2 weeks ago we installed massive 38 inch Milestar Tires on Rocktrix rims on our STOCK Suspension Jeep TJ! • Our Jeep Computer DIED... . We showed the absolute largest size tire that fits on a stock height jeep tj, literally pushing the wheel well to its limit!
On Today's episode, we show you, step by step, how we installed our 4 inch dual rate SkyJacker Lift kit with M95 shocks completely in our garage with tools that are affordable. Our goal was to make a video to help walk you through the entire install process, as well as show you the order of how we installed each part, giving you the confidence to attempt the job yourself.

Appreciate that!
I don't care what anybody say's, I think ya'll are amazing doing that all by yourselves.
You guys have a sweet TJ! I’m not here to bash on it but to provide some insight and advice to a fellow Jeeper. Some problems I can see that you guys may want to check into include:
1) Flex out the suspension and see what hits. Looks like you don’t have enough of a bump-stop for the tire size (especially for the rear).
2) The rear shocks are going to hit the spring perches when they’re fully compressed. Common TJ problem especially when adding a lift. You can get the shock relocation brackets for less then $50.
3) The skyjacker is a budget lift and a problem it doesn’t fix is the suspension geometry that results from raising the the frame away from the axle. As you go up in lift your wheelbase gets shorter. The skyjacker arms doesn’t correct this since they are the factory length.
4) For the future consider getting a set of adjustable control arms. This will really help set up better pinion angles and get your caster back into a factory spec.
5) Also when flexing out the Jeep check the length of brake lines. I didn’t see you guys swap them out within the video.
Hope this helps and good luck on the build!!
Appreciate this very much! We will test out some of these and try to fix them if they need fixing. We have a set of adjustable uppers ready to go on. The skyjacker arms were a bit longer than the factory arms, we didn't realize it until after we made the video. Cheers
what's your opinion on the rought country 4 inch long arm lift. looking for something around this price range (1000-1800), this video was posted 3 years ago. I see some kits have added stuff.
Had a similar lift. Won’t mention the company. When I changed out the fixed control arms for a full set of Metal Cloak Adjustable Control Arms I fell I love with the way my Jeep drove again.
I just ordered all the Metal Cloak control arms , tie rod , drag link, and track bar for mine ….currently my 4 door JK is rocking side to side worse than my tj ever did… hoping it fixes my issue
Man that looks awesome. I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ sport in the same color. Right now it only has a 2 inch lift and 31s. I'm trying to find some rubicon axles (4:10) so I can add a 4 inch lift to it eventually and 33s or 35s. It will be going to college part 2 (masters) with me. This Jeep really is special because my parents have owned it every since I was born. They actually brought me home from the hospital in it, so it is crazy to think that I'm driving it. It's also pretty cool that you are a school teacher. My mom is an 8th grade math teacher and my dad is a 9th grade history teacher. I currently am a math tutor at my mom's school for 7th and 8th grade. Previously, I worked at my undergrad university as an Organic Chemistry, Chem 111, 112 and an Oceanography lab TA. Now, I have a teaching assistantship at my next university where I am getting my MS in Biology. I really hope I can find those upgraded axles before I leave for graduate school though. The Jeep currently has 3:07 gears and they suck. This university is wayyy up in the mountains and the elevation difference results in a large power difference than where I currently live.
This is my 1st time tuning in & I'll keep it 100%...I saw Skyjacker, pavement princess wheels and yet another Jeep with them dang Patagonias and I was quick to pass judgment & dismiss it as another mall crawler build channel & was gonna keep it moving...not that there's anything wrong with all that, just not my cup of tea but y'all charisma & chemistry stopped me from moving on. Then I skimmed through the rest of your content and realized it isn't what I'd initially thought. Seems like y'all have ran the Jeep Life gamut & I almost passed judgement based on perception. Good stuff, keep up the good work.
Appreciate the honest feedback! Glad you enjoy the channel and the content. We are hoping to build up this rubicon with quality parts! So far, we couldn't be happier! Let us know if you have feedback or any questions! Cheers!
From a future educator to another: Besides being BA teaching - you are a BA for these videos! Also, you educated another (future) educator.
Thank you so much for your kind words! This made us smile 😃
I’m reading the comments and I don’t see ANY HATE, so I’m here to change that... kidding but these videos are awesome and I’m hoping to pick up my own tj soon!!!
Haha you haven't looked hard enough :) Thank you for your support and enjoy your new tj!
Love your channel, I’m new to all of this. Keep it up
You guys should do a video showing how the suspension has settled over the past few months and do another measurement to see if it's "sagged" since the install
Thays a great idea! It hasn't sagged :)
@@Garagecouple any update on this?
Do you not have any drive shaft vibration? You didn't have to do anything to compensate for the larger angle of the driveshaft? Like lowering your transfer case?
We didn't have to lower it and we get minimal vibes. Maybe because of the larger tires, but in any case we have a cv shaft ready to install
Just saw this video and you guys rocked this install. Thanks for sharing
Awesome! Thank you!!!!
Mom was right..... I KNEW I shoulda been a doctor! You guys are a cute couple. Well she's the cute.... you are the couple..... lol. Thnx for the videos guys.
Lololol!
I have to say... I came to see what brand of wheels you're running, but stayed for the video! that is one of the best lift kit install videos I've ever seen! well done! you should have unbolted the control arms, you may have won the bet!!
Thanks! 👍 We love your kind words and support! Took us FOREVER to make this video but comments like yours make it worth it!
@@Garagecouple Keep it up!!
Sick you guys. Wow. What a stance. I know this is 6 months old but I wanted to congratulate you both on an awesome looking Jeep and a great tutorial. God bless and be safe. Btw. I just bout a 90 YJ 3" lift last week. Planing on going 4.5 & 33s. 😎👍
Thank you so much! We appreciate your kind words and hope you enjoy that YJ! CHeers!
just some advice that helped me with my manual tj, get the S.Y.E kit and driveshaft i had problems with the 4wd shifter and transmission shifter till i installed the sye kit, also upgrade the upper control arms and look into quick disconnects for front sway bar. upgrade the trac bar helps with lift i use the iron rock trac bar its beefy!!! also honestly should only use drop pittman arm if you going over 6" lift i did alot of research on that subject and talk to alot of pros. hopefully this helps out , keep up the cool vids!!!
You can;t do a SYE kit on a rubicon..There is no slip yoke on the transfer case.
@@Garagecouple oh yeah its has a different tcase than my 231 lol my bad
Looks like it still needs some trimming in the rear if it is going to flex any. Awesome build guys!
Yeah, fortunately the dual rate springs keep things nice and stiff. We are planning on taking it to a fabricator and cutting the rear tub. Either that or a body lift. If we do a body lift it won't clear the garage lol!
@@Garagecouple metalcloak makes a mod cut mounting plate for your exact problem. All you need after you buy it is a grinder or dremel to cut away the tub, you shouldn't need to pay anyone for any fab work. However, I understand not wanting to cut up your car if you don't have experience. It would be a pain to mess it up.
Cut the tub. I wouldn’t recommend a body lift. Nice job so far.
Glad to see you took that spacer lift out.
Nothing wrong with a spacer lift
Aloha gang, just checking in to see how the Skyjacker suspension is holding up after all this time, back here in the islands, especially my Jeep community are telling me not to go with either RC or Skyjacker. Next project with my 03 TJ is a suggested long arm kit because I want to run 37's....I will also be beefing up the rear D44 & swapping the front D30 for a D44(G2)...
It’s crazy how tires and lift totally change the look of the jeep
Agreeed
Good video guys. Reminded me when I put my lift on my Jeep in the garage last year. Super cool to see it all lifted and moving around. Take care guys and keep the videos coming.💪💪🙂🙂
Appreciate your support
That thing is NASTY!!! Such a good job guys 💪
Upgrade those shocks when you can. It will blow your mind! Rubicon Express is a great value but the Bilstein has better valving. If ya got the dough go FOX
But either way the jeep is amazing!
Also drop the pitman arm if it didnt come with a bracket.
You need those two arms aligned for proper steering geometry
Thank you! Yes it came with a drop pitman arm, but reading the forums, people say not to drop the pitman arm if you dont adjust the upper track bar.
Is it in line?
I'd have to take it up to freeway speeds. I'll do that soon
Aloha my fav TH-cam couple,
Thought I’d check in on how the Skyjacker lift is going for you, I have an 03 TJ with 33’s, but want to go with 37’s next. What the reason that you went with Skyjacker and not another brand.
Great job on the lift! Can't wait for the follow-up videos!! Congrats!
Thank you! Appreciate the support!
i watch all your videos you guys are amazing one question? did you make any trimming cut in the back rear side. ? i want to do the same tired 38s the new 37 😅
I don't even have a Jeep but I watched the whole vid and that is SIIIIIICK! :-)
The best
@@Garagecouple I'm in Australia and looking at buying a used TJ. I'm starting to see older used JKs around the same price (within $2k) of a well looked after TJ. In your experience would you spend an extra $2k for a used JK or stick with the TJ?
Having both, I would buy the TJ! Its a better jeep!
You two are outstanding. I really enjoyed this just off the atmosphere.
Love this!
Love this channel, love that y’all are Jeep lovers and Christ followers. Your Rubicon had an awesome stance on those 38’s without the 4” lift, so curious what made y’all want to lift it?
Side note - I’m also running a 4” SkyJacker lift with 35’s on my white JK Wrangler and it’s smooth on the highway and fun & bumpy on city streets, so y’all made a nice choice. The shock bodies are all white too so they match the Jeep nicely 👌🏻
Thank you for the kind words! Even though it fit without the lift, it was practically impossible. Love the skyjacker lifts!
@@Garagecouple My pleasure! Y’all should bring your Rubi to Dallas
@@Garagecouple And also, I love those fender flares on your red Rubi. Where can I get a set for my White JK X?? Do they make them for the JK??
@@stephenisaaks1 they absolutely do. They are @metalcloak high line fenders
How are your axel's holding up with the 38's or have you built them up?
Looks like you need to extend your wheelbase by bringing the rear wheels back 2 maybe 3 in towards the bumper
I really like how you work together
For sure needed a regear. What's the top speed with 38s on it ?
What are your thoughts on Body lifts to add more clearance for bigger tires, at present I’m running a 3-1/2” RE Lift w/33’s, would like to run 36’s in near future, I will be changing the gears to 4:88 and add chromoly axles also...
Up to 1.25 inches is perfect, no more than that!
Jeep looks awesome
Thank you!
A pillar Grab bars are a must now! Great video!
Thank you! For whatever reason they require drilling in this model year vs our 2001 that doesn't
@@Garagecouple it's about a 1 1/2 hole in the plastic trim. Totally worth it in my '05 tj
Agree. On our 01 its totally exposed
I got 6 Months 5,000 miles before axel and hub failure on those stock Dana44s
Wow
that is a beast wish i could afford to do mine
You can! We saved up to do this!
Hey Guys what axles are you running in the front and rear and what gear ratio
Stock rubicon 44s
Hum! I did mine without spring compressor, I too off the lower arm and was able to move axle enough to get springs in
Ehh how much did you lift it
@@Garagecouple same 4”
Love it
Huge indeed, congrats guys!
Cheers! Thanks for the support!
you both together amazing team great 👍🏻 fun . what sides are the coils springs they look sick 😎
Thanks 👍 They are 4.5 inches of lift :)
What a beautiful build. Keep the videos coming
Thank you so much!
Just jack up other side axle, right side will drop and set spring right in
I see a new cardon drive shaft, pinion angle adjustment (and shim kit for rear), and adjustable control arms (at least in the rear), and regearing in your future.... :D Great videos guys. Wondering the weight added with the mods......
We already did the Driveshaft and made an entire video on how to set pinion angles with adjustable arms. No need to regear, it hauls!
@@Garagecouple I did not wait to see how far you went. God you guys are great!
You have GREAT content. I own 2 Jeeps and a Hummer..... and enjoy your ideas. Keep making content.
My son (15) saw this and now Im doing my `99 Sahara just like it for him. Going with a Currie lift but exact rims, tires, metalcloak (ordered), and front bumper. Way cool! Any tire rubbing at all? My son doesnt wheel so itll be a mall crawler.
Hi! Love hearing that! Its an awesome set up, no rubbing :)
Hey guys, great videos. Loving the wheels on the TJ. What are they?
Check out our 38s with no lift video for full details :)
wait... so i can lift a jeep in my own garade? how long of a job is this?
Raised my TJ 4 inches. My axles are way off. I cant figure it out. I hope and pray adjustable stabilizer solves the problem.
You probably need adjustable track bars.
@@raybates3119 had to get an adjustable track bar and upper and lower adjustable control arm.. I had to get bump stops and now currently regearing my TJ to 4.88. Just bought some wheel adapters, Gusset kit, axle truss, and ball joints.. just need to buy some front big brake kits and then I'll be ready for my 37's.. oh yea. I'm also buying those supermicrochips for some extra horsepower and torque.. damn this thing is work just to put some 37s on
@@kkim1177 Yeah. I have a 4" Skyjacker lift on my 02 TJ and I only run 33's. It has the optional Dana 44 so it has 3.73 gears and the 33's seem at home there. I had 37's on my 2018 JL Rubcon with 4.10's and 4" lift. The lift was perfect and the gearing was around town but we put it back to stock and 35" Dick Cepek Extreme Terrain MT's. Unless you are going to off road a majority of the time, that factory Rubicon suspension is hard to beat.
Got a link to the cargo net
Wow!....you Guyz did great!
Thank you!
New to your channel next time on the front, remove the track bar all the way off and if you unbolt the lower control arm the axle will drop more and don't have to compress your springs. All for the shocks the lower bolt use a 13 wrench and and drill or ratchet with a 13 socket.
I've removed my front dana 30 about a hundred times
Thank you! I appreciate the suggestions!
Persian accent never leaves 😂
Neither of us are Persian
What about brake lines? Were the stock lines long enough?
Looks like the rear main leak is back?
Fortunately its not! That was just some water dripping from the exhaust :)
The metalcloak fenders help a lot!! Awesome jeep!
Cheers! Thanks
Imagine scrolling through youtube and finding that your teacher has a youtube channel 😂
Or your doctor lol
@@Garagecouple true 😂
You guys are the cutest couple.
Aww thank you!
@@Garagecouple you are welcome. I just stumbled upon your channel and I'm enjoying them and learning a lot
27:35 Is that sway bar link backward? Also, with the trackbar/drop pitman arm - you want both the drag link and trackbar to be parallel. I think that by moving the trackbar over, you may need the drop pitman arm to achieve that.
Thanks for the suggestions!
That looks awesome !!!!! Perfect setup .... we should drink to that ! Lol cheers 🍻
Yes let's do it! Cheers!
Just picked up 2001 TJ with 3in lift. How much do i need to cut out of wheel wells if I put 38s on it
Only you would be able to make that call. Every jeep is different.
Finally finished watching. That thing looks MEAN. Are you going to do rocker guards at all? I am not that tall and have a difficult time getting in mine, so I had some tube rockers built, and then I built a cheap step that basically slides over the rockers. That said, looking forward to more!
Thanks for watching! We aren't! Going to keep this one difficult to get into lol! 36 inch vertical to the door sill!
It looks awesome guys!
Thank you!
Hello,
are you using those tires on the stock rubicon gears?
Yes, no issues at all
You had me at steel toed until day 2 sandles and shorts must be a california thing...lol..I hate those spring compressors they scare the hell out of me.You guys have came a long way on the jeep and right now im trying to contain the drooling that is frigin sick i want one.Great job guys that looks awsome. Also great job on the step by step you help make a big job easy.
Appreciate the support !
Nice video N nice place that U guys live in...you guy make a great team cool..👍.. A BIG SHOT OUT FROM THE CITY OF LONG BEACH CALI 😎....
Cheers
Where did You Guys get the aluminum wheel well liners for the TJ
From metalcloak
i noticed the yellow dot on your new tires isn't it suppose to align with the valve stem to aid in balancing the tire?
It is a start and then you dismount and remount until it balances
Awesome lift. The Jeep looks awesome
Thank you!
-12 offset or positive 12 offset ?
Sweet. That Jeep looks just plain awesome now with that lift and the 38's. You're gonna need a step ladder now to work in the engine bay now. Lol. Keep up these great videos coming. since it looks so beefy now are you going to put a good sounding exhaust on it too. I know they straight sixes sound pretty good with a mean exhaust.
Thank you!
thought You were gonna say "couldn't have done it without You" lol
Awesome TJ and very good looking. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍 Appreciate the support!
You had me at Jesus rocks
Cheers!
rear fenders? size and model ?
where can i get those flare fenders you guys have on the TJ ? 🙏
Metalcloak fenders :)
You have a link for the rims of this Jeep thanks
Hi! It's in the video titled 38s no lift!
Aloha from the quarantined state of Hawai'i on the island of Oahu, been following you for a while, that is one sick looking ride, my question is, did you have to change your gearing, because if I'm correct your stock is 3.73, but now your running 38's...
Our stock gears are 4.10 and they feel pretty decent!
Hope you're healthy!
I’m running the same 38” tires and would highly recommend re-gearing to 4.88 or lower. It’s night and day difference in daily driving and in the mountains here in Norcal. Fun video to watch!
Are you on auto or manual? Ours doesn't feel that bad!
Garage Couple it’s auto and the manuals do a better and somewhat more forgiving admittedly with bigger tires.
I suspect it comes down to the type of area one daily drives. Here in the mountains regearing is needed and when offroad it gets our low crawl speeds back for the big rocks.
Have a friend with a manual JLU on 35’s and looking at jumping to 37’s. His feeling is he will have to regear based on how the 35’s are doing but doesn’t hurt to try.
But in the end, if it’s working then concentrate on other upgrades. Regearing isn’t cheap but if locker upgrades are needed, then it may be worth it at that time.
Cool videos! Can you tell me which jack you have to lift your Jeep so you can work on it? And is it aluminum?
Yes! We got it from harbor freight
OMG the Jeep looks freakin AWESOME!!!!
Thank you for the support!
Do you guys have any plans to post any trail review videos? I live in the IE and spend a lot of time in the high desert and Big Bear with my XJ, and it would be good to know of other locations in So. Cal. I'm assuming you both live in So. Cal. Enough mods already. Let's wheel! lol
Yes we do! We have some future plans, stay tuned!
I loved the bottle jack trick. Take it from me. You’re going to want to get adjustable upper control arms. I went with Core 4x4 arms... Great job on the lift. Looks so much better..
Thank you for the comment! We have adjustable uppers, stay tuned for the install! Cheers
Sorry, I commented before video finished..
Weird question but how tall is your garage? I’m afraid mine won’t clear if I go that large
Its about 8 feet tall
Where did you get these side plates under the door. Looks very nice. Nice Vid👍🏻
It cane with the jeep! Thanks for the support
What did you regear the differential to??
We did not regear, stock rubicon gears
17:00 If the jack was removed, you could probably lower the axle a LITTLE more and the spring would fit. That, or remove the lower control arm and it would fit no problems. I've done it so many times - I HATE spring compressors!
Appreciate that! Yes. Spring compressors are awful!
@@Garagecouple They are, haha. That said, I did do springs once with a pry bar.... that ended badly. I ended up crushing my thumb - thankfully it didn't break but I did lose my whole fingernail as a result. Springs are deadly, haha!
Wow that sounds like a nightmare! Thanks for sharing and be safe!
Nice long video, I was able to get a workout in while watching. The Jeep is sitting pretty! Cheers
Haha awesome! Tried to keep it as concise as possible..appreciate the support!
Metalcloak links?
Ah,ok...I have a 2003 TJ (5spd) with 33’s with 3.73 stock gears. Would like to run 36’s next, what your recommendation on gears, the rear diff is a D44. Mahalo
It all depends on what you like. We run 35s with 3.73s and love it
On a 4.0 TJ you’re gonna need 4.56/4.88 gears with a 36” tire
Its not a "need"
It is if he still wants to be able to use 5th gear 😂
Again. Not true. Ask how we know
How do you run those tires? Do you have Dana 30s in the front and 35 rear, I wanna lift my 04 and keep 31s for maximum flex
Its a rubicon!
The Jeep looks awesome. Great job.
Thank you!
Thanks for the vid. I am going to get a 4" lift done, but I am not a DIY guy. So your vid let's me know about how much I should be paying to get it done. I love your vids, and keep up the good work. I am still interested in the rim you replaced. If it is 16" I'll gladly pay for it shipping and all. I am looking for a fifth wheel.
Hi! Thanks for the comment! It is a 16 inch rim, the moab rims which we hear are pretty hard to find. Id like to keep them as a complete set though..and shipping is pretty pricey
