Hey Jarrod. I've got an interesting perspective for you: take Anderson since summer 2014 - when it appears he finally overcame the slightly hushed-up ankle injury/niggle he had: 255 wickets @ 20.8 in all tests of which: 103 wickets @ 24.4 away from home. Firstly: 250ish wickets is as many wickets as constitute entire careers of some of the greats (Joel Garner, Michael Holding and some others). So this is no piffling little window of data. Secondly: what? 24.4 average away? But we all know JIMMY IS NO GOOD EXCEPT IN ENGLISH CONDITIONS/DUKE BALL! Hmmm - clearly we were a bit wrong. Let's compare that with Steyn's last 250ish wickets from 2010: 254 wickets @ 22.4 in all tests of which: 96 wickets @ 26.8 away from home. What? Dale is worse than Jimmy when you look at their last 250ish wickets - both all matches and away - by around 2 runs per wicket. How is this so? We all know that Dale is 'clearly' the better bowler and what's more he can do it away when Jimmy can't. Hmmm - maybe we need to rethink this. OK - looks like Jimmy had 2 careers: early and late. Early was ok. Late was magnificent especially given what load was placed on him. And Dale's figures slightly slipped - not much, just a bit, from his early unstoppableness to the end of his career. Injuries? I don't know much about him and that may well be the case. I think the overall numbers are clear: Dale was a better bowler over their careers. But Jimmy has just got better and better, learned to bowl away, learned to work the batsmen out and that post-2014 phase ranks with the greatest bowlers of all time. And he needs credit - a bit like Federer - for working very hard to keep fit and stave off injury to allow that to happen. This is a slightly artificial view - based mainly on the 3rd hand 'inside knowledge' of an acquaintance of mine who is a Lancashire CCC member (just rumour or is there truth in it? What do I know....) (PS I'm both Jimmy and Dale fan-boy. How can you not love these guys?)
dale's number were indeed affected by injuries. he was suffering breakdowns in middle of games, his pace started to reduce and ultimately he retired. steyn had a blockbuster start to his career but a painful ending whereas jimmy probably had a painful start of career but is gonna end it as blockbuster.
Very good take. Love both as well. I think anderson is very underrated and gets a lot of unfair criticism. Steyn on the other hand rarely gets mentioned
A great and balanced analysis. However, a couple of years on, the average is now below 26 and the economy rate below 2.8. I'd say an important point with this analysis is "watch this space" as it is still a work in progress. Who knows, Anderson could conceivably still be lowering those stats for another three or four years, by which time his "post getting great" career in itself would be one of the biggest in test cricket. The final analysis can only be made at that point imo.
I came here to make a similar point. 2022 and start of 2023 are shaping up to be amongst the best years of his career. To be bowling with that pace (he's now comfortably quicker than Broad, who I think may retire first), accuracy and skill at 40 years old and closing in on 700 wickets is unbelievable.
I would be interested to know how Anderson and Steyn stack up in grouped ages, i.e 20-25Years old, 25-30YO, 30-35yo & 35+YO, anyone know? I would guess Jimmy might pip steyn as they have got older (30+ or 35+)?
Steyn better young, Anderson far far far better old. Anderson’s peak is post 34, Steyn was done at that. This says nothing about Steyn though, his career had a normal trajectory. Anderson is a true freak. Perhaps the only great player who is significantly better at 38 than he was at 28.
Steyn injuries took their toll on him as he aged. Jimmy is lucky he didn’t have the injuries Steyn had and in the severity suffered. It’s not really a fair comparison post 33/34. Steyn could have improved for all we know without injuries.
@@reddragon5483 experience does that to people. They never lose it in my mind. Their bodies just can’t keep up with the demands of the sport. Hi Jarrod! Just came across your channel and watched a slew of your videos. I'm a big Dale Steyn fan but it tough finding anything to do with his career path and since you analyzed Jimmy so amazingly, is there any chance you'd do one for the one of the greatest to ever run up to the crease and reign terror? Awesome channel!
Glad that you came up with this video. Always rated Anderson as an exceptional bowler. Sad thing is that whenever he comes up with a good performance, there comes the comparison with McGrath and Steyn.
5:14 can anyone please enlighten me as to what the "liquid manure" is? Googling tells me very little about it, except that it changed cricket, but how?
I know it's related to the pitch for sure. I'm trying to understand what liquid manure is (is it manure that has been watered down? Or is it pee?). Also, what effect did the application of this liquid manure have on the pitches? Did it create uneven bounce, or just made the area stink and thus unattractive for batters? Or did it do something else? Just my curiosity I guess :)
Just a fan question : How do you manage to get so much empirical data and also deliver that like it's a novel story. Just amazing quality. If i were you this video would be 5 hrs long.
Steyns struggles against left handers were difficult to explain. I actually watched his first test live and nobody would have guessed he’d go on to become a modern great after seeing Trescothic smash him around with disdain. As soon as the right handers came in it was a different story. The swing, the seam, the pace was amazing. He was bowling 80mph at the left handers and 90mph at the right handers. It looked like when he was bowling at the left handers his whole action and run up were wrong. he did well to somewhat even it out by the end of his career. But I will say this: Steyn was a great bowler...at right handers. In an era with so many left handed openers this is a relevant point.
They are both natural outswing bowlers, it makes sense that they would both struggle more than others. That they both worked that out and went on to be elite says a lot for both of them. But obviously Boult or McGrath with a natural ball that leaves the left handers would have a superior record.
@@JarrodKimberYT oh Jimmy’s amazing at left handers. Loads of outswingers are good at them. Steyn just struggled in general at them. It’s like his whole action was for a right hander then at the last minute he’d push the ball over with his wrist, as though he was bowling down the leg side to a right hander. Imagine if he’s played in the old days with fewer lefties...average 18😂
@@JarrodKimberYT overall maybe...compare old Jimmy against peak Steyn and there’s a huge difference. And especially against top order left handers. Good point. Anderson’s record should have all the wickets removed whenever the ball swung at all. Or the ball had a seem on it. Or the ball was red. Just my opinion, but Dale Steyn, wow he didn’t need any of these things😂
This one came from when he took the wickets in Sri Lanka, and the same old debate came up about how good he is. And I did a tweet about how he and Hadlee had a similar pattern, and once that happened, I kinda followed the rabbit.
A bowler England never got the best out of was Devon Malcom. He was still playing county cricket and get up to 90 MPH when he was 40. He was unlucky, ask the Australians in 1995. The South Africans in 1994 when they made the mistake of hitting him on the head.
Mr. Kimber, I am a novice left arm pacer with a physique like Zaheer Khan (I am from his state). Why don't you create a video on County Cricket or swing bowling or pitch science. Those are some topics I want to know.
Why is that we exclusively look at careers numbers and never a players peaks? I understand that due to the the mismatched schedule of test playing nations it's hard as the big three play in a year what's other nations play in 3 (hyperbole). Cricket also needs era adjusted stats to compare players as overall numbers don't really tell the whole story.
I don’t know why we don’t do more peak analysis in cricket. But I guess it’s because average is such a good judge of a players worth. Even if it’s not perfect.
The problem with Anderson playing in the modern era and for so long is that he now gets wildly over praised… he’s good, but closer to Bob Willis good. I’d put him on par with Willis, perhaps slightly above because of his longevity.
Anderson's detractors (not saying you are one) make it all sound so simple. All you have to do is roll teams over on green ones in England with minimal effort and be semi-competent away from home to build a career as an England quick. If that was the case Woakes and Finn (no disrespect) would have 300+ and 400+ test wickets each. If you were picking a dream test 11 at the minute for any conditions, the question would be who is your third seamer to go with Anderson and Cummins.
Be like Jimmy. Bowled one the worst first over on debut. And now the highest wicket taker seamer to ever land on planet earth. If that is not called one of the best story from ash to brilliance then what could will be the real question. He is the eiptamy of fast bowling fitness and he can play even more and when he will retire he will retire in style and he is a legend. And once a great man said never compare legends.
As much as I love Kapil paaji, with an average of 29 I dont think he is close to either Steyn or Anderson. But I will tell u what in terms of longevity and fitness, Kapil Dev is king. Except for the last 3 years of his career he was never out of shape
Kimber you have scarred me for life with that pic of Anderson, Broad and Cook holding bats naked. 😂 Wth were they thinking! But I agree, Anderson is so underrated, he should have been a NZ player. Edit: James Anderson on posing naked for a magazine: "if there are any gay cricketers they should feel confident enough to come out because I don't think there is any homophobia in cricket." All jokes aside, what a wonderful man, kudos to him!
I hope England play Jimmy til he’s 50 at home and just make green seamers for him. Finish with 1000 wickets and give you lot something to really cry about. Also notice you never hear this lot waxing emotional about how Dale Steyn is a ‘great white shark’ when any other bowler is mentioned. It’s just about hating on Jimmy and England, let’s be honest, you’re not even subtle about. Unless of course the next time you mention Ambrose or McGrath or anybody else we can expect an exhaustive one eyed statistical break down of how great Dale Steyn is? Didn’t think so.
I don't think it's much of a big fact but one thing about steyn was that he was a killer white ball baller too, i think it does impact your red ball game when you have to switch lengths in middle of the tour,or play t20 and ipl and hence have to invest time in developing other deliveries like a slower one, yorker and bouncer etc
Good vid but you failed to mention two huge aspects of this debate which is really disappointing: 1) Anderson was robbed of his PRIME years as an athlete and bowler by a poor selection strategy by the England selectors and injuries (2003-2010) 2) Steyn was part of much stronger SA teams than the England teams Anderson was/is part of. This inevitably will have affected their performances.
Great analysis. It's amazing the way Anderson has gotten better as he has gotten older, what he's doing now at his age the only other player I remember doing something similar was Hadlee, truly phenomenal. Take out those first 6 years and he averages low 20s like all the other greats. Still after all this I still think Steyn was better as well as Akram,Marshall, Hadlee etc, I'd guess Anderson is top 20 all time though maybe around 15.
I don't think England can bring their own players.... The whole team is amalgamation pf different countries 😂😂😂.... Broad and Anderson last home made geniuses ❤️
Anderson since 2010 is a completely different bowler, An ATG McGrath, Walsh, Pollock, Donald, Wasim are also probably better than anderson though. Not only steyn

Pointless comparing full career stats with Jimmy. English fans know he only developed half way through his career. You take Jimmy’s last third of his career (50 games) his average is 20.67 - better than Steyn who has been around 22 his whole career.
*Out of 120 test together Jimmy and Broad were wicketless for first time in Ahmedabad DN Pink test, he plays great at green tracks but in subcontinent he is ok*
Weird that he has all those other wickets in India and helped win the first Test. But you must be right, him and Bumrah are terrible because they didn't take a wicket. No batsman has ever failed, IIRC
@@JarrodKimberYT I agree with ur few other videos but this tour Broad and Jimmy didn't do much tbh. When they play in England they do miracles. They are game changing bowlers but neither this time nor earlier in India they didn't do much whether u agree or not. You know how bad wicket played after 1 st innings in 1st Test Eng has failed to cross 200 after that. If there wasn't much in track why didn't Eng score more in 2nd innings? You crediting first test to Jimmy but u didn't see how wicket exploded after 2 days but India played pretty well Eng didn't they made hay when wicket was rubber.
A touch dismissive of Jimmy's own role in his longevity. Even with the help from the ECB that's his remarkable skill. Steyn deserves his own video, not roped in with Anderson.
Another similarity between Anderson and batsman - both are scarred for life. Batman with his parents death Anderson with average away record against his world class home record

4:50 Dale Steyn drops the ball dead lmfsao
Anderson's detractors (not saying you are one) make it all sound so simple. All you have to do is roll teams over on green ones in England with minimal effort and be semi-competent away from home to build a career as an England quick. If that was the case Woakes and Finn (no disrespect) would have 300+ and 400+ test wickets each.
If you were picking a dream test 11 at the minute for any conditions, the question would be who is your third seamer to go with Anderson and Cummins.
it is weird that all those other English born seamers don't do it far more.
It's important to note that despite that horrible first over vs Zimbabwe, he still took a 5-fer on debut.
If someone doesn't subscribe it either means 1) They don't like cricket or 2)They don't know about the subscribe button.
Or they belevie that the earth is flat.
I'd say he is iron man. Genius!
Kapil dev being a bowling all rounder still keeps up with these modern day legends
As much as I love Kapil paaji, with an average of 29 I dont think he is close to either Steyn or Anderson. But I will tell u what in terms of longevity and fitness, Kapil Dev is king. Except for the last 3 years of his career he was never out of shape
@@beefy1986 I mean a bowling average of 29 in India is a very different story. It’s like a bowling of average of 25 in SENA.
@@nooneknows19 Hadlee has a lower average in the subcontinent than him. So no. I am not denying Kapil Dev's greatness. But stats do matter
Please give us rest of the Justice League
I feel like Morne Morkel would be Aquaman for what it is worth.
@@JarrodKimberYT Ellyse perry is definitely wonder woman😎
Kimber you have scarred me for life with that pic of Anderson, Broad and Cook holding bats naked. 😂 Wth were they thinking!
But I agree, Anderson is so underrated, he should have been a NZ player.
Edit: James Anderson on posing naked for a magazine: "if there are any gay cricketers they should feel confident enough to come out because I don't think there is any homophobia in cricket."
All jokes aside, what a wonderful man, kudos to him!
This is how men look
@@JarrodKimberYT indeed
He started ok in ODIs I guess. Remember watching him taking 4 wickets twice in 2003 wc.
Yeah he was a very good white ball bowler early on.
This is the best Explanation of James Anderson I have ever seen
Before this I have seen is either Jimmy biased or Steyn biased
Btw I Steyn Gun fan
Good vid but you failed to mention two huge aspects of this debate which is really disappointing:
1) Anderson was robbed of his PRIME years as an athlete and bowler by a poor selection strategy by the England selectors and injuries (2003-2010)
2) Steyn was part of much stronger SA teams than the England teams Anderson was/is part of. This inevitably will have affected their performances.
Here's my heart

Great analysis. It's amazing the way Anderson has gotten better as he has gotten older, what he's doing now at his age the only other player I remember doing something similar was Hadlee, truly phenomenal. Take out those first 6 years and he averages low 20s like all the other greats. Still after all this I still think Steyn was better as well as Akram,Marshall, Hadlee etc, I'd guess Anderson is top 20 all time though maybe around 15.
Oh...Jimmy,Jimmy...
It is certain that Bumrah & Cummins will be the two next GOAT bowlers
Hard to choose as superman & Batman between them😁
Superman and Captain Marvel. Rabada is Thor.
I guess Ashwin is Ironman , he has the smartest cricketing mind among bowlers
I don't think England can bring their own players.... The whole team is amalgamation pf different countries 😂😂😂.... Broad and Anderson last home made geniuses ❤️
Ashwin is ultron😂
Pat Cummins is surely Captain America, he can do bowling all day...
England managed Anderson well in late
But they are wasting Chris Woakes
Absolutely
they aren't wasting him. woakes is trash outside england
anderson is wayy better than woakes. woakes is nothing without dukes in his hand.
Why not make a vid on spinners? By the way - good vid
Pretty sure there will be a few of them.
Anderson since 2010 is a completely different bowler, An ATG
McGrath, Walsh, Pollock, Donald, Wasim are also probably better than anderson though. Not only steyn
Anderson and Ashwin also get dropped for away series even though they're bowling better than ever away from home.
Woah.... It's a over load of Info dump.... Great job brother....
Loved the Batman v Superman comparison. I think it can also be compared to the Messi v Ronaldo situation. Both of them are the best to ever do it but one of them is a naturally gifted superhuman and the other has just worked his arse off to reach this level.
Interesting, I would say there is a more even balance of people who think both are are better. But I get your point.
Soo if Dale steyn is superman then what was his kryptonite?🤣🤣
English pitches
@@JarrodKimberYT I beg to differ
Have u seen the 2008 sa vs eng series ?
Steyn took 16 wickets in 4 tests so.......
@@anujpethe684 and cummins took 29 in 5 matches in the 2019 ashes, so does that mean cummins is better than steyn? Might as well be considering , how many tailenders' wickets steyn has.
@@poo-tinthedwarfbunkerb1tch535 man those pitches that steyn bowled in 2008 2012 series were absolute flat roads and their batsman was in prime. See the scorecard
Dale steyn was on verge of being greatest bowler of all time then IPL happened to him😥😥😥😥😥
Very disappointed there's no Harris in this vid
Lord Harris?
Got to remember Jimmy has had no back up from batsman for most of his career as well and it does matter
Cook, Strauss, Trott, KP, Bell, Prior, Stokes, Root? I mean they got to number one with a top quality batting line up, and even now when their top order is failing, they still regularly have the deepest batting line ups around. Not sure many countries out there are dropping Bairstow for instance.
@@JarrodKimberYT how long were we number 1 for? Not very long by the time we got whitewhashed in the ashes 13-14 most of them batsman were gone. The batting is deep because we don't have top class top and middle order batsman so they stuff as many all rounders in as they can. Stokes is exceptional and root looks back to his best but the batting has been inconsistent to say the least for a long time
@@JarrodKimberYT very good video by the way 👌
@@bflex89 batting has been inconsistent in tests only. in white ball cricket definitely not
@@faith_in_the_future consistent since 2016 onwards but jimmy never played then
Gotham city. Seems more exciting
I would definitely prefer to live in Metropolis. Gotham is a blaringly corrupt hellhole that Batman barely keeps a lid on. Metropolis is a utopia driven by Superman.
Did anyone catch the photo of anderson cook and broad standing naked in the video wtf
Whoa! Huge bats 🤣
Oh Jimmy, Jimmy....
Well he just ruined my Tuesday by bowling the best over in his life.... was it really teh best ? Ther had go have been better.
Pointless comparing full career stats with Jimmy. English fans know he only developed half way through his career. You take Jimmy’s last third of his career (50 games) his average is 20.67 - better than Steyn who has been around 22 his whole career.
Yeah I feel like that’s almost what the video is about
@@JarrodKimberYT hahaha
People don't watch the video.
OMG! Who are you 😯
I bet Steyn got dropped less
Metropolis
Of course the track wasn't best for Pacers yet I expect broad n Jimmy to take some wickets Bumrah is no where close to Jimmy and Broad they are way more experienced.
But he never played in the IPL. 😢😭
In modern t20 he’d make quite a good early attacker with the ball
@@JarrodKimberYT if he bowled all 4 in the powerplay bcz the white ball swing a bit more in the starting overs.
Anderson since 2008 averages 24.63 and he's average apparently
☁️🌨️ Anderson best friend 😂🤣
Yeah, cause it never was cloudy for the first few years he bowled.
Another similarity between Anderson and batsman - both are scarred for life.
Batman with his parents death
Anderson with average away record against his world class home record
Ashwin is mostly shit outside india too, as were harbhajan and anil kumble...now you have my permission to cry.
Anderson is much better than Hadlee
Batman is out there robin wickets off of the Indians
I am not sure this works, but I will allow it.
It isn't a fair fight. Anderson is better. By far.
Anyone with a brain would take Anderson's career for their team over Steyn's without even a question
Statalicious
Bruh clearly Miller is better than Anderson, he's a memelord with a nice number of wickets /s
