Our 11 month old puppy came with this issue. She’s a Jamaican Labrador terrier mix and she’s gorgeous but her claws are sharp. And she’s quite tall when she’s on her hind legs. I’ve only had her a week and a half she’s a rescue. I’m looking forward to being her forever mummy and Moe Moe being in our family. We also have a rescue cat who I’m surprised she gets on with so far. I do keep her on the lead in the house. After not having a dog for many years I only had one previously… she was a King Charles Cavalier. So chilled out. It was a big change I know I can do this and so can my family members. Our puppy is quite chilled generally. She’s very good otherwise and is a quick learner. I look forward to trying this technique with little Moe. I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for this appreciate it.
This is an excellent question and something I have struggled with for the last 10yrs. My pitbull the sweetest most loving, silly, happy dog in the world... She seems to know that I'm the boss and is good with me, she listens to my kids for the most part but not super consistently. She's really bad with her dad tho and he actually encourages the crazy energy ... like her level of excitement equates her love for him. It's very frustrating, especially if Ive been working a lot and other family members are having more time with her, I come back to a dog that's not so great at listening anymore and I feel like I'm starting all over again.
I have a rescue. Per the shelter and DNA test, she is 16 breeds - none are dominant. From lab to shihtzu. She adores and loves people. Jumping on people is her fav thing to do. I’ll be trying this today. She (7 months) does learn quick, so I’ll be back to update later on. Thanks for sharing👍
That dog is an angel. My six month old puppy is strong and nothing really works. It's depressing. My neighbors avoid us and talk amongst themselves that I can't control my dog.
Your dog's an angel too- just has a different temperment/energy level and different training experiences. There are totally things you can do but you're probably needing help from a pro trainer. Pls don't give up. (I'm a beginning professional dog-trainer 😊).
Wow..it worked..i have issues with people, myself included letting their big dogs jump on people..i don't want my dog acting rude to people..i believe training them to be polite and thoughtful. Thank you for the tips 😊

Brilliant video. When I walk my 5 month old dog there is always a 5-10 minute struggle where he jumps up and bite the leash. I use treats and/or try to reset him to sit position but it only works sometimes. Any suggestions please ?
Would like to see a training with a dog that really does jump on you...not one that's already been trained not to, & only encouraged to jump for this demo!
I use lots of treats when training my 9 1/2 month golden retriever. She's very food driven so it makes it way easier to get her to follow commands. I've trained a Belgium Sheepdog through the local parks and rec classes without treats but that was 25 years ago. Training techniques for dogs has changed. It's all treats and praises/positive reinforcement. I really love this type of training as opposed to telling the dog what they shouldn't be doing all the time. Instead tell them what you want them to do. It's great.🐶
Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to train my dog not to jump since over 4 weeks now but nothing seemed to work. Your method helped in teaching her in less than 2 minutes! I now will continue to reinforce this behaviour till it comes naturally to her!
Great video! I have an almost 5 month old and jumping on people is our biggest problem ( counter surfing too). We’ve had her in classes since she was 9 weeks old but have yet to see this advice. Love it, will start right away. Thank you!
I have a husky that's happy to see anyone. She's like the Mayer, except she's honest. Every time we walk she breaks down another miserable soul a lil closer to being human. Their stiff posture loosens up just a bit everytime she looks at them like they were the next coming of the lord till eventually just after they soften enough to pet her she's on them like a cheap suit if that suit also covered their face. She does in a few minutes accumulatively what a shrink can only dream of doing in a life time. She reduces the hardest. krankiest bastards I've ever seen into a baby talk pile a mush. She is my gift to humanity. So no thank's Mr. Trainer.

OMG Exactly what I need!! We're about to adopt a 1 year old Golden Retriever and the previous owners mentioned that he jumps a lot. Checking this out now!
Hoping this will work for our 18 month old Frenchie we just got 3 days ago...He was gifted to us from some really great people for free...for a companion dog while battling late 4th stage non alcoholic liver cancer...he knows how to sit when I have his toy and won't even blink until I say good boy and toss the toy...the only big issue we have is when on the couch he tends to lovingly jump pretty hard onto my gutt...which has a 9 inch tumor on my liver...this pup is wonderful and sweet...and loving...but sometimes his loving comes to rough housing...he likes to lunge at your face to give slobber kisses and loves...but it's a strong lunge and could scare or frighten any guests or children..tommorow is his apt to get nuetered ....so hoping that will calm him down a notch...we live in apts...that don't have a back yard ..but he gets plenty of exercise when we go to the park across the street to have walks and play...any help would be a huge blessing.
So Am I supposed to leave a leash on her every day inside the house? I don't get it. She jumps on us constantly, and I don't get how this is suppose to work on day to day living. I have an out of control Golden and I'm almost ready to find another family for her. I'm about to lose it.
Thanks a zillion. I have a beagle. Very friendly but doesn't know how to manage himself while playing. This was worry some because there was no boundaries to jumping biting while playing. Got hurt at times and only option was tieing him. I looked for some tutorial and came across this one. Million times thanks from us. The trick is super helpful. He is learning and we too. Lots of love from India
I’m going to try this training with my 1 year old Cocker Spaniel who we adopted. We’ve had him for nearly a year and he came to us with bad habits/no training. We are trying everything from commands/high value reward training/turning our back on him when he jumps and a couple of others things. But not getting very far because he’s so excitable and starts jumping again. The children in our road love Max but he is so powerful he can knock a child over and I don’t want children to be fearful of Max because he’s so sweet and loving. I’ve not tried the long line and stepping on the lead to prevent the jumping etc, so I’m going to try this tomorrow in my back garden because it’s getting late now (8.40pm in the uk 🇬🇧) so fingers crossed and wish us good luck 🤞 Thank you fir your video 😃
Having a big dog in Korea is particularly distressing. My golden retriever likes people too much. A lot of young generation people when they see him they usually say hello to my dog, but the older people doesn't. They don't look at my dog kindly. Usually, even if there are a lot of people walking around my dog he usually just walk away most of time but sometimes occasionally when someone who looks at him then he might be thinking that person may likes me and he wants to jump up and lick their hands as a greeting i know jumping to other strangers may rude. But in fact many older generations look at it with unfriendly eyes or dislike they may just go away not look at my dog but they don’t...Then they're going to say something very frustrating words ... I met this kind of situation again today. So I had to find some videos to educate my dog not jumping on stangers. Thank you for sharing. I hope it will help my dog.
everytime your dog has all four paws on the ground give him a treat.. of course if a strangers dog jumped on me i wouldn’t be happy either but i recommend you stop greeting people all the time it will only create more excitement seeing strangers.. i made the same mistake..
Thank you for these tips. I just adopted a puppy and I've been having issues with her jumping not only on me, but more often, other people. I really think these will help her (Dahlia) learn that jumping in inappropriate! She is incredibly intelligent and has already learned many other commands...she just is sticky still about jumping.
@@hadassahjoseph9877 it did a little bit but I ended up buying a training collar with a beeping feature and it helped. It has a vibrate/shock feature but for distracting her to teach her not to jump the beeping worked wonders.
I just stumbled on your videos.. Thank you for making these. I have a reactive dog I rescued. I have focused so hard on the leash reactivity, I forgot about manners. He jumps on people when they come over. He is just so happy now that he discovered humans aren't so bad.
After finding this on TH-cam i decided to subscribe right away. I have a 16 week cavoodle who is super hyper active. Not what i have had before in a pup. So i hope to learn to train her effectively and in a way she will enjoy. I have bad habits so it will train me too. I don't use a collar on a dog i like harnesses better. I hope this will allow me to train her with no issues. We are finding getting her used to her harness a nightmare as she chewed thru one within 10 mins of my buying it and putting it on her.
We just adopted a very excited 5-month old lab/retriever, and he has a tendency of jumping on people because he’s just so happy to see them lol. I’m on day two of trying this and can I say that it has worked wonders?? He’s a big boy so every time he would jump on us we would nudge him down, but that wouldn’t stop him until I tried this video’s method. Now even on walks whenever I say, “down”, he stops and sits. Only on day two and it takes one try of him jumping on me to not do it again repeatedly like he would. Excited to see where these videos take us. Thank you!
That's a new idea! I have never thought of stepping on the leash. My dog gets crazy excited everytime she sees my mom and we have tried every technique. Next time we will get her to stand on the leash and see what happens.
I actually love that my dog jumps on me and roughhouses with me. She just can't keep jumping on my guests though lol. We'll definitely be working on this.
I was ok with it when he was little but he gains about 5 lbs a month now 8 months at 55 lbs it's not that much fun! It really intimates my friends, so it's a real issue now. He's a very strong, stubborn guy! I wish I had thought of these videos sooner, he thinks he's in control and it's a real issue for me. So be careful!
I agree! I actually like that my pooch gets excited to see me and jumps but my guests do NOT! Especially the children and the elderly people. We may have to give up our joy to have people want to visit our houses LOL.
My mom hates my Boston terrier and she hits my dog very often I watch a lot of this videos and I'm training my dog to show my mom how great a Boston terrier is. Thank you for making videos it really help.
It takes a lot of patience with any dog. Puppy, adult or even a senior dog. They all want nothing more than to please their people - YOU! Like us, they’re constantly learning/wanting to learn. There are so many videos to use as tools to train your dog - it takes time and devotion. All puppies are hyper, that’s a given. They’re like babies or a child - just have patience and enjoy their youth. Once they’re trained, you & they will be happier. L O V E Y O U R D O G !
How do you teach your dog to generalize "off" with other people and not just you? My dog won't jump up on me but gets SO excited when someone is at the door that she hops up and down on her back legs with her paws scratching their knees. She is too excited to respond to treats.
I've seen with other videos, if you know people are coming over and put them on a leash then as soon as they try to jump you say "uh uh" and take them.out of the room. When they calm down, bring them back. Repeat.
Same here, the other issue is people don't really listen to me about turning away from her and reactivily start petting and cooing at her when she jumps on them and ultimately end up encouraging her behavior, she gets way too tunnel visioned with her excitement about company she can't focus any mind to me and kinda the same with house guests....
Jed Sanford can you clarify ignore method? My puppy has razor sharp teeth, tends to lick/bite when greeting or just in general when playing or when excited.
This video looks like itll be a game changer. The previous advice we got was nudge them away, and I just kinda took it as the one giving it to me has had dogs for 30+ years now. But as my girl and me get on in training I'm more and more realizing that that person just kinda... didn’t really train their dogs. And that the nudge makes it into a game makes so darn much sense but it's new info to me. Thank you so much We're gonna try this
Sending you lots of positive vibes of patience, understanding, and consistency! I know this can be stressful but its so worth it so they can enjoy life 💕
Also get your dog used to not getting overexcited about bringing the leash out. Practice putting it on and off random times during the day and reward calmness with the lead on. Good luck!
I own a dashund and if you don't know they have back issues that can become a problem when they are older and jumping is not good for them at my dogs age, thanks for the video it helped
Big dogs are easy- had a Giant Schnauzer but our 10lbs Morkie was much more difficult to train not to jump or walk heel as she’s so close to the ground & not as easily reached to reward. I’d love to see a video with tiny dogs.
I had dogs all my adult life. A trainer said I should try attaching my puppy lab to me by his leash. Sounds crazy but my lab Ebony, (can you guess what colour he was?) was the best behaved dog I ever had. I was a foster parent caring for a beautiful baby boy at the time. So I took Ebony almost everywhere I went, even from the living room to the kitchen as well as out in the car. He followed right by my side, never tripped over him, he paid attention. We had stairs and he was always careful, he never squeezed by me through the door. He was fine when left alone in the house on the occasions for appointments, etc. I can’t take all the credit. I think it was a combination of genetics and bonding. His parents were guide dogs for the blind. He didn’t make it because he was considered too fearful. He is gone now and if I was young enough I would do it all over again. He made me so proud.
I really liked this . My mom has a dog that is good with her, but gets excited and jumps on. Visitors. I am sure she will appreciate and execute the lessons in this very good learning video, many thanks
this is a very helpful video and makes a lot of sense. I have taken a great interest in my sons dog and get to spend time with her and they have done a great job at training her. However she still jumps on people especially when excited and she also tries to get food on the counter. I will share this with them. Thank you. Watching Emmet makes me want a golden retriever: I am still mourning the loss of my black lab; the best dog ever.
Tried this with my dog, he learned he's faster than me and started running away and barreling at me, then run away and barrel at me. Turned into a fantastic game for him. Not so much for me given that he's 75lbs.
Yeah I hear you. I have a Doberman that jumps a lot and I don’t think this leash trick is going to work for me. He likes to jump on me right when I get out of bed because he is excited to start the day. My dog does not always have his leash on, I certainly can’t put it on while he is jumping, and according to this guy, I shouldn’t push him down either. What to do lol. I love my dog by the way, he’s just a crazy puppy
Thank you guys for all the valuable advices. Could you do a video on barking ? My dog won't stop barking when someone comes to our place or if I talk to someone from the balcony or if someone is in the hallway. I tried everything but no use. Any advice ?
Oh yeah, just a few minutes my butt. I did everything you said BUT the dog is also a huge factor in this. Some dogs are harder to train than others and some dogs don't listen as well as others. Don't get discouraged if this doesn't work right away! Keep going and they will eventually learn ❤️
My Doberman turns 3 years old in Nov. 2021. I got him when he was 10 months old. He has learned some things pretty quick. But not pulling on the leash (especially when he is tracking a scent) and not jumping up to meet people face to face are two things he just won't learn.
Same for ours. She learned how to go outside, sit, shake, etc… all at a few months old. We CANNOT get her to stop jumping and attacking the cat and just being super crazy. She’s so wild.
What do you do when the pup goes after the leash whenever I try to put it on her for training like this? It's such a huge distraction that I can't get her to do the behavior I'm trying to correct.
“Get off the cat” lol 😂 I’ve trained my cats to repel off-leash trespassers on my porch with a swift claw to the nose! But seriously, I’ve taken on the retraining of a chicken-killing Shepherd/husky rescue. He jumps up a lot.
I have to take a moment to THANK YOU for this video. I have a large, joyful, 1 year old golden retriever whose jumping on people had become out of control. On Sunday, just two days ago, I had my family of 4 watch this video with me. Honestly, we were all pretty skeptical saying the dog you had as a model must have already been trained. But with nothing to lose, I bought the house leash and collar and tried it for the first time Monday. Just once. Today, was the real test: one of his favorite people came over and ordinarily I can't get him to stop jumping. I stepped on the leash and he tried to jump 2 or 3 times, then sat down. We gave him a treat and a lot of praise and he tried to jump again and when he felt the pull of the leash sat back down. I would say this happened for maybe a minute, before he sat down and let himself be petted. I gradually put slack in the line and any time he looked like he might jump told him to sit and rewarded him with praise. He has now successfully gone up to our guest multiple times without jumping and without me stepping on the leash. I did not jerk the leash, make the leash so short that he couldn't get up, raise my voice, push him down or put out a knee. Just stepped on the leash. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! Thank you so much for your clear instructions!! I absolutely recommend this video and look forwarding to checking out other techniques on your channel. Thank you!
I was doing that with my dog I was taking her to church and she kept getting up to play or get petted so I put the leash under my food to keep her laying and I only had to do it twice and she learned quick
General question please; working with my 8 month rescue hound (he scents ALL the time! which is hard enough) but jumps up too. I use the line to correct him but he frantically twists/ turns like a snake and bites (a puppy playful bite but it hurts). He’s relentless and can keep this up for an hour. I’ve broken training to calmly walk him or feed him but the minute I sit down he thinks I’m a rag toy. I live in a very rural place in France and there isn’t any training schools to help me. Thank you and Emmet is doing great 🧡

How am I supposed to be consistent when, in a family of 5, I'm the only one consistent?! T^T
I have this same problem😭
Best part of living on my own 🙏🏻
@@Andy_1777 I'm jealous. >
I have the same problem with my family when my family members are the ones who complain about it the most😑
This is an excellent question and something I have struggled with for the last 10yrs.
I could listen to Steve forever, so calm and confident. Very helpful training style!
He is obviously the goodest boy so of course he got it.
Thank you! After 12 weeks of puppy training and still having this problem, NOW I have the technique to STOP my 42 pound, 10 month old terrier mix!
It’s so funny how I’m saying “good boy” right along with the trainer ❤. Love these videos!! I have a new puppy and they are very helpful!

So what if your coming home from work and there is no leash. What is the best way to stop the jumping?
Can I just send you my dog???
I have 2 puppies how do i train them at the same time
I use lots of treats when training my 9 1/2 month golden retriever. It's great.🐶
Yes! I trained my stubborn husky with positive reinforcement and it worked :)
Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to train my dog not to jump since over 4 weeks now but nothing seemed to work. Your method helped in teaching her in less than 2 minutes! I now will continue to reinforce this behaviour till it comes naturally to her!
MY DOG OBEYS MEN, ANY MAN BETTER THAN SHE DOES FOR ME. IS IT BECAUSE SHE THINKS IM SOFT? IS THE BASS IN THE VOICE.
Thanks!
Worked with my 1 year old German Shepherd - Husky in 5 minutes. We will be doing this every day this week
Great video! I have an almost 5 month old and jumping on people is our biggest problem ( counter surfing too). We’ve had her in classes since she was 9 weeks old but have yet to see this advice. Love it, will start right away. Thank you!
Did it work?
Trainer.
Have a 7 month German Shep. Literally he’s is 90% compliant with this after after 15-20 minutes and this is day one… definitely doing this everyday
Just under 4 month old mastiff/boxer mix here ... this is going to come in handy before our big goose gets bigger!
Thank you!!!

How u train dog to stop barking

One has to be so sharp and present and quick to actually reward the right thing in the right moment. Dogs are just so fast. Good job !
My golden and I will debrief and reflect upon what we just watched. 🐶 We BOTH really needed to see this. I'm going to try this right away.
I’ve not tried the long line and stepping on the lead to prevent the jumping etc, so I’m going to try this tomorrow in my back garden because it’s getting late now (8.40pm in the uk 🇬🇧) so fingers crossed and wish us good luck 🤞
Thank you fir your video 😃
Hi sue,
Did you try it? Does it work?
@@7kooklaid Thank you ! I will try then .
Did it help ?
@@hadassahjoseph9877 it did a little bit but I ended up buying a training collar with a beeping feature and it helped. It has a vibrate/shock feature but for distracting her to teach her not to jump the beeping worked wonders.
He seems like a pretty calm dog to start though. I'm going to try this for sure. Thank you for the tips!
I just stumbled on your videos.. Thank you for making these. I have a reactive dog I rescued. I have focused so hard on the leash reactivity, I forgot about manners. He jumps on people when they come over. He is just so happy now that he discovered humans aren't so bad.
i really thought wearing shorts was a good idea
me looking at all the scratches on my legs : 👁👄👁
I can’t wear shorts ever since I got my puppy
Dania Flores me too
At least you can wear shorts!! My boy loves to grab and pull my pants down for all the neighbors to enjoy too! 🤦🏽♀️
Right
Same here with my huskies💀
After finding this on TH-cam i decided to subscribe right away. I have a 16 week cavoodle who is super hyper active. Not what i have had before in a pup. So i hope to learn to train her effectively and in a way she will enjoy. I have bad habits so it will train me too. I don't use a collar on a dog i like harnesses better. I hope this will allow me to train her with no issues. We are finding getting her used to her harness a nightmare as she chewed thru one within 10 mins of my buying it and putting it on her.
This video is really great. I just got a female Mal and she is so smart and I taught her this in about 10 minutes or less.
Thank you! I have a 8 month pocket bully and although she’s stubborn she learned this quickly! It works!
Two questions:1) how do you keep a dog from chewing on the leash? 2) how can you adapt this exercise while sitting on the couch relaxing?
Danielle Border the leave it command and redirect to something it can chew on
Dog bites leash: No
You bring treat close to leash: if he takes treat then Yes, otherwise say No again until he does
Invest in a chain/metal leash. The metal will deter the biting.
Thank you so much my cane corso has a huge jumping problem
You need to tell your mother that hitting is unacceptable under all circumstances.
In the following process I feed my dog so many treats he can’t jump anymore 😂
Alisha, my boy put weight on too! See ‘Absolute Dogs’ where your whole dog’s feed is used ‘as treats’ for training.
Read.....’ditch-the-bowl’ ....
😹😹😹
I use dog food but he still gained some weight
Use part of the dogs meals as your treats
My puppy loves ice cubes to crunch on..... no weight gain from those! Hope your dogs like ice cubes.

Great content: clear, to the point, and not simply marketing for paid content. 👍
The best videos I have found so far!
Repeat.
@@rachelt5687 thanks
Same here my pup never jumps on me but only on other people
Same problem here with my 5 month old golden retriever.. any tips?
Same here, the other issue is people don't really listen to me about turning away from her and reactivily start petting and cooing at her when she jumps on them and ultimately end up encouraging her behavior, she gets way too tunnel visioned with her excitement about company she can't focus any mind to me and kinda the same with house guests....
This is the cutest and greatest puppy. He's going to be a super great dog. I want him!
He is just soooooo happy so cute thank you for sharing it helped us with our golden girl!:)
I know! Love that puppy rompiness omg!! 💕💕💕
Awesome video. Thank you McCann Dog Training!
Just tried the stepping on lead trick and my 3 month old retrodoodle just bites into my thigh. Guess I have to solve biting before jumping.
U ahould consider watching the show of Victoria Stilwell titled its me or the dog, shes a dog trainer too.
Retrodoodle omg! 😆😆
some stuff is really difficult to teach while they are still teething. the ignore method worked really well on the puppy biting for me though.
🤜🐕
That usually does the trick.
Jed Sanford can you clarify ignore method? My puppy has razor sharp teeth, tends to lick/bite when greeting or just in general when playing or when excited.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. My sisters pup is jumping all the time. I know what to do now.
My dog is different bruh this aint workin for me😂
😂
This video looks like itll be a game changer.
The previous advice we got was nudge them away, and I just kinda took it as the one giving it to me has had dogs for 30+ years now. But as my girl and me get on in training I'm more and more realizing that that person just kinda... didn’t really train their dogs. And that the nudge makes it into a game makes so darn much sense but it's new info to me.
Thank you so much
We're gonna try this
If I put the leash on my dog to keep him from jumping, he’s going to go crazy thinking we’re going for a walk.
Sending you lots of positive vibes of patience, understanding, and consistency! I know this can be stressful but its so worth it so they can enjoy life 💕
Do it outside
Also get your dog used to not getting overexcited about bringing the leash out. Practice putting it on and off random times during the day and reward calmness with the lead on. Good luck!
😂👍
Yes, what Tamsin said. Desensitize your dog from the leash!
I own a dashund and if you don't know they have back issues that can become a problem when they are older and jumping is not good for them at my dogs age, thanks for the video it helped
So I have a puppy that actually gets excited and impulsive
Emmett is clearly the opposite

Big dogs are easy- had a Giant Schnauzer but our 10lbs Morkie was much more difficult to train not to jump or walk heel as she’s so close to the ground & not as easily reached to reward.
I’d love to see a video with tiny dogs.
Super fan….thank u so much for always teaching not only the puppy…but to me too 😂
I had dogs all my adult life.
Will continue practicing with my puppy....thanks!!
this is a very helpful video and makes a lot of sense.
Thank you so much for making these videos they really help me
The only video I’ve seen that actually looks effective thank you
Tried this with my dog, he learned he's faster than me and started running away and barreling at me, then run away and barrel at me.
Why did y’all get dogs you obviously can’t handle?
Brilliant video, will start doing this with my puppy who gets overly excited when we're outside. Thank you

Oh yeah, just a few minutes my butt. I did everything you said BUT the dog is also a huge factor in this. Some dogs are harder to train than others and some dogs don't listen as well as others. Don't get discouraged if this doesn't work right away! Keep going and they will eventually learn ❤️

What if you have two dogs both that jump? Train them separately ?
This has been the most successful. Thank you so much.
This is a good fix. My 5 month old GoldenDoodle is rambunctious and it's not fun for us anymore. I am going to work with the line
Great Idea! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great video! we are definitely working through this with our dog!
Great video! I’m going to try it later!
What do you do when the pup goes after the leash whenever I try to put it on her for training like this? It's such a huge distraction that I can't get her to do the behavior I'm trying to correct.
Hello pastel👋, how are you doing
Brilliant video - thank you! Looking at the subtitles, I don't think Alicia would appreciate being called a tool, though.
Did you mean to say "foot" instead of food?
Your training program is Awesome!!!!!
Love this channel and all it's quality information! The humor is the cherry on top🤣 7:19
Thank you and Emmet is doing great 🧡
Have a year old glodendoodle. He likes to chew the leash during training, what I can I do stop him from doing that so he focused on the training?
Teach him the “leave it” command.
