Liberation is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera. The album was released on June 15, 2018, through RCA Records.[3][4] It is Aguilera's first album in six years, following Lotus (2012). The singer started recording the album in late 2014, and throughout 2015 and 2017, Aguilera collaborated with a handful of producers and songwriters to reach her desired sound; Pharrell Williams and Linda Perry were in the studio in early stages and ended up not being on the album, while new collaborators such as Anderson Paak, Kanye West, Che Pope, Mike Dean and Tayla Parx were confirmed to be on the album. It features collaborations with Demi Lovato, Keida, Shenseea, GoldLink, Ty Dolla Sign, 2 Chainz, and XNDA.
Liberation was preceded by the singles "Accelerate", "Fall in Line" and "Like I Do" and the promotional single, "Twice". Critical reception towards the album was generally positive, with music critics complimenting Aguilera's vocals, the album's experimental styles, and the cohesive sound. Commercially, it positioned within the top ten in eight countries, including the United States, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. The album's second single "Fall in Line" and third single "Like I Do" featuring GoldLink, earned nominations for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 61st Grammy Awards, respectively. To promote the album, Aguilera embarked on her fifth concert tour, the Liberation Tour, beginning in September 2018. It is her first tour in nearly ten years after the Back to Basics Tour. - บันเทิง

Liberation was never intended to be an album to return to pop-radio or pop-stardom, it was meant to be a relaunch-pad for Christina Aguilera -- the artist -- who went messing for the pass 8 years (2010-2018).
This is why I urge you to watch the "Liberation Tour", and not the XPERIENCE. This album makes sense live. Deserve makes sense. Maria makes sense. The cohesiveness takes presence. I'm thoroughly pleased with @xtina's "Liberation" album, because I don't have any "expectations" for her because shes so damn experimental. As a fighter, one of the best things to hope whenever a new album is on the horizon is "what genre will she play with next??" It's exciting AF.
In the beginning, during the "Liberation (intro)", the sound of a child is heard --- you commented it was her children. However, that child's voice running....is meant to be Maria (the little girl whose passion was music), i.e., herself. She's running, chasing after herself, her passion, her reason of becoming an artist in the first place.
In 2011, Christina joined "The Voice" to be a passionate artist, but instead of building her craft, it sucked away her passion. That's what "Sick of Sittin'" made reference to (Get it, the Voice Chairs? LOL). She was tired of wasted energy, and after her 6th stint, she said she needed to be an artist again.
For me, Liberation is a masterpiece. It's not a bop. It's not a pop-album, and it's not trying to be. It is what it is. A Christina Aguilera album. An album, like her, which is "in a league of its own".

Ik this is 2 years later but omg I completely agree. Liberation is pure art and Lotta fighters don't like it because they expected her to become the pop star again and chart which liberation isn't that. This album is in the top 3 for me along with stripped and b2b

This is her most critically acclaimed album to date surpassing the reviews from stripped and back to basics. Even though she didn’t chart she did get two Grammy noms from this album, first noms for her independent projects since back to basics. Truly one of my favorites.

Unpopular opinion, but I think this is her best album. It has the perfect length, the theme is consistent through all the record, variety of genres but still a cohesive sound, fun uptempo songs with great production (Kanye and Anderson .Paak involved) and great vulnerable ballads, soft vocals and powerful ones. It's not a perfect album tho, she can do so much better but this was a huge improvement from Lotus. I would take out Masochist, for me it's the one who doesn't fit and some interludes could have been replaced with more hip-hop tracks instead. Also i think you are not going to like it that much :v

Masochist was the only song I liked when I first heard the album, Maria was one of my least favorites but when I attended to The X Tour and she sang it, it started yo grow on me and now I like it.
Accelerate I didn't like it nor the video I was like WTF is this? Is this really your comeback after 6 years of no albums? I just liked 2Chainz verse, but then it started to grow on me, but I'd prefer if Ty Dolla Sign wasn't on there, he makes the chorus annoying
Fall In Line was a little disappointing cuz I heard the leaked demo (I know that was bad, but I didn't seek for it, it appeared on my twitter feedback and the temptation to listen to it won me) and I prefer that version honestly, but it's good and is my favorite of the album although the demo is better
Twice I liked the first time I listened to it, but then it got me bored
Like I Do was a little long to me, GoldLink should've had another solo and cut the song, but the beat is great sound so expensive, the song is underrated tho, even got a nomination to the grammys but seems nobody not even Christina appreciate it the way it deserves
Carlos Martínez my favorites from the beginning were and still are Accelerate, Like I Do and Pipe, always wanted a heavy hip-hop influenced song from Christina and here we have three ✨
@@RanchoViejoo In Mexico we didn't have the chance to watch her perform twice, instead she performed her iconic spanish songs so I'm not complaining. Masochist would be perfect to me if the instrumentals were a little high cuz It were shadowed by her vocals and it's a shame because they sound good.
My least favorite I think is Sick of Sitting I didn't even like it when she sang it at the concert
Seems to me like you like liberation best because you think its "cohesive". Unpopular opinion but just because an album is cohesive it doesn't mean its great. I like that Stripped & Bionic are all over the place because it shows versatility. Ive always thought people give too much importance to cohesion and flow of album, those things don't matter to me. I rate tracks individually and then the album as a whole based on all tracks. Also I love long albums. The more tracks the better, specially fitting for someone like Christina who takes too damn long of breaks between albums.

I think the reason you didn’t fully love this album is part of the reason why xtina has struggled to find top success.
She’s a fan of music and never ties herself to one genre because she loves it all. Because her albums are so eclectic in terms of genres, she appeals to a lot of people but for different reasons. Just because one xtina album doesn’t mean you’ll love everything on the next but you always see why it’s great music but maybe not just for you.

Two years ago I remember listening to this album for the first time uninterrupted and the intros + Maria left me floored. Then Twice and the closing track had me tearing up. I had zero expectations coming in and had zero idea what it’d sound like since Xtina always switches it up. It deserved more than two Grammy noms

It's a fair review. Because Xtina dabbles in so many different genres, the result is that she ended up creating pockets of fans that gravitate towards certain styles. RE: to Sal's not liking Deserve and Like I Do- it's not his style, fair enough 🤷🏻♂️ he's not into experimental Xtina and that's ok lol
This is true.. only Xtina would release Dirrty and then Beautiful, Not Myself Tonight and then You Lost Me, Accelerate and then Twice... it can be jarring for the casual fan that either prefers her bops or ballads 🤣 but this just shows there are many sides to her

Totally understand hip pop is not your favorite type of music. Me too! Christina just kept trying different things and didn’t play safe. I do feel the quality and production of Liberation is great. First of all, thank you for all your Xtina's videos. It was a fabulous journey. I have been a fan of Christina since Genie in the Bottle. I was 14 years old then, so I have been growing up with her and her music. I think that's the reason why you don't feel connected to most of the Liberation's songs. As you said, it is a more adult sound. Although I think her best album is Back to Basics, I love Liberation personally because it talks to me on a deeper level. Before the album, I was in an inner search of myself, asking why I make those choices or what had happened to me. When I became this guy? Then Christina answers me, and all made sense. I don't want to sound romantic, but Xtina saves my life again and again. And she knows how to cheer you up definitely.

Accelerate takes MANY listens to appreciate. I hated it the first time I listened to it. After about 10 times, I really started to like it and now it's one of my favorites. Partly because of how unique it is to anything else I've heard before. Kind of like a hip hop version of the Bionic intro to me.
I'll let you know how I feel after a few more re-listens.

Liberation is, like you said, a very hip hop and kinda rap album so for many this is not that fun, but for sure you just play it again and go with the songs you discover they are really good. I did that and i loved the whole concept of the album, must agree though, the beat seems to be everything and each song clearly could have allowed more creative and instrumental building for better sound and more positive impact. Its a very mature album and lets hope Christina give us soon a fun record like stripped, back to basics or even bionic which were more fun than liberation.

First off, just wanted to say I appreciate your honesty. Some people are so fake on the internet but your authenticity is everything.
Second, as a classical singing fan I was really out of my comfort zone with what I expected this album to be vs what it was. I think what a lot of people fail to grasp is loving the album for what it is. I wasn’t so sure after one listen, but after I thought about it for a while, I returned and LOVED it.
The whole album is a push out of the comfort zone and liberating yourself from your musical constraints. Sometimes it just takes a while for the music to hit just right, but it finds that groove man it sticks.

This is might be her less poppy album. I still love Stripped, B2B, and Bionic the most. But I think it's good. You need to watch her live performance of Twice. There's one that's incredibly good, so you are gonna have to hunt down for that one specifically. I think the fan favorite is the "LIVE in L.A. 2018-10-26" one.

I'm not a big fan of the hip-hop and trap elements either, but the ballads / mid-tempos are amazing. Fall in Line has really powerful lyrics, Twice is one of the most gorgeous songs I ever heard, Unless It's with You is gorgeous as well and I love her vocals in that song, Masochist and Deserves are really beautiful mellow songs with really interesting lyrics, and Maria is also a huge highlight for me because of the meaning behind it and the lyrics.

This album is very R&B, to be honest a lot these tracks sounded better live than on the album. Like deserve and twice and search for Maria. So I loved it. Lotus was a mess. I felt she really took her time with Liberation ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@SalRocha yes they do something about her band and her energy live but I think that’s with a lot artist things just sound better live. Even going back to the back to basic intro on the album sounds good. But when u hear it live and the drums and other instruments and the back up singers just makes it that much better.
Right Moves is so catchy! The three voices work so well together and the song is just fun to listen to, very tongue in cheek. It's almost like the Woohoo of this album! Haha

I called it as a Stripped Part 2 cuz it has the same vibes in real pop sound like.. but Liberation has more hip hop element to it that makes it sounds more fresh, less angry & less hurtfelt than Stripped... My second most fav Xtina album after Stripped, for sure.. 😘

Sick of sitting is about "The Voice" that she's so over the whole TV shows thing, Christina was told to be focus a lot of things such as clothing, hair, makeup instead of her music or voice, that's why it happened

It makes sense that you wouldn’t like this album if you are not a fan of the hip hop genre. That’s the thing with Christina and her albums like Back to Basics and Bionic - she goes in polar opposite directions all the time. Not everybody is going to enjoy the jazz-orientated album and the futuristic electronic one AND the hip-hop-inspired one since they are all inspired by different sounds. For me, I really liked her direction with this album. I do listen to a lot of R&B/hip hop so I really enjoyed that she went in this direction. I like how in comparison to Lotus, the only song that sounds close to mainstream pop music is Deserve, which is nice that she didn’t fall into what some may expect her to do as a pop artist. I like how she conveyed a theme of soul searching and longing for freedom and then celebrated that freedom with the form of the hip hop-inspired music. It does not quite match up to Back to Basics and Bionic in terms of full realized genre-based projects because it isn’t as long as they are and is not quite as cohesive and well-balanced but I do think it’s a wonderful return to form and is very passionate and authentic, away from what Lotus sort of became sonically. You can see she was playing with different sounds and textures of her voice and it really feels like a return to the creativity of those more realized projects! But it’s still not quite at the grand level of her earlier ones for me.

I love Like I do! Such a fun track. I personally did not like the lead single “Accelerate” it’s too messy for my taste but the album has such great songs. Maria is amazing as the opening on the Liberation tour.

Lil' bit of relevant trivia: Sick of Sittin' is actually about her judging job on The Voice. She talked about it in 2018 Billboard interview, how it was a toxic work environment, it started well but then went sour. So that's the inspiration behind the lyrics.
And yes, it was a nod to Janis Joplin, even direct reference where she said in a live show: "I make it a policy not to tell anybody to sit down, Just to encourage everybody else to stand up."

I don't know what "Trap" is, but as a (almost 40 yr old) fan of Xtina since the 1998 version of Reflection, I really enjoyed this album. The thing I always loved about Christina since Stripped is that I didn't know what to expect from her next. I love how her voice sounds on Liberation, and she finally gave me the Hip-Hop sounds that I longed from her since the 90s..
I feel like Liberation kind of reminds me of a 90 r&b album. "Accelerate" & "Sick of Sittin" are fun listening to loud in the car! The only song I never cared for was "Maria", that being said.. on the Liberation tour, "Maria" performed live was incredible and emotive.. and "Deserve" & "unless it's with you" were sooo gorgeous performed live on tour as well.
Fall in Line has a solo version of it floating around that I prefer over the duet with Demi.
Just a personal theory, but part of me feels she titled the album "Liberation" bc her recording contract with RCA is coming to an end, as well as she is Liberating herself from stagnant energy (the voice, not touring for more than a decade, etc).

Liberation is a total grower of an album, each song gets better with time. It’s the definition of a grower album as a whole, it’s wasn’t meant to be an album made for radio hits, radio stopped playing her songs since the GaGa fiasco ugh.
