogun 1.

out of the box thinking ahahaha
that was some grade A generalship though sir. well played
Thank you very much! And I can't resist a pun!
Hmm, I've been playing every faction like an Orc: 'there they are let's av it' sorta thing
Ah yes. "Hit 'em till they're dead" - a solid TW tactic. =)
Really nice video! You don't see many TH-camrs try to pull of more advanced tactics like this. Of course, many are more multiplayer focused, but some campaign tactics are a nice change anyway!

Thank you! And yeah I try to mix it up and give people ideas that they might pull out their sleeves, but may never have thought to do beforehand!
I just got here from the TW Facebook page. Great tactic, you've earned yourself a new subscriber!
Thank you! Welcome on board!
That engagement was pretty amazing tbh. Good stuff.
Just got through all the videos which has given me a much greater insight which has been great help at improving my game. Would you considering doing a video on basic decently rounded army compositions ? :)
Absolutely! I have plans for that already, so they're definitely coming up!
Extremely informative video, would love to see more tactics videos from you
Thank you! There's definitely a lot more coming!
I'm a bit of a total war veteran, even to me this video was incredibly interesting, thanks man!
Glad to hear it! Thanks!
Wow, been playing TW for years (Medieval2) and never saw this tactic before. Very nice! Thanks and subscribed.
Just plain brilliant. Subscribed.
Thanks =)!
This is a fantastic strategy!
Very nice strategy! Thanks a lot for sharing!
Thank you!
What a killer move! Unfortunately the multiplayer right now are riddled with cheese tactics and lord sniping, i hope to see stuff like this in it soon! Thanks for the video man.
Ugh, I hate cheese so much. I prefer grand-scale thinking!

Celt/Swed Tribe Chief Good thinking! Thanks for the suggestion. I did feel that the 3-way split-screen helped make my point crystal clear in that scenario.

WOW i never imagined this possible. Great tactic!! :)

Man I hate hearing "And thats what being a great general is about" because that means the clip is over :(

That was an awesome strategy. Props

Ahh that's totally worth it, I'm going to adopt this!
As a bloodbowl player it's nice to see the dwarfs still think in terms of boxes.
More tactics! Loving these
You got it!
That was a beautiful maneuver. I would of completely had fallen into that kill box.
This seems like it would be extremely tricky to pull off on a very hilly or heavily forested map.
On a hilly or forested map, I would probably apply a slightly different tactic. I'll be covering such situations as well! It's true that there are a lot variables on the battlefield.
That's one crafty tactic ! So simple yet so effective, and somehow never thought of it .. Thank You for the vids :D Sub!
And thank *you* for the sub!
Done this with Irondrakes aka Dwarfestator Squad.
Holy Sigmar it is lovely
Another good tactic would be to have dwarf irondrakes positioned at the bottom of a steep hill and then you use your slayers to drive the enemy towards the edge of the hill and then once they get there have your irondrakes BBQ them!
try it out against a balanced army with cav and missile units.
You sir are a great strategist. Subbed!
And I notice almost all your replies ended with a !.
Thank you! And they do! It's because I'm always yelling over the din of the battlefield! It's a bad habit - I need to stop.
+PartyElite
Loud: This man always yells over the heat of battles.
Personal aura of influence increased by 25%.
Out of the box in to the box thinking
=)!
I haven't watch all the videos yet. But hopefully a I'll see a tactic on castle siege.
Damn pretty slick. Subbed
Masterful.
Thanks!
How would Solid Snake use a kill box?
He'd drop it on the enemy's head, and then Fulton them back to Mother Base!
keep up the good work ! :)
Thank you!
Highly doubt it will work against enemy with a couple of cavalry units
Orcs tend to go pretty cavalry heavy
It definitely doesn't work in a bubble. But cavalry isn't the end of this tactic! Check out this video for a case where, while it wasn't pulled off perfectly, the cavalry was countered pretty well - th-cam.com/video/Ppj5gKTBMgY/w-d-xo.html

Thank you! I'm a very big history buff, yes. Have been since I was very young. Though some tactics I build based simply off the options available in the game. I find I have more fun in Total War games when I'm experimenting/trying interesting things, rather than a constant tried-and-true winning formula.

Will .Coplans Glad to hear it! And thanks! I do enjoy testing tactics - that's where the fun is for me!
holy crap im gonna try this with my pretty much doomed dorf army bein stuck in the underway about to get crushed by Archaon blob army and 1 Kholek... ill get back to tell the outcome!

How did he do the drag move at 1:32?
Alt, left-click and drag! check this out - th-cam.com/video/TAzA9FmP76U/w-d-xo.html
Whats the difference between putting missile infantry in square or in line?
Quite a bit! Check out this video of mine for some details about unit shapes - th-cam.com/video/3aGRzy_PzJQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks
Think you could do a hotkey video?
For sure! I've got these so far: 1) th-cam.com/video/TAzA9FmP76U/w-d-xo.html ; 2) th-cam.com/video/yC0Xc3ZNzBU/w-d-xo.html
Do these help?
Fantastic man, thanks.
surprised the enemy didn't flank your thunderers. AI usually goes to attack your rear missile troops with their extra units. and they had plenty in this battle.
I thought the same thing, while the idea of the tactic is sound. I'd like to see how it stacks up on larger armies and against Human opponents.

Blottingpaper It absolutely is! And that's why I'm going to be covering it too =)!
Nice!

Brilliant.
awesome channel. sub worthy indeed
Thank you very much!
that was great !!
a-fucking-mazing

"It just took some out-of-the-box thinking"
I think you meant "into-the-box thinking" ;)
possible to use this vs cavalry ?
If the cavalry is the target of the box, it can be really difficult because cavalry can close the gap very quickly, rendering your ranged units useless.

With your own cavalry of course ;)

Think out for the box to place your enemy into the box, a kill box 😂
The gameplay you use in your videos, is it against AI opponents or People? I find it hard to control 40+ units in a battle fighting multiple AI armies and have any semblance of order or fine tactical co-ordination. Ho CAn you give the orde that army Go arounds the enemy

Haha. Now there are two, and yet I am not distracted. I think you're onto something!

Too bad only the Empire and Dwarves have ranged units good enough for these kinds of tactics.
Each faction has it's own strengths and weaknesses. I intend to cover as many as possible!
jesus
I sub to your chanel, however I didn't like this tactic cuz It is useless in pvp. Am waiting for the advance/pvp guide.
Thanks for the sub! And there will most definitely be PVP and higher-level tips coming very soon!
This kind of tactics is way too easy to pull off against AI. I remember several games where I had time to push ALL ranged units BEHIND the enemy blob that my infantry were holding back...quite fun to watch that killing spree in slowmotion >:) too bad the enemy break so fast.
Sometimes, I wish the AI would be a little more challenging so I could show some more interesting back-and-forth in these videos!
Please don't expand into let's plays and all that shit. I subbed because of your guides.
Thank you! Curious (because it's all about making what you guys want to see) - how would you feel if I eventually got into a Let's Play, but always released 2 videos when they came out - 1 Let's Play + 1 Guide. Win/win?
PartyElite As long as it is Total War :)
***** Gotcha! =)
PartyElite I wouldn't mind if you played some Relic games as well. Such as Dawn of War or Company of Heroes :)
***** Haha will keep that in mind. I take it you're a big fan of RTS games where recruiting one unit doesn't mean a literal single person is trained to fight?
This...really doesn't look a "beginner's" guide anymore...
This would never work in multiplayer because a human would see it coming a mile off lol.
