Rockstar reuses old assets for GTA Online drip-feed content

- In the latest update to GTA Online (Los Santos Drug Wars The Final Dose) Rockstar added in 6 Dax missions along with 6 more as drip feed content. Now that we are finally able to play all 12 of these missions I was surprised to realize HALF of them are reused missions from GTA 5's story mode. These missions are 10 years old at this point and Rockstar Games thought it would be a good idea to make us wait weeks to dripfeed us the same old content we've played before. I've never seen such lazy game design from Rockstar since the GTA Trilogy remaster.

i think because rockstar kept milking gta 5 was for gta 6 to keep getting more money for development cause they make games in secret

the worst part was i was like "yeah finally i can land this plane"
but since the average gta online player can land about as well as a brain damaged hamster it starts a cutscene as soon as you get near the airfield
I don't understand why they didn't let us fly into the airplane by ourselves instead of a cutscene after hacking the door. I can understand the landing one tho and I believe it's because of the small trees or clutter around the airstrip which can break the plane's wing, making it impossible to land.
@@an_otherwanderer Landing that plane at the Sandy Shores Airfield is very easy there is nothing around to break the plane in any way if you just stay somewhat centered on the runway

I still firmly believe that Dax was originally supposed to be Trevor. Labrat likely would’ve been Wade, and Luchadora…well she would’ve likely been the same, likely as just some chick Trevor met thanks to Ron because of the troupe wrestling league.
dax looks like a almost perfect clone of someone i know except they dont carry around a RPG.
At least Wade is mentioned few times by Dax, so that gives us hope because he isn't dead
I 100% believe this was a Trevor DLC that was remixed quickly when Steven Ogg decided he hated Trevor. Ogg wants nothing to do with Trevor now.

It’s almost like it was originally a trevor dlc meant to have closure like Franklin’s dlc. With Trevor finally having the cargo plane go his way
It definitely was, that weird Cameo from a few months ago that Steven Ogg did seem to indicate that he found the writing dogshit and chose not to do it.
They probably made Trevor into a caricature of the caricature he already was. Bad writing in GTA Online, go figure. He dodged a bullet judging from what we got.
Well considering Steven Ogg seems to hate Trevor and GTA nowadays, it just wasn’t gonna happen sadly.
Maybe Friedlander just being there is hinting at a Michael cameo in Online, who knows.

@@ff_00_00 it's not even the first time this has happened though. Both CJ and Niko Bellic's voice actors refuse to be associated with Rockstar due to them falling out as well. Although that was more out of being paid less than they were promised for their roles.
Compared to the Criminal Enterprise update, Drug Wars feels like a Summer DLC made for those who haven't played the story mode.

I remember when I was a little kid I watched Inspector Gadget & other cartoons, I just assumed they would keep making them forever and I couldn't understand when they stopped coming on TV.
Then when I was a teenager I would listen to my favorite bands like Guns n Roses and Nirvana & I just thought they would keep making great albums forever and I waited and waited and new albums never came.
So, I can understand when people grew up with Rockstar and they made hit game after game & you expect that to never stop. But all the guys who started that company and made those games are all gone. They're retired or doing other projects. So, what we have now is all new people just with a Rockstar logo on it. It's like listening to a cover band trying to perform their songs.
It'll never be the same as their Golden Era, so we shouldn't expect the same quality & craftsmanship. It's just a different time.

@MmmScotty Sorry man. Life is full of disappointments. It's best just to prepare for them so you won't be let down. But remember, there are still talented & creative people in the world! There will be other great & fun experiences out there to enjoy, maybe you yourself has been inspired by Rockstar & will use that inspiration to make something to share with others that they will enjoy. Life is also about taking your experiences & sharing them with others.

Many of the players on GTA Online today have not bothered with the single player story mode and hop straight into the online, which makes perfect sense but also lets you know who Rockstar's target demographic is and it is definitely not who the game is rated for (the 18/17+ audience). We are slowly starting to become forgotten by these game devs.
On PC their target audience is apparently cheaters from China, because that's who is every server ruining it

They made these new characters because Steve Ogg gave up the Trevor character long ago (suggested by Ron's line about Trevor in the smuggler's run intro call). We still might see an update featuring Michael, but definitely not Trevor.

Thank you for pointing this out. Yes, Steve left from what I remember to move on to other things and left Trevor behind. I can’t blame him though, sometimes you just need or want to move on.
I don't know why Steven Ogg decided he wanted no part as Trevor. Trevor is the reason why Steven Ogg is even known now 😂😂 nobody knew who he was until GTA V at least enjoy the character that you brought you the most fame you ever had in your life
The sad part is the original mission was better. You can see it there, where the plane is rocking side to side and the jeeps are falling past you.

this thing happens in uncharted as well, small plane crash into big plane, cargo crates etc falling out. i feel like there is maybe one more game or movie that had this situation but i can't remember, do you?
@@teuth Uncharted never had a plane crash into a bigger plane (I haven't seen the movie so no comment).
In the game Nate sneaks onto the plane using it's landing gear as it's taking off. Gets caught by a guard and he tries to throw nate out the cargo door. Fist fight occurs and Nate pulls the parachute on a truck, causing it to fly back knocking the guard out of the plane.
Due to the truck and other cargo still being linked to the cargo rail system (to make sure it stays in place during the flight) it causes a lot of stress on the cargo hold, eventually ripping the plane in half.
God damn I would give anything to play that mission again for the first time

Ever since the doomsday heist they been using the storymode and 2013 gta online apartment interiors it makes the game feel less lively

The funniest part of the train mission being recycled to me is the fact that if you have context from single player the player is just casually stealing a nerve agent, it uses the exact same model from Monkey Business
I too believe this was originally supposed to be a Trevor update, but they had to change it because of how Steven Ogg has been acting recently when it comes to his role in GTA 5

@Grulaz my guess would have been to add a livery system to the plane would have been hard being a day 1 vehicle. But they've done it before, so it seems a waste of space and code to make another complete new vehicle. (Yes I know it's the same model I meant a new vehicle entity)
Edit: Gta wiki answers the differences being mainly an extra seat for lucha and minor changes.

You could also say that the "unstable substance" mission is copying the side mission where Michael/Trevor try weed and start shooting aliens and Clowns
I was thinking the same thing while doing the online mission. I just couldn't remember the name of it.
I do not have high hopes for GTA 6 at this point. All Rockstar's creative energy has been gone for years now.
Probably gonna be online only, full of bugs and glitches, pay 2 win and disappointed of how much potential it had.

Man, we thought Drug Wars was pathetic, & now we have the San Andreas Mercenaries. EVEN MORE missions are copy-pasted, hell, the very first mission of the DLC, like Drug Wars, is just the Insurgent setup for the Humane Labs Raid, ALL the way back in 2014! The difference is, now you have to spend actual money to play these copy-pasted missions, instead of getting them for free because NOW, you need a hangar, an avenger, a facility to hold the avenger, & the avenger needs at least the operations centre to start the missions. THIS IS BONKERS. How are we letting them get away with this?!?
I'm not gonna lie, reusing assets can be done extremely well and not feel cheap, but it has to be accompanied by new content, even if it's just visual. I personally love the idea of certain assets being reused, like imagine if Black Ops zombies let you play on full blown mp maps, things like that are what I'm talking about.
As someone who finished a whole play through of story mode before these missions came out I was very disappointed

Why were you disappointed? Recently finished story mode in the last 6 months or just complaining for the sake of it? The mission scenery was good and certainly felt nostalgic which wasn’t bad, plus the first time mission bonuses.

Steven Ogg doesn’t want to act as Trevor anymore so this was his replacement, I 100% believe it would be the exact same just with Trevor instead of Dax
Copy pasted content has been a long time thing, e.g, the auto shop is just a mirrored Benny's interior. Just seems in this DLC it was a lot less subtle. Like others are saying it's likely Trevor was originally planned for this.
I’m going to be honest, doing the Dax drug wars a remembered SOOO much just the day after it came out when I was playing it, i didn’t know why, but now I understand so much better why I somehow remembered this all, especially the plane part. You have ABSOLUTELY earned a sub, you answered so many of my questions I thought weren’t ever going to be answered

The first time I played the mission with dead man walking's interior I recognised the interior a lot but i couldn't find the window where michael jumps out of, but mission 5 i think we all knew it was minor turbulence
I'm trying to be optimistic. I think they're mainly focused on GTA6 now so instead of making some completely new missions they chose to kinda reuse some old ones. And given that most people playing GTA5 in 2023 might've never played story mode maybe they thought it wouldn't be a big deal.
I still believe that these new missions were supposed to be a Trevor DLC but why they ended up making a new character (and one of the most annoying ones at that) is still beyond me.
I mean, I want to agree with you and hope efforts have been mainly moved to GTA VI...but at the same time, Rockstar is known for putting minimal effort into things.

There is a theory that this DLC was originally made for Trevor. But Steven Ogg either refused to participate because of the bad writing, or he doesn't want to have anything to do with Trevor and GTA anymore (evident by the recent Cameo drama). Dax is just a knockoff Trevor and pretty much all of the missions reference something related to Trevor both in story mode and in online.
The only thing I could think about when playing that mission is how it had literally just copy and pasted minor turbulence
The WM29 pistol they added is also a modified Ceramic Pistol model
Missed your vids Gypsy glad your back, I’ve always thought minor turbulence was a throwback to stowaway in San Andreas you get on a cargo plane fighting in cargo bay then parachute out after it explodes this is getting out of hands with level of throwbacks and rehashing

Sad to see what has become of Rockstar. Used to love their games back then and thought they were one of the best video game publishers at the time and this is what they give to us for all the loyal support we’ve given them over the years but I guess you either die a hero or live long enough to become a lazy villain

I'm asking myself how much more the games engine can take. There are so many issues that weren't a thing back in 2013/14. For example that you have to walk away from objects and go back to them for the game to give you the prompt to press a button to interact with it. They should just release one last DLC where they fix a lot of the common bugs and glitches and then fully focus on GTA 6.

i think it's rockstars way of saying they miss Steven Ogg (trevor), the guy who stated he wants nothing to do with gta 5 anymore(probably due to the fact that people keep asking him non stop to be trevor on cameo way to often). i've been seeing his truck appear during acid sell missions as well. it's almost like it's their way saying they miss him, so they put in this mission? if im wrong it could be just lazy online dlc mission design.
This along with the other recent Rockstar disasters makes me extremely worried for gta 6

At this point I’m convinced that Rockstar is running out of ideas and should stop milking GTA online. They should really focus on GTA 6 now.
it makes me more and more worried about GTA 6, writing of dialogue in the missions is also catastrophicly bad. At best the ape everything of sigleplayer poorly like in franklin and lamar mission and it felt lame there too. What isnt mimicked is even worse
I miss the good storytelling so much, it hurts everytime I think about the wasted potential for story DLCs in the vein of TLAD and TBOGT.
The grinding, griefers and endless in game spam have their audience I'm sure but if they're going to be this lazy about online content you'd think they could have put at least some of the billions they made from the idiots who let R* rip them off with shark cards into some quality content that actually feels like GTA.

Every one experienced it back at release it was there for 2and a half years then there was online I dont think it's just 10%
For any update outside of free roam, I mainly look for the cars. For any free roam update, I'd love to see the new places to go and see what cars are out. When they released the Eudora, I was basically done with this update.
On one hand, it is a *free* update for a game that came out ten years ago.
On the other, Rockstar has made so damn much $$ on this IP they could have afforded to actually give us some new content. What we're seeing here is the steady wind down of online in prep for VI.

This was my exact thought when I was doing this mission yesterday, reminded me a lot of the Trevor mission….
Haven’t played gta online in like 4-5 years and I don’t plan to ever return.
This video just adds another reason as to why I’m not returning.
I have everything I need in the game and I’m sick of it but if you play the LTS or adversary game modes it’s pretty fun depending on what you play
I hope Gta 6 doesn’t fall victim to modern triple A trends. Like a battle pass or live service that seems to be ruining so many franchises. I just want a good single player story that rockstar always provides.

The beat at the start was used in everyday normal guy 2, for anyone else who's brain hurt.
When you see recurring stuff like this in brand new DLC or Updates, that's when the game's loooonnnng overstayed its welcome.
The base contract mission are the only enjoyable part of online play for me. They even hid missions on the mission list, some of them could only be found if you were near them in freeroam ie Crystal Maze 1-3

Trevor's VO actor Steven Ogg has ranted about game, he doesn't want to be type cast with Trevor or GTA. so they changed Trevor to Dax to be the main character so we are playing those missions because R* is greedy and lazy. its so obviously a cheap way to do these missions again. Also you have to note that there are millions of new players since 2013 that don't play the campaign and never will. its the old players that notice.

I remember playing the first mission of the first dose and thinking it was a really cool throwback, but then I played the other missions realising that they’re mostly just reused assets/animations/missions and I quickly found it very boring especially the singleplayer copies because I have played those missions enough times already
Dr. Friendlander's Pharma looks like a decompiled Half Life 2 map from 2007. You can see all the pre-baked AO in the corners, but the lighting is so uncannily FLAT.

I'm not surprised he left, he's a good writer and GTA Online is not a good format for storytelling. I wish they'd had him write a good story mode DLC or two somewhere in between all the GTAO garbage.

For old players this is a slap to the face dlc as we already played the single player. For new players this dlc is awesome cause they haven’t played single player or gotten far in it. Let’s be honest not many people play single player now and days, so rockstar is trying to appeal to those new players a lot more than old players

This is the worst December update we've gotten in a long time. Sure the acid business is a decent way to make some money if you're new, but everything else was just whatever. This is the least I've ever played GTA Online after a new update.
