Arvin never ceases to impress me. To me, Sofia changed the interior coloring not for taste, but because of her feelings or something going on in her life. Arvin finally brings it up at 9:34. He never misses ANY detail.
Great video Arvin. You critiqued a beautiful property. This video hit me harder than nearly any video you've done. I see there is a huge gap in knowledge between personal style and appropriate style. I think even professional decorators would fail to recognize some of the subtle elements you are trying to explain here. Well done.
For whatever reason, I have a natural aversion to the lack of creativity displayed by the exclusive use of white, off-white, Real Estate Agent white, and light beige. I don’t know if it’s the lack of imagination, the overuse, or the stark harshness of it. It’s the interior color of every rental unit from the Valley to the South Bay since the 1970s. Thanks Arvin, great to see a surprise bonus episode on a Monday.
Some people like all white. In this case it certainly is an improvement over what came before. I had my house built and decorated according to how I want to live and I'm really happy with it. I could care less about resale. I lived in LA years ago and real estae was all about buying and selling just like everything and everyone., Yes I made money. However after selling a little house in Laguna that I loved living in just because it made money when I was not happy living in a bigger fancier more "upscale" place made me question the system. Seems to be a blind spot in the cultural mythos,
@@rosieposie9564 In 2001, I chose light aqua for my living room and pink beige for the dining, both with yellow putty trim, and still like it (it's a traditional house with 11' ceilings). You can put multiple unsaturated colors together and if there's no bright white, it won't look garish (see Persian rugs). The white walls help make the art choices in these houses look even worse. Green walls tend to make people and food look unappetizing--that's why reds are traditional for dining rooms.
I completely disagree, I love that she didn’t go with what the original architecture dictated but put her own twist on it. Adding the brick accents would look any stereotypical LA Spanish style. I do agree that some of the furniture or art are misplaced plus the French shabby chic style wasn’t coherent. But overall I like that she made it her own and didn’t follow any set design plan, her designer on the other hand should’ve done better.
I never understood the fixation on what is 'in', from a psychological perspective. I get it from a resale perspective, but I've seen people that seemingly have no taste of their own and their decisions are based solely on what's popular. I dislike bright white cold asylum style interiors no matter what society says.
Well the kitchen is always the center of gravity even in the best designed homes but you're right that there should be more rooms people want to hang out in rather than just this one. 11:01 -> guess it's safe to say she's well heeled. PS: One of my favorite AD mansion tours was the one of Ashley Benson's Los Angeles home... cozy, eclectic and unique...
I totally agree on the shutters. I have spent a lot of time in Italy and a good shutter actually does give a Home an authentic European accent. They are also very functional too for blocking light and keeping a house cool when it’s hot outside.
Hi Arvin, Great installment, but I can’t say I agree with you about the vaulted ceilings. Brick-facing them would create an oppressive, even claustrophobic atmosphere and make them look like a large wine cellar underground. I think some creative painting of the vaulting in different shades or even frescoes would be better.
Another wonderful and entertaining video. I really like the very long videos-but these shorter 15 minutes ones are also great. Look forward to the next one!!!
It felt like he was splitting hairs and desperately trying to find something the be critical of. I love that Sofia made the home lighter and did not just slavishly follow the so called Mediterranean style.
This is the first house I disagree with Arvin. I like it although I agree the white sitting rooms are too sterile. His suggestion of a brick ceiling is so bad it’s funny - 🤦🏻♀️
Yeah, the brick ceiling suggestion made me do a double a take. You know in fashion when a look becomes costumey, that comment was the interior design equivalent.

It's really for everyone
I love this home and have to disagree with your design opinions 😂 the white wash beach vibes is popular with the hip crowd of LA. But some of the original stone texture should have been left alone for the home to feel more like a sanctuary and less sterile. Not change to entire stone ceilings definitely.
huge fan of the video and your channel! however, the picture you're showing @1:23 is her previous on san ysidro that she was able to finally sell after nearly two years on the market and almost 6 mil reduction from her her initial list price; not her home in beverly park
In that outside photo of the pool and house, the clean house is fine. Adding some more color with blooming colorful plants and different shades/colors and shapes of foliage would add the interest and more character it needs.
I love your content. You’re opinion on housing seems right on and you’re approach to us in video is amazing and shows actual empathy towards house shoppers. I appreciate your humor and non judgmental approach as well. You come from a jovial perspective which makes me take you more watchable. Yet you are completely professional as well. You're so insightful. She's spent much of her life trying to seem accessible to the masses while personally keeping people at a distance, because it's the reality of her brilliance and beauty. The home is emblematic of _look but don't touch._
Great Video Arvin, I like how you critique while adding how you think it should look, the description and thought process along with the visuals is a great touch. 🙌🏾
Common mistake. I don’t know how this started but everyone thinks Avi Arad’s house is Denzel Washington’s house. Denzel Washington’s house is of course in Beverly Park, but it is not the one pictured it’s actually quite a bit larger.
Most of Arvin's critique is that the finishes isn't in the most currently popular style and wouldn't be easy to sell now. But maybe she isn't planning on selling it during her lifetime and wants to retire here, so she doesn't care about what would sell and consciously picked the styles where she personally feels best.
The 5% property tax will simply be reflected in the price. If you find two identical homes, one with the tax and one without, the home without the tax will be priced higher. The opportunity cost of paying this higher price is roughly equal to what you'd save by avoiding the 5% tax. This is how financial markets work.
@@ArvinHaddadOfficial She's naturally a mousey blonde, lightened by the sun. So you'll see different shades from mousey blonde to blonde, depending on where she's living.
She could not get work as a blonde latina. Casting directors told her that the US audience would not believe it. So she had to dye her hair brown to get roles.😮😊😂
I love your take on this property! You are absolutely speaking my language. I like the property a lot, but I'd definitely have gone a lot more Mediterranean with the decor. But I don't own it, and I don't have to live with it. Honestly I'm not sure I'll ever come back to LA again.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Interesting discussion, however, at the end is what Sofia Vergara wants to see in her home, not what other individuals think she should do with her mansion. Having said that, Sofia Vergara has several other properties to enjoy for years to come. Sofia, is a very intelligent business woman and she has built an empire not only on her looks & sexy image, but her savvy money investments.
I will concede, though, that I see the middle way between both your perspective and Sofia Vergara's. I think she found the property dismal because the interior palette was macabre. Your terra cotta and brick features would have brought the character and allowed her to brighten the place without erasing the identifying qualities. Although her designer needed to widen their hue palette beyond white and eggshell. Pops of color could easily have supported a brighter space.
Typically guests congregate in the kitchen when there's action going on, like the owner is cooking. But this owner admits she doesn't cook, so what is everyone doing in the kitchen, just hanging around and talking? Which you indicate as a major flaw since there's no other attractive place for them to do so. And I assume there's a chef's kitchen somewhere, so you don't even get to see any cooking being done.
What an unfortunate renovation: replacing the interior's original beauty, charm, and warmth with sterile, bland, all-white elements, creating an epic exterior-interior architectural mismatch.
Dude, she buys what she loves. That’s what makes her so beautiful screw Beverly Hills and what men want!! She built an oasis that any woman would kill to live in. I think it’s spectacular.!!!

I really don't like the persistant use of "Spanish" for a culture, when it's a language or a country. She's Colombian, not Spanish. She's Hispanic or Latina, but not Spanish, nor Mediterranean.
I have to disagree. Mediterranean style is out. Lighter look and white is peaceful. I can’t stand houses with brick and stone in the ceiling. I think her house is beautiful.
The house was exceptional for how generic it was relative to how vibrant and alive the owner is (not to mention the wonderful country she is from!). I agree with Arvin. At first glance, the renovated house is clean looking, but it is monotonous and dare I say boring. The kitchen is almost an afterthought, tucked away in the corner and it doesn't speak to any of the other rooms. It is too bad that a kitchen/ family room wasn't created. Her guests still prefer being in her (small) kitchen over the sterile family room. She purchased this house while she was still married. Arvin's reference to personal motivations behind the simplified style might be related to the marriage.

I like your videos when you talk about structural design flaws, but it is curious why you comment on people’s interior design choices for their own homes showcased through the AD tours. Just because you don’t care for it doesn’t really make it a flaw. 🤷♀️
One of the things I find curious on many of these real estate presentations is the focus on appliances when they are generally a fraction of the overall cost and they can EASILY REPLACED. To even intimate that appliances are part of the permanent architecture of the real estate is shameful and intellectually tiresome.
