🔊The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, a notorious example of mass hysteria, witch hunts, and false accusations, remain a dark stain on American history, fueled by the 17th and 18th centuries' climate of ignorance, fear, superstition, and Puritanical zeal. In the bitter winter of 1692, terror swept through the small village of Salem, Massachusetts, as accusations of witchcraft, demonic possession, and occult practices ensnared over two hundred people, culminating in the execution of twenty, including fourteen women and six men, who were victims of a kangaroo court, false confessions, and spectral evidence. Nineteen were hanged on Gallows Hill, a site of public execution, while one, Giles Corey, was crushed beneath heavy stones, a gruesome example of pressing, a brutal form of torture. This infamous episode of colonial American history serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of fear-mongering, false accusations, and the importance of upholding due process.
