The crazy thing is that beauty standards always come from what we don’t have. For instance, in North Korea, in which there is a scarcity of food, more body fat would mean a better standard of living. But in the US, where junk food is actually cheaper than healthy food (and due to the fact that exercise takes time and work), obesity can be a sign of poverty. A skinnier, fit body would be a sign of a higher standard of living.
Edit: It would seem that I should acknowledge that North Korean "fashion" still favors slim women... however to the average North Korean those models still don't represent health and prosperity. And anyways, who, in NK, has time to look at models? Not the average citizens. Only the ruling elite, and - more importantly - foreign visitors.

@@matas253 It's more like many are working 2 - 3 parttime jobs, and their jobs are more likely to be manual labor than desk jobs.....they come home and are to exhausted to cook. Also, especially in big cities with high cost of living, many poor people can't afford ovens or microwaves, so they have to buy take-out or read-to-go food. Lack of education in nutrition and how to cook also plays a part.

@@mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489 Um, you are proving her point. She said everybody in NK is slim and underweight because of lack of food. A normal slim model (which is probably still underweight) IS considered heavy by NK standards because most people are starving there.

This makes a lot of sense... psychologically, what we actually see as "attractive" or "beautiful", is what we subconsciously associate with wealth/security....it takes Money to look like a movie star...it takes Money and free time (again usually requires money) to stay fit and eat healthy...thus our "beauty standards"...some places it takes money to stay pale, some it takes money to tan...old paintings have Chubby ladies in them for the same reason she thought chubby was attractive, because those with wealth could afford to eat like that back then. Americans have all shades, shapes, sizes, all styles, etc. Most men that are real men appreciate a woman for whatever she dares to reveal, that is, personality, voice, shape, color of eyes, skin color, texture, etc.
The only problem is immature men or women that never grew up and try to imitate mama suggestions, until they are independent.
We have many cultures, religions, politics, educstions we can choose to appreciate and follow. Ms Yeohmi you are beautiful because Americans appreciate the beauty that choice of freedom you have choosen to live, and your story is that of a beautiful soul (no pun intented). We love women that are brave, gutsy, and achievers!
Continue to enjoy your life in America and continue to speak of important thing you deem necessary.

yes because of the cheapness and amount of cheap bad food, westerners are heavy and eat bad compared to asian countries. Here we consider being slim and skinny healthy since many of us are not. I think she knows already that she is good looking just by the way she dresses now. I just love people who get out of their own countries to experience other stuff and like it, not only those in oppressive countries, but any country. Americans who go to Europe and like the differences, those who come to america and like stuff, etc. Not every place has good things, but they are there. And there are many things we like about the east. Many westerners admire the asian/east educational system which is more rigid more like what american schools used to be. You have less freedoms in those schools, less activities, but better education. Some good, some bad.
