Back in my day, we did the "With no monsters left on the field, I summon Dark Magician. Declare direct Attack" before it was a meme -another japanese guy probably
Yeah, I really love the dark fantasy theme. All the monsters actually felt like scary monsters, and the game had a "forbidden" feel to it, like you were playing an ancient and dangerous demonic game or something. Favorite pack... I'm not sure. I'll probably have a better answer as I continue my history series and delve more into each pack.
@@chaosmagician438 Really, the early game was heavily inspired by Magic: The Gathering; the card game in the manga started out as essentially a lawyer-friendly copy, down to several cards being suspiciously similar.* And Magic owes a lot to D&D. Not to mention, Takahashi himself is a big fan of tabletop games, so it makes sense that a lot of early cards looked so similar to something you'd find in an old Monster Manual. * Look up the manga art for Battle Ox, Summoned Skull, and Blue-Eyes. Now look up the early MTG art for Hurloon Minotaur, Lord of the Pit, and Chromium. It's pretty striking.
Easy way to tell the difference between an original Vol.1 pack and a 20th anniversary set reprint, the 150 yen price tag on the top right! Damn all volume pack prices shot up recently to $150+ lowest ones I’ve seen are vol.5 and 6 for $80 on eBay, got a sealed vol.2 pack(because Joey/Jonouchi is my favorite character) a year ago for $50!
@@StrawhatDawn Yes, new ones don't have the set code still (example : LOB-000) but they did add the eye of anubis hologram at the bottom right of the card
"All this new Yugioh is dumb because it's too fast, back in my day we had Kurama Beatdown and we loved it"
-Some japanese guy, probably.

The charm of the older artwork is that it reminds me of mystical fantasy, also what's your favorite pack?

Old cards really looked the darkest. New ones are a mix of waifus, robots, and space dragons. It's not just boomer talk. The style really has shifted.

Man this hits the nostalgia factor haha, exactly like in the anime and the artwork. Very cool video !
Really nice opening man!
If you did open an original OCG booster pack this long after they were released, I'm sure you would hear the screams of hardcore collectors 😂

What about the actual cards themselves ? Is there a way to differentiate between the new and old ?

Yo, where does one get stuff like this? It's awesome to see and I may want to pick them up for a certain project I'm working on.
I use Buyee to buy from Japanese Mercari. You have to check every day to find cool stuff. I have a lot more OCG stuff which I plan to show off soon.
