I'm generally not a huge fan of this genre of game but Hades was such a shift in the way rogue-likes play. I still have a long way to go before I beat it properly but I've had a blast listening to the soundtrack and experiencing some of these more powerful tunes.

The best part of this song is that when you talk to Orpheus after it's played Zagreus compliments him about it, which basically means Darren is complimenting his own music

As you progress in Hades you eventually get a message from Orpheus to Euridice - a song. They both sing it, but when they sing it alone, you can detect the mode that they're in and also the fact that, generally, Orpheus sings in a minor key, but Euridice sings in a major key. When you put them together, with no alterations, you get this more "complete" version of the song that features the totality of their experience - their love, in a way that is truly uplifting, if still bittersweet.
The most bittersweet part of Orpheus and Eurydice’s story is that even though they end together, they cannot live with one another. Ever and always present, yet can never touch. No children, only the eternal future even if in the Eleusian Fields. That’s the saddest part for me when Orpheus turns and loses Eurydice again; he was so close to the future he was robbed of and could’ve had.

I can say that playing this game during it’s early access through a year and finaly getting to listen to this song at the credits of it’s complete version, it brought a tear to my eye because it felt like the best reward someone could get after playing for so long. Love this game so much

My favorite part of this song is the little leitmotif, the one in the melody when they say "who cares when you're gone," among other snips (live ever on, all but our own), is the death jingle. If you've made it to In The Blood, you've probably heard the "you died" motif a dozen times. It recontextualizes that jingle into this whole song, but it also de-contextualizes the full lyric.
You hear "home is not where you live, but who cares when you're gone." But your ear perks up for the "who cares when you're gone," which, alone, sounds like an insult. Something papa Hades might say. When you go back again and hear the jingle, it makes me kinda repeat the lyric that fits, like that's what Zag is thinking. Who cares? Likewise with "live ever on," for an immoral respawning god about to walk out of a pool of blood in his dad's court.
i never even realized those were the same melodies, i fucking LOVE when games and stories repurpose leitmotifs in clever ways like that
Wow I also never realized that, exactly. I know a large number of music pieces in the game are based on Hades' own leitmotif, which is that iconic 4 chord melody that plays, among other times, over the menu when you first launch the game. The death "jingle" is a slight modification of it, and most of Tartarus' music pieces are centered around it or feature it prominently in the battle sections. It's also, as one might expect, the musical cornerstone for all three versions of the Hades fight music. Honestly the way Darren Korb composed this game reminds me of Sondheim, especially Sweeny Todd, due to his absolute dedication to this one musical idea that appears throughout the entire game in new and interesting places.
"home is not where you live, but who cares when you're gone" can be dually interpreted positively as well. "Home is where the heart is." Home is with those you keep company with, those you confide in, those who mutually love, with those who care when you're gone.
@@idionym6817 this is how I read it, also. Home is wherever you have people around you that would miss you if you were gone. I honestly didn't think of the other way, but i could kinda see that, too.
For context this plays when Charon caries Zagreus and Persephone from the surface back to Hades on the river Styx. Also at this point Orpheus and Eurydice are still separated and haven't been reunited yet which is why they aren't in harmony with each other. After reuniting Orpheus and Eurydice you will sometimes find them playing Good Riddance or In the Blood together when you visit Eurydice in Asphodel.
Hades' entire OST is a masterpiece. In the blood is a good example as their are few vocal tracks. Hymn to Zagreus is also a great one.
My favorite composition is Good Riddance performed by Euridice, and later Orpheus, and after their reunion by both of them. And "Painful way" is really catchy and energised.
I love good riddance, haven't heard painful way yet are they gonna sing it after Orpheus and eurydice's "story"? . My favorite has got to be lament of orpheus. I'm a sucker for sad haunting songs

When I saw Zagreus in the thumbnail and 'in the blood' in the title, my mouth was wide open, and I just went "no f'king way".
I just love this song. My first playthrough of this game was on hell mode, I just thought it would be apt. So, 102 runs in when I finally reached this song, it was a mix of several emotions. I won't spoil it for you since you haven't reached there yet, but it was the moment I realised that through all my struggles trying to beat this game, after having gone through literal hell multiple times, having seen this disfunctional family; it had started to connect to me, to the situation I was in at the time, feeling stuck and everyday feeling like I was going through the same motion. The road to getting there had thoroughly exhausted me, but this moment made me feel like it was worth it.
This is what made Hades one of my favourite video game stories ever told, and it was thanks in no small part to the great music by Daren korb that the scene hit the way it did.
It's really great, somehow reflect to what Hades is all about.
*Rebellion* : Zagreus breaking through the Underworld, against Hades's rule and words.
*Reconciliation* : The House of Hades was really dysfunctional, like everyone is on their own business, still connected yet distant. But Zagreus makes them reconnect through his actions.
*Acceptance* : Zagreus learn something that changes his perspective of Hades, of everything and everyone in the Underworld. And although he was shocked, he accepted it, slowly.
And *changes* : And what Zagreus did changes Underworld, Hades and even his relative on Mt Olympus.
At least in my perspective when I first played this in my years on High School
My only comment is to now listen to all the vocal tracks from Supergiant's catalog, particularly Transistor. =3 Darren's scores are all amazing and change to fit each game's setting, and Ashley's voice is just heavenly. Also, I think Hades is the first time Darren has actually sang, let alone lend his voice.
Actually Darren also sung in Pyre! He sung "Never to return"!
I heartily second the Transistor recommendation. "Paper Boats" is one of my top 10 songs from any video game.
I couldn't agree more. Darren's writing is great and Ashley is such a strong alto and I love when Darren comes in as a counter tenor in songs with her.
Oh my god, hard agree on Transistor. The whole OST is great, but the songs with lyrics are flawless. I think Signals might be my favorite, but any of the others - In Circles, The Spine, We All Become, Paper Boats - would single-handedly elevate a lesser game's soundtrack.
Darren sang for the first time in Bastion, in Zulf's theme.
Darren Korb really does love his dualities in his music. Back in Bastion, the track Setting Sail, Coming Home ends up combining two other character's disparate themes into a single tune for the climax, and in Hades, the song Good Riddance is sung by two separate characters in two separate ways, but carries an entirely different tone when they are finally able to sing together again.
Always loved his folksy bluegrass rhythms intertwined with modern stylings. His music really is iconic.
Supergiant’s games have always been some of my favorites, and Hades was no exception. It quickly became one of my all-time favorite games. I always find Darren Korb’s music to be exceptional, and In The Blood was probably in my favorite song of the game with Good Riddance right behind it. Darren and Ashley’s vocals are always excellent, and Darren’s music helps to further shape the environment of Hades and give a feel that wouldn’t have been there with any other music.

That's the line that really stuck with me. As someone who finally found belonging and "my people" thousands of miles from where I was born, origin means a lot less to me than finding a genuine place.

I know everybody is excited for him playing the game but this is a game that’s very story driven so it’s very easy to spoil so please control yourselves
Hades has an incredible soundtrack that fits the game and what's happening, but also gets you pumped up.

Everyone except those of us who were already fans of SuperGiant games, they have always delivered borderline flawless quality, especially in the visual and soundtrack departments! So happy that they are getting the attention they deserve!
I'd never thought of the lyrics super deep as you suggested since I, admittedly, really only took it at face value of Zagreus trying to reach the surface and see his mother who he believes he belongs with, and no matter how much he runs he, and his godly family, will return to the underworld to try again. It's super interesting how you interpreted it the way you did! Really glad you're listening to and playing Hades though, it's a favorite of mine. Transistor's, another game by the same studio, music is also suuuuper great
I think your interpretation of the lyrics holds together. The ties of family, found or born, sustain us on our journeys. Literally speaking, it could also be seen as encouragement to hold on to the bonds we have and make them right if at all possible, as Zagreus finds himself doing throughout the plot. It's not by folding to demands or expectations, but by confronting and resolving issues that have been buried. It's difficult and doesn't come without trouble, but everyone grows from healing their old hurts.
Aaaay glad you got around to this! Supergiant has always done insanely well with it's soundtracks, so if you haven't already you should check out Bastion and Transistor on top of Hades. All three make me shiver because of the soundtracks every time. I especially love transistor's soundtrack because I'm a sucker for dual vocals, kind of like Hades' "Good Riddance"
If you decide you cant dedicate the time to completing the story of the game, I would 1000% recommend finding a compilation of the Hades story to watch. It is an extraordinary interpretation of the Greek mythos and explores aspects of the relationships the Greek pantheon have with one another. The Credits scene that this song accompanies is just so perfect that it is impossible to skip. Without going into too much spoiler territory, they really did nail the themes of No Escape (the motif that follows everything and plays during Zag's return) and then blend it and the other theme into In the Blood. And since there is still plenty game and story after the credits... its not really an ending song but a rebirth into the next chapter. I am so excited to see the direction they take Hades 2!
Oh my gosh. In the Blood is one of my favorite songs of all time. I can listen to it on repeat all day. It never fails to have an effect on me. I was so happy to beat the game for the first time and hearing it. Felt like the best victory ever. This song makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. Hades soundtrack is easily some of the most incredible original music I have EVER heard made for a freaking video game. Loved hearing what you had to say about this song.
I won't spoil it but this song really sums up the main themes of Hades as a game. If you ever play the game you'll really pick up on those particular themes.

I think it would be great if you do one of those live streams and react to all the Hades osts, because a lot of them slap so hard
I would recommend "Dark Impetus", "Dismiss", or "Rage Awakened" from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has absolutely amazing music that never fails to astound me.
How I interpret this song (without thinking too deeply on it, just instinct) is that while they're singing about the same thing, they definitely have different vibes. The lyrics are about the fact that no matter how hard you try to escape it, you will always be the child of your parents: your family will always be there for good or for bad. There is tragedy in that, a futility that is unavoidable, and Orpheus is someone who is intimately familiar with futility. So he sings it tragically. There is also comfort in knowing that there is always a place to go home to, and your family is not only the ones related by blood but also the ones who will miss you when you are gone: no matter your choices, the same foundation of love will persist. Eurydice has made choices, and seen the love of her life fail at saving her. But more importantly, she saw him *try* to save her in the first place. She gave up after that, but there was always comfort in the knowledge that someone loved her enough for that. Her home is warm (and not just because of the lava) and she cooks for Zagreus. Comfort is her side of this song and of this story.
At least that's how I look at it!
While Ashley and Darren are on your radar i highly recommend Setting Sail/Coming Home from bastion,
or maybe even better: the version from their anniversary album titled "Remember the Bastion",
which has a beautiful rendition of both songs tied together with a really well done little soundtrack medley.
What makes the song so memorable to me is how the lyrics stay the same,
but through learning more about the world of the game their meaning changes drastically multiple times throughout a playthrough.

You first hear the song when you find the singer, a single survivor of the calamity singing just for herself.
The song suggests some fear, but a strong determination to, by working together, build a new home. To try even even if it can't last forever.
Then you learn about the ura, the people who've wrote the song, and come to understand what the text actually means.
Its a declaration of war from the ura who build their homes underground, to the caelondians,
mocking their fortified city and promising that one day, they will come to tear it down.
Later still you learn more about the singer:
Zia the ura girl who never actually saw in the lands of her origin.
She grew up in the city of caelondia living with her father,
who, after the ura lost in prior conflicts with the caelondians, was send tothe city to work with their scientists, as part of the peace treaty.
While he taught her some of their people traditions, including the song,
he didn't want his daughter to suffer from the conflict and taught her little to nothing about the war that had happened.
I'm so glad you did this one! The emotion of this song caught me so off guard the first time I heard it at the end of the game. I wept like a baby, and it still brings tears to my eyes. It's so beautiful and I loved your read on it. Happy New Year!
i love this so much! what a great reaction to an amazing song.
I couldn't stop listening to the song for weeks after i first heard it in the game. when it happens it's all these emotions coming together: from the narrative, from your own journey with the game as a player but also from the topic that hits you as a person no matter if you've got any knowledge about the game or not.
Hades is the only time the music of the moment was enough to make me cry.
Both In the Blood and the Farewell duet had me stopping to dab at my eyes to stem tears

one of my absolute favourite things about videogame music (both soundtracks and fan music) is the way that the meaning of the song taken in isolation can sometimes be quite different from what it becomes in context of the game, and other times carry most or all of the same meaning.
"in the blood" works really well because the same lines that are about the inescapablilty of grief are about zagreus leaving again and again, and always returning through the styx, about the way your actions throughout the course of the game change the House of hades into Zag's home for the first time.
Honestly I just love ashley's voice. Hearing red hum her songs in transistor is both nostalgic and sad. I cried so hard at the end of that game. It sort of makes sense that the song is a bit tragic sounding given how sad most greek legends are. Rarely do characters end up happy.
The entire soundtrack is just incredible. Every song is just so fitting and haunting, easily one of my favourite games of all time due to the voice acting, music and characterisation. I never get tired of it. That and I’m a huge Greek mythology nerd.
I absolutely love the music in this game. Can't wait for Hades 2. Had not expected you to cover this but am glad you did. In the game you randomly can come across Eurydice in Asphodel, where she spends eternity singing to herself and I always spend a minute or two listening to her songs instead of rushing on to the next combat encounter.

Every single Supergiant game revolves around the music. The music dictates the pace and the atmosphere. Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades and eventually Hades 2 are always defined by the amazing sound quality and the masterful use of music.

I cant express enough how much i love the "my dearest kin beneath the skin" line building into what sounds like anger, passion... battle. Like what you have to do to escape the Underworld. GOD this game's music is peak!
I just barely bought and played this game this past summer, but I have been listening to this song for YEARS. One of my favs ever.
hades' themes and music hits so hard for me, I adore that the leitmotif you hear when they sing "who cares when youre gone" appears EVERYWHERE, when you go back to playing this game after hearing it in in the blood (during the credits), it reminds you of the people who care about zag. Even now in hades 2 you hear that leitmotif. I think if i remember right its the beginning (or even the only part) of No Escape, the music when you die in hades 1. That leitmotif is EVERYTHING, its the signal that youre returning to the house of hades, its hades himself, its zag, you heard it when you open the game. This leitmotif will be something that I remember forever.

I think my big eye opener on the Hades sountrack was “Good Riddance” the duet version with Orpheus and Eurydice. Its the perfect completion of Orpheus’ Lament and kind of a great song for zagreus escaping the underworld.
Not only was this video a New Year's Eve miracle to see, but you touched on a game that is probably the reason I got through the pandemic with some measure of my sanity intact, given how up-ended my life was. A story about tenacity, familial bonds, and learning that nothing can be done by running from problems, all executed with Supergiant's pedigree for games? This game, like Final Fantasy XIV and the NieR games, will stick with me for the rest of my life
I cant help but disconect my feeling of listening to feeling while playing. This is from when you finish the main quest and to me this song feels like a release. It isnt the end but you get to exhale and accept the achievements you have made. There is bittersweet elements, but also hope, which is verymuch where you are left of as this song plays.
I actually got introduced to Darren Korb because had a friend do her senior thesis on VGM using his work on Bastion as a case study. I was stoked to see how much Hades crashed into the scene because he's been a soundtrack powerhouse for Supergiant for ages and now I have more people to yell about it with. 😙👌

Besides loving this game so much, which is a testament about how good it is because I wasn't a fan of roguelikes and roguelites, Darren Korb is one of my favorite video game composers. I met him and Supergiant Games' gems through Bastion and the music was already pretty good there, and with every game it just seems to peak more and more. I really should buy Hades' OST already when I have more money to spare.
Also, when I reached the point in the game where this song plays, I started crying. And I think that's one of the best compliments you can give a song

The amazing thing about this song and the game is that it is both sincere, haunting yet enticing and taunting our protagonist that he is who he is, no better or more different than his Pantheon - his blood his kins. No spoiler: since he is a young god dare questioning how older immortal gods running things and killing, manipulating one another eventhough they are family and relatives of one big, bloody Greek tragedy. I love this take for modern storytelling.

Man I wish I could buy Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett a beer; I love their music so, so much. I was glad to see you zero in on a couple of those lyrics, particularly "Home... is not where you live, but who cares when you're gone..." which is such a succinct, poignant way of expressing a whole mountainous tangle of human wants, needs and longings. Also, to your point about video game music being special for adding an extra layer of contextual meaning onto things since there are also specific places within the game where tracks play, hearing "In The Blood" in its proper context takes it from "I have some tears building up but it's not a big deal" to "oh whoops there goes half my box of tissues." I always took interest in Hades as a game. The music actually made me buy the game and I do not regret a single second. The music in the game just hits every dopamine receptor in my brain
My initial thoughts before watching the video:
I absolutely LOVED "In the Blood" and every other track with vocals in the OST. This one in particular, though, evokes a feeling of "It's okay/It will be okay" to me, given the context of when it plays and the lyrics. Like if everyone is coming in for a hug while the camera pans out.
After watching the video:
You hit the nail on the head with your analysis, this song is absolutely about consolation, it's about family, rebuilding those bonds. The game itself is one of my favorites of all time and one of the best games I've played, and the soundtrack is also one of the best I've heard. Highly recommend listening to the soundtracks of the other games that Supergiant developed, they're all such good listens.

The whole Hades OST is so good and unique, and this song is the cherry on top. And if the trailer was any indication Hades 2's music won't disappoint either!
I did not pick up Hades immediately but after dozens and dozens of hours I think it's a goddamned masterpiece, the music elevates it to an A+++ game. I often use the soundtrack as bgm while i work
I bought Hades as an early Christmas gift to myself in 2021. The year after, the Hades soundtrack was at the top of my Spotify wrapped in all categories. I think that says it all. (I still play Hades at least one round every night before I go to bed.)
Haven't played Hades yet, but Supergiant Games have been making great games one after another. And each one has amazing music. Just to name one from each game.
Bastion: "From Wharf to Wilds."
Transistor: "We All Become."
Pyre: "In The Flames."
And the best part? The three listed are just the trailer song of each game.

well, now that you've reminded me how good it is, I'll be listening to it on loop again. For days.
i heard this song while randomly playing hades while hanging with friends. I had to randomly zone out, put on both headphones and just sink into the only time id hear this song like this. i was smiling like an idiot with tears in my eyes and im sure at least one of my friends saw me and was like "wtf is going on with them hello?" but i was so happy and fulfilled. to this day i wish i hadn't been in such a social situation while experiencing this song because I definitely would have been more emotional and more focused on what was happening but it was still so memorable regardless because the storytelling is so good
In the Blood is one of my faves in the OST, even though I only started playing Hades very recently! I've been a Supergiant/Darren&Ashley fan since Transistor, so this is such a treat. They are so absurdly good, hnnng! And I love how the lyrics talk so much about the mixed feelings we might have with our family ties and how much we might or might not feel like we belong with them for various reasons (which is _very_ relatable to me, personally). And as someone who loves symphonic metal w/ female vocals, this really scratches all of my itchings on that regard, specially on the final part when the song REALLY picks up and the orchestra SWELLS UP in such an epic manner!
And speaking of Darren&Ashley and Supergiant!!! There was a concert celebrating Supergiant's 10th Anniversary a couple of years ago, where D&A sing songs from all the games accompanied by a full orchestra - which was arranged and conducted by our man, our legend himself, Austin Wintory. HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't seen it yet, it's full on youtube. Maybe a livestream watch of it in the future? 👀
OH YES FINALLY HADES AGAIN! I just recently played hades again after so long. "God of the Dead" and "The Unseen Ones" are definitely worth to listen to! In the Blood also great and moving, emotionally speaking, I felt Zagreus's struggle in his adventure and in his family too, but resolved pretty strongly by the word "it's in the blood", and I resonate to that so hard.
When I reached the credits I just could do nothing but clap and amaze at the music

This song is so gorgeous and it’s the perfect ending song to listen to after fighting your way through literal hell to get there. The vocals are so gorgeous and the lyrics fit the game and the story PERFECTLY.
“Good Riddance” is the quintessential example of their different singing styles reflecting their characters.
I'm so glad that you finally decided to listen to a song from Supergiant. Something I would love is if you listened to their "Songs of Supergiant Games" album that they made for their 10th anniversary

Ah, made it to Asphodel, huh? I would say just focus on farming darkness and gemstones as you learn how enemies move and attack, and how your weapons function. My favorite weapon is the Twin Fists of Malphon, a pair of gauntlets that allow you to basically fight like Little Mac. Thanks for the great analysis, hopefully you eventually deal with the whole ost, and with other music masterpieces from the indie scene such as Celeste and Hollow Knight to name a few. And other games with Darren Korb music as well. Hades after all was just their last one. Ashley and Darren were on the previous ones too, which all happened to be good games as well. Needless to say the beautiful music sticks with you from all of these, and even the lyrics are memorable for the songs that have them.
Finish the game its amazing. Totally worth it. Game is a full package its amazing on all fronts. Very few games ever achieve this kind of overall quality.

Supergiant and Darren Korb always brings out the absolute best! If you love this, try listening to the Transistor soundtrack, the original soundtrack is filled with this bewitching cyberpunk instrumentals and Ashley’s voice just makes everything perfect. But the extended soundtrack adds Ashley’s humming to all of the instrumental tracks. And as a treat, Supergiant also made this orchestral album recorded at Abbey Road with musics from all 4 of their games, including Hades. For this one, they asked the help of Grammy nominated composer Austin Wintory to help them with the new orchestral compositions
Ayo I just hop on Hades once again in a long time and just finished the true ending recently as well. The entire album of song is a masterpiece that reflects the environment, mood and tone of suffering, fighting, and freedom of the underworld that I never experienced before. Cool choice bro

the meaning of the song is even greater once you play through the game, because the whole point of the game is that you're constantly trying to run away, and yet one of the the best moments in the game is when you die and get sent right back to the beginning, because it's only then that you can talk to the people who are there, who have ALWAYS been there, and who have to watch and wait for you to leave again and just LET you because they love you. MMM. This game is so good.
I only just now realized this after watching this, but I think we are conditioned to read the lyric "home is not where you live but who cares when you're gone" incorrectly due to our use of the phrase "who cares" to blow things off. If we reword it just a little bit... "home is not where you live, it is who cares when you're gone" ...now that means something completely different!
I'm so glad you covered this one. I actually wept at the culmination of the journey in the story and hearing this song play. It's one of my favorite songs ever, and I really appreciate how you can put into words the things I felt. 🤍

Supergiant games has been dropping hits for a while now. Music and art has been a center piece to their titles, but they also know how to write a compelling story inbetween crisp action sequences. I did not love all their titles, but i can not deny they are all well made and good. The Transistor soundtrack is still one of my faves.
I will recommand papier boat of Transistor and setting sail/coming home of Bastion. Darren Korb is such a brilliant compositor and singer.

All Supergiant games are, well, super giant. Started with Bastion and never stopped. Whenever they release something, I know FOR SURE that it will be great. I'd heavily recommend a Transistor OST reaction, specially since the game's music is so vital to the lore and to the main character's personality.
