Are you guys ready to get deep into the nitty gritty of operatic technique? I sure hope so! I may come across as overly detailed in my commentary during some parts of this video, but this is merely to point out the minor differences between a singer like Dimash, who has mastered many styles of singing, and a singer who has dedicated all their training to opera. Also to point out the difference in expectations between an operatic tenor in their prime, and Placido, one of the greatest operatic tenors in history who has simply passed his prime as a singer. In this video, I hold Placido and Dimash to a high standard because they’re performing traditional operatic repertoire, but I continually acknowledge the conditions: Last-minute preparation, Placido being in his 80s, Dimash not strictly being an opera singer, and all the rest. You all surely know by now that I believe Dimash to be one of the greatest singers alive. I have so much admiration for both of them, so try to view this more as a music lesson than anything else - that’s always how I intend my videos to be received. Much love to these singers and to all of you for the support!

Happy that you did this analysis ❤😊 And thank you for the warning! 😅
You might still get criticism for criticizing Dimash and Domingo (If that’s what will happen. 😂)
I might even join the mob myself. 😜 Even if I will also be grateful for your explanations! ❤😘
Such things happen, when the overwhelming love for Dimash clashes with the love for learning and the love for your channel.😅😉

Thanks for the honest warning, Peter. Placido Domingo is 83-years-old and Dimash isn't an opera singer; neither of them should be held to the same standard of, say, Vittorio Grigolo or Jonas Kaufmann. For those wanting professional reactions to this performance, I'd suggest Niall Morris (Bangkok Vocal Coach), the Grammy-nominated opera tenor, who has performed the same role as Dimash is singing here, dozens of times in concert halls around the world. I'm going to skip this one, Peter, but I'll see you on the next one.

I'm looking forward to your reaction, but it sounds like you will be in hot water. I do think your approach is too rigid. A normal opera singer would have practiced this song since they were in school and practiced it for weeks before the show. Placido and Dimash had one day to prepare for it since Placido suggested to Dimash that they would sing something together when they met as judges in a talent contest. Placido has sung it thousand times but he is 83 years old now. Dimash does not sing opera but classical crossover. Dimash keeps the same approach, using whatever techniques he sees appropriate to sing the song while still respecting its roots. Why would you hold them to a very high standard of professional operatic singing?

@@Snarky_Tart I agree with your comment 100%! I am actually surprised Peter decided to react to this duet. Placido’s voice was sublime in his prime, and Dimash is not an opera singer, as you stated. I enjoy the duet for the harmonies both of them created and the beauty of Dimash’s voice.

@@christine4109 Hi Christine, it's probably best not to assume exactly what I say in a 45-minute analysis before listening to it. I am extremely respectful to all the conditions that came along with this performance: the last-minute preparation, Placido being past his prime as a singer, Dimash not strictly being an opera singer, all of it. If listeners take a second before having a knee-jerk reaction to my commentary, it will come across as reasonable, thoughtful, and insightful. If listeners blow up with anger the moment I say Dimash's operatic technique isn't perfect, then I'm sorry for those people, for they are missing out on some very interesting and varying opinions in life.

Knowing what a perfectionist Dimash is, his "soons" often last almost a year, singing with Domingo completely unprepared must have been a big challenge for him. He hadn't sung arias since he graduated from college at nineteen, and he might never have sung this duet, but how could he say no to a dream come true. And so, despite all the obstacles they had to overcome, they did wonderfully. Thank you for the competent analysis, Peter❤😊

One day of rehearsal, I consider this a beautiful performance and I tend to consider myself an opera snob. I shared this with my mother, who isn’t a fan of Dimash’s high range, she would prefer him to stay in this range, and she’s definitely an opera snob, having been offered a full scholarship to Juilliard . She said that this was beautiful, which absolutely stunned me, of course I agree. Considering this entire situation occurred because Maestro Domingo had invited Dimash to participate and he wanted to sing with Dimash, to me this is the greatest compliment.

But at this point, realizing how many people are impacted, by fantastic opera singers, vocal coaches and standard listeners, while I would like to have the commonality with my mother on this, I don’t need her approval or justification. Dimash’s voice and vocal skills impressed Placido Domingo, if that’s not enough, I feel like people simply want to be negative or argumentative.

I think you may have belabored the point, and I think even you were uncomfortable. While I understand your love of Opera, and the technical knowledge, but these were 2 men who greatly admire each other, and it was truly an honor for both of them. I think I would have enjoyed your critique more, without all the repetitive emphasis on their imperfect vowels, pronunciation, and breathing. Granted that this was not a perfect opera performance one has to understand that both men went in knowing this fact. One day is not enough for preparation. However this opportunity of Dimash singing with one of his idols was grabbed and they informally performed in a friendly environment just for the moment in History. Later this was shared with Dimash’s Dears who quickly brought this piece to 1 million views. We just loved it and admired the bravery and the collaboration. The sound was great to us and as usually we don’t really care about the language Dimash sings in.

I think Domingo is brave to sing this with a young man with a voice like Dimash and it's humbling to see how Dimash manages to sing with a man decades older than he is, with a voice long past its prime, without overwhelming him, but supporting and allowing dignified space to his idol. The setting of this pairing is that both Placido and Dimash are judges of this TV competition show for young classical musicians in Hungary ( Virtuosos 4+); and at their first meeting before filming of the show Placido asked Dimash to sing with him because his grandson had shown him videos of DImash performing. th-cam.com/video/T2qFE3aIP1Q/w-d-xo.html It is also true that Dimish was sick in the weeks leading up to this duet which is why they only had one day to rehearse together. th-cam.com/video/nr1iY7rRQ7E/w-d-xo.html So Dimish had less than one week to learn the music and lyrics and just one day to rehearse and practice while coming back to form from a cold. The only audience to this performance were the TV cameras and the other judges sitting in the houses sweet spot about 5 rows back from the stage the microphones where for the TV production while the singers knowing that the audience was only 5 rows back added more intimacy to the performance than had there been a full house to perform too. When he met Dimash he was very excited and he was the one who suggested a duet between them. Dimash was happy because Placido was one of is idols. This is a dream come true to Dimash. Hi, Peter!
I ignore the Dimash's pronunciation because I recognize the enormous differences between his native language and French (previously he has only sung SOS in that language), in addition to the minimal time they had to prepare this presentation. Domingo was in his "comfort zone", Dimash was not, and yet he did it musically excellent!
Si, in my opinion, Dimash remains the best singer and performer of our time!

Placido is director and conductor of the "Virtuosos" program in Budapest, and Dimash was invited by him to be part of the jury that encourages children and young artists. Those you saw are judges on this program, just like Dimash. And, yes, Dimash was recovering from the flu, in the video of their meeting Dimash was coughing and as Placido spoke he respectfully walked away.
The meeting between them was hilarious, Placido was so excited about Dimash that he didn't give him time to speak and immediately invited him to do this duet.
What matters to us is not the technique and correctness of the words in French but the meeting of two giants, two souls in love with music and the feeling that unites them. For us it was a great and wonderful event. and with all respect and admiration for Mr. Placido a living legend of opera.

I love Dimash and have followed him since his debut in “singers”. I love classical songs and opera arias also. Your honest analysis as an opera singer is appreciated. Dimash is a big boy, I am sure he will appreciate it, too. Opera is not his genre, he sings classical crossovers, he creates his own genre. It takes many years of training after a degree in college to develop the resonance and operatic techniques in the voice to sing over an orchestra, to project the voice over the entire hall. Once the technique is on auto pilot, then comes the interpretation. I love to Watch Didonato’s master class for the way she taught talented young singers to express the lyrics. The reason they both keep looking down is reading the lyrics from the monitor since they decided to sing this aria one day before.

The beautiful and very VALUABLE thing about this performance is that; 1st, French is not his first language; 2nd, he had ONE day to learn it Because he was not going to lose this opportunity to sing with one of his inspirations. So, I guess many singers would have turned down this magnificent opportunity out of fear, but not Dimash! He is very determined to do and solve any issue or challenge that presents his way. He has done it a LOT! (for his concerts, shows, competitions) Like Chinese, English, Spanish, Armenian, French, etc, etc So, a "problem" with pronunciation, IS NEVER GOING TO STOP HIM from achieving whatever he wants. And that is what DIFFERENTIATES him from the REST of the common singers. I think this was, as always, a wonderful performance. He has my COMPLETE respect 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 If you truly appreciate music, you can FEEL the emotions through their voices no matter the language😉

Many bel canto teachers have verified that Dimash brings a cross interpretation between rigid classical singing (which must follow norms and exactly as the author of the piece wrote, from the notes and durations, the portamentos, the expressiveness... Everything) and much more popular flexibility. For purists, let's remember that Dimash had the dream of singing with Plácido Domingos since he was a child and it was the Maestro himself, Don Domingos, who suggested the duet (he knew that even with classical training, Dimash would sing as a cross between classical and pop )! Dimash only had one day to remember the work and make the recording, as this moment is part of the competition (like a talent show) for children with musical talent: The “Virtuosos”! Dimash, as well as Placido Domingos, were part of the Jury, accompanied by Erika Miklósa (opera singer), Adrás Keller (violinist, conductor and musical director of the Budapest Concert), Hauser (cellist), Plácido Domingos Jr. (singer and composer), Pablo Sanz Villegas (classical guitarist), Gabriela Rachid (cultural director) and Harvey Goldsmith (music promoter)! The show was in Budapest (Hungary) from January 16th to 26th this year, 2024!

Interpretaron "Heal the World".
    7. Paz y amor para todos. 💖💝🌸🌼⚘️💫✨️🇨🇱

This was certainly a very detailed reaction and taught us a lot about the operatic style of singing. But having said that, I do feel that sometimes there's a bigger art in critiquing a performance when looking at it in the whole and seeing it for what it is. This performance would certainly fall into such a category, especially since it was a long time dream of Dimash to sing a duet with Domingo, where clearly now, they are at completely different levels singing wise taking into consideration their age difference. This was simply a unique moment in time where 2 great singers joined together at short notice, and to critique it to such an extent where we all clearly know neither of them fits the operatic mould currently, was maybe not quite the right approach, even though it is what you specialise in. I think Domingo of all people, will be very aware of the shortcomings of his performance in this duet (if you insist), and certainly Dimash as well! This performance should be enjoyed as a moment where 2 great singers show their admiration, acknowledgement and respect for each other! 👏👏

This was not an opera competition. Maestro Domingo and Dimash were part of a panel of judges that heard young classical virtuosos from Eastern Europe. The judges you see range from Hauser, a cellist, to Placido Domingo Jr. and a number of other classical specialists. This was a special concert done by the Maestro and Dimash. Dimash did have a cough the day of the performance, yet he still sounds brilliant. It is a testament to the greatness of these two men that this is one of the warmest and most widely watched version of this duet. Couple of things to keep in mind: Dimash was "invited" to be a judge at the Virtuosos 2023 competition in Hungary by one of the events' shareholders, Maestro Placido Domingo. Also, Maestro "invited" Dimash to sing an operatic duet with him at this widely advertised and televised competition. I would think Maestro wouldn't have suggested an operatic duet if he felt Dimash wouldn't be able to do a decent (not perfect) job. Thank you for your honest and educated opinion!!! Dimash indeed had only one day prep and was coughing that same day (there is footage of it), however, I find him also trying to be respectful with Plácido and not overshadow him. Also as you said, he has what is needed for opera and still young. But we love to see all his colors and for sure the coming years will show all of them. Long life to Dimash!!!

I came in here fully expecting you to tear him apart and I wasn't disappointed. You really ripped him to shreds. lol. It was really exciting for Dimash to be asked to duet with Domingo and was not going to say no, even if it wasn't perfect. I don't know about flu, but he was definitely chest coughing on the video the day before. I thought it was a great performance anyway.

it's a treat to watch the maestro placido domingo still performing in his 80s, when other opera singers much younger than he is are no longer doing so. it's also a positive thing to see the maestro still active on a professional level, as artist and mentor, belying all notions of ageism. after all, he really doesn't need to, having performed 151 different roles onstage, recorded more than 100 complete operas, received all the highest possible accolades that can be given a world-class tenor while conducting orchestras and even becoming an opera company artistic director. heck, owning a private jet and having a net worth of US$300-M would make a lesser person just vegetate into a life of leisure. so it's inspiring to see the maestro collaborate with younger artists like dimash qudaibergen even for just one song.

Dimash is in competition since a very young age so Dimash can handle constructive criticism. Probably he would’ve been an incredible tenor/ counter tenor opera singer but I’m glad he didn’t pursue that route but included his opera training to his music in result he created something different and exciting in music industry.

So this is not an operatic singing competition. It’s actually a symphony instrument competition. The part I featured 2 pianists, an oboist and a violinist all competing for grand prize. Placido and Dimash are judges that sit at the long table. They are not being judged here. They just took the opportunity of them being in the same place to perform together. There’s another video you might be interested in, if you haven’t already discovered it, where Dimash meets Andrea Bocelli and they perform a little Besame Mucho in Bocelli’s dressing room, which has a piano. No microphone or amplification, just pure power by Dimash. It feels like the paint would start peeling from the wall had it lasted longer.

Thank you for your critique, and I get where you're coming from. I also agree that if they had even 2-3 more rehearsals to clean up the lyrics and the timing, they would have smashed this. It's clear that Dimash is not solely an opera singer, and it shows here. However, I am grateful that Dimash chose *not* to develop as an opera singer. Once you choose the opera route, you can't do much else. I remember in the early 1980s, Placido did a duet ballad with John Denver ("Perhaps Love"). Everybody raved how beautiful it was, but vocally it was a disaster. Placido couldn't let go of the spin and John Denver couldn't spin to save his life, so they clashed mightily. So for Dimash, it's better to give up on pure opera so that he can retain his purer crossover sound. We need him in crossover!

I agree. It's unrealistic to expect Dimash to be able to pull off Jussi Bjorling and also sing something like his latest MV "When I've Got You". If he stimulates people into listening to a wider range of music than they usually do that's an achievement.

The Virtuoso competition in Budapest was for young classical instrumentalists from Eastern Europe. You were right to say that it was a kind of guest performance, but it was for the judges, including Placido’s son and rebel Hauser, the cellist, Harvey Goldsmith etc, as well as Dimash and Placido Domingo themselves.

I totally appreciate his unbelievable talent and I believe that had he had enough time to prepare this would have been great. It does sound very nice, it's a lovely duet and I think he and Placido sound good together.
I am an opera buff and as such, I have loved Placido for years. I know, he's not what he was, but I am floored by how good he still sounds. When I saw this come up on TH-cam I almost didn't watch because I was afraid that Placido would sound awful and I didn't want that to be my last memory of him. I was so relieved. He

A final note: I listen to the Met broadcasts and I have heard a few baritones who should wish they sound as good as Placido at 82.

👉 The world stands still for this moment and everyone holds their breath. A singing teacher calls them the two musical titans...yes, yes, yes! This duet was Dimash's dream and it is coming true. What an honor for our beloved Dimash and a great joy for Maestro Domingo…. And I was bathed in tears of joy. I'm sooo happy.
Dimash was asked to participate as a judge in the competition for young classical musicians... and then... he gave us dear ones this wonderful jewel.
Maestro Domingo invited Dimash to sing the duet with him the day before. Dimash only had a short night to learn this song in French... and besides, Dimash had a cold with a cough. (You notice it more clearly in the second song at the end of the concert.)
Dimash would never act recklessly towards his duet partners. With good manners and respect, he would never drown out Maestro Domingo (then still 82) with his voice. He even adapts to Maestro Domingo's vocal color.
Dimash opens a new world to many Dears... the world of classical music. You should definitely watch the video (look at the end of the comment)... so many young, talented musicians and the sensitive assessment of the jurors... Great!!! ... and the legendary duet of Maestro Domingo and Dimash Qudaibergen!

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching it. It was very interesting to hear someone who knows opera critique Dimash's singing in this context. I don't really know much about music at all, so I rely on those who do to let me know how well Dimash sings. I think you were very fair in this. Dimash hasn't spent his recent time working on opera so of course he wouldn't be as good at it as someone who has. It was really nice to hear that you think he would be on Placido Domingo's level if he devoted himself to opera! And it was equally nice to hear that you think it would have been a waste of his abilities to have done so. Placido's grandson brought Dimash to his attention and he was delighted to meet him, and Dimash, of course, has looked up to Placido his whole life. Placido said, "We have to sing together!" and I'm sure it was a dream come true for Dimash! One of the few benefits of knowing so little about proper singing is that I can really enjoy this duet without noticing the flaws! 😆 I think the idea that Dimash had been sick may have come from the fact that he was coughing a bit during the video of he and Placido meeting. Thanks again! 🇨🇦

I really respect your absolute straightness and honesty regarding this performance. It was so interesting to hear all the little things that could be done better by Dimash when singing opera. I would never have known all the little tricks and techniques that need to be done without you explaining them. As for singing in French, he's never been very good at French pronunciation and actually I don't think he has improved that much over the last few years. He still sings SOS D'un Terrien en Detresse, and although he does now leave the 's' off at the end of the words like vis and ris he continues to sing the vowels incorrectly and the wrong lyrics, replacing several different phrases with the same phrase which makes a nonsense of the meaning, but hey, we are Dears and we love him and we honestly don't care. I just want to be proud of him when (particular) French people hear him, and I can't be. Maybe it'll come in time, maybe it won't. I'm so glad he didn't become an opera singer. I don't think many of us would ever have found out about him if he had. It would have been a huge waste of his incredible singing talents. Now look what we have - we have a man who touches so many hearts all around the world who has this amazing versatility and skill in multiple genres of music, plus boundless creativity, curiosity and humanity. There is no box to put him in. He simply soars. We are so lucky to be alive while this man is on the earth.

Because of the pronunciation of both I thought it was in Italian 😂🤭Not knowing that he was French, I found the performance incredibly beautiful, but I don't know anything about opera, I only entered that world recently thanks to Dimash. I saw a video a few days before this presentation where Dimash appears coughing, when Placido meets Dimash and tells him we should make a duet, but my voice is no longer the same, let's rehearse tomorrow... so I think this was a little bit time. But I loved Dimash's presence and his impeccable voice for me, without knowing French, obviously.
