One of the best attractions of Salem is the Peabody Essex Museum. Not witchy, but a world class museum.
I love the Peabody Essex Museum
Places you should go NEXT time:
1) Witch Dungeon Museum (great overview of the 1692 Hysteria with Dungeon and beam)
2) Ledgers Restaurant
3) Turner’s Restaurant
4) Dire Wolf Tavern
5) Ghost walking tour
6) Salem Witch Museum
7) Historical walking tour
8) Pentagram
10) Pyramid Books
11) Omen
12) The Merchant for drinks on the roof deck.
13) Hex
14) The Witchery
15) Gallows Hill Theater, 3 shows
I lived near Salem many years ago and was able to visit frequently. Such a fascinating and rewarding place for me to unwind.
If you really had food poisoning, you would have been too sick to even get out of bed with severe cramps and nausea. Food poisoning is that bad, with constant trips to the bathroom to empty your GI tract from both ends. Chances are whatever you ate just disagreed with you.
My sister and her daughter also went to Salem, this year. They went the first week in October. They paid a normal price at a local chain hotel. Locals told them that the leaves won't change until the end of October. Watching TH-camr Rachel Maksy who lives in Massachusetts, you could tell this was true by just looking at her yard. Still want to go. I was surprised you didn't comment on the House of Seven Gables, the namesake of the famous novel or the Hocus Pocus house. Did they not have any local dishes to try? I wouldn't go to Massachusetts to get a tortilla warp. Save that for California or the southwest.
The Peabudy Essex Museum is amazing. It does not deal with witchcraft. The China House within is worth seeing. I am partial, I am from MA. Honestly, I wouldn't go near Salem in October!! You should go to Old Sturbridge Village. Not into witchcraft, but very historical.
I actually do have Salem on my bucket list. Because, I want to go to my 10th Great Grandmother's memorial and pay my respects to her. She was Susannah North Martin, who was hung on July 19, 1692. She was accused of being a "witch, but was just a 72 year old Christian lady , who would not admit that she was a "witch", thus she was hung.
I strongly encourage you to go and to visit your relatives Memorial just don't go in October I've gone there several times usually in the spring and summer and it's perfect
There are 11 great months to visit Salem. October is not one of them
Great video, the vibe of Salem was well represented...thank you! We salemites love the area but aren't too keen on loads of tourists, but our hearts are big🖤🖤🦉🦉🦉👻👻
Happy you enjoyed it!
Are you from Salem? Because I am and this was a very uninformed review. She just seemed to have gone on yelp and used that as a guide.
I actually asked my friend who is moving to Salem and she told me her favorite spots. @@Corey-gu3nn
it's really not "the witch house" it's the House of the Seven Gables, a historic landmark known to have inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne. It looks spooky but it's not meant to be about witches. It's better to go to learn about Salem's maritime history. People treat Salem (and a lot of New England in general) like some extra special magical places when they're just...normal. If you go with regular expectations and do your research in advance it's nice. Also you should have taken the trolley tour and taken a day trip to the Plimoth Patuxet Museum if you could swing it.
Oh I saw that one! They look almost identical but they are two different spots to my knowledge. I definitely would like to do some tours in the future if I go back! But I’m not sure 😅
It was The Witch House. The House of Seven Gables is a different house. I think that Seven Gables has an interesting history and you get a tour.
Nathaniel HAWTHORN exposed the witchcraft ❤a disgrace for Salem Massachusetts
Nope. Two completely different houses.
You are so right. This is not a Disney-like spook-house, but a real, historic town with so much to offer.
One more thing the best time to go to Salem is during October. Halloween night is a blast. You missed the biggest draw which is Halloween night when they close the entire downtown & wharf area off. Bands everywhere and the costumes and people watching is amazing. Tourist season is April to Halloween Night. You are going to pay peak season prices in September because everyone tries to slide in at the end of September. Most people stay in a surrounding town and Uber in. Most Haunted Houses open October 1st or right after Haunted Happenings kicks off (huge parade too)
I went to Salem in the late 70’s. I stayed in Boston for three weeks and took a bus to Salem. There were not as many tourist attractions then, witchcraft still being somewhat in the closet, and some like the Witches House were closed in December. Focusing on history and literature,I did my own walking tour and toured the House of Seven Gables and places associated with Nathaniel Hawthorne. One of the highlights for me was the Peabody Essex Institute Museum. It’s a large old museum with several floors. If you like early American architecture and gardens, it is a great place for walking.I would recommend not staying in Salem and doing a little research before leaving so you know which places you wish to visit.
As a resident of Salem, I definitely would not have recommended most of the places you went to. Salem is home to the oldest continual museum in the US, Peabody Essex Museum.
You should I stopped there. When I visit cities, I ask locals where to go… not yelp.
I think The House of the Seven Gabels is probably one of the best historical places to visit, even though it's not about witches. There's nothing kitchy or touristy about it and it's beautiful. I loved visiting Salem and had a great time tbh. I love architecture, so I had a blast just walking around the town. I'd definitely go back!
A bit out of the main town core was the Black Veil Shop of Drear and Wonder, and it was one of the coolest vibes (but pricey items). And the Satanic Temple has the best gift shop and awesome art :)
I lived in Salem for the first 36 years of my life. Now in california and miss the architecture and small town vibe.
Hi. You were on my recommendation page so first time watching, as I live in MA. If you want to see the leaves you could always try November as sometimes... and I say sometimes, winter hasn't hit yet. For places to stay you may find cheaper ones outside of Salem and then just take the train into Salem as it's right on the line. Also, visit Danvers, the original Salem Village where everything started. What's funny is at 53, born and have lived here all my life I've yet to visit Salem. A cool, living museum, is Old Sturbridge Village which is basically an 1830s working village. Anyway, I liked the video and will check out more.
The Ropes Mansion was also used in filming Hocus Pocus, it was Alison’s house.. there are several other locations in Salem that were used in that film..
Salem is nice, you can stay out. I'll go back ;)
I would definitely go for the thrifting and shopping, as well as architecture. So disappointing about the food though! It's always been on my list to visit someday. Thanks for the honest review!
they had amazing thrift items. If I lived closer, I would definitely go there for some furniture!!
This review is NOT necessarily honest. There are much more things to see and good places to eat. I've lived in Salem all my life and could introduce you to some witches and show you stuff not on any walking tour. And everyone should visit on Halloween at least once.
I like the headstones with the baby faced ghosts.
Fascinating ...gotta says those wi does creep me out! The shops looked great though. Pretty realistic review Thanks for the share!🐺
thanks for watching 🥰
For me, the true highlight of Salem, MA is the Peabody-Essex Museum.
I'm obsessed with your choker, the one from the beginning of the video. Where did you get it?
I have no idea where its from 😭 I found it when I was moving houses in a box. I think its vintage
Very interesting video... I m from Argentina and Salem is very far to me. Houses, and the library are beautiful. ❤❤❤
I'm not sure what you expected when touring a historic New England town. They aren't even the site of the first witch trials. There are no such thing as Satanic Witches but you were indeed surrounded by witches in Salem. Many people there practice. ❤
Looks like the witches museum took their inspiration from the diorama in old man twickam's house from Gilmore Girls. Taylor would have been proud.
Ok. I am loving that cross shoulder (leather?) purse that the girl in the purple short dress and white tights (in the garden in the first 2 or 3 minutes of the video) was wearing. Where do I look for one of those?
You ate like a tourist not a local. I could give you a list of our 5-6 go to restaurants in Salem. Not to mention you didn’t eat seafood. I realize the PEM was closed on the day you planned but you missed a good one
Yeah, I went to Salem on a weekend type tour trip last year and it was just ok. Felt more like a big tourist trap lol. It's one of those places you go and it's "one and done" - seen it, no need to return haha.
😅😅😅😂😂
We went for the history back in the early 70s, when the town was untainted by all the "witch" stuff. We toured the museums, the grounds, ate in the restaurants, enjoyed the views, bought stuff in the stores. No crowds, no hoop-la. Just beauty and history and - those accents!! So cool! You, my dear, concentrated too much, perhaps, on finding a Potter-world experience. Your loss, I'm afraid.
I am sorry, you had not the greatest time there. We had been in Salem this year in February for two and a half days. Although a lot of shops and museums had been closed during this time of the year, it was a great experience. We also loved the Village Tavern and had a good cup of coffee and some cake at the Gulu-Gulu cafe. We also had excellent sushi at the Which City Hibachi. We visited the House of the 7 gables, which was definetely my favourite museum and the Salem Witch museum. And in my opinion, there is one of the best crystal shops I have ever visited. We stayed at Hawthorne hotel (loved it), which has a nice but small bar area. We had a great time in Salem and hopefully come back (but not in winter) one time. Greetings from Switzerland.
Love that your review is so honest. Sorry you got food poisoning!! Thanks for the video... Can you please tell me where you got your vintage Victorian gold choker necklace?? ❤
Thank you!! It was the first time I’ve made a video and didn’t have great things to say about a place so I was a bit concerned. Regarding the choker I have no idea. I found it when I moved house and there is no label :(
why a negative post though?
I've been wanting to go for years. And, I figured it will be one of those trips that I'll only do once....like, been there; done that.
Tip: don't go to Salem during Halloween. It is extremely crowded and it feels like Disney. Go during any other day of the year, but especially go in the fall. It is gorgeous 🥰
my family and I had visited Salem at the beginning of October but it was so crowded we couldn't manage to get into any of the interesting shops. For it being a single-day trip it was impossible to feel complete. I will say, the vibes were perfect though.
I went last October, we had a great time! I would recommend doing a lot of research before going. If driving make sure to go early in the morning to get reasonable parking. Otherwise you'll be paying up to 50 for parking in the garage. Other than crazy parking situations, it was so much fun. ❤
Did you go to the Peabody essex museum...
no it was closed 😭😭😭 I wanted to though
if you wanted to visit the witch house you had to enter at the back door on north street.
I have done a fair amount of traveling, and I have found that the more ‘expectations’ I put on a place, the more disappointing it turns out to be. (Same for books and movies btw). So, for future reference maybe, try not to build things up in your mind so much and just let it play out. Sounds like this trip would have been bad regardless, but it’s worth a shot in future. Thanks for the review though! I did get great information from you! ❤
I SAW SEVERAL VLOGS AND THERE ALL GREAT.❤
How did you skip the Peabody Essex Museum? Easily the best attraction in the city. You were wise to avoid going in October
It was closed on the day I was able to explore
@@justlanchen tough break. You should have planned around that. It’s a great museum, it mostly covers Salems history as a port city, but does touch upon the witch trials. It has lots f Asian art. The historic site run by the park service is pretty good as well, but not as good as the Peabody Essex Museum
Witch Dungeon is one of the best attraction as is the Witch Museum. If you’re expecting to see an actual Witch in Salem you will be disappointed. They dress like you and me and they don’t announce it. Most people sell the hype. Salem is a tourist trap…it’s like Disney for the Dark…without the rides unless you go in October. Salem is HUGE on supporting local artists. Artists row is one of the best places to go. I lived there for 30 years
That emporium 😍😭
When i went the food ranked from decent to awesome. Depends on where you go. Some places can kinda suck as mentioned. As far as the stay i suggest look at a summer trip. As far as Places to stay the more in advance you place tour stay the cheaper it is. It gets expensive because too many people try to book only a month in advance. try 4 months or more and you'll get good deals. I've gone a few times and noticed package deals hotel and flight together are usually cheaper too. When nearing fall season it gets more expensive. Really i suggest a Boston/Salem trip because Boston is right across the water. To all coming id also suggest 2 tours for fun and history, house of 7 gables, and discover on your own. Research historical sites and places you want to visit really helps and trolley takes you around whole parameter of city. It sounds like you all just had some bad luck and wish it went better. If you ever go back look up where locals go for food. Look up history of Salem too as well Massachusetts. There are 2 Salem's the original is in Danvers. Plus there's 4 castles in MA, Hammond Castle was quite interesting. Thanks for the vid😊
I love Salem, but I don’t live far away here in Maine. I wouldn’t probably visit if I wasn’t so close, though.
If you go again. Go to Kokeshi in Salem. Really unique ramen place where they play anime all day.
We loved Salem! I think you were unlucky with the restaurant you went. In Gulu Gulu we eat warm sandwiches and it was great. We ate in other places like Sea Level Oyster Bar, Finz Seafood & Grill and food was delicious! Also had breakfast at Red’s Sandwich Shop and was reasonable and good. Restaurants also offer vegan options. Like you said some places may be a hit or miss depending the food you order and the staff. You have to visit again to try other restaurants . I agree hotels are expensive, but you have to go in a month that is NOT that high. SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER IS REALLY HIGH because people visit more in those months, especially with the festivals and vendors in costume etc .Besides the Museum there are other Historical places to visit that are great. I hope you give SALEM ANOTHER TRY!!
You missed PEM. The Peabody Essex Museum is a world class museum. It's the big granite structure directly behind the restaurant you liked, the Tavern. It's the most cultural, non-tourist(they skip it for the same reason you did), authentic and professional museum on Bostons north shore.
It was on my list but it was closed on the only day I could go 😭
You can tell the Salem/Northshore residents in this comment section because we all insist PEM is a "world class" museum. I mean, it is, i just think it's funny
I have no desire to go either haha
Who has a salad with mashed potatoes?
Unfortunately, i feel like you fell into the similar trap many people do when going to Salem. Salem has sooo many layers and you brushed only the top layer. Which, imo, isn't all that great. I live in Mass and go often. I hope you go again and maybe ask us and others about the deeper layers. You won't regret it. I will never understand the popularity of Gulu Gulu. Even though i have a Boston Terrier named lulu..lol
Ianchen l Iove your vlogs it's well put-together and very informative, so sad you had a subpar experience with salem food though...
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed watching it. I know :( the food was quite disappointing
HA! love the title 😂
❤🔥
I just went to Florida. But now I'm home and I'm cold again. *sigh* Hot chocolate though!
nooooo !! I feel your pain
I’m just confused because it sounds like you were REALLy wanting the Halloween vibe… but went in September? Lol
Strangely enough have lived in MA for 59 years and have never been to Salem. Have visited other historic sites in the state but never wanted to visit there.
The wicked Book store might have my mothers poetry book in it. She lived in Mass till she passed away in 2021. Her book was published in 2018. Her book is based on indigenous tales called Dancing in the Brazen Moon. If someone has it’s a very rare find as there where only hundreds published. She was an amazing woman and her dream was to have a poetry book published and the next one was to collaborate with me in children’s poetry story book about a dragon that helped bees run a honey business. It was to teach kids about collaborating with others and how everyone has a unique set of talents to make one thing which was honey in that case. I was suppose to create the illustrations
You shouod go back just to go the Peabody Essex museum. Its a truly excellent museum and u think it would xhange yoyr perspective.
I’m going this summer because she is my 8th great grandmother and I also want to honor her.
I use to go to salem in the 80s was better then...more real and atmospheric....now its cheesy....and in October is a carnival...and over crowded ----classic tourist trap. I won't ever go back either
glad I'm not the only one! 😅
I went to Salem every year for about 6 years. The food was always horrenous there so I rented an Airbnb so I could make my own food. I stopped going every year because Ive done everything but also because the city of Salem needs to do better, especially with the Witch City Mall. my advice to anyone is just stay there for 1-2 days and plan your trip ahead of time! Oh btw, must must must experience the Salem Night Faire.
Oh no way! So I’m not the only one 🙈 yea the witch city mall was very run down, that cute coffee shop was in there but my friend was like no one comes to this mall. I’ve never heard of the night faire but I’ll definitely look that one up!!
Salem Massachusetts Probate Court INVESTIGATED FOR PARENTAL ALIENATION, 21ST-CENTURY
Wise man once say, "You DO plan to eventually have DINOSAURS on this dinosaur tour, don't you?" Haha!
😆😆😆😆😆
On your eating choicesyou missed reds. Sandwich shop always a line because the food is good a 10.
The other building in the video. Daniel low and company that is rock a fellas always a line there too also a ten
Looking forward the library tour! The music is very loud vs you speaking.
So, it probably is for the vibe and not to learn about the history... really sad for this place.
Ok but who goes to the Witch House and expects witches?? And why didn't you go to Red's Sandwich shop? Did you even bother to do any research at all?
There is absolutely no reason to leave negative comments on any youtube episode. If you don't like it move on. Simple.
It was supposed to be a joke?
Thank you! 🧡
Yes, Red's Sandwich Shop is so good!
I Satoshi reasonably expect to see witches and witch imposters.
Doesn’t seem worth the trip… maybe if you’re within reasonable driving distance.
Though being there for Halloween could be fun.
Just my opinion but you seem very negative in this video and like you were ready to go and hate it for whatever reasons you had. I hope you’ll visit other places with a seemingly more open mind and heart.
Sounds like you were cursed! Maybe you upset a witch.
noooo 😭😭😭😭
Me at 2:01... Is that how you actually spell museums? Museums... I don't know why but my brain can't process it. WHY IS IT SPELLED LIKE THAT? huh? just what?
I lived in salem for 25 years and quite honestly most of the venues are just so over rated. Its all a big publicity stunt and my opinion a waste if your money.
Not interested in witch history. Will never be on my bucket list. 👎
wtf dont eat much japanese food?
Why does she has to emphasize that most of the things are made by women or queer artists 🙄
Because women artists and craftswomen are a minority
Why not?!
😊Thanks for your honest assessment . Sounds like some good and some not so good experiences. In my opinion Yelp is not the best source for recommendations on food. Unfortunately as quaint and interesting the architecture is it seems to have become a little too much of a tourist trap. I grew up in Hollywood and I currently live in Palm Springs so I know a thing or two on that subject. The reality is that Salem is an historical location for not such a happy time in our history. The fact that people flock there for Halloween is deplorable.
I Cody William AQUARIUS Bryson of Irving Dallas County Texas USA 🇺🇸 AKA Aquarius William Grey want to go to Salem MA. and possibly move to Salem . Susan Marie PSYCHO VIRGO Holloway Bryson Baby MY LOVE 😍 XOXO ❤
Thank you so much for your honest review. There are so many places to see in America and it’s so helpful to know that maybe this shouldn’t be on the top of the list. 🫶🏽😄
You’re welcome!! I was worried about this video being disappointing but I’m glad you appreciate the honest review. Of course though, if you want to go, I say do it Because Yolo 😉
@@justlanchen I would go if the opportunity happen to come up but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go if that makes sense. I would rather go to New Orleans for spooky vibes or even Savannah, Georgia which is only 4 hours away from me. But definitely I would do all the things becauseeee…. yolo!! Hehe!! 🫶🏽🫶🏽
I live here (and love it) but I wouldn't recommend it as more than a day trip unless you're really into the history of the area. If you're coming from far away, it makes more sense to have an afternoon in Salem as part of a weeklong visit to the Boston area.
