AIRBORNE (1993) Filming Locations | Cincinnati, OH & More! THEN AND NOW 2021 | Mapping Nostalgia

- We recently visited beautiful Cincinnati which I spell correctly about half the time. Cincy has so much history and cool architecture which is really shown off in the movie, AIRBORNE. When I was a kid, I was completely transfixed by the Devil's Backbone race. Never did I believe I would end up getting to visit the locations. This was one we had to do!

Wow. Never thought someone would do the filming locations for this.
It called to me.
This film meant so much to me as a kid. I still say the scene where they all finally embrace Mitchell and lift him up and apologize towards the end is one of the most uplifting scenes in all of film.
Ya it meant alot to me to . Great movie
Thanks for the memories, I was one of the stuntguys on Airborne. Being from SoCal ,the local girls loved us there. I have fond memories of that place.
Thanks for checking out the video, Jimmy, and thanks for your work on this childhood favorite for so many. I can’t imagine how fun it must’ve been!
the stunts are great -- would love some stories from set, if you care to share! :)
The double date location on the Kentucky riverfront was called Covington Landing. It was a floating structure/barge on the Ohio River that housed several restaurants and bars. It had a railing/boardwalk on the outside where they stood. It is long gone but you were in the correct location. Great job with the video!
That explains a lot! I always wondering why I could quite get the skyline to line up with the bridge properly. Thank you, Toby!
This is awesome, takes me right back to 1993 and all the rewatches for years after that. Thanks so much for the very well researched and presented video!
My grandma story is the opposite; she got me a bootleg VHS copy because she thought I'd like it. My friends and I wore the tape out, and then went and jumped over people's recycle bins and stiff haha. Awesome video man. Tons of work went into that!
Thanks man! Yeah, she was always quick to point out the stunt doubles and everything 😂.
Fun fact you didn't ask for: Devil's Backbone is actually the name of a super curvy road on the west side of Cincinnati. But none of the footage in the movie is shot anywhere close to that location. Still love seeing my hometown rep'd in movies and the end race scene in Airborne is a lot of fun even though it's not remotely accurate to my internal GPS😁.
You know what, I meant to go to the visit the real one but completely forgot to. Next time I’m in Cincy I’m gonna have to get a picture with the street sign!
It's not that curvy. It was part of my Enquirer route and my old boss lived off it. The road it terminates into, Rapid Run, is much more currier. Especially heading to Addyston and the river.
One of my favorite movies growing up never thought someone would do the locations love the way you line all the shots up brings the movie back to life awesome job man 👍 🎥
Thank you for the kind words, Richard! I watched this movie so many times as a kid, so I had to do it!
INCREDIBLE VIDEO!!! This movie was my entire childhood! Me & my best friend STILL quote it to this day! The casting, the story, the music, the impact… One of the BEST FILMS of the 90s! Still watching it in 2024!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Same here! Such a good movie! Thank you for watching!
Airborne, RAD and The Last Dragon had the best soundtracks by far
Literally re-watched this movie last night. My girlfriend's first time after I watched brink with her for the first time lol! Good times! Nostalgia at it's best. 🤘
Haha! That’s awesome! What’d she think??
@@GoingtotheMovies she liked it. I grew up with it though so it'll always be that kinda movie for me
The two best skater movies of all time. Good work, brotha lol
What a cool dose of nostalgia! This was a pure joy to watch. I loved this movie back when it first came out and I love it still. Bravo on tracking down all those filming locations! Just wanted to say thanks for posting this video and to let you know I subscribed to your channel. Cheers!
Thank you, kornfreak78!! So far, this is the only entry into our “Mapping Nostalgia” series, but I have a couple more planned!
Amazing work putting this together. Thank you for your passion & dedication to do this along with your significant other.
I was also 🤣 @27:24 when you were explaining to your grandma how much you loved the movie. Too funny.
Haha, she was ruthless! Thank you, Zilla Mesh!
I am so stoked to have found this....thank you for the effort and for making this. I absolutely loved this movie. I, 41 now and still watch it. Fantastic content, well done!
Thank you!! It was a blast to make and the movie never gets old!
Thank you for this video, and all the effort that went into it. Super nostalgic piece, and this was definitely a movie that got me on skates when I was a kid. Still got em today!
Thanks for checking it out! It is definitely an inspiring, go-out-and-skate kind of movie
This got everyone on skates. Won me a state championship on ice
Top 5 movie for me. Got me into extreme inline skating. Movie of my youth. Thanks for doing such a great comprehensive film location for this diamond in the rough movie.
Thanks for watching! Gonna have to do a Part 2 since I’ve found a few more spots
Wow thanks for making this video. I’ve always said how underrated this movie was. I’m 34 now and I’ll still put this movie on when it’s a Friday night and I’m just relaxing.
That’s awesome! I agree. Way underrated. Thank you for watching the video!
Great video dude. Airborne still holds up as one of my favorite films.
Thanks, Zero Kool! I poked some fun at it in the video, but in all seriousness this is a certified GREAT MOVIE
I wish they would remake this movie today with all the camera technology and drones the final race scene would be much more exciting
Absolutely love this movie. Just watched this yesterday for nostalgia and just stumbled upon this video today. Thank you so much for this video and I think it's awesome how you match up real shots with the movie! I used to watch Airborne every day after school as a kid. Thought it was so cool to have a movie that took place where I'm from. Funny thing is, Devil's Backbone is 2 minutes from where I live. It's a decently curved/hilly road. Devils Backbone starts off of Rapid Run Rd and eventually turns into a dead end. It also leads to a street called Ebenezer which is pretty curved/hilly also. All of those roads have some crazy cool bends that would have done the job honestly. They could have actually used both of those streets to give a similar outcome honestly. It's only like 12-15 minutes from downtown Cincy. Either way, amazing movie and I'm glad the TH-cam algorithm brought me to this video. Absolutely amazing work!!!
I'm new to this channel and just so happen to find this video first. This was one of me and my brother's favorite childhood movies. It's the movie that got us into roller blades/skating. Man, so many memories, i wonder if they've done a reunion with the cast because so many cast members have done so well for themselves. thank you for covering this movie.
There’s talks of a reunion and locations tour happening this year! Checkout @airborne_movie_experience on Instagram!
I was three or four when this video was filmed about a block away from my house. There is a park on O'Fallon Street on the Bellevue side (when facing the river/north, the right side of the street is Dayton and the left side is Bellevue) and I couldn't play at the park in case of filming! For a 3-4 year old kid, not being able to go to the park was a bummer, haha. Still live in the same house, and still enjoy watching the movie every once in a while. I just went to The Butterfly Show at Krohn Conservatory a couple days ago and I always think of Airborne when I go there. :). Sometimes it's fun to remember what this area looked like when I was really little versus now. New stadiums, buildings, different house colors, but still the same overall. :)
This was super impressive!! I’ve done many attempts on google earth and street view to find these spots and found no where near as many as you have. Amazing! Thank you so much for making this.
Thanks, Leigh! If you haven’t already, you should join the Facebook group “Airborne Movie 1993”. A couple of guys have found a couple more spots in there! We could almost do a shot for shot remake at this point 😂
Outstanding, thank you for putting this together. This film was one of my favorites and helped push me when it came to rollerskating! Great job, from the heart!
Thank you, Agent Skylorn! Keep shredding!
Love this movie! As a kid and throughout my life, I've seen it 5+ times and your video makes me want to watch it again.
Not sure which is cooler. The fact that you did such an excellent job showing the filming locations of this movie (I forgot that it was based and shot in Cincinnati) or the fact that you are wearing a Radford shirt :)
Thank you for making this video! I grew up watching this epic film and still watch it to this day!
Oh thats a cool angle they took showing up at the house, the movie gave it almost a hallway look
so glad you did this! I sent your video to Shane (Mitchell Goosen). He loved it.
Amazing! Thank you for sending it his way. I always hoped he'd end up seeing it at some point!
I freaking love this movie!!!!!
It’s SO good!
Thank you so much for doing this for us. This movie still hits for me. What an amazing film! And for you to go on site for us is awesome my friend. Thank you.
I absolutely loved this video! Airborne is my favorite 90's blading movie! Thank you so much for sharing😁🤘
Great job finding these locations. I was an extra in the movie & this brought back so many memories. Seeing the ice rink knocked down was very sad. “Travis, you’re out.” Is still my favorite movie line… lol.
Great video. Seen this movie sooo many times. Thanks for the great tour!
I’ve seen a lot of filming location videos and this has got to be one of the best! 🏆🏆🏆
Wow, thank you, Kiki!
Absolutely fantastic work, really enjoyed it. Thanks for putting this together for some an awesome film

Thank you for making this. I loved this movie when I was a kid. I too had it on VHS and watched it all the time 😌
This is so well done. I appreciate you making this.
Thanks, Anton. It was a blast putting it together!
An old friend of mine is one of the tall long haired fellas on the left in the school hallway. He always told me he was an extra in this. Cool to see.
This took an incredible amount of work. You deserve an award for this!
You did a great job showing all those locations from the movie 🎥 one of my favorite movies, brings me lots of good memories ❤

Thanks for checking it out, Brent. Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the video. I love that people still talk about this movie. I grew up on Springdale rd and went to the school at the bottom of the hill. When they were filming we all got go check out the movie trailers in our parking lot.

PS I sent this the Shane McDermott and Chris Edwards

Awesome! I hope they get a chance to check it out. That would be insane!
This movie came on HBO all the time when I was a kid and I'd watch it every time.
Excellent. Such a fun flick
I agree! I have an unhealthy obsession with this movie, haha!

This is awesome thanks for making it!
Thanks for watching, Anthony! It was a lot of fun to make!
This type of thing is so awesome, I found most of these on google maps too.
Great video!
Love this movie, It inspired me to buy my first set of rollerblade Lightning’s which were Mitchell’s skates. Love your video!! I’ve seen a lot of filming location videos and this is by far the best I’ve seen! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to make this! Awesome
Thank you so much! I’ve found a couple new spots since making this so I may have to do a follow up. Airborne is the best!
That's so awesome. I just introduced my 12 year old daughter to the movie this last weekend and she loved it. Last month was The Last Dragon and RAD before that. By far all three are in my top 5
OMG I forgot all about this! I loved it so much as a kid.
Excellent coverage! Airborne and Can't Buy Me Love (1987) are my two favorite RomComs. I first saw Airborne in 1995 on HBO and really enjoyed it. I was trying to figure out where several of the fil.IMHO locations were and just found your TH-cam video page, which answers so ma h of my questions. I loved the chemistry between Shane McDermott and Brittney Powell. Thanks again Happy Holidays!
Did a similar hunt years ago but this is way more comprehensive. Thanks for this!
Thanks, Tim! There are still a couple of spots I wish I would’ve hit!
BTW, did you march Scouts at some point?
@@GoingtotheMovies 2002, snare! :) Did you march?
Not DCI. A couple of my college roommates marched Crown. Madison Scouts we’re always one of my favorites!
You did an amazing job here! Thanks!
Thank YOU, Dennis!
I can’t believe this video exists haha awesome work
This video should have gotten way more love then it has, Thank you for this. I love this movie and watch it to this day aswell. Im 36.
Wow, thank you for this! I was an extra in it, at the end of the race. Such fond memories of that day...
That is so awesome, Renata! That must have been an incredible day!
@@GoingtotheMovies It was! My one and only foray into a Hollywood set LOL
How long was the whole event for? What was ur favorite moment
Awesome job 👍🏼 I enjoyed this episode very much.
Thanks YT1300PILOT!
Great job. This was my favorite movies growing up. My friend and I rewatched it a couple years ago and died laughing at how corny and dated it seemed. Still one of my faves though.
Great work, brotha!
Epic job loved this movie
Great video. Airborne is one of my favorite movies of all time. It got me into rollerblading as a teen, and I still watch the movie to this day. Mitchell's stunt double was Chris Edwards, who was a pro skater for Team Rollerblade in the 90s. He's in a lot of skate videos like Hoax and The Bottom Line.
Great video. I was born, and raised in Cincinnati. I recognize most of the locations you highlighted. I was only 10 years old when Airborne released. Awesome job man.
Thank you, Antonio! Cincinnati is such an amazing city and the movie is a big part of my childhood, so I loved getting to see the spots in real life. Glad you liked the video!
@@GoingtotheMovies Awesome. If you ever come to Cincinnati to catch a Bengals game, there are a lot of people who tailgate at a place called Longworth Hall. It's actually the huge parking lot where they played street hockey in the movie. You highlighted that location in your video. The buildings in the background are very easily recognizable.
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed your video..thank you kindly for your time and dedication, excellent attention to detail. It was a sick movie indeed 🙂 EXETREME 🤣
Bringing Nostalgia back to life 👍🙏
Thanks, Summer Luvin! So glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome job. Great movie, one of my faves.
Thanks, Tim! I’m with you on that one!
I was an extra in this movie. Thank you for this!
One of my favorite movies of all time. And dude, did you go to Radford? I played basketball there from 2012-2016. You’re the man!!
Whoa! Yeah my wife and I both did. I remember you! I used to produce the games on the radio working with Rick Watson from 2014-2016. I can’t remember who we were playing but didn’t we have two back to back crazy buzzer beater wins or something like that?
I was in the pep band my freshman and sophomore years and we would always go crazy for Blake Smith. Good times 😂
It was hard for me to judge this movie at Face value because I was so dazzled by recognizing so many familiar places that I grew to love while living in Mt Auburn and then, later, in the west side of town. When I was dating my wife to be, we used to go to Covington Landing and Pompilios. After living in Cincinnati for a year, I briefly dated a girl who had a bossy controlling brother so, this movie chimed in with my life in Cincinnati in many ways. I used to live four blocks from Western Hills High and I used to go to Long Worth Hall to use the pre-press imaging service bureau upstairs. So, I love to watch Airborne about once a year for a lot of different reasons.
I poke some fun at it in this video, but this movie really does hold up. The comedy is legitimately funny, the score is like nothing I've heard in any other movie and sets such a cool tone for everything, and the actors seem like they are having a genuinely good time making it. It's got some flaws, but compared to most movies from my childhood - it holds up very well.
Nice!!! As a rollerblader in my youth… it was also my favourite movie! A cult classic!!!
_"As a matter of fact, man, we've got a game today against the preps"_
_"That's right, against the preps!"_
AWesome vid, dude!
Thanks, John!
Wow one of my favorite
I needed to see this today. Good finisher for the evening
Haha! Glad you found it, Matt!
Awesome video. I got in to Rollerblading because of this movie, and ended up touring the country in a bus skating. We watched this movie often!
That is awesome!! I bet that was an amazing time.
@@GoingtotheMovies I think about those years very fondly to this day. Still skate here and there, but I'm fat and old now! Thanks for the reply and I'll follow you on Tik Tok as well.
@@Docdroz haha! Without TH-cam back then, the only way to see skating/bmx/skateboarding was those demo tours, movies, and X Games. Oh, and the magazines! I was obsessed with all of them…
