    • @volcrazy89
      @volcrazy89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jonymaggio23 It's a decent album but it feels like a lot of songs that have something missing -- either the chorus is blah (911), the lyrics are meh (Plastic Doll), the vocals are blah (Fun Tonight, Replay) or the production could go harder (Free Woman). Not to mention per usual Interscope released songs that shouldn't be singles (Stupid Love, 911, Sour Candy) as singles/promo songs while ignoring the songs that should've been singles or promo songs (Alice, Enigma, Sine From Above, Babylon). I mean, Alice and Sine From Above are clearly the best mix of vocals, production and lyrics on Chromatica but they've been completely ignored. They did this as well with both Born This Way and Artpop, where they outright ignored songs that should've been singles (Gypsy, Venus, Electric Chapel, Hair) or they got the order of singles incorrect (like putting Mary the Night after You and I and Judas when it should've been the follow up single to BTW, or releasing G.U.Y. after all momentum for Artpop was dead). Even on Joanne they ignored a song like Diamond Heart in lieu of inferior songs John Wayne and Perfect Illusion. For what, exactly? Who the hell knows.

Venus being scrapped as the 2nd single and not getting a music video still haunts me. 😭💔 I was really excited on what visuals and concepts we will be getting. And I really expected some Greek and Roman mythology and some cosmic/astrological, classical-psychedelic art visuals in her future mvs that time. But I really loved that era (especially her street looks!). Because it was the most artistic era of hers.

The meat dress was about DADT. She had arrived to that VMAs with several discharged gay veterans. Also, Gypsy reminds me some of TEOG but it reminds me more of Hair. She actually co-wrote the song with RedOne, which makes me think it was originally meant for the BTW era.

I love ARTPOP, it's the album that got me into Gaga in 2016. Definitely her most experimental and creative piece of work while also being her best sounding album in terms of sound quality (the mastering and mixing on BTW is a bummer, even though the songwriting and production ideas that were thrown into it are incredible). My only complaint with Artpop is that when it gets to J&D, the rest of the album loses cohesion completely.
If I had a chance of going back in time and decide on the release of the album, this is the track order that I would've put:
    1.- Aura
    2.- Venus
    3.- G.U.Y
    4.- Sexxx Dreams
    5.- Do What U Want
    6.- Swine
    7.- Artpop
    8.- Applause
    9.- Donatella
    10.- Fashion!
    11.- Mary Jane Holland
    12.- Dope
    13.- Gypsy
Deluxe Edition: Manicure, J&D, Applause (Empire of the Sun Remix)
So lemme explain. The album is conceptually divided by halves, which represents the two spheres of her persona. The first half is about Love and Sex. She starts as a God-like, powerful, erotic figure that descents into a more human realm while losing power of herself because of being abused by media and people (tracks 5-6). The track Artpop is the centerpiece and serves as a transition from one sphere to another. The second half of the record gets into the more mundane sphere and how she portrays her power based on the superficial and materialistic (tracks 8-11). She loses herself to Fame and drugs and reaches rock bottom (track 12, which one could say it's the album's climax). The closing track, Gypsy, is a hopeful ending to the album. The deluxe Edition tracks: I discarded J&D for obvious reasons. MANiCURE it's a great pop track, but it doesn´t fit with the rest of the album for it's pop-py instrumentation, it would make a Deluxe Version worth it. And I added that remix of Applause because it's fantastic.
I could write a whole essay about this album.

And. i agree, VENUS shoulda been a single too and shoulda had a MV! along with Swine, Aura, Applause, GUY, Do what you want. Lastly, im surprised that Gaga has not yet released a visual albym, knowing her as a creative genius i thought she woulda been the first female pop artists to do a visual album. Either ARTPOP or Chromatica shoulda been a visual album!

I feel like 2013 was the last year of this giant buildpop of a mainstream popand social media era that started around 2007. We had Gaga, Beyonce, Katy, Rihanna, Britney, Kesha etc pretty much on top of the charts. There's never been a pop time like that. I feel like Gaga was riding the high for so long with The Fame, Monster & Born This Way that the haters also grew and they were just ready to push her off the cliff, regardless of what album it was. I feel like it took years from her career and she only recovered from this during her Star Is Born era.

The song ARTPOP is actually insane. One of the most unique songs I've heard, especially coming from a pop emperess (at the time)
In the first verse, art is singing to pop (“Come to me, with all your glamour and cruelty / Just do the thing that you do, and I’ll undress you” - "The *melody* that you choose"
In the second verse, pop is singing to art (“Come to me, with all your subtext and fantasy / Just do the thing that you do, in a perverse hue” - "The *color palette* you choose"
In the chorus, art and pop tell each other that they can belong together as one entity without separation or distinction. In other words, ARTPOP (one word). Not Art Pop, ArtPop, or Art-Pop.
It's just so high concept wrapped in a mesmerizing beat served in the most delicate & strong way, a perfect hybrid. I've never heard anything like it EVER.
Oh and don't even get me started on the lyric "Lovers' kites are flown on beaches for public sight" like why is that sentence so beautiful dawg why did I get chills down my spine just typing it?

I remember being OBSESSED with Artpop when it was first released. It wasn’t until a few years after its release that I heard people had roasted her for this album & thought it was horrible. I was so surprised

OMG, no, no, noooo…..ArtPop is a signature song for her….it’s about her identity as an artist. She’s not just a pop singer, she is creating multidimensional art. Everything about her is art/creation/something for people to react to. I think ArtPop deserves WAY more love Matts-it’s who Gaga is! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Baybee, let me tell you something. Lady Gaga isn't even all the way my type of gurl, but "Applause"? I listen to that song on repeat while I'm running, no matter how far I run. I love it.

So glad you enjoyed "Venus". I love it so much. My sister and my friends don't understand my love for it. I always felt I was alone in the world loving this song and it's chorus so abbaesque so great. This song is one of her best and the music is incredible. The instrumental version is on TH-cam and I can't stop listenning and singing to it.
Plus I so agree with much of what you said it's incredible. Yes Jewels 'n' Drugs is a mess that don't belong there and that doesn't work. Yes, if G.U.Y. was released earlier it would have been a massive hit, and yes Sexxx Dreams is great even with the break and the laughter. It's so nice. I love it. I never thought it sounded like Prince (I thought it sounded like Kylie Minogue like it belonged on her X album or something) but you're right, it also has an important Prince feel, now that you've mentionned it.
But I don't agree with you on the song Artpop, it definitively belongs in that album and in that particular place because half way through the album on my first listen I already had a headache (because of the chaos and of the loudness of some of the songs and for me the song Artpop is really a needed relief there. But besides that, I agree with you and your video is great. Kudos.

I didn't like ARTPOP when it first came...and I still don't like it to this day lol HOWEVER, I bought it on iTunes because I really want to support Lady Gaga, and I believe Act II will be amazing if she releases it.

I would also argue that ARTPOP is her most cohesive as well on the production side. Many of the tracks are Zedd and the other tracks are made to sound like Zedd.

I think you guys make some good points but please know your herstory. ARTPOP wasn't a comedy show. Also, the meat dress (previous era) had a meaning and she was extremely vocal about it being about discharged gay military personnel during Dont Ask Dont Tell. She wasn't just "doing whatever" during ARTPOP, and its almost comical the way it is depicted here. There wasn't one thing that she was doing that didn't have a meaning, whether or not it was lost to the general public. Also, it wouldn't hurt to do a few readings on ARTPOP to know what her vision was for it. Watch The Culture Show interview with her and then some others.
