    My toy poodle did this voluntarily when he was a puppy and we met a (super chill) Irish wolfhound at the park. I decided to put it on a cue. He's 6 now and it has been enormously useful. He knows if he jumps I will catch him. He uses it when he's scared, or to tell me when he's ready to leave the dog park. I have used it in multiple situations where it became suddenly unsafe. I don't take any credit for it. It was the dog's idea.

    I remember when I first taught my Jack Russell to jump into my arms (because I accidentally made picking her up super aversive as a puppy), she would happily jump up at me when I had a treat in my hand but when I grabbed her in the air she freaked out and growled at me and fell down on the floor. I definitely should have worked on handling separately first! Luckily I didn't traumatize her and it's now one of her favorite tricks!

      Awe congrats for working through it. Tug would also growl and want to bite if you tried to pick himup

    Great video! My little dog does not like to be picked up, so I just started teaching her this trick. Day one is over, and we have conquered jump up on my sitting lap and jump up on a small platform. It won’t be long until she’s doing the whole trick. Thanks for your expertise!

    Love it! Thanks! My small dogs can't jump in the car on his own, and I think this will help me let him jump in on his own by jumping on me first! Also this is going to be a great way to get him used to human touch (he has been adopted...)! Thanks!!!

    Having found your puppy insight training membership very useful with our collie/lab cross, I also think it would be great if you ran some workshops in the uk

    I have a miniature australian shepherd, she is very smart and picks up most things well. I have started working on this with her and am having difficulty in the transition from her jumping on my lap while I'm stooped down to a full on jump up while I'm standing with a leg out. She's very agile and athletic and can jump quite high especially when she is excited.... I love your videos and I love how you work with multiple dogs at once, we have two dogs and my aussie gets so excited when I have the other dog involved its hard to contain her :) she is a puppy still

    Would this trick work with strangers too? Many dogs have issue getting near strangers let alone to jump on strangers lap or arm. If this is for your own dog, it shouldn't be a problem. If your dog doesn't like to be handled by you, then it's a lack of trust or relation issue!

    I actually managed to teach my dog to jump up on my lap on command without treats before seeing this video cuz he loves being a lapdog. I would need to integrate it now with standing which i feel like he doesn’t know.

    I'm stuck at the first step. Chloe won't put her back paws up. Either she'll try to stretch for the treat and her front paws will slip off my leg or if she does try to use her back paw it slips between my legs. Any advice?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest to work on the cue with something shes confident jumping up onto until you can say the cue and she just jumps without luring before moving to the lap, or you can practice siting and just tossing a treat over you. At first the dog might jump to avoid going on your lap but after a few tosses try slower luring. Some dogs try to avoid standing on you or other dogs, others dont care hehe. Halo my youngest is the type that when I did some jump up training he didnt want to put his back legs up until I threw the toy over my lap- take care of course with bigger dogs because they can really bruise your leg!

      @@kikopup Thank you so much, I'll work on that. :)
      I actually got the idea to try it with me sitting on the bed this morning and she did sit in my lap. I was shocked and delighted!
      Luckily for me Chloe is a Crested. But I have bruises anyway from bumping into her stairs/ramp lol.

    Great video! Can you tell me a timeline for this skill. Like should I practice getting dog to jump on my lap 5 min a day, twice a day for a week. Then have them jump on low stool a few minutes, twice a day for a week. Etc. thank you! Any help is much appreciated

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on the dog... If the dog is used to learning new behaviors and is physically fit it will go fast. I would keep the sessions short when the jumping part happens Id just do 5-10 repetitions of jumping so as the dog doesnt tire or overwork muscles. You can teach the dog to jump onto a couch with the same cue too. If the dog is too polite to at first jump onto you.

      Some dogs are super polite. You can first train them to jump onto a cushion and add a verbal cue and after around 12 training sessions with the cushion then try with the cushion on your lap while you are sitting on the ground. The cushion will help the dog know the same behavior applies to your lap as the cushion.
