    Great explanation of the range of thought processes behind India's selection. Thanks for another great video Jarrod! After watching Foakes in the most recent test, I would love to hear your take on batsmen-wicketkeepers vs wicketkeeper-batsmen (not that the distinction is necessarily always clear). I think that you briefly mentioned in a previous video that superior wicketkeepers need to be really, really good to make up for shortfalls in batting. I would love to hear more about this. Foakes really is mindblowingly good (Buttler has also been excellent recently), although maybe my standards are just low.

    Yes, sundar was selected in the first test coz of the agar syndrome, how do you drop one of the gabba heroes right after the gabba test, even if he's exactly similar to ashwin - selection has to be situation-based though, only reason sundar played the gabba was bcoz ashwin was injured, u can't try to fit sundar in as a jadeja when jadeja turns the ball the other way. In batting in the Aus series they went with prithvi Shaw due to a Joe burns syndrome - can't drop the bloke if he made a decent score last test series regardless of first class form since then

    So I have a metric I've developed called "Value Above Replacement Player"
    Only three Test spinners with over 100 Test wickets have a VARP of more than +100% (meaning that they're 100% better than a replacement player). Those three spinners are Hedley Verity, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ravindra Jadeja

    • @sirnorm
      @sirnorm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in all sincerity and earnestness, I would love to know more about this. Did you model it from baseballs WAR rating? Is it bowling only? Just thinking about how Warne didn't make the cut, despite being an above average #8 and world class fielder. Do you have a blog or website where I could read about it?

  • @guygilroy9719
    @guygilroy9719 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can understand the economy. Wrist spin is an attacking option and they are more in the team to take wickets than hold up an end. They will bowl more bad balls than the finger spinner but as they get far more revs on the bowl when they land it in the right spot they are more likely to take wickets. In only rare players like warne who could hold up an end as a wrist spinner.

But then I wonder if it was so, then why would Jarrod put this in public domain? i answer that myself - he will put it in public domain to test the waters - reactions of people - perhaps to test if there are any kinks in the analysis.

    Want to revisit it Jarrod? Sundar is a proper batsman (No. 6 / No. 7) who can bowl a bit (accurate offie but not too many revolutions on the ball and no obvious variations either) and might take a few wickets on a turner. His main job is to keep it tight and give a break to the lead spinners since India's top 6 doesn't bowl. Axar is similar to Jadeja (fastish left arm spin bowling all-rounder) but not as good as Jadeja is currently with the bat though even more accurate than Jadeja with ball.

    Jarrod, I'm curious to know if you've found similar kinds of YT channels/podcasts/etc. from other sports. I'm a huge fan of your work, and would love to find this kind of data-driven content for some of my other favourite sports (tennis, basketball, etc.).
    (I imagine there must be a bit more of it for the American team sports - they seem to be a little ahead-of-the-curve w/ respect to data (and democratization of data), compared to some of the European/Asian/etc.-centric sports.)

      Plenty of great guys in basketball, but they usually use clips to illustrate their points. Nekias Duncan and Mo Dakhil do threads of games on twitter to explain stuff. No idea about tennis.

    the data really paints a bad picture of Kuldeep's ability as a bowler. He may not be the best, but deserves to be in the team way more than he has been. He still manages to be a part of the squad. I reckon spending some good time on first class can help him. As the great M A K Pataudi once said "You need to play your best players irrespective of the left right combinations". Yes there are roles as batsmen and bowlers one need to fill, and since most players now are good enough fielders, I don't think left right preference should deny a better player the chance to play for their country.

    • @JarrodKimberYT
      @JarrodKimberYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The data doesn't say much as he hasn't play much of recent times.

    • @rana1561
      @rana1561 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JarrodKimberYT So if selectors don't have enough data to back any decision, are they going with idea of, as you mentioned, the novelty of left arm wrist spin, and keeping him in the reserves for this long, early in his career, not getting enough games to grind his skills, don't you think it will harm his growth? I reckon he is better off out of the squad if he is not getting much games, he is still young enough to improve by playing domestic or County cricket if he gets an offer.

    this is a really cool video. selection of a bowling attack is usually pretty complicated, but it feels like no one ever talks about it. the way you've broken it down is really nice.
    Just one tip though, for your average/economy graph I wouldn't put both numbers on the same scale, because the economy ends up just looking like a straight line and you can't tell the difference between 2 or 5. I would put a scale on the right-hand side for economy (say from 0 to 5) and then show it via that
