Wow, this was, in my opinion, probably the best TTC to date. It's really interesting to hear Marshall talk about how the coverage team works and it makes you appreciate the work they put into bringing us these live events. Marshall is a great commentator and it was really exciting to see him in TTC and talking with the Loadingreadyrun crew.
Marshall's Rafiq deck sounds like quite a bit of fun. Really neat to find out Marshall still goes to FNM - very respectable, and I already had a positive impression of him.
I saw this video in my recommended. I didn't intend on listening to an entire hour, but this was really interesting and it flew by. Marshall is a great commentator and the LLR crew are great interviewers. I don't play Magic (anymore - played from Revised - Urza then briefly played some Lorwyn block) but I've kept up with the game and usually try to catch a stream on weekends. This was a really interesting behind the scenes look at the stream/coverage process. I used to travel around setting up computer and projection equipment for courtrooms and the discussion about setting up the night before and dealing with the convention halls really hit home with when I had to deal with judges and lawyers and poorly designed courtrooms. Great interview.
Very nice episode! I've been enjoying the coverage of the last two Pro Tours and I was really impressed by the seemingly flawless organization and the high quality of the live stream, so its interessting to hear about all the work going into it. Marshall Sutcliff is definitely one of my favourite commentators while there are others where I'm rather like "Oh no, not that guy again!". But as I said, overall great quality and highly enjoyable. And as well, when I talk to people who don't know magic and I tell them about event coverage they are like "What? It's just a card game and they have regular international tournaments streamed live with professional commentators? Crazy!" ;)
I feel similar to Marshall when it comes to listening to your podcasts. It feel like I am among friends and a member the discussion, despite never having put in input or meeting any of you. Your style is very inclusive and I like it a lot. :-)
WOTC really has improved their coverage over the past few years, and the segments between matches are definitely a marked improvement over the replays. I enjoy Marshall's coverage on camera. People don't realize how hard it is to fill up so much time on air. It's a job that looks easier than it is.
I really felt betrayed by the camera when it went down xD I want to thank Marshall for telling us about the "off camera" part that happens at the PTs or GPs. I appreciate the new content: it makes the stream better, enjoyable and more educative. The replays were making me lose interest in the livestream and for a time I would just not watch the GP streams as they were going to be available soon after here in TH-cam, but the new content made it better to watch continuously. Good TTC. Will be waiting for the next one.
I hope Marshall sees this comment. At first I honestly didn't like your style of commentating when you first started coverage. However, as you've gained more experience and I got accustomed to your style, I really enjoy what you bring to the table. Now, I am a huge fan and I hope you keep up the good work. You and Zac Hill are a great duo and I look forward to your future coverages.
I started playing Magic just earlier this year. I've been putting a lot of time to get decent at the game and to understand it more deeply. I'm a hardcore gamer at heart. I've been playing various (video) games with passion for the past 12 years, or so and and I want to do well in games I invest time and effort in. At the moment, I understand the basic metagame of standard, limited and modern, mainly because I've been watching a LOT of pro tours, other video sources and reading articles. So a major part of that is thanks to you Marshall! Your PT Coverage is great and your drafts are very informative and entertaining! To respond to what you talked about M15 limited and White being the strongest color, why do I always get the feeling that White is just plain and simple the strongest color overall? Personally, I hate this because I think it's crucial to the game that all sides are somewhat equal for the game to be fair and diverse. I don't enjoy playing White myself, like at all, and it pisses me off that White always gets the best value creatures, auras and what not. It feels like I'm forced into splashing White to stay competitive. When it comes to games I like using methods and strategies that are thought out by me. Not by any pro player or anyone else. I want to test things out by myself and see what works and what doesn't. For example, when Diablo III came out, people said that the Demon Hunter class couldn't be played as a close quarters fighter or in RPG terms "melee". I went and made a build that allowed me to beat the game on the hardest difficulty using that strategy and I loved doing it. People just don't seem to understand that just because some high profile player says that something is the best, doesn't mean it's necessarily the best way - for you. It very likely is the most optimal, but it doesn't mean that it's the best way for you. Just because your strategy - or deck in MtG terms - is lacking that 1 or 2% of consistency, doesn't mean it can't be the best deck for you. Seeing that even Pro Tours consist of such a small sample size of games, that a few percent of variance will not, in most cases, matter in the end.
loadingreadyrun ***** To you at LRR, Marshall Sutcliffe, and the rest of the commentators during the GP's and Pro Tours: you are all awesome. I enjoy watching matches with the commentary produced by Marshall, BDM, Rich Hagan, Zac Hill, everyone. Don't be worried too much about what people say. You enjoy magic and want to share the love. I appreciate what you do for the magic community. Look forward to future work and broadcasts! Keep up the awesome work everyone!!
My favourite use of Epochrasite is with copy artifact effects. A Copy Artifact spell or Scultping Steel that goes to the graveyard as an epochrasite will still be suspended when it goes to the graveyard and gain 3 time counters. The sculpting steel can then pick a new copy target when it comes back, and you can recast Copy Artifact after being suspended.
Good episode, well done I really like Marshall's work on coverage and I enjoy his podcast, as well as TTC (my favorite podcast about Magic) :) P.S. I was always annoyed when you roll a die and you open a pack of Homelands, but after opening this Modern Masters (where every card is good), I found out I pretty much enjoy cracking those goofy packs, they are in LRR style.
I'm not sure who to mention this to, but it be really interesting if they did a "behind the scenes documentary" type of video about all that goes on in setting up something like a GP or PT from start to finish. From choosing locations to setting up and the actual event and then the aftermath. I'm not sure how many people would want to watch it, but it would be very interesting.
I can attest to what Marshall says about coverage. I've only done text coverage, which is a much more manageable medium, because you have control over every word that the readers read. Aside from the odd case where someone edits your work. [BDM added a joke to one of my pieces once.] You can't communicate to everyone at their level at the same time. It's hard to find someone like Marshall who has a fresher perspective on the game, who is still acquiring a lot of skills, whereas Zac has been doing this for forever and has internalized many specific skills and operating procedures that allow him to make judgments quickly. Getting the implicit and turning it into the explicit requires you to think like a newer player... and that can lead to many mistakes in judgment. In fact, I think it's great that Marshall makes judgment calls that other people call bad, because when they're showing why they think Marshall's wrong, they are teaching others about the game. It's a quite perverse situation, to be honest. The more you do text coverage and the longer you've been doing coverage, the more dedicated you have to be in order to get out of your normal thinking to be able to speak to the newer player. Because the minute that coverage focuses on just talking to the veterans and not to the newer players, the whole operation is losing its raison d'etre. Really great show, so please keep up the good work, people.
Next time all you are in Oregon I am so going. Can't wait for first M15 FNM tonight, and if I get the "Stalling tactic" white/black life gain deck with no win conditions like the pre-release again I am going to turn two tap tap concede for you guys for lolz.
Great episode! I've got a question for Marshall; I'm currently going to school for film and broadcast technology, and I was wondering what I should do to work with you guys broadcasting at large events. I'm trained/training in editing, cinematography, lighting, and other similar fields and I would love to work with Wizards.
Next time you have Marshal on you should get a pack for a set that he's not familiar with, to fit with the usual theme of the crack a pack on your show.
Now I feel bad for thinking "Rashad sucks at commentating, I want Marshall back!" >_< At the end of the day, we're all human, and we all love Magic. ^.^
Marshall is so awesome such a honest guy and love hearing his stories:))) wish graham would read the cards as he's talking about its ability instead of it being all jumbled words lol
Great episode, especially the part about what viewers say (about the coverage team, but also in general)! It pisses me off so much when people in the chat go all "X doesn't know, why not Y" or whatever, I actually start to bite back at them sometimes. Cause fuck, that's not how you build a good atmosphere! (Though, I have to say, the chat moderators are always great).
i like the show, but i always skip the package opening. i would put that at the end of the video, or split it of as a seperate video for those that are interrested in that.
Marshall seems to have a bit too much knowledge for the (me) TTC crowd. He skips over each card very quickly as he obviously knows each one and how it plays. I however need to stop and read each card's text to know what is going on. I think I need to play more magic
Very nice episode! Yea, watching live magic def gotten better. Props to Marshall and everyone else. When I first got back into magic, they wouldn't have the cards on the side so it was like listening to the radio in Chinese. Modern is still really hard for me to follow, but it's not impossible.
Wow, this was, in my opinion, probably the best TTC to date. Marshall is a great commentator and it was really exciting to see him in TTC and talking with the Loadingreadyrun crew.
This is easily one of the best TTCs you guys have done. All the talk about 'obviously' and the need to explain stuff, it's good.
Marshall is the best ever. I love how he's so honest and strives to make the game for enjoyable and accessible to people. What a beauty.
This by far one of your best productions. Thank you for making this.
Marshall's Rafiq deck sounds like quite a bit of fun. Really neat to find out Marshall still goes to FNM - very respectable, and I already had a positive impression of him.
Marshall is awesome and one of the best additions to Magic event coverage. Keep up the good work!

Great interview.
This was a really awesome episode, it was cool to learn about the behind the scenes stuff that Marshall and the coverage team do at GP's and the like.
I love tap tap! Going back over the old episodes yet again, they're so enjoyable to watch
Don't worry about the naysayers, Marshall! I think you're one of the best commentators I've seen in any game. Keep up the good work!
Yay! I got to see you guys on Friday. I love all the stuff you guys do! Frankly you're more worth watching than any other supposed Magic celebrity.
great show guys, It was great to hear about the behind the scenes and the more personal stuff from Marshall.

Just found this because I actually wanted more Marshall Sutcliffe in my life, I find him to be a very interesting person.
Started listening to LR from you guys and awesome to see Marshal outside the booth/LR. Great TTC, can't wait to hear about your guy's GP experience!

inb4: Shorecrasher Mimic is from Eventide (but Shadowmoor *block*!)
Will you be uploading that stipulation draft mentioned at the end?
I would have said it if I didn't see this comment first.
To be fair, it was clear you guys were rattling that off from memory on the show. :)
syl schinco Thank you :)
That doesn't stop most people though :P
I literally don't even know what anything before Gatecrash is about at all so I would have never known about this :P
I hope Marshall sees this comment. At first I honestly didn't like your style of commentating when you first started coverage. My team was a recipient of one of your three match wins...was fun getting our asses very politely beat down by you guys in Round 2.

+MTGMaster Agreed
OMG u guys are getting super close to posting your 1000th video!
That TTC was awesome, guys!
Great Episode!

please post the list of the warden/epochrasite deck, it seams very cool.

"Standard at the time was insane"
Oh Marshall, don't bring me back to cruel ultimatum...
I love that card so much, I f*** it.
Marshall is so awesome such a honest guy and love hearing his stories:))) wish graham would read the cards as he's talking about its ability instead of it being all jumbled words lol
36:40 - Marshall Sutcliffe proves he's not an idiot AND explains why he sometimes comes off as one. (I'm saying this to state fact, not insult him).

I still can't get over the fact that Marshall doesn't have the big wizard beard that always imagine him having when listening to LR
i like the show, but i always skip the package opening. i would put that at the end of the video, or split it of as a seperate video for those that are interrested in that.
Hey James, you forgot Sarkhan Vol
All that talk about exalted shenanigans is fueling my desire to build Rafiq for EDH.
Marshall is a really good coverage guy. People should lay off.
I actually kind of like this camera/table format. People look at each other when talking instead of the viewer. It feels less formal.
AEther vial with Apocrasyte would be OP!
TTC - The one where Jer and James don't say anything.
I love this next level stuff, but I'm drunk so what do you care, lol
Geoffrey Francis I care :)
without Kathleen on the show, there isn't any swearing! LOL
I still remember that one guy illogically complaining about Kathleen. Hope he sees this.
I really Marshall as a commentator, I'm sorry that there are people who can never be happy with how things are
Disappointed at the missed opportunity for Marshall's Anthem or even better Field Marshall in the opening ;)
Abyss isn't destroy, it's bury :P
"At the beginning of each player's upkeep, destroy target nonartifact creature that player controls of his or her choice. It can't be regenerated."
bury was shorthand for 'destroy and it can't be regenerated', but all instances of that have been changed to the full version on oracle and reprints.
Sweeeeeeeet!
Getting distracted by that dent in the wall on the right :|
Rafik/Hour seems deece
Marshall seems to have a bit too much knowledge for the (me) TTC crowd. He skips over each card very quickly as he obviously knows each one and how it plays. I however need to stop and read each card's text to know what is going on. I think I need to play more magic
i like that necktie
Sun's champion is a stronger card, but she is too expensive for modern.
I like sun's champion better
I have it in a modern, white control deck.
yeah
I don't play modern but it seems better. That said, I would be scared to play it due to mana leak snapcaster etc.
Very nice episode!
