Ever since, I’ve been following north Melbourne (it’s been a horrible experience) but I really enjoy the sport a lot. I live in Germany and enjoy waking up on weekends to watch some footy. I'm a North Melbourne supporter, and I feel your frustration. With one game left during the regular season, it's looking like we're going to be wooden spooners for the third year running. (For anyone not from Australia, getting the "Wooden Spoon" is when a team finishes last in the competition. It is just a term. There is no actual physical wooden spoon awarded.) Chin up. We will get better, and you'll know you made the right choice to support the Kangaroos.
Love the updated version :) Being a brit and never been to Australia ..... I freaking love the AFL, I happily get up at 3am here to watch a Bombers match or the Grand Final. An Aussie friend staying with me put a match on and I watched with her, I was hooked :) I will go to Australia and the MCG before I die to watch a match in person :)
Always wanted an updated version from the American one but, although this is more in-depth explanations which is good, it dropped the part where it was compared to other international sports leagues which I think was a mistake. If this is for non-aussies to understand the game, it's good to compare aspects of our game that is similar to one they might understand. (e.g the size of the field, the bounce in the middle like a throw-up in basketball, etc)
The original video is not an "American one". It was made here and used the voice of a guy (Steve Salisbury) who is from the USA, but lives (lived?) in Australia and who appears regularly on Australian radio like Sport SEN in Melbourne.
Well done. This up to date version addresses some of the confusion of the old "What is AFL". Maybe an additional explanation of how old Aussie rules is might help stop the clueless from saying it's a "copycat" game. And I did like the size comparison part of the old vid. Oh well. Like it! Stopped watching NFL long ago, along with MLB. I had zero interest in watching spectator sports when I stopped playing them. About 17 yrs old, I'm 54 now. But I could maybe get into this. Gonna put on a pre recorded game now and see if I can get into it.
Very nice update. Perhaps a video explaining basic team strategy, throw ins and kicks after the siren would be a great followup. (Something like a footya2z vid)
I think this version is going to be a lot more understandable for people who have never seen the game. It now specifies that you can't throw it, that any player can play any role and explains the scores properly. Also, glad to see that the Grand Final crowd is now called 100,000 instead of "90,000+".
There are better explanations in this one than the last one. But still one big mistake, bounce the ball WITHIN 15 metres, otherwise they think you have to do it on the dot
As a Canuck 🇨🇦 I use to watch this as kid. But I watched game a month go and it got me back into it. So I came here for a refresher on the rules. I would love to see a game live!
I saw this sport a few years ago as an American, and I always go back to it because it’s such a cool sport! I haven’t really picked a team yet (considering either the Cats, Eagles or Kangaroos just based on their logos) but it’s so cool to see the kicking power and the endurance these players have! I love watching it!
This is why I always thought of Australia not just as an unknown island in the middle of nowhere, but as an independent very far away planet where people have sports where 99% of the world knows nothing about it
Such a specific comment, but the commentators for this video are really good. Their inflection and delivery is enthusiastic without being annoying which is tough to do!
I wish they mentioned how old it is. That gives the sport even more legitimacy, to be seen as an equal to sports like soccer and rugby. A lot of international people think it’s just a modern derivative.
that's a pretty Accurate View; CS in the US here; ESPN used to show it in the "early days" then dropped the ball on the Coverage, and Networks failed to re-visit and articulate the rules as Cable & the Web expanded; Same w/ Rugby in the US, though there are Pockets of teams & some Television; I think the Nuances are the Movement via "Required Ball Bouncing", Passing & Kicking; I've actually caught back on to it w/ the Women & their fragmented history, merging leagues, via Google / Wiki & the AFL site, which is well crafted btw. And to Your Point, w/ o having all the Facts, the Men have prestige /established History that is left out of the Video, w/ "direct" evidence in the Clips of the Speed and Skill, creating a Thirst to get up to speed. There was a Show on Channel 7 or one of the Aussie Networks w/ all -time greats in Football, Cricket etc. Including Top Footballer ARCHIE THOMPSON as to which sport has the most appeal in Australia / New Zealand; Toss out names of the biggest AFL's Legends and I'm sure whoever you say was on that program (See Part 2)
As a die hard American football fan who’s here to expand my knowledge of international sports, I see there’s one thing that’s identical between the NFL and the AFL…. The fans hate the refs unconditionally! 😂
From Northeastern Pennsylvania -- love the new explainer! Props for including the women, and especially for including Sheed From The Boundary -- the moment that claimed me as an Eagles fan.
AFL should have mentioned and shown the evolution of a footballer from the indigenous kids playing the game on an island or in the outback to the clubs in just about every country town and city suburbs. Footy is in the blood of our kids so that even if they never play professionally they turn up to their AFL team game and either sponsor, play or support their local team … the breeding ground of Australia’s game is what makes it a passion.
Hi 😀. It's hard for me to suggest another team other than the one that I love. But it happens to be the only one that has a male player from the USA, Mason Cox. ⬛⬜⬛⬜⬛ But I am going to inform you about the AFL. 9 of the 18 teams are from Melbourne. In a few years there is going to be a new team from Tasmania. Port Adelaide is the only team from another State League, and it's history goes back to 1870. Sydney Swans are also an old club and they were a founding club of the league in Victoria. The Brisbane Lions are a merger of a Melbourne foundation club, the Fitzroy Lions and the Brisbane Bears. The Brisbane Lions first played together in the 1997 season. And that was the same year as the Port Adelaide Power in the AFL. Geelong Cats are from another town in State of Victoria and they are like a country team. They are the opposite of the city slickers. 😂 Maybe you can go for the Gold Coast Suns, they could use the fans. 🔴🟡🔵 I have got you a link to a recent game. CS from NC in the US: I haven't Researched it for a bit, but Rugby has Pockets in the US w/ Clubs, w/ some TV Coverage of the UK/ Int'l scene, and there's traction in Ireland w/ Aussie rules, w/ a few of the Women playing Down Under, given the Prestige of it there, equivalent to Football (Soccer) where a Top US player goes to the best Leagues in the UK / Europe or and/ or the prospects there try to boost their stock to play for the "elite" Clubs; Not sure if there's any small Leagues in the US & Canada developing talent, but it's an added avenue to get kids off the streets: I can see some serious athleticism from Both versions of Football and applying it as effectively if not better in AFL than Rugby

@SilverTouch NBA can you count 15 metres while sprinting?
I’m American and this is super helpful!
This looks so fun! I would go to Australia just for this! 👌🏼
As a Canuck 🇨🇦 I use to watch this as kid. But I watched game a month go and it got me back into it. So I came here for a refresher on the rules.
I would love to see a game live!
Great video, just a shame the UK sports channels somehow have no idea how to market it and it's treated like Rugby 2.0, can't ever find it on tv
Love the AFL from Glasgow Scotland 🏴 🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘
I’m an American who stumbled across AFL highlights while trying to get into Rugby. I think I might prefer footy more
I saw this sport a few years ago as an American, and I always go back to it because it’s such a cool sport! I haven’t really picked a team yet (considering either the Cats, Eagles or Kangaroos just based on their logos) but it’s so cool to see the kicking power and the endurance these players have! I love watching it!
this video is perfectly put together. Credit to the producers and the AFL. This is the greatest sport in the world.
As a Brit, I reckon that this is the best form of football there is!
This is why I always thought of Australia not just as an unknown island in the middle of nowhere, but as an independent very far away planet where people have sports where 99% of the world knows nothing about it
And then there’s Australia’s wildlife.. it gives me the Willies..
Once again, this is the better version people should show others. About time the AFL put some decent explanation on TH-cam. Well done AFL.
Cool, updated version. Any international versions on the agenda including national leagues?
Such a specific comment, but the commentators for this video are really good. Their inflection and delivery is enthusiastic without being annoying which is tough to do!
I watch it every Friday morning @5 am here in North America
I was confused seeing AfL playing in my TV but I love the explanation
I wish they mentioned how old it is. That gives the sport even more legitimacy, to be seen as an equal to sports like soccer and rugby. A lot of international people think it’s just a modern derivative.
that's a pretty Accurate View; CS in the US here; ESPN used to show it
in the "early days" then dropped the ball on the Coverage, and Networks
failed to re-visit and articulate the rules as Cable & the Web expanded;
Same w/ Rugby in the US, though there are Pockets of teams
& some Television; I think the Nuances are the Movement via "Required
Ball Bouncing", Passing & Kicking; I've actually caught back on to it
w/ the Women & their fragmented history, merging leagues, via
Google / Wiki & the AFL site, which is well crafted btw.
And to Your Point, w/ o having all the Facts, the Men have
prestige /established History that is left out of the Video,
w/ "direct" evidence in the Clips of the Speed and Skill, creating
a Thirst to get up to speed. There was a Show on Channel 7 or
one of the Aussie Networks w/ all -time greats in Football, Cricket
etc. Including Top Footballer ARCHIE THOMPSON as to which sport
has the most appeal in Australia / New Zealand; Toss out names
of the biggest AFL's Legends and I'm sure whoever you say was
on that program (See Part 2)
Ohh I love this game💜❤, I'm learning and playing it for 2 years and I'm hopeful to play as an international player this year. so i need your prayers🙏🙏
Can you show the umpires this video?
🤣🤣
Fucken gold man
No! may come as a shock
As a die hard American football fan who’s here to expand my knowledge of international sports, I see there’s one thing that’s identical between the NFL and the AFL…. The fans hate the refs unconditionally! 😂
Lol
I LOVE THIS WATCHING FROM LEBANON . I STARTED WATCHING AFL SINCE 2009 . LIKE IT SINCE
I’m from Germany I never knew something like this existed, until I went to Melbourne.
Did you enjoy it and have you picked a team?
Now THAT is some good football! What a game. Hope to see one someday. They really need more of it on youtube.
I hope other people can love our beautiful sport
From Northeastern Pennsylvania -- love the new explainer! Props for including the women, and especially for including Sheed From The Boundary -- the moment that claimed me as an Eagles fan.
Bit corny but did a better job at explaining the basics than the original.
To much woke influence went into this
💯
Yeah i wasnt a fan of the added writing and reaction noises kinda feels like its aimed at kids mostly
@@veganath define woke in your words and how it relates to this video. Is it a bit too modern for your like?
@@veganath cringed when they had to include AFLW and the Indigenous flag in the crowd.
Glad I found this video. I’m an American who just started watching and got a bit confused. Go Lions!
Woke 😅😅😅😅

Well thanks for this. I was looking for an AFL to support/follow and this intro to the rules is a great primer.
Love this new AFL instruction video!
It's good to see an updated version of this 🥺🥺✨
This looks 100000 times better than American football.
As an American, this looks wayyyy better than our football. Might start watching it tbh. Aussies suggest a team i should follow.
Hi 😀. It's hard for me to suggest another team other than the one that I love. But it happens to be the only one that has a male player from the USA, Mason Cox.
⬛⬜⬛⬜⬛
But I am going to inform you about the AFL.
Maybe you can go for the Gold Coast Suns, they could use the fans. 🔴🟡🔵
I have got you a link to a recent game. Please watch the video in the link.

New fan.... from the US, this is a totally exciting sport!!! Kicking, running, punch passing?, tackling, huge field, lots of energy... so much skill and endurance involved.... I love it!!! American football? BORING!!!! I am hooked!!!
Welcome aboard. Have you picked a team?
@@mattdean9938 A few teams actually . Brisbane Lions ,North Melbourne Kangaroos and Geelong Cats..... have only been able to find highlights of the games, but still having a blast watching!!!
Do you watch it on FS1 FS2 or FSP?
@@mattdean9938 Just watched a couple of games on FS2 yesterday.... West Coast Eagles was an exciting game!!!
@@jimsherlock6015 Go for Freo
ok, as an American, the speccy is legit awesome and I wish we had something like it in American Football.
Love this game from 🇮🇹
Undoubtedly the fittest and most complete all round athletes of any ball sport.
Nice to see a Tipungwuti tackle one last time. A Rachelle Martin tackle is the next best thing.
Looks fun, played on the same cricket grounds I'm in love with
Thanks for not including Kelli Underwood in any commentary
About time you explained the scoring, as every reaction I've watched of the old video people still didn't get it.
The physicality the shots and the goofyness made me enjoy this sport. WE ARE GEELONG THE GREATEST TEAM OF ALL WE ARE GEELONG WE'RE ALWAYS ON THE BALL. Let's do the perfect run this year
Good chance for a flag this year, Cat.
@@jameschristiansson3137 VERY good as it turned out. :P
I was introduced to this sport during the pandemic and let me tell ya …10 min into a match I was already hook with the sport it was awesome 👏, confusing but really exciting to see something new
Looks like an incredibly fun sport. No wonder it's so popular. Too bad we don't have it here in the U.S..
Fr Fr 💪💪💪
USAFL. It's a thing, check out youtube and a team near you.
CS from NC in the US: I haven't Researched it for a bit,
but Rugby has Pockets in the US w/ Clubs, w/ some TV Coverage
of the UK/ Int'l scene, and there's traction in Ireland w/ Aussie rules,
w/ a few of the Women playing Down Under, given the Prestige of it there,
equivalent to Football (Soccer) where a Top US player goes to the best
Leagues in the UK / Europe or and/ or the prospects there try to boost
their stock to play for the "elite" Clubs; Not sure if there's any
small Leagues in the US & Canada developing talent,
but it's an added avenue to get kids off the streets:
I can see some serious athleticism from Both versions
of Football and applying it as effectively
if not better in AFL than Rugby
Never heard of this one as a European but it already looks so much more interesting than what America calls "Football".
this seems pretty cool. Its like a mix of american football and regularr football
Just got my first Sherrin footy ball I’m exited to start playing
Great!! But can someone please explain the determination of the angle that umpies decide when a player is taking a set shot for goal from a pocket?
The player has to take their kick from a point along a straight (imaginary) line between the middle of the goals, and where they marked the ball.
Draw a straight line from the centre of the goal through the mark. Unless the mark is within the goal square then you get to kick straight on.
@@jackaspley3283 thanks Jack
@@arrgghh1555 thanks Arrgghh, Pies supporter?
From the mark they move back along the line to the goal
As a half North Korean and Syrian, I absolutely love this sport - I will one day visit Australia and bring by my government!
Sure but your government might have some trouble with our native wildlife. Let's not forget that our own government lost the war against our native bird the Emu.
Good update and especially pleasing to include the AFLW and show footage of our awesome women!
Of worldwide importance AFLW.
I became interested in this game when I was goofing around on my ESPN App one night and learned there was an AFL team called the Cats. I started watching a few Cats games on TH-cam, so I decided to come here and see how this game works. If I visit Australia someday, I'd like to go to a Cats game and a Sydney Roosters or South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league game.
Some American college football stadiums also have capacities of greater than 100,000.
