I'd say it's also important to remember that Elder Dragon is only a title in the universe. Rajang and Ahtal-Ka aren't considered Elders despite their crazy abilities, so if we don't get any Elders in Wilds, it doesn't mean we won't get impressive fights

There are some powerful monsters that can rival an Elder Dragon’s might or perhaps be considered to be equal powers. They are known as Elder Dragon-Level Monsters.

So here is a theory (and a wall of text):
As many people have realised in other channels and discussions, the translation of Arkvelds moniker: White Wraith is actually quite bad translation as the orginal japanese moniker is:
Shiro no Koei
Shiro means white yes but koei is interesting it is written in two kanji:
One that means orphan, alone
And another that means shadow, silhouette, phantom
This means the name is literally White lonely/orphan shadow
This kinda tells us that it literally is the last one of its kind, which we kinda figured as people called it an extinct species. But more interestingly it kinda works together with Nata being the last of his tribe now.
But here is where it gets really interesting:
There is also another neat theory floating around the more shady corners of the web about the meaning: Koei (written quite differently in kanji to be fair) is the name of one year during the japanese civil war where a coalition "northen court" known as six different pretenders to the japanese emperors throne.
And since japanese developers tend to use very obscure references from japanese history, some have theorized that Arkveld might be a competitor species to another that actually won their rivarly for the rulership of the area, hence why Arkveld was imprisoned as the last one. Maybe the keepers venerated the survivor species.
So basically the story might be that there were two super powerful ancient species of monsters that fought each other for dominance in the game area during the ancient civilization with one species becoming dominant and the Arkveld species being wiped out by the other species to extinction. And the Arkweld we have now is literally the last survivor of that species now trying to take over the area once more as an usurper to the throne, so to speak.
This "war" between the two species led to the downfall of the ancient civilization in the area hence the ruins.
And natas people, the keepers, held prisoner the last remaining Arkweld until it escaped and set off to fight for its rightful place in athe are. Possibly it is able to reproduce by itself if it gains enough life energy, the chains seem to absorb energy from the apexes
This gains credence with the fact that the developers have stated that the theme of this monster hunter is the relationships between humans/civilization and monsters. Instead of elder dragons.
Some tin foil hattery, but the idea seems at the very least interesting to concider.

This is also inline in my theory that the game references yin and yang. It's obvious to the way they colored the two monsters in the logo. It went from a lighter color through a darker one, which means the white wraith actually has a rival who might be revealed as something like the black revenant. The story might also revolve around the yin and yang which represents life and death and how it's needed for balance. Something like that I guess
Or it also could be that the other monster is actually arkveld's evolution that makes it a black dragon once it successfully killed all the apexes and got their elements. Arkveld then becomes an avatar monster that controls all the said elements. Kinda like alatreon
That said, it could be that the same arkveld who was imprisoned is the same monster that wiped out its entire species after it became a black dragon and the chains that held it off are made out of the same materials the ancient civilization used to make a dragonator which made arkveld weaker as the time goes by until it returns back to its normal form. Now that it escaped, arkveld is back again to getting all the apex predators' powers and become a black dragon as it used to be

The fifth gen having the most elder dragons made sense.
The main plot was the elder crossing, where every 10 years, elders would fly across the sea to the new world when they sensed their end was near.
I'm fine with there being fewer, if not, no elder dragons, though I doubt there will be at least a few.
It lets the developers put more creative monsters on the roster.
Also Imagine Elder Dragons only come around for the Master Rank expansion

even with lore standards. encountering elder dragons are suppose to be an incredibly rare occurrence. the only reason why theres so many in world is because its set on a time period called elder crossing where elders migrate to the new world to die.
In Iceborne, fights like Zinogre, Rajang, Raging Brachy, etc show that you can have "elder dragon level difficulty" fights without having actual elder dragons. Having too many ED's can kinda make them feel less special.
Honestly, Raging Brachy, Furious Rajang and Zinogre are harder than any of the Elder Dragons in the game lol

I'm calling it now. The reason the flag ship was found was because an ancient ecosystem was unearthed, allowing these "extinct" monsters to re-apear. EX - hallow earth godzilla

My first MH game was Tri- I only fought 3 Elder Dragons, and none of them were standard hunts. Two were siege monsters, one had an arena fight. So I won't be too disappointed if we don't have many Elder Dragons in Wilds, but I would like to have at least a few.

Honestly, the Apexes' ability to take advantage of and interact with their environments so much only makes me want to see Elder Dragons in this game EVEN MORE.
Just imagine what they could do with these new environment-shaping mechanics. You could have Teostra turning whole zones of the Windward Plains to glass with his novas. You could have Velkhana freezing the rivers of the Scarlet Forest solid, potentially trapping the hunter inside. You could have Kushala's tornadoes pick up sand or water from the two zones, turning them into dust devils or small hurricanes with different effects, making his fight different depending on where you're fighting him...
And that's just with only the two zones we've been shown so far. Who knows how many more possibilities there could be with the other 3 or so zones we haven't seen yet?!

Glaze fest
People literally forget Shen Gaoren (a carapaceon monster, not an elder dragon) gave us an EPIC boss fight in massive proportions. He was considered an elder-dragon level threat! We also have Akantor classified as a flying wyvern but the fight was epic and memorable. We’ve had so many “non-elder dragon” epic fights and so, having no elders for Wilds will not be a problem!

Tbh the problem is that most players break his head way before his nest fight. So it's really hard to see the nest special effects.

You know what'd be hilarious? If the twist final fight wasn't a new Elder, but an old one getting a revamp and shown as the major threat it could be in a different environment.

@athroughzdude no they couldn’t as they have stated very directly that underwater combat will not come back also keep your hopes way down for dire miralis as that has only ever appeared in the third gen equivalent of an expansion and only will appear in expansions
one theory I have, is that if there are 5 locales, the fifth and final one you go to would be a land lost to time (like the lost world from Ice Age 3, silly example i know but go with me), where monsters like arkveld were long thought to be extinct but are alive and thriving
Remember, 3U only had Ceadeus and its G rank subspecies, Jhen Mohran and its subspecies, Alatreon, and Dire Miralis.
4U only brough shaggy, Dalamadur and gogmazios as new elders, brought back some old ones and even then, the elders weren‘t the focus of end game guild quests cause that was mostly occupied by apex lv140 dual hunts
remember guys that the old gen games were never focused on elder dragons either, and where secret monsters at the end most of the time, which is why all flagship monsters were normal wyverns, gen 1 rathalos, gen 2 tigrex + nargacuga etc. and only world with nergigante + velkhana had an elder dragon as a flagship monster right? so yeah, Wilds is just going back to the roots and there will be a high propability that we will face elders at the end of HR or MR again

The special attacks within certain areas that monsters can do, might actually be something that some of the Frontier Devs idea, we do have Frontier Devs working on Wilds right now.
I wouldn't mind, personally, if we only got precious few elder dragons. At least we'd have them; and there's a decent chance we'll be getting lots of monsters, new or not, to hunt, so there's that to maybe even it out?

I highly doubt we won’t get dlc. And I HIGHLY DOUBT we won’t get some elders in said doc if we don’t get any in base.
Elders are the equivalent to legendary pokemon.
They are one of the big selling points.

Arcveld I bet might end up with an elder dragon or something. Maybe even serving one. Idk it just feel like he might. I’d be fine without elders but I highly doubt we won’t get some. Worst case we get pseudo elders.

They can make endgame monsters without being boxed into the dragon/wyvern archetype. That seems to be what the devs are getting at and what the title Wilds embodies.
I believe we aren't completely out of dragons in Wolds, I believe we will get less, but rather something we get at end game or in a update.
But I hope the Monster only swim zone mean they could add Lagiacrus in a update.
I completely agree. We don’t need elder dragons to have a meaningful hunting experience.
Seriously, so many people don’t care about the lower tier monsters because of how weak they are. If anything, I’m pro anti-elder dragon at this point because so many people don’t appreciate the lower tier monsters. Which is a shame because a lot of my favorites are elder dragons. Hell my number 1 favorite is a black dragon. Honestly, just appreciate what you get because we don’t deserve anything & we are fools if we think we do. I may be livid about the Insect Glaive losing the consistent bouncing aerial attacks but I appreciate the upgrade in grounded play. If they let the IG keep at least 1 aerial attack bounce then I’d be overjoyed. And no I’m not talking about the 1 aerial bounce off that exists in MH Wilds. Look, what I’m trying to get at is so many people, focus their anger too much on things that don’t need the focus. Things like weapon tech, monster appeal, combat feel, overall balance, & storytelling immersion are what people should talk about to improve the series. Not stuff that tailors to you only. That’s completely selfish. “My favorite monster not being in a game” as a deal breaker is asinine to me. If you have a genuine problem with something like that that’s fine don’t buy it. But don’t turn it into something that “should” be a selling point because the selling points are fun combat & good storytelling. As long as a MH game follows those basic selling rules then it doesn’t matter what they make. It will always be good or even amazing. If you are someone who can’t except a MH game because of an intentional design choice then the community is better off without you. Don’t believe me then you try making a game. 😒I’m totally sure you can make a AAA game.
I do infact adore the fact that these beautiful beasts have their own home field advantage. Because it adds a layer of uniqueness to each creature. My mind goes to Tigrex because of the rocks it would throw at you can change based on the environment!
I feel like its infact high-time, considering we even got canon Fatalis, that the research commission actually categorizes the Elder Dragons rather than just calling them Elder Dragons. Lot of them have similar skeletal structures, and because Worldborne is canon, the Research Commission should have had enough samples to get a better understanding on these monsters. Even Aiden had a Kushala set, which is saying a lot.
This will be my first MH game and I’m hyped because of Josh’s contagious excitement!!

I think the guiding lands and aletreon were tests. And if you complained about aletreon get ready. The first trailer warned us. We are going to dealing with elders, elemental elders and elders that DGAF territory or elements. So many things they can do. It’s going to be difficult!

What if the elder dragon moving into the endgame is our fault? Say we kill the apex of every zone, and this allows a semi parasitic eldar dragon to move in and and become an ultimate/ multi zone predator because it has no natural predator, allowing it to become way too powerful and become a genuine threat that normally wouldn't occur were it not for our meddling

Rey Dau all the way. I love the Scarlet Forest locale, but in terms of monsters I loved the Windward Plains roster much more.
Plus that Rey vs Ark fight in the trailer was epic, how Rey just shut down one of Ark's whips with his wing-arms, and the crackling lightning that came out when that happened
Personally, I think an awesome final boss for this game is Dalamador. He is a perfect example of how destructive elders can be. Or maybe a new elder who has its own army of monsters that he uses in his fight.
Like imagine an armor effect where if your party is wearing the grunt monster armor and you're wearing the final bosses armor, you get some kind of boost.
It's also better for power scaling because that was KINDA getting out of hand.
I would love to see a final boss that is an insane hunter wearing fatalis armor and mimics you weapon and move set depending on your weapon
I’m a hunter from the very first MH and it has never let me down! There will be something special for us, I’m thinking a complete environmental change at some point pending an event
My gut says that they maybe wanted to do this with Sunbreak. Or at least that Sunbreak may have been partially a test run for the idea.
Look at the lead-up to Sunbreak's release: the biggest part of the marketing was Malzeno, Garangolm, and Lunagaron. They were "The Three Lords" of the new region of Elgado. The new map that we got was divided into three distinct biomes, each thematically tied to one of the Lords: a frozen mountain area for Lunagaron, a dense swamp for Garangolm, and a ruined castle for Malzeno. Of the three, only one was an Elder Dragon. This produced a lot of speculation on what made Lunagaron and Garangolm so special, how they interacted to be spoken in the same breath as the Elder Dragon Malzeno.
Now, the answer that we got was, well, nothing. Sure, Lunagaron served as the inciting incident to bring us to Elgado, and later on was the focus of the Qurio mission, but otherwise just wasn't all that important. Garangolm was basically just a regular, if cool-looking monster. Malzeno, and its conflict with Gaizmagorm and the Qurio, was the real focus of the show.
But the potential was there. Imagine if our first interaction with Garangolm was it having a territorial dispute with Lunagaron or Malzeno. Imagine if, as had even been speculated by Josh and Cotton in Pro and Noob at the time, the Lunagaron we hunted in the spooky Qurio mission really did have different moves, or a proper physical change as a result of being strong enough to resist the Qurio's but not to the same degree as Malzeno.
Why didn't we get that? Who knows. Maybe the concept had always been there for Sunbreak, but the fact that it was an expansion for Rise made it so that they couldn't fully execute on it. Maybe the overall idea came too late in Sunbreak's development.
Or maybe, the marketing department went "you know, we've got this big game with this whole focus on non-Elder Dragon monsters being the 'boss' of particular regions. It's still gonna be a while to get it fully up and running, what if we test it with a couple of the new monster designs for this expansion for another game that's gonna be coming out first."
The extinct species, as far as I can recall, is an umbrella term, which could have both elder dragon level monsters or elder dragons themselves but having a term like this for all extremely strong monsters in general along with the semi open world nature of the game really adds in to the uncharted lands feel of wilds.
Unlike the new world, the wilds region is truly an unexplored area, heightening the feel of adventure way more than we've ever seen in the previous gens. If done right, this can be some of the most peak JRPG experiences we've seen in recent years 🙌
Maybe im a bit alone with this but i think Elder dragons lost their impact in World because there were so many.
Id rather have a 3 Ultimate Situation which only had 4 but still some of the coolest Endgame rosters with Lucent Nargacuga, abyssal Lagiacrus and Savage Devil Jho

People are so stupid. Less elders mean more variety in monster design. And late game monsters can be impressive and challenging without being a dragon. As another commenter said, look at Rajang, for example. Hating the game for having fewer or no elders is such a low IQ take. Like, come on. At least wait to see the full roster until you complain 🤨. Edit: Also, I hope we get more variety in elements because usually half the base roster of MonHun games are fire monsters, and water is underrepresented, or they are just pushovers. Give me strong and intimidating water monsters!
Wilds I think that if they are including elder dragons, it's going to be very late high rank, not to mention of something akin to Arkveld was symbolically holding the chains of something, like a gatekeeper. I got a vibe of we'll fight Arkveld in a colder climate perhaps towards the end, or something within some canyon of jagged rocks, and perhaps like I said being a "gatekeeper" that is holding something back. The Keepers are perhaps also involved in something similar, now I wouldn't be surprised if somehow we don't maybe see Gore/Shagaru return. Just kind of a feeling I got with things, Lagiacrus would be perfect seeing Uth's gameplay in the videos. It is just too perfect a setting to not have him at some point. If Uth is apex, lagiacrus would be right below/possible contender or rival. However for the monsters in general, and the level of care being given to all the fights we've seen with the apexes and perhaps even others? I've no doubt for both returning and new monsters we'll see all the love poured into their ai, animations and everything else. Wilds has clearly been shown to be their passion project, and it's become one of their biggest franchises, so it's wise to pour resources and go "Do whatever you need to do, to make it work right and be the best possible."
Doshaguma in last? I will not put up with such slander!

I wouldnt mind less elder dragons. I can deff say i feel teostra and kushala are worn out for me. If they add any elders i hope its new ones. And maybe have them be the apex monsters of each local in the high rank story. Or revamp the elders and introduce a new one that you fight differently like what 3u did with jhen.

Arkveld was locked up for the keepers to protect the ancient dragon weapon and that's why they are the keepers, arkveld escaped destroyed the keepers village and we are going to find the ancient dragon weapon and we'll also have to stop it after someone else from the guild activates it.

Maybe instead of generic elders we normally get, we get instead get "Ancient" versions or frontier esque elders. Especially after seeing Cotton's wishlist for returning Frontier monsters. Arkveld looks oddly similar to Zenaserisu whether it was designed inspired or possible extinct species of Zenaserisu.
I’m sure will have the traditional trio Teostra, Kushala Doora and Chameleos; they just won’t be story focus or they’ll probably be the only Elder Dragons or they won’t be called “Elder Dragon.” We do have “Unclassified” monsters that are Elder Dragons.
What i really wanna see in MH in general are better side quest. not the same old optional quest but a grand side quest that branches put to multiple other quest. Like give us NPC quest that are 3 or 5 quest deep and not all of them are hunting quest. Maybe something like gather x materials inside rey dau's den and we get a super mad boi inside patrolling the area. And by the end we unlock the quest giver as a follower or they will give you an exclusive weapon. I've been playing a lot of cyberpunk lately and I wish the level of quest is the same for MH games.
I'm fine with there not being a lot of elder dragons because that means there's room for more new monsters, and for old non-elder dragon monsters to get a new coat of paint finally.

To date the Molten Tigrex is still one of the hardest fights I've done in all of the MH games. Soloing him took me the whole time and my ENTIRE inventory that I brought. Bro was a menace and was not an elder dragon.
I just want to see Qurupeco make a return.
Imagine the swarm that Qurupeco would attract or summon.
Hell even all the velociraptor types with there packs would be great to have around as well.

Also, Elder Dragons aren't everything. Just look at Kirin. Dude gets to be the embodiment of lightning, but gets bodied by a hungry monkey. And having these sort of Ape-Apex creatures makes me interested in what they can do for the sort of 'personality' monsters. Especially when G/Master Rank comes out and buffs them up to the point of outrageousness. Like, should Paolumu come back, who is usually just a cheeky little puffball, but they give it a small part of the map where his drive-by is actually dangerous (be it like a narrow corridor or a ledge that it likes to push people off of). That could really breathe life into some of the older monsters that kinda need it. Because honestly, even though World was supposed to be about ecology and enviornment, not a lot of monsters really did anything with the locales. Where as Wilds seems to be all about how the monsters react to the enviornment.
(Also I just want my puffy Bat-Squirrel back in a main-line game. Pukie, Tobi, and Anjanath got to be in Rise, but my poor bat got canned.)

Ive been saying this for a lil bit now that i would rather prefer a mh game where every fight has memorable moments rather than the endgame being what im trying to strive for. Each fight being unique also makes grinding more fun, you get to take the monsters quirks and flaws and master them like you would an elder dragon. Hell if every fight was like behemoth in mhw then i think it would be not only challenging but it doesnt just teaches to wail on a monster till it dies but to use your head and plan your attacks. Of all mh games ive played i have the highest hopes this give the same impact world did when it released.
Imagine wilds storyline showing us a monster go from lower tier wyvern to higher tier elder dragon due to its environment.
Having almost no elder dragon at launch is actually fine for me.
We get to experience an endgame where we enjoy all of the new content wilds has to offer.
In a way, kinda like rise, where elders were added with TU.
Obviously i wanna see them, expecially with the new weather system, it could be incredible and it would feel very sad if they weren't added at all, but i'm fine if they come around at the very end of base wilds.
I would love to see a locale for every element, given that the apex Monsters thus far have had significant control of the elements I don't believe that five locales is too big of a jump, but at the same time five locales might be too much pressure on the devs.

It would be interesting if they try to break end game meta by replacing the meta fatalis armor (lots of slots and attack, crit boost armor) with several armors that are more specialized for specific playstyles/weapons. Each one is made from the Apex monsters that are on the same level.
Also a fun thought- imagine if since the focus is on the Apexes, if the end game involves Deviants of the Apexes 😂
If we don't get elders to begin with im completely fine with it. Cause imagine how insane they can become considering we now have full blown weather systems. Imagine kushala getting angry, the sky darkens, tornadoes begin to form. Imagine teostra getting angry, literal fire starts to combust out of thin air. These apexes are looking fantastic and when we get elders, they are gonna change the entire area they are in. Its what they do just by being somewhere.

have people forgotten that you can have spectacle with without elders, MONSTERS like DEVILJHO, RAJANG, BAZELGEUSE, MAGNAMALO, ESPINAS are those beast that has the elder dragon treatment without being elder dragons.
I think wilds will be like the 3rd gen of monster hunter, where there're only a few elder dragons, and they're all either seige battles like jhan mohren or super final bosses like alatreon or dire miralis. There's no lesser elder dragon present in normal maps. That's ok with me, but I really want to see an elder dragon show up in wilds' normal maps and witness how they can change the entire ecosystem around them. You can give normal monsters elder dragon level fights, but you can't give normal monsters elder dragon level environment changing abilities, because that's one of the defining traits of being considered an elder dragon

The apex monsters were the hardest monsters of GU, and I think more players need to view it that way
I think its closer to how the magalas were in rise/sunbreak. They will be there but they wont play much of a part in the story. Possibly as a way to show the power of the apex monsters as well as being on par to elder dragons.
I had same feeling with mh tri,have less elder dragon but,amazing experience hunt with swimming ability, its win win,capcom dev absolutely know what theyre doing for fandom
I'd argue that Elder Dragons cause a larger design problem. In order to justify that title, everything about them needs to be significantly greater. More spectacle, more dangerous, more mechanically interesting, and more rewarding... which means everything that comes before them needs to be far less so, in order for that large gap to exist. I'd rather all the monsters be the best versions of themselves possible than to severely limit them in order for Elder Dragons to feel meaningful.
Elders should retain the status they had in the first Monster Hunter. Extremely rare, secret or end bosses. You can keep them interesting if you treat them the way Fatalis is treated. The moment you unleash them as part of the regular roster, not only does it hurt other monsters, it also hurts the elders.
@@buragi5441 So you mean to treat them as either a timed event or something you have to earn, so that it's not easily repeatable. I'd agree with that, but the remaining issue is that the gear from them overshadows the rest... just like Fatalis did. In fact one of my favorite changes from the ICE mod is to normalize that gear to keep it from overshadowing everything else.
I bet there will be Elders in Wilds I just also think there will be boundaries crossed again where an Apex can go toe to toe with an Elder also and be just as powerful, Arkveld might pull it off like the other monsters before it
I think we aren't gonna have any Elder Dragon until Master Rank expansion. Because in a game with the weather making such a huge impact... Elder Dragon's who are also looked as the cause huge Natural Disasters. I would be completely disappointed if they didn't affect the Zone in some insane way and that is something I would wanna see in an Expansion.

Personally, I don't mind the fact that there aren't Elder Dragons at the game's launch, but I hope the developers hide some good surprises for the end of the game. I admit that curiosity and the desire to play make me watch all the Wild videos, but the surprise of the monsters that we'll encounter is so good...
By the way, am I the only one who feels like the monsters are small? Excluding the Apex, all the others seem so small, compared to many of the ones we had in World.
Even lore wise some of the crazy strong monsters aren’t elders lol, rajang is a perfect example of this, he literally boxes elders on a regular and has crazy attacks in game and is an insane fight

I think it's a bit of a shame that the Elder Dragons aren't really relevant in wilds right now. But then again, I'm not angry, I just want to play a good game of Monster Hunter with my people and have fun. But who knows when a free update comes or an expansion they add. But I also heard that a certain pair of monsters is coming back and will play a big role in the story. We'll see whether that's true in February at the latest.
For all we know, the final bosses could be like akantor and ukanlos

It also makes sense that the game focusing on nature and it’s connection to humanity wouldn’t have elder dragons, you know the monsters that are described as forces of nature that change the very environment they live in. That doesn’t really suit Wilds, while with the apexes, they are strong monsters that have adapted to the environment which means we get that cool monster but it isn’t a problem with any lore. That’s my take anyway

I could see them scaling down the amount of Elders we get in Base Wilds in comparison to how many there were in Base World (which is to say, maybe we get 4 or 5 as opposed to World's 7), but I doubt they'd launch the game especially devoid of Elders when Rise was criticized and scrutinized for doing just that
I do think we'll get elders, but i dont think they'll be a part of the main story. Well excluding the boss monster for the base game. I still think we'll get an elder for the end of the story, but i do think the elders may make an appearance in endgame at a certain rank individually after the story
I'm not really bothered by not having many (or not at all) elder dragon, they seem's to focus in adding all the monster know to date in the game, wild look's more and more like a monster hunter generation ultimate with each time they show new monster, i hope to see Nerscilla :O.
I still hope there's a couple elders at launch just for personal reasons but I agree it will be great regardless. Capcom doesn't miss when it comes to Monster Hunter.
im perfectly okay with this new potential story where elders aren’t the main threat or target.
in iceborne we saw monsters like the Frustrated 4 (savage, Raging, furious and Seething) be essentially elder dragon level threats without being elders.
in rise we saw how they can make a fanged wyvern like magna can move the whole story along and go toe to toe with elders. So if the apex’s are being shown now for the hype but turn out to be A LOT stronger than they look that’s great. if they’re fated 4 level that’s also cool.
aside from the end boss and maybe 1 or two late game monsters
i’m not expecting many elders. i want more “normal” strong monsters.
leave the ludicrous power to the elders and make em feel hella special again.

I'm fine with that, I like idea Wyvern and other species be highlight this time around. Elder Dragons are suppose to special and more importantly rare, if they just filled entire game with them they no longer going to feel special.
