    I had a 3rd gen Tiger 1200 and loved it, the most comfortable bike I've ever owned. I traded it in for a 1290 SDR when my better half got her full licence, mainly because it felt too big and clunky commuting into London. I can't wait to give this new 1200 a try, if the weight saving and new geometry make it handle as well as they say, definitely going back to one me thinks! Great review man, looking forward to you putting it through its paces back in the UK.

    Happier with my Himalayan than any of the big ADVs I’ve had. If they would ADV-ize the Scrambler XC (a bit of fairing and a nice windscreen-retro-styled, of course; low pipe; luggage rack; center stand; wide, sturdy crash bars to keep it from falling all the way over; and an optional lowering kit), I think they’d have a better solution that would be a true alternative. Based on my T120, I think their 1200 twin is fantastic at any speed.

    We did say (way back) the T-plane on the 1200 would be vibey like the 900, and that perhaps for a tourer this wasn't a great choice- Grip Puppies to the rescue? I don't think it's a GS killer, but defo a GS alternative.

Less tech and better parts for real world riding . 5 gallon tank and a back rack for bad weather gear .. Glad you got to get on a plane this time Rob ..All the best , Guy

    I sold my 2021 BMW GS 1250 Adventure and did a DEEP study on cost/benefits when comes to off road and durability, in resume, the 2022 Africa Twin fully load in the US came at $18K plus they paid me really good on my ktm super duke 1290 as trade in, it was a no brainer. BTW i owned a 2017 Tiger 1200 and I hated its suspension.
    Thank you for the review

    I look forward to your comparison with the GS. I tested a Tiger 900 last week, thinking that maybe something a bit lighter than my GS was interesting. In many ways I really liked it, but the vibration, lack of interface with a decent satnav (with maps) and the diving front forks, made me apologise to my GS on the way home for ever having messed around with another bike. It must be true love!

      How is riding the GS in the city. In heavy traffic?

    • @davidbrann3581
      @davidbrann3581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmitPal-hj1ze It’s not too bad actually. Despite being big and heavy, it’s very well balanced and carries it’s weight low down. I’m only 5ft 9 inches, with 30 inch legs, but my GS is the low version, so I can just get both feet on the ground. The engine is very smooth and using the rear brake, whilst balancing use of the throttle and clutch, it’s fairly easy to ride at walking pace. On the other hand, it’s width makes filtering more difficult than on a lighter, slimmer bike. I also have a Triumph Speed Twin, which I bought for local use, but the fuelling at low revs makes it harder to ride smoothly in busy, urban traffic. I tried the Street Triple, which I absolutely loved, except that the slightly racy body position gave me a stiff neck. I think that all bikes are a compromise, which is why one isn’t enough! Fortunately for my marriage this belief doesn’t extend to personal relationships!

    • @AmitPal-hj1ze
      @AmitPal-hj1ze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidbrann3581 haha. Yeah man. But I actually live in India and here in the cities traffic congestion is at another level. I do know a couple of guys who own GSs' and they do sometimes take it to office and back, but I am not so sure if it is for me. I do have ridden a GS on the highway and I was absolutely amazed by the smoothness and comfort. But then yeah in slower speeds or idle, it is a struggle, I won't deny. I took a test ride on the Africa twin in the city recently and I was actually quite surprised by how lively the motor was even at low speeds. I felt it was quite practical even inside the city. As for Triumphs, I am not really a fan.

    I have 16,000 miles on a 900 Rally Pro. I haven’t ridden the 1200 but I did sit on it a moment or two and can confirm it’s not shockingly bigger. There’s a deflector on the air exhausting from the radiator ports that should deflect the hot air better than the 900. That would be a nice chance in the hot summers here in South Carolina USA. I’d also like a display option closer to traditional dial gauges like the 1200 has on my 900. Great review man.

    Great review indeed. For last few weeks I've set my mind on upgrading to KTM 1290 SAS and now I have a second thoughts😅 Since Triumph took over 4 years in development of this machine they could use few more days to do some work on the colour choice and TFT layout. That's a bummer😕 Otherwise an awesome piece of engineering.

    Great review, I'm impressed with the looks of the 1200, its a huge improvement over its predecessor , the only negative that springs to mind is the limited range of colour options, the blue is nice enough but the combat green is just drab and unappealing, if Triumph can produce beautiful paint schemes on its classic bike range then why can't it offer equally beautiful paint schemes on its adventure range ?

    The things that no one seems to cover about these bikes is the service intervals and the cost of services. With BMW, you have a big service and a little service and even the little service is expensive and always within a 12 month period even if you haven't notched up the Kms, due to the need to change oil and filters. This makes owning one very expensive. So if the Tiger was cheaper in this department, it would be a positive.

      Agreed on the heavy weight ADV bikes being too expensive. The MSRP of both the Tiger 1200 and the 1250 GS is about USD $5,000 overpriced. That puts it (at $25,000) in the neighborhood of a base model mini-SUV. For me, that's hard to stomach. I'm tempted to cry for help from Yamaha by upgrading and lightening the Super Tenere, but they'd only raise the price over $20,000 themselves.

At the same time, I saw the equivalent SUV counterpart to the Tiger 1200 is really the Ford Bronco Raptor - turbo charged V6, 400 HP. That thing's over $70,000. I have been riding my rally explorer mostly off-road now for about 6 months. The bike is so close to being perfect really… HOWEVER outlet of things that makes it miss the mark.
    1. Air filter being under the tank and no ability to fit pre-filters is a concern for anyone who rides in dusty conditions.
    2. OEM crash bars are purely cosmetic and due to no aftermarket support you have no viable protection options. I have bent 2 sets with slow speed technical riding drops. The bars fail and bend into the bike causing more damage. Probably better off without them, bike would be lighter.
    3. Shaft drive is great however the gearing is way to tall… the triples like to rev meaning 6th gear is pretty much redundant. On the explorer that will likely be getting knobbies you will not have tyres rated for the speed it can do. Make the current 5th gear 6th, make the current 1st gear second and add a gear under it. 20kph idle in 1st is nuts…
    4. The windscreen jams once it gets dust in the mechanism. Being plastic it will break if you pull too hard. Mine stopped working correctly after 2 months.
    5. The rear brake has a high and low setting. It’s needlessly complex and mine has failed, often vibrating 1/2 way (no grip facing up to boot) while riding making braking with the rear hard/impossible as your foot slips off.
    So close but a massive miss.

    For a bike that 90% of owner will cruise on and never go off road, let’s take a sublime smooth triple and make it vibe at highway speeds. Same with the 900. Sold mine six months in. Interesting.... rally is the same wet weight as the r1250gs 249kg but the explorer version , according to Triumph spec sheet is 7kg lighter than R1250gsa both with 30l tanks 🤔 that’s a bit odd. Wonder if both are weighed with crash bars fitted? The Triumph really should be the class of the field as it’s the latest to the market. R1250gs was out in 2018 so all Triumph had to do was buy a couple of them benchmark them and make their bike which is released in 2022 that bit better in all areas. Triumph is manufactured in Thailand is it not, so if Triumph hold the same profit margins as European assembled bikes should they not be a fair bit cheaper than those European assembled bikes. I assume everybody buys sub assemblies in from countries with cheaper manufacturing cost these days so the parts bill of materials should be similar. Spec for spec not that much it in it price. So interesting, will definitely like to try a Triumph . Would like to see one in the flesh to check the looks out. Looks of course are very much individual preference. I don’t dislike it but not sure it looks that special to my eye, a little dull maybe .... mmm not sure, let’s have a look at it in the flesh.

      Rally Explorer does not come with same rack and protection as GSA, when you add it to RE weight is nearly identical to GSA.

    The main problem with these bikes is their excessive pricing. In my country the GT with a 20 litre tank cost $29,999.00 which is around 16,650 pounds sterling. As far as I am concerned that is bull shit.

    I think triumph have made some mistakes with their decision making on the development of this model. they defend it by saying well we did our research etc. prime examples being removal of electric windscreen, and then rear radar only being on the explorer model. gt pro will be the bike of choice for most predominantly road riders and yet no radar. mystifying.

      Both of those are features are ones only a very small percentage of people actually utilize and want in a motorcycle. Both of those features would add a huge cost to the bike and to your wallet

    Triumph screwed this bike up. The none electric windscreen looks very tiny. The removal of the single swing arm. The new engine. Absolutely nothing wrong with the old one. Made plenty of power. The only thing they got correct was the new cushy seat. No thanks triumph.

    Looks a nice bike, pitty we didn't get to hear it. Would I like to see some more reviews like this? Most certainly not!! This was more a review of your mic and camera set up than the bike itself. When I see a review I want to see someone sat on the bike, twisting the throttle applying the brakes, then I watch and listen to how it responds. Annoying vibrations...where's the footage? 👎

  • @ReferenceFidelityComponents
    @ReferenceFidelityComponents 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mpg please😜. l/km is meaningless without having to convert in your head. We live in the uk hence miles, pounds, gallons! Triumph have ditched their electric screen then? The previous one's screen was the best in the business and no need to take hands off the bars as you could adjust using switchgear.
    The triumph's dashes are my main techy gripe with these bikes. WAY TOO MUCH information and to someone new to tft screens not intuative to use. I much preferred the original Tiger 1200 spiit digital/analogue clocks that were easy to read and gave everything needed.
    I have yet to watch a new review where the reviewer came clean about the major weak point with the 1200...iffy and awkward slow speed handling due to being top heavy. I hated pushing the mk1 and mk2 tiger explorers about. They were hateful pigs to paddle around car parks or get on and off stands fully loaded. They made zero sense off road and were too tall and miles too heavy.
    Please can someone comment if they've addressed the top heaviness as this is what put most riders off the trumpets...that and too many electrical reliability issues longer term.
    I hope the fit and finish is more GS than Tiger now too. Whilst frames and paint were good on my earlier ones general finish was poor on engine casings and little things light fairing and spot mounting brackets were cheap and vary nasty.
    They're charging premium money for these so I'd hope that finally they have their act together and that it justifies the price, the top heaviness has been addressed and reliability issues dealt with.
    Not a fan of dynamic esa type suspension. Too expensive when it eventually fails and no better than well set up quality manual suspension which is way cheaper to service and lighter.
    Good overall descriptive comments but I felt the review lacked some if the riders pov feedback needed. Personally I liked the older 120 crank as it was buttery smooth and as no one in their right mind takes a 1200 tiger off road makes for an addictive and pleasant engine.

    I'm not a big fan of round and ugly brake fluid reservoir. You cannot unsee it once you see it. Same also as Ninja 1000. Ugly. Such a high-end beautiful big bikes, but with ugly reservoir like that.

    Why didn't you show us the gauge display booting up and changing sceens? You kept saying how slow it is but didn't show it (silly omission). Triumph should have ditched the shaft drive. Shaft drive is totally overrated. It's heavy, expensive, overly complicated, and not as maintenance free as advertised. Chains (O and X ring) last a long time, are relatively cheap and easy to replace, and actually require very little maintenance (light oiling occasionally is all that is needed).
