12 reasons for pain under the hand of God's providence:
    1. Life is a training ground
    2. Trials are the path of purification
    3. Sufferings glorify the righteous
    4. Suffering served for the advance of the Gospel
    5. Suffering magnifies the grace of God in our lives
    7. Pain separates the hypocrites from the true believers
    8. Pain reminds us that things can go bad so that they can go good (ex. St. Joseph)
    9. Our faithful endurance of suffering shuts the mouth of the devil
    10. Pain in our lives is the education of unbelievers
    11. Suffering can come to us to prove our authenticity
    12. The endurance of suffering is the splendor of the Church
May God bless you Father Josiah.

Unfortunately, for most of us, pain is necessary to teach us how true Jesus Christ is. Otherwise in our arrogance and ever deepening spiral downward towards self satisfaction, we would not see any truth or reason for God's gifts of grace and eternity to us (which takes the spiral downward and flips it around, making it a spiral upward towards purity and Godliness for all eternity). This is the moral of the story of Revelations, by the way. The increasing scale of severity eventually culminating in cataclysm is necessary to reach the wicked, who otherwise believe they do not need God to exist, and in their hubris must be taught the very real weakness of the human condition. Eventually even incomprehensible suffering and death are attempts by God to save us from ourselves, and some people even after all of that will refuse His sovereignty. Lord, have mercy on us.

Thank you for your video the 12 purposes of pain. In my mid-60s yrs, I'm a widow & was looking for church to join in Florida. Then, rushed to ER with kidney stone. Doctor examined me, ordered X-rays, I had surgery & kidney stones were removed. Unexpected visit by X-ray tech who told me my X-rays, weird looking kidney stones & blood work - I had new diagnosis of rare inherited bone disease only inherited thru my father & from his descendants from Scotland, England & Netherlands. I was only member of my family to inherit this rare disease, though on internet, facebook I found special interest group & met other who had same disease. I feel I've joined new flock of Christians, most of who live in England. We keep in touch like a huge family. God has gifted me with new family, new church & ways to cope with this bone disease. Its called Paget's Disease of Bone.

Thank you father. Your video speaks to me. I moved to Washington state in 2011 due to an immoral relationship I was in the middle of, which ended a month after I arrived. Spent the next 4 years struggling to make it on my own out there. I am meek and introverted, with mild autism, so I was taken advantage of by numerous people out there, mostly roommates. I suffered what it was like to have an entirely spiritually dead life, no Christian friends, and no Church attendance whatsoever. However, it wasn't all bad. Shortly after I moved there, I met an incredible man who ended up being my best friend. The friendship had immoral roots because we shared in the pleasures of the world together. However, one day he woke up and decided he couldn't live that lifestyle anymore, broke up with his then boyfriend, and dedicated the rest of his life to please God (And eventually become a Monk!). I was far worse than a lukewarm Christian until this point, but his conversion to Orthodox Christianity was so incredible, it inspired me, and lead me to also feeling in my heart that Orthodox Christianity is the best possible way forward, so I began to pursue it. While I'm not where I'd like to be, I'm a lot further away than where I was before and I never want to go back to those spiritually dead days, where I didn't even know that Orthodox Christianity existed.
I tell everyone, if it weren't for my meeting and befriending of this man, I would have considered the entire 4 years of my life in Washington state, a complete waste, and my life would be far worse for it.

      1. Dont try to change yourself to please those around you. That will make you hate them more.
      2. You can’t change yourself. If you try you’ll just build up your ego and become insecure. Have faith in Christ and he will change you.
      3. Follow the hate back to its source, and you’ll find the devil. Hate him, not your neighbors. He is the ultimate cause of your misery, not them.
      4. Use the hate for the devil to fuel you to good. Recognize that there’s nothing that pisses satan off more than being humble and treating people with kindness, especially when they don’t deserve it. Thats how you get your revenge.
      Good luck.

11:39 the "wrestling school" and this topic of suffering coincides with Jacob wrestling with a Man who is God in Genesis 32: 24-32.
Jacob ran from Esau, deceived his father and ran from Laban.
God was teaching Jacob to stop running. Face your problems to receive the blessing. Do not let go of the Man who you're wrestling. Instead, continue to wrestle, fight, don't give in. In the process, you will suffer greatly (Jacob's hip socket out of place with one touch and walked with a limp for the rest of his days) but; your reward will be great!
Jacob the supplanter whose life was struggle, was then blessed and named Israel, one who prevails with God. His character was completely changed then on.

Father I have been exploring orthodoxy for about a year now, strictly in the online sphere. I can feel my heart growing hungrier and hungrier as time goes on. I am 27 years old with a wife and three kids, we both grew up Mormon. My wife is now growing more tired of this and I want to bring my family to an Orthodox Church but I fear my wife will be shocked by the imagery and style of worship that is present in orthodoxy. Chants, icons, prostrations, etc. Do you have any suggestions on how I can prepare her for this?
    Thank you!😊

A very hard saying. The only thing that I ever wanted is purportedly only in this life.
It's fine if my story is dismissed.
I don't want to be bad leaven or a distraction.
I was always alone my whole life in a dysfunctional home full of misery and eerieness that even catalyzed sleep paralysis.
I always dreamed of eventually being a good steward of my dream girl.
I inadvertently obtained Her randomly, not being ready, and on very prodigal terms and setting.
Losing Her finally seared into me the value of virtue.
I have no idea what in the hell I could possibly contribute to God or even myself now other than survival and burning in regrets and worry of tomorrow.
I don't think I'm innately eligible to trust God even though things have gotten better.
I know who I naturally am.

Father Josiah, isn't that abusive? The painful discipline... imposition... whatever you want to call it, of a God who's intent to hurt you immensely so you can love him and thank you for it? No matter how many times I hear it or read it, the insistence of pain on the children of God sounds a bit unhinged and definitely scary. He is the God of the universe and there's nothing you can do about it. He will hurt you on purpose and we're to be grateful? I think Mother Teresa was quoted to say, "If God treats his friends like this, it is no wonder our Lord has so few of them." And......I'm want to agree with her! Help us understand, Father.

Think of it like this… When you take away your child’s candy, or tell them it’s bedtime, or force them to sit down and do their homework, you are causing them to suffer. The child does not understand through this suffering they are becoming a responsible and capable person. Sometimes the child may be angry at their parent for that moment. But as the child grows into an adult, he or she understands why their parents did what they did. Suffering is needed to grow and to become more capable.

Forgive me, but the Bible says that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. How many times in the gospels do we read these words: "He healed them all." Perhaps one of the most inspiring texts comes from Acts: "Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed." (Acts 5:16, NKJV). If there is little power to heal the sick in the materialistic West, it is good to know that there are lessons to learn from the suffering that is inevitable due to man's ignorance and rebellion.

The teacher hits the student harder and the student accepts as he can see the finality - being a champion. It is something that is palpable but suffering without a proof that your suffering leads anywhere is just suffering in vain. Probably believing in something beyond us, like God, makes the suffering more bearable than vice-versa. I'm still baffled by this subject and to simply accept this version, based on some unproved ideas of some long dead people, does not work for me. Still searching....

Jesus came to teach us how to overcome the evils of this world. Suffering for Truth. God doesn't make us suffer. Sometimes he allows it, like in Jobs case.. He shows us how to be more than conquerors over evil. Read the scriptures and you'll see the big picture. He also says " I discipline the children I love". We suffer the evils of this world because we defend Jesus's name and Truth.
