The whole RWBY OST is full of songs that are fantastic as standalone pieces, but the true kick to RWBY tracks is hearing the song in context with seeing the scenes during which they are played. These two in particular, Part 1 was the background for the Red trailer which was basically a character showcase for the R of RWBY, Ruby Rose. Part 2 was the backdrop for Team RWBY's first team fight in the show against a creature called the Nevermore. If you curious, you can look up both scenes to hear the songs in context. No matter what, great reaction. Seeing someone new get into the RWBY OST is always great. My personal top two are Like Morning Follows Night and Bad Luck Charm. Would love you see you do one of those two next.
    Red Like Roses Part 1
each line is a bit of a character intro for the characters that make up Team RWBY
1: Ruby Rose-Her mom died while on a mission and she wants nothing more than to protect people just for the fact that it's the right thing to do and she has the ability and power to do so.
2: Wiess Schnee-Heiress who has to live up to the perfect expectations of an abusive father.
3: Blake Belladonna-Considered a beast by most, wants nothing more than to unite everyone despite their differences.
4: Yang Xiaolong-Ruby's older sister is a hotheaded tough girl but still cares a lot about her image both physical and reputationally speaking. She's associated with fire.
    Red Like Roses Part 2
Ruby and her mom Summer are talking to each other here.
Love the musical storytelling. How much you were able to pick up on without knowing the show lore just goes to show how well the songs were done.

Jeff Williams is well-known by many of the music producers/reactors on TH-cam for his chromatic transitions and themes, I don't recall anyone who has pointed them out before to say anything bad about them, and Jeff uses them quite often in many of the songs he's produced for RWBY. It's always fun to see who'll pick up on them next, and it makes me super glad you did too!
As a quick edit, just heard your final thoughts and I can confirm you're right about why you didn't connect with it. Early-on, Jeff composed many of his songs to fit closest with the videos/animation they'd be accompanying, which is great for the sake of the show and of course that's what he should be focused on anyhow, but for just a music reaction it simply wouldn't cut it. Pt. 2 doesn't hinge as much on the episode it aired in as much as Pt. 1 does with the "Red" trailer, but both do make more sense instrumentally with the videos they accompany. Obviously there's no need to do a video reaction to the Red trailer and the episode that Pt. 2 aired in, but if you'd like to try and find that connection with them both I'd heavily recommend watching them on your own time.

Red like roses pt. 1 1:42.
Red like roses pt. 2 4:50.
The one that send in the request, well done, you have good taste xD.
The rest of my comment will be spoilers. You are warned.
But yes, Red like roses 1 is mostly the introduction song, aired with the very first RWBY trailer, being the Red trailer and this gives us a very quick introduction on the 4 main characters.
*"Red like roses, fills my dreams and brings me to the place you rest"* is the red character being Ruby Rose, sadly her mother is said to have lost her live during a mission and Ruby doesn't want others to go through the same thing (that someone has to grow up without one (or both) of their parents. This has giving Ruby the drive to become as the heroes in the stories her sister used to tell her.
*"White is cold and always yearning, burdened by a royal test"* is about our white character being Weiss Schnee (literal translate is White snow) who is my favorite character and that because of the ammount she has changed in the story, she is the heiress to one of the biggest companies that refines and sells dust (basicly elements like ice, fire, wind, lightning that is also used in combat, but also in everyday items like Yang's bike that runs on combustion dust) and her father is basicly shaping Weiss in her own image to take over the company one day.
*"Black the beast descents from shadows"* is about the black character named Blake Belladonna and the reason they say "Black the beast" is because Blake is classed as a Faunus, people might not know what faunus are, they are humanoids that have an animal trait. There are so many differend kind of faunus in the world of RWBY and some of them have a tail or claws or ears. Sadly the faunus and humans are not yet equal and there is alot of oppression and racism agains the faunus, she wants to break that circle eventually and come out of the shadows instead of hiding who she is.
*"Yellow beaty burns gold"* is about our last character the yellow character being Yang Xiao Long and she is indeed a yellow beauty, but that would be to easy to say, she is flawed as she can be extremely stubborn, she can burn like no other, but this also means she loses controle.
For the Part 2. This song is more of a song on Ruby's thoughts and feeling and specially about the feelings toward her mother, as Ruby doesn't understand why she had to leave and left Ruby alone. Where we do find out in the second part where we hear Ruby's mom (Summer) speak that she was planning to get back home after she finished her mission, but that wasn't what happend and feels *guilt* that she isn't there for Ruby. Then the 3rd part where their conversations interwine, finishing the song with a nice bow.

It's fascinating that you picked out that it sounds like Babymetal.
The creators were heavily inspired by Babymetal when creating the character of Ruby (the prospective singer of the song).
Her outfit, the music, and many other features were inspired by Babymetal, with the creator even going so far as saying that the character listens to Babymetal when the show shows her wearing headphones.

Wish I could afford to donate to get you to listen to more RWBY music lol There’s so many great tracks to check out… This was from the first season, so even though it’s one of my favourites still, the quality improves a bit generally as the show goes on… Oh well, on the off chance that you feel like reacting to some more later for the hell of it, I’d recommend trying “This Life is Mine”, “Ignite” and maybe for something a bit different, “Friend”… Oh and I should probably include a slower ballad too… “All that Matters” I think is nice… But yeah, that’s just scratching the surface really.
Personally I wouldn’t call RWBY an anime… It’s definitely inspired by it, but while I’m willing to let not coming from Japan slide, I could pretty easily tell it apart from other anime… The animation, the storytelling/writing, the pacing etc… It feels western to me… That doesn’t make it bad or anything, it’s just different… But if you really want to call it an anime, I’ll leave it up to you lol.

If I had to pick a personal top five tracks from RWBY, in order of appearance, it would probably look something like this: I May Fall, Time to Say Goodbye, Sacrifice, The Path to Isolation, & Nevermore. The Path to Isolation would probably be my top pick among those five songs, and Sacrifice would follow closely thereafter. I absolutely recommend checking some of them out. Even if on your own time, since I know you probably don't want to oversaturate your content with any one piece of media in particular. Anywho, Red Like Roses is good, but Pt I lacks the strong vocals most RWBY songs have, and Pt II's lyricism, while telling a moving story, isn't quite on par with some of RWBY's better tracks. It's certainly not a bad first impression for the tracks in the show, though. In any case, this was an incredible breakdown, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and commentary, and I can't wait to see what track you react to next!

Honestly, they've only gotten better as time's gone on. Casey Lee William's voice has matured (some compare her to Hayley Williams), and Jeff's composition skills have gotten incredible.
If you're interested in doing a deeper dive into it, I'd recommend listening to the full version of "Let's Just Live". Towards the latter half of the song, there's a massive wall of sound that comes onto the field. Gives me goosebumps every single time.
Or hell, "This Life is Mine" is another smash hit.

Now you should watch the VIDEO'S for Part 1 and Part 2!
Part 1 is set best by beat to the actions of it's video ( it's the very first Trailer for the show.. **The RED Trailer** ).. Part 2 is the background music for a kick-ass action scene that was the turning point that locked in the viewership for the series..
Basically once you watched **Volume 1 Chapter 8** you were hooked on the Series

As some context, Red Like Roses is the theme song for the character Ruby Rose in the show. For story reasons, her whole character design, including her name, is tied directly to the color red (almost every character has a distinctive color tied to their character design and/or name).
The first few lyrics at the beginning where he remarked on the singer's falsetto has 4 parts, each referencing a different character: 'red like roses' referring to Ruby; 'white is cold' referring to Weiss Schnee, whose name literally means "white snow"; 'black the beast' referring to Blake Belladonna, who is part cat; and 'yellow beauty' referring to Yang Xiao Long, Ruby's sister.
These lines at the very beginning of the song are, as far as I know, the only lyrics in part I of the song, which was released with the original character intro video for Ruby before volume 1 was released, hence why the lyrics are mostly meant to reference each of the 4 main characters in the show, and why it's a much calmer piece.
Part II of the song is a lot more intense, due to the fact it first appeared during a major fight scene in the show. The rest of the lyrics, where the analysis starts, are in part II of the song. I believe the person who died in the song is supposed to refer to Ruby's mother Summer, who died on a mission (they are hunters/huntresses fighting monsters to save humanity).

Someone else has mentioned that the singer (Casey Lee Williams) was like 13 when this song came out. I would like to add that she has since gone to Berklee for music and made her own band called Ok Goodnight and they are all so talented. It has been a pleasure to hear Casey's voice mature as she has reached adulthood. She's so passionate and amazing

The requester mentioned that this show came out when they were in high school, and that’s the same for me too. To think that it’s been 8 years that this show has been going on for. Time really has flown, hasn’t it?
I remember when the Red trailer first came out and how excited I got for a show I knew nothing about. My hype only increased with each consequent trailer, and it genuinely peaked with Yellow. Red Like Roses, Mirror Mirror, and I Burn have been some of my personal favorite songs ever since and I still listen to them all the time. I wouldn’t doubt a good half of my love for them is nostalgia, but they are great hype songs that always manage to pump me up and make me feel ready for whatever I’m doing at the time of listening to them. Red Like Roses especially though has always held a special place in my heart for being the start of a series I love and have such fond memories of (and also because the song is just so dang good)!
