I just absolutely love Tully Blanchard. He was such a great heel, so arrogant and damned great in the ring. Thanks for doing this extended interview.

I fucking love Tully. I pity the kids that came into the world late enough where all they know is the cartoony WWE shit and the attitude era. NOTHING compares to early 80's, Crockett promotions, NWA, the EARLY days of WCW, Mid-South, etc.

Dominic Bouchard By a mile too . He was the heat magnet of the group . People looked at Flair as a legitimate star , Ole and Arn were respected heels ..... Tully was the only heel that was always hated on a full time basis in every situation . The other 3 had fans , which is a sign of not quite being heel enough .... Not Tully .
Who underrates Tully? He may not have been the most likable guy among his colleagues/contemporaries but he is far from underrated. Tully fit his role as a horseman perfectly. Fans showed up at the matches, week after week, to see horseman Tully get his butt kicked, that was his role. If they were paying money to see him, they certainly aren't underrating him. He had a huge part in the horsemen's success.
The Babydoll story of her knocking out a Navy guy and then having him arrested was hilarious.
Finally! Been waiting for the full interview. Mad respect for Tully, one of the all time greats for sure!
I love the story that he tells about walking through O'Hare Airport and someone just shoots up the 4 fingers just so nonchalantly at Tully. Unbelievable the way that he describes it...it shows the Horsemen fan influences.
SNME was always aired before SNL. I used to tape it with my stepdad's VCR. I still have them and still works.
Tully's right about the Philly crowd. I grew up there & went to a few Civic Center shows as a kid and I remember a few fans cheering the Horsemen at shows. I was in that group of fans that respected them and thought they were great wrestlers but wanted to see Dusty/Magnum/The Road Warriors, etc. kick their asses. I badly wanted Animal & Hawk to get revenge on them after that time the Horsemen laid them out on TBS.
And I believe the Crockett era Horsemen combos were the greatest. The post-Crockett ones never really hit to me because Tully wasn't part of it..he was the missing component. He was just as important to the group as Ric and Arn.
That 85 I quit match is the greatest cage match of all times in my opinion.
I am about to watch it on this DVD I got.

When Tully came to Crockett his first feud was with Wahoo. I think Tully billed himself as not a legend killer but something like that
Tully had it all. He talked and dressed like Flair. Had the technical wrestling like Flair. But could also rough and tumble like the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. Substance abuse really hurt that. It's too bad, Tully had it all.
Still though, he had a long run considering

TUlly was such a great heel worker back in the day. I am also very impressed with his daughter Tessa Blanchard who IMHO had the best match in WWE Mae Young tournament against eventual winner Kairi Sane. I can't believe WWE passed on signing her.

For all sorts of reasons hate to disagree with a guy named Elvis. For the life of me I cannot understand why nobody ever gave Ted DiBiase a run as either NWA or UWF champ. Smoothness sadism science and a very impressive presentation the guy held all the cards. They rectified the Rick Steamboat oversight at last in 1990.B.W.

There's obviously more to the Blanchard story than we know or will ever know. He tiptoes around every possible controversial issue brought up involving himself or not and chooses each of his words verrrrry carefully.

Thank you Tully for a great interview. Notice how he forgets stuff about the business in general, but remembers Glass as an all American at Baylor with out skipping a beat, god changes you, it's like, look, that's in your past, focus on now and the future. I wish I can meet Tully some day.
At 55 minutes he explains how Crockett treated him it sounds just like every bad Boss I ever had.
When you think about it, Tully Blanchard is the Greatest Member of the Four Horsemen. Look at what they did and all they accomplished from the Summer of 1985 until the Fall of 1988. The list is so long, so accomplished, and so legendary, that it would take hours, and even days to write about. The Four Horsemen stable minus Tully Blanchard from 1989 until 1999, whatever the lineup is, is second rate at best. No chemistry, no longevity, no good story telling, and there were some awful members and combinations in those ten years. None of those members stacked up to Tully on what he could do in the ring wrestling wise, move for move, talent and skill, on the mic cutting those scathing promos, and getting true heel heat at it's finest!

Joltin' Joe Blanchard was a star in his own right .
Tully & Arn were my exposure to the NWA/WCW when they were the Brainbusters. At that time I had no idea there was another wrestling company and I asked my grandfather who was a Horsemen fan who they were and he told me to get up early on Saturday or Sunday mornings(can't remember) and watch TBS and it was all uphill from there.
Tully & Arn were The Brainbusters when they were in WWE from 1988-89. They were in The Horsemen in NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions from 1985-88. NWA/JCP became WCW in 1989 after Crockett sold the company to Ted Turner.

The apter mags would have all the territories in them,I grew up watching georgia championship wrestling as a kid they always showed matches from other regions. If I had never read thoes mags I would never have discovered other territories.Seems wwe and their arrogance conditioned some of their fans to believe they were the be all end all in wrestling, the mags were&still out there you just had to have read them.
The Prophet of Rage The Apter mags were great! They were the ultimate source of pre-Internet inside information. That's true about WWE and Vince, when you joined them, your previous work history ceased to exist.
Tully is 100% correct. I was a Dusty, Magnum and Road Warriors guy. However, I truly respected The Four Horsemen. Their ability was second to none. Their talking was second to none. Tully is so correct with that statement.

I was a Big fan of Tully Blanchard, "Your NWA Worlds Television Champion". Tully was the Best Heel of that era when he had Baby Doll on his arm-some of those promo's - "Tip Your Hat to a lady", "Baby Doll Slaps Back", "A Little Too Much Cleavage Today" Priceless....Seeing him fling Sam Houston out of the ring and whip him with the weight belt, the whole Dusty Rhodes feud when BD turned on Dream for Ric Flair and Tully jumped in with the chair,That Was Heat!

Hated the horseman as a kid, but respected the sling shot suplex for his finish move and him and Arn's tag team philosophy of cut the ring in half and dominate! F#@k they were great and I guess secretly I loved the flash and cocky attitude

followed his career entirely from magazines.. and tape trading... gino and tully as the dynamic duo were far better then arn and tully,,, ar and tully were good but never had the heat tully and gino had in sothwest.... not to mention the magnum i uit match.... it set the stage for many of the hard core stuff that came alog later... no other i quit match can touch that one

They always had to replace the 4th horseman, ole, lex, Barry. Could u imagine Flair Arn Tully, and Tully's old partner Gino Hernandez. Tully and Gino were so much alike and would have clicked especially as horsemen! Flair would have felt a little insecure to say the least!

I'l agree with Tully one one thing. Benoit and Pillman fantastic amazing talents both of whom have passed away Roma underrated put in a situation a spot where he was destined to fail, but it just wasn't the Horsemen.

They worked on opposite sides in Crockett for MidAtlantic about a year and a half before The Four Horsemen were officially formed. Flair was a tweener face and Blanchard was a consummate heel who teamed with Ric's classic MidAtlantic nemesis Wahoo McDaniel. "The Gruesome Twosome." Very early on in his career Blanchard even worked some dates about 1978 against Flair and his legendary partner Greg Valentine when they ruled The MidAtlantic and Tully was the undercard face! So it did actually happen.😂B.W.
Both Joe Blanchard and Fritz Von Erich were created in Stu Hart's Dungeon. At the Tragos\Thesz Hall Of Fame last year Tully told the crowd his dad used to tell the best dungeon stories. Wish we could hear some.
I guess we all must bow down in servitude to the late great Stu Hart for inventing pro wrestling and the modern world as we know it. Big deal Stu trained thoes guys, but he wasn't the only wrestling trainer the world had ever known.
