These exercises are for all dogs, as most dogs do not like to be handled. This video is the first in a series to come...
I am sorry about the big block of text at the beginning of the video, but it is because this exercise needs to be taken seriously, as if done wrong you can scare a dog, and a frightened dog will bite, as will any animal that is frightened.
If you are worried that your dog is too shy or frightened to work with, you can talk to an animal behaviorist first. Another game you can do is just tossing the dog treats, and feeding the dog his meals by dropping the kibble for the dog following you.

A key facet to successful counter-conditioning that's left out here is ruling out other predictors of the food. When you do these rapid, rhythmic repetitions, time becomes more of a predictor than touch. The way to avoid that is easy: make irregular ITIs (inter-trial intervals), i.e., space out your touches with variable intervals of time in between.

Another good lesson, Emily. I love that you used dogs that aren't already trained and are up for adoption. I find it really helpful to see you working with a dog on something for the very first time. I've taught our Zoe several of your lessons and I'm amazed how she gets it in just a few repetitions now. She seems to understand what YES means now. Thanks for helping all of us.

I must say-I've been working w/ Jackson in a similar way. He's not like super super fearful like I've seen some dogs but he's def. shy w/ strangers (not with ppl he knows at all!) and I've been bringing him to little league games and he's actually begun going up to little kids on his own and i ask the kids if they want to give him a treat. he's gotten significantly better in only a few months! im going to continue on with more advice from this vid.

Your recent video on vet handling reminded me that you have other handling videos I should revisit. My current foster is very shy. Fortunately he does like being pet in some ways, but only under very specific circumstances and only by someone he's known for a bit. A lot like Tug and the first dog you featured. Thank you for sharing your protocol and recording your training sessions.

It really depends on the dog, but sometimes teaching them to target an object at a distance with their nose, like a tupperware upsidedown. And when its really strong and on cue, holding it out still to touch and throwing the treat away so the dog has to reapproach.

    • @LindsayHaven

Thank you, you are so kind to comment. We have a gentle hand touch right now, but targeting some other object will be another fun item to add to our list. ☺️

Excellent vid. This is an essential for ALL dogs. I start every puppy off in this way and every owner i train works on this as their daily rountine. Even if they seem confident, this is something i recommend to be put into the dogs daily training routine, so that touching and handling is a WELL CONDITONED pleasurable experience. I used this to overcome my dog Jaffa's shyness when we first got him 9yrs ago now...it really is excellent for changing their perception of things.

Thank you!! - Jillian *I may post this to the facebook chihuahua fan page. I think it will help a lot of chi owners!

    This is very useful.
We've just adopted a new puppy mill dog and he's immensely scared of almost everything. He'll either freeze in place, cower to make himself as small as possible, or try to back away to safety.
The combination of his fear, and our current dogs excitement to have a dog to play with has been difficult.

Haha I think I accidentally did a really basic version of this. My girl was a feral pup when I got her. She didn't like being handled, and even after finally getting interested in humans and affection, she shied away. But she's clumsy and very sporty, so when she'd trip head-over-heels chasing the ball, I would have to pat her down for injuries. Since I was worried and didn't want to freak her out, I would also soothe her by giving her rubs where she loves them (like her rump and under her collar) during her inspection, and praise her after. It's still not her favorite thing, but she's become incredibly tolerant of handling now. I can check her teeth, rotate her joints, and touch her belly without her pulling away.

@c0boy great that there is another dog. If the dog is shy with the owners too, they could just only give food for handling, nothing out of the bowl. Yes I worked with a pitbull that sat under the table for 20 minutes! For that dog going in the yard and throwing his ball made him realize "oh! She is one of those Ok people" but the next time I visited he was under the table again. If the dog isnt shy then, the owner could only feed the dogs meals for conditioning to people.

I have a labradoodle pup who is not shy towards most noises, even loud noises, may startle but recovers easily enough. She hid the first time I tried to use the clicker, something about that sound concerns her greatly. She is to be trained to be a Balance/Counter Balance Service Dog. Is this a bad sign? I use "Yes" for training.

@boredstephanie yeah... I had thought about writing it in the description or filming myself talking, but I wanted to give people the impression on how serious this exercise is. If you screw up, you could get bitten! And that is why I put off making this video for so long. I hope that I am not encouraging people to 'harass' their shy and fearful dogs!

@RatongaBruiser Victoria Stillwell (British TV trainer) demonstrates that these dogs are stimulated by all the visuals going on outside the car. Her solution is to block their view with fabric over the rear windows and a curtain behind the driver to completely block their view. Have someone assist you by driving the car, and take down a bit of the curtain so they can see. The INSTANT anybody barks, put the curtain back up. Teach them that if they want to have a view, they must be calm.

I`ve seen that and Caesar`s solutions. I was hoping Kikopup had conditioning solutions instead as he barks even before he`s in the car, once in the car, and in any new environment. He isn`t even usually looking out the windows, just watching the people in the car or laying down making excited yips and whines while staring at the back of the seats.

What do you know about anxious dogs that get overly excited by things like car rides and seeing other dogs and start barking over and over in high pitches? Taking my dogs on a long walk beforehand isn`t an option since I`m usually driving him to a place such as the beach or park to use up energy (and then he`s mostly quiet on the way back).

Hi Emily, could you please give me some advice to help a very shy SHELTER DOG? The problem in short: The dog seemed INTERESTED IN THE FOOD ONLY BUT SHOWED NO INTEREST AT ALL IN THE PERSON GIVING IT TO HIM (NO SNIFFING OR LOOKING AT ME AT ALL). Would you say, this is only a question of time or is there anything in particular I could do to help him build up contact?
Description of dog and situation: He's about 3-4 years old and spent all his life in dog shelters in Slowakia. He takes food out of the hand of his foster woman but there is no way to touch him. I only visited him once (unfortunately the shelter is more than 2 hours drive away from where I live). To me he seems rather careful than fearful, which means, he doesn't run away and hide but stays near, if you move slowly, takes food very tenderly. He chose to stand on the roof of his kennell, I sat about 1 m beside him. There was another dog, that sat in front of me on the ground. I fed them both with treats. It took me close to 2 hours to get the shy dog take food from my hand (only from the finger-tips, never out of the palm of my hand). 2 or 3 times he would put his nose near my empty hand to be imediately rewarded with food thrown to him from the other hand, but once he had checked out that the hand would stay empty, he would slowly back away again and wait. I sat with my back towards him and put food close to my back. After a while would take it, he would even take food placed upon my thigh, but he would never so much as sniff at me. And of course he wouldn't look at me. I also avoided looking at him too much. Kind of ignored him for about an hour exept for throwing or reaching out food towards him. I often looked away, blinked and yawned, but don't know if he aknowledged that ;-). I'd really love to help that dog.
I'D BE VERY THANKFULL IF YOU WOULD WRITE BACK TO ME!!

He just needs more work. Don't push him, and keep spending time working on positive reinforcement, socialization, and eventually, handling and onward. I'm sure he will be fine. It takes a while to work through issues, just like with humans. It really is that simple.

If brought out, the moment he reached home and touches the floor or entered the house, he will immediately run to the kitchen. If there is a guest, he will not come out until my aunt carried him out and hold him in her hands. If she let go, the dog will run back again. But he's supercute you know......

+Lauren Smolic My dog is exactly the same. I suggest not to force her to take treats from strangers for now. Tell strangers to completely ignore her, don't stare at her or encourage her closer as this makes her feel more threatened. What I did that proved extremely helpful was this: take her to a place were she can see strangers from a distance. When she sees a "suspicious" one, pop a tasty treat in her mouth. Then once she gets the idea, you can click or you can say "yes" when she sees someone, get some eye contact, and treat. As she gets more comfortable you can scoot closer to the people. Don't just make it harder and harder though. Try to back up steps every once in a while. If she reacts, you've moved too fast, simply go back and start again. :) Make sure you do not treat for any reactions! I hope this helped you!! It helped me a lot!

@Bostism Do you own a beagle by chance? Dogs are opportunists, some will eat until they pop. That is why a lot of dogs in the US are obese. Once a dog has done something undesirable, and you didnt get to them until afterwards, (like peeing in the house) there is no way to tell them that thing they already did wasnt a good idea (unless you teach them to speak English first). OBVIOUSLY the dog loved eating the food and will be MORE likely to do it again in the future

Did you actually watch and listen to the video?

    • @foofieviolet
      @foofieviolet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Luculencia start by simply having a guest who you trust and is a calm person with a soft voice sit on the ground so they aren’t towering above your dog, and then have them throw a treat on the ground near your dog. That way she starts to associate strangers and guests with treats. Like she says in the video, make it a really high value treat, like cheese or meat. Just have your friend do this for a couple minutes without reaching or trying to let your dog. If you’re friend has free time, have them back ASAP on another day to do the same thing again. It might take a few sessions b4 your dog approaches them close enough to touch. You can have any guest or person you meet out walking simply drop a treat on the ground for your dog. I ask this of perfect strangers when they pass or ask to pet my dogs, explaining my dog is working on fear of strangers and ppl are always happy to help.
When your dog starts wagging it’s tail at ppl cuz they expect treats, have a trusted calm friend hold a treat in their palm without moving and seeing if your dog will choose to take treats from their hand; in other words, the dog is choosing to make physical contact. You want your dog to get to the point where they don’t just grab the treat and retreat, but stay in the same place to get more treats. Then you can have your guest hold out a treat and trying moving their other arm just a little, but far away from the dog, and gradually get closer and closer until they can move the hand around the dogs head, and when this stops spooking the dog, then touch them for a second. I’ve had dogs with fear/aggression, and you’d b surprised what you’re friends will do if you ask. If they love dogs and you ask them to help your dog and tell them exactly what to do, they will often happily help.

I am kind of desperate. I just got a new dog that is frightened of me and other people (still after 3 weeks). I try and give him treats, but he is not interested. He eats well but only if he is alone. I leave the door open so he can go outside, and he is fine. However, when I come near, he runs away from me. This is a great video however, I can't even give him treats without him running away! He will also not go on walks. Once the leash is on him, he freezes. Many have told me to just give him space and he will come to me. But it is very depressing that he just wants to sleep all day and avoids everything (he is healthy!!). Even with other dogs. I assume he was badly beaten or has never had contact with humans. He is estimated to be 1 years old and is a dachshund/Spaniard mix.. I need advice!
