It's way more work if you drop the engine. Usually we only lower the subframe without disconnecting it from the control arms. Then we disconnect the water pump/thermostat and move it slightly out of the way without unplugging the hoses. Basically same way you'd do when you only replace the oil pan gasket. You can move the coolant reservoir and vacuum canisters without disconnecting the hises/lines either. That's the flat rate way and not hourly way in doing it.

Funny that i just finished my turbo replacement few days ago. still trying to figure out what to do for the tune. I did from the bottom in garage with jack stand and top engine support. I would say it's safer(less old nasty parts to break when removing them) and easier doing from bottom. The most struggle i had was fitting the rear inlet hose in. Put TON of grace on the inlet hose!!!!!!! It will make you life much easier. Other than that it's very straight forward unbolting stuff and bolting them back. I was brave enough to use the manifold gaskets that came with the turbos tho lol.

I'm in the middle of an engine out e92 N54 build right now with stg2 hybrid turbos. It is 400% easier to work with the turbo's with the N54 out of the car. The huge catch is that when you yank the engine out you will find a dozen things you'll need/want to also replace or upgrade while the engine is out. Good luck. I'll enjoy seeing how this all turns out.

Rough idle is an indication (usually) of leaky injectors. Do you have index 12's? I would highly recommend getting them as fuel can leak past your piston rings thin your oil and cause your bearings to wear. I suggest getting your oil tested or simply smelling it to see if it smells like gas.

Leave subframe in. Pull engine to the right. Only put 2 studs in on rear turbo before installing turbo otherwise the turbo hits steering shaft trying to get it over studs. New studs are about 5-7mm longer than original studs on my 07 335. Have fun.

Drop the engine. Be careful of the 90deg bends on the AC lines at the condenser if tying up the AC components they bend easy and will damage the lines., Trust me😉.
The time you will spend cursing and screwing around with trying to do the turbos from underneath, you will be drinking beers and have less cuts and aggravation on the engine out.

I know which way I would go, EVEN at home...
Drop the lump, on the subframe..access is EVERYTHING.
-I wouldn't undo struts at top though, but at bottom, takes a few minutes more, but on reassembly aligning everything, including struts, you won't have enough hands!!..sooo many things to watch/align -struts can move heaps remember, so unbolt at bottom, wherever you happiest they will come undone easy..think I would aim to leave hubs, abs wire, calipers all attached too(less to break!)
    Just will make life easier
    IMHO..
Oh, careful on steering, thinking air bag/steering wheel control cable damage!..and steering angle sensor alignment...

Remember if it gets too hard you can always drop the engine mid way through relatively easy. Especially because most of the videos on TH-cam are lhd this would be great for the rhd community. Do you still think you wish you got the bigger 19T ones, are they equivalent to say a Stage 3 or 4 ??. Or are the 17T's just fine equal to a stage 2 ?? Pros and Cons If you would guess ?? And Thanks for your channel !!

    • @ZeroTo60Tube

I would say yes, purely due to one of the wheels being slightly bigger. The bigger the better flow and the 17ts do not feel laggy at all. However, i have notice a few more complaints about 19ts online. It could be purely coincidence. But just an observation. If you was buying again, i would probably get the larger ones. I think run them at sub 25psi and you should have a pretty reliable N54.

Do what you're comfortable with, if you're comfortable doing it from the bottom then do it that way. A BMW mechanic may be able to drop the whole engine in 90 min as they are used to doing it. It may take you significantly longer and open up a can of worms!

This is what im thinking. It just took me an hour to disconnect the battery, as the battery compartment was full of water... ha

Definitely dont mind a bit of monster... Rockstars we on sale at the petrol station.... However you see TJ Hunt (biggest monster fan boy ever) picked up the NOS sponsorship. I didnt realise NOS energy drinks were part of monster. Have you ever tried NOS?

@@ZeroTo60Tube also, just curious because i was about to purchase some... when you said there has been issues with the turbo out pipe upgrades referring to other after market ones, what were the issues do you remember? and would that be referring to the VTT outlet pipes by any chance? they seem to be all i can find for RHD setup. They are a smaller 1.5" diameter but still better than the stock i imagine? thanks in advance.
