A few people asking for the weight specs - so here are Triumph's quoted wet weights (in running order, 90% fuel): GT - 240kg GT Pro - 245kg GT Explorer - 255kg Rally Pro - 249kg Rally Explorer - 261kg
Great review. It’s a big bike and it would be useful to know the comparison of weight against the equivalent GS. I don’t quite understand the advantages over the 900’s but I’ll go and have a look at the dealer in the Spring. Thanks again. Yours aye, Alan
I don’t get it. Why is there this obsession with weight? I bought my original Tiger 1200 because of the build quality and over engineering, but this has made unacceptable compriomises to save weight. You would really accept the loss of a single sided swing arm to save 1.5Kg?! Have we become whimps?
As a GS 1200 rider, I realy like this Triumph. . Love all bike's ... it is al about the riding . Be safe, live up. Great review and greatings from Belgium.
*Fingers crossed* I hope they decide to bring that dash to the 900 screen via an update. The tachometer on any of the dash layouts on my 900 is terrible.
I can only imagine what Triumph & its line of dealers would charge to upgrade the 900's screen. Bring your banks loan officer to the service department. Fix the Triumph App as well. What a waste of technology.
I like the tiny things, mistakes and whatnot, that get left in the video. It’s very low key and subtle, but it shows us the man behind the mike! There’s not a big deal made about it,no exaggerated flubs or blooper reels,no overt attempt to draw attention to the speaker;it’s just very well done. 👍
You always seem to get your videos out before the other TH-camrs that I watch. Well done. I love the look of the new Tiger 1200. When I replace my GS, this bike and the Tiger 900 will be strong contenders.
I think Triumph done a great job offering more bikes to give more options to rider's on which suits them best. Bringing a T Plane Crank to the Tiger 1200 is a huge plus, bringing better torque, better HP and better soundtrack. A weight loss is a bonus too, I'm sure it will give more ease to the rider, a new silencer is a brilliant move too. In terms of tech, I appreciate how much they put a lot of effort in more rider modes. I do hope they did right on the suspension to provide a better comfort. I like the price though. I'm looking forward on your full review!
The t-plane crank is a backward step on what should be a smooth triple throughout the range and the bikes front suspensions is poor compared with the GS. The vibes on the Triumph are noticeable as it its weight on the road. Maybe poor insulation as well because there can be a lot of heat coming from between seat and tank. If you have owned a GS or like the brand then the Triumph is no challanger.
Like the styling and weight reduction, don't like the seat height especially for the GT (road) versions. The 20L fuel tank is to small for this size of bike , to get the 30L fuel tank requires that you get the higher priced Explorer model. Loaded with lots of options, the blind spot monitoring is a great safety feature. Triumph has certainly targeted the BMW GS1250, I will wait until I read the full reviews of the Tiger 1200 bike to see how it compares with the BMW GS1250. It will be interesting to see if this bike is still top heavy and, how well the engine dissipates the heat. A good looking and well equipped bike however I expect a fully optioned Tiger 1200 will quickly get expensive.
The better comparison would be to wait until the M1300GS comes out next year. It's going to be lighter and more compact than the 1250 and will likely have blind spot radar, like the Rally Explorer. Head's up on the quick shifter on the new Triumph Explorers, some owners have been reporting issues with them. I've also heard about Triumph parts delays due to Covid. Check me on all that, though.

I have the 2012 explorer with a very low seat as I'm only 5'7 so I absolutely love this new version. As long as they do a lower seat I can change to like my bike now then I would definitely consider upgrading.
Great summary thanks. Good news that we can get the seat lower than 850. Would have liked to see 17” wheels for a full choice road tyres, but maybe the choice will be good enough with 18/19”. I’ll be buying in the spring and this is very high on the shortlist, hope the dealers get demonstrators in soon.
As an owner of the current Tiger 1200 very excited about the new model. Massively impressed on a recent test ride on the KTM SAS but will hold fire until I get to ride this. It’s going to be long winter.
It’s not the seat high what makes it comfortable for tall ones like you! It’s the distance between the seat and the footrest and where they horizontally are located. And not less important is the cushion of the seat and how much you sink into it.
@@marcelhunziker9017 good points. For sure agreed, Especially what you say about the knee angle/seat distance to footrest. Very important for comfort. But as a big dude it does feel nice to sit high on the bike, stretch your legs, feet on the tarmac.
Nice to see that Triumph did the same radiator split they did on the Tiger 900. That change in the 900 really changed the bike by getting rid of the very top heavy feeling that the 800 had. The previous Tiger 1200 was also the VERY top heavy, making low speed handling tricky, so IMO this is going to be the biggest change in the handling of the new model. Then again, I guess it’s going to feel quite top heavy again if you have the 30 L version with a full tank. 600 km fuel range though - wow!!
At least on paper the almost perfect bike. The only thing, that I'm missing on the top line-ups is a more future-proof connectivity system. For example, the Honda AT has carplay. Sounds minor, but more then often says the extra navi and ensures you having a usable connectivity for years to come. Sadly, Honda doesn't do shaft drives on the AT. At least not yet .... Especially sad as one can see how bad the app from Triumph seem to be doing, given it's bad reviews.
This bike's features definitely dive straight into the deep end of the adventure segment where the there's only two reigning Champs the GS and the SAS. Where I feel the Tiger is yet to catch up is with the suspension. There's nothing to match Telelever and Anti dive suspension on the competition, where all riding dynamics boil down to.
I've just bought one and it'll join my Quad Black R1250GSA in the barn. We'll be ADVENTURISING it for sure and I'll let you know if I prefer it to my GS.
Interested from the spec to have a go when I’m ready to replace the 1250gs I have now. Questions will be for me are, how does the engine feel by comparison on the road to the gs. The gs has huge stomp at low rpm which for the road riding at legal speeds is just how I like it and the other point is the front end, I love the front end lack of dive and planted feel the BMW gives, will the Triumph get close... not sure, outside of that and possibly C of G then it’s a strong contender on paper alright. Given it’s around 3 years newer than the GS there shouldn’t be any reason to not at least match the Beemer as Triumph have had plenty of benchmarking and development time.
I think it won't have the stomp down low but it'll be more characterful and exciting. Modern Triumphs steer really sweetly so I expect it to feel better (but it'll have some dive).
I did the marketing day for this bike. They looked great on paper and equally look great in the flesh. Price wise yes it’s cheaper than a gs but is it as good. I brought my top of the range gsa at a heavily discounted price with full luggage. Great looking bike and I look forward to maybe trying one.
Just bought my 2021 1250GSA in September but I would have given the Tiger Explorer a hard look with the specs you showed. Great video! Blind spot monitoring would be fantastic. I’m not a fan of the radar cruise control, I have it on my 2021 Toyota 4Runner.
The only thing I would be concerned with bikes that are this close in almost everything is resell value. I also wish triumph made a sport tourer that competes with the Super Duke GT
I really wanted to like this, and was pleased to see a more road focused GT version. Styling Still too adventure focused for me. Was hoping for something styled more like the Tiger 660 or a Tiger Sport, but with shaft drive. I’d be much happier with 17” wheels. Will stick with my Tiger Sport for now, might be tempted by the Moto Guzzi V100!
Funny I was kind of leaning that way too, but luckily I also have a Speed Triple, so exchanging my Tiger 1050 for one of these has me very intrigued since it will open up much more area around me to ride. Still love my Tiger and even with her pushing 15 years old, people still come up and ask me about it all the time (this Sunday, when she was parked with more current BMWs, people still came up and wanted to know more about the Tiger than the BMWs).
If the roads in the UK and US are anything like the roads here in Australia, particularly what you might call the 'B roads', then you'll be moving to an ADV before too long !
When people say a motorbike is too heavy.... What do u mean by too heavy? Too heavy to do what? Once the motorbike sets into motion u can't feel its weight in fact heavier motorbike handles better.
Wife would kill me if we traded. Passenger seat looks less accomodating to be honest. The Tiger 1200 Alpine I have is a fantastic two up bike. Yep a bit heavy on the top, but being 6'2 its not an issue for me luckily. The switch to manual windscreen is good imo, less fiddling with the menu selections
I've got a 2020 Triumph Tiger 1200 Desert Edition. I love the bike, it is superb. I'd be tempted to trade it in for new 1200 Rally pro - but for the colour schemes. The day Triumph see sense and come up with a black frame (or the day I feel I can justify buying a new bike and having the frame powder coated satin black), I'll be in like Flynn.
This is very intriguing from Triumph, I actually think it looks a nice bike and with all the stats looking favourably, more torque/better hp/weight loss/cornering headlight & daytime running light/easy function screen whilst riding/split radiator/better weight balance etc etc. Its got my interest for sure, I have the GS TE currently just ridden the GS Rallye around the Spanish mountain on & off road (dazmatronmotorcycletrips). This Triumph Tiger definitely now going into the ring with the top selling bench mark tourer & its British! So I'll be getting a test ride ASAP!! Thanks for the vid....
Hats down to Triumph. It is clearly newer, smarter, and better in every aspect compared to the old tigers. However, the looks will need to grow on people. The old tigers had a rugged look to them, these feel more...dull, maybe less serious, less commanding with tiny windscreen, an unsure beak, a non-serious-looking headlight, and a rather plain rear light...I'm not so sure. Looks as always are subjective, and first impressions can turn into something different over time.
Looks great with the same design language as the 900. Please tell me those Yamahas nostrils aren’t on the top of the tiger tank are they? Headlight looks descent without making the front look like a demonic bird. Please also tell me you can change the air filters without pulling off the tank. That’s a show stopper for me. Not that I’m interested in doing jumps etc, But would be interested to see how they handle on some trails- ie top heavy. I’m a triumph guy (tiger 1050) but if the price is close to BMW, I feel I must change allegiances. Cost is a factor.
It’s a really beautiful bike. I’m sure it compares favourably with the GS but the GS doesn’t dive under heavy breaking. I’m wondering if the triumph still does given that the forks haven’t really changed from the previous model?
My personal opinion is that diving under hard braking is not a problem at all. Practically every bike in the world has this movement and it doesn't make them any less stable and it definitely doesn't bother me. Also, I heard from a salesman at the BMW dealership that the next GS model will no longer have the same current system, it will use the universal system, at least on the front.
The torque specs online show 167.3 lb/ft in the engine overview and 176.3 lb/ft on the Specification tab. Seems high unless it should be Nm units. Impressed by the weight loss.
Lovely review again mate. On my 7th GS now a 21 adventure. I’m really interested in this bike, while my GSA sits perfectly next to my speed triple RS.. (a keeper) when it’s time for my GS to go. I’m probably going Ducati V2, or maybe an updated GS. looking forward to a test ride on this! Who know , it could sway me.😉
Great introduction review. As an owner of the current model I’m very interested in this bike and think the Rally Pro looks brilliant. I’d never take this bike off road though so wonder what difference the 21 inch front wheel makes on tour?
Can’t wait to see one at the motorcycle show tomorrow…I have been waiting for this to be announced before deciding to buy a Tiger 900 or this one….have to book some test rides me thinks….
it'll be interesting to see the first direct riding comparisons between the GS and the GT Pro. I'll be in the market in the spring as selling my Blade due to old age and a dodgy back 🙂. So for me more power is a factor as is less weight. This is why I've never considered the previous versions of the big Tiger as they've always weighed a ton. This new one seems to tick a lot of boxes though a wider 170 back tyre would have improved the looks. I'd like to buy British but ultimately it'll come down to how the two bikes compare. Tested a GS and it is lovely and plush and great fun on the twisties - but slow when used to Tap sports bikes. Looking forward to testing the Tiger. Fingers crossed.
Seems to offer largely what my 2016 Multistrada Enduro offered 5 years ago. Hopefully the additional weight savings and some of the niceties will bring something enticing …
I was going to buy a GS in 22. But i like the spec of the Tiger and take for a spin once it is available. What is the reliability track record of Tigers?
No doubt a great looking bike with great performance specs, however a couple of things will tip the scales towards the GS, one being the better torque at the lower rev spectrum, and the other the shear flick-ability of the GS due to its lower C of G. Not to mention that wiz wheel and TFT, plus the bmw unparalleled fit and finish. I am eagerly awaiting the new 1300 GS M tbh, which I think will blow our socks off! A great effort by Triumph nevertheless, I do believe it will be a winner......... But a GS killer? Naaah not really!!
As a ex-owner of GS1200 and current owner of S1000XR I have a strong feelings about "bmw unparalleled fit and finish". Especially XR is average at best. I did 50k on it and everything is squicking and vibrating, especially behind the dash. Plastics looks very "used". I also have Speed Triple R on which I did similar milage and it looks and feels brand new compared to XR. I will not buy another BMW. GS was OK, but XR is a total quality mistake. 4/10.
A few people asking for the weight specs - so here are Triumph's quoted wet weights (in running order, 90% fuel):

GT Pro - 245kg
GT Explorer - 255kg
Rally Pro - 249kg

Very good looking bikes! I’m looking forward to some healthy competition 🙂
18 inch rear wheel road biased ? No heated grips or centre stand on GT 14 grand Honda's nt1100 looking good value
Thanks for the information I was waited for that bike
Well done Triumph!
As an owner of the current Tiger 1200 very excited about the new model. Massively impressed on a recent test ride on the KTM SAS but will hold fire until I get to ride this. It’s going to be long winter.
I’m 198cm tall, the 895mm seat of the rally is reeeeeally appealing. While try one for sure in 2022.
@@marcelhunziker9017 "I really should explain this tall guy how tall guys are riding bikes"
Good job sherlock…
Thanks for the excellent summary Bob.
Sounds to be everything I'd hoped for. I'll definitely be going for a test ride.
Looks superb, can't wait till you all get to ride it and give your opinion.
Oh yes - certainly looking forward to this one
This bike's features definitely dive straight into the deep end of the adventure segment where the there's only two reigning Champs the GS and the SAS. Where I feel the Tiger is yet to catch up is with the suspension. There's nothing to match Telelever and Anti dive suspension on the competition, where all riding dynamics boil down to.
agreed, anti dive is a real boon on the SAS (and GS) - shame they didn't add ACC too
Suddenly the £13k Ducati Desert doesn’t seem so expensive 😳
I've just bought one and it'll join my Quad Black R1250GSA in the barn. We'll be ADVENTURISING it for sure and I'll let you know if I prefer it to my GS.
So impressed with Triumph! To me they’re knocking it out of the park.
A 660 adv. would be next awesome bike !
I wouldn’t be surprised if we got one of those next year…
Interested from the spec to have a go when I’m ready to replace the 1250gs I have now.
I've had Triumph for the past 22yrs or so.... ill definitely be having a look at the explorer 👍👍
Yh weird that an adventure bike has adventure styling…
If the roads in the UK and US are anything like the roads here in Australia, particularly what you might call the 'B roads', then you'll be moving to an ADV before too long !
100% agree Andy a 660 style replacement with 100+ horses and a low level pipe and my cheque book would open
I agree. The 18-inch rear tyre is way too limiting for road tyre options...
But wait!!! Is there going to be a replacement to the sport, to compete with the new Multistrada? Thats what I'm hoping for! 🙏
Great review, looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.
Hi Mr.Motobob what do you think about only 150 back tyre on such a strong motor?170 at least, looks better and grip better...hm
To get the 170 it would have to be more revvy and I think the mid-range focus is the right call for this bike
Good review , i think this segment is pretty much the bike world version of the “Chelsea Tractor”
Seems like a good one!
Edit: Any update on that mid sized Africa twin?
Excellent review of the new Tiger 1200, great looking bike , it might just be the bike to knock the GS off its lofty perch.
Interesting to see what the residuals will be compared to the GS!
Hurrah! Regular, clock looking tachometer on the dashboard!!! Hope they will adjust also 900 series dashboard with the same!
I like the rally trim with the 30liter fuel tank.
Pan america you had your day. Now triumph is here.
Excellent intro to the new beast Bob.
Can't wait for a ride review now, although I think i will be sticking with my 900GT Pro.
Excellent presentation.
I can't wait to see the GT Pro in the flesh and test ride it to see what the new engine is like
No doubt a great looking bike with great performance specs, however a couple of things will tip the scales towards the GS, one being the better torque at the lower rev spectrum, and the other the shear flick-ability of the GS due to its lower C of G.
Triumph has low-key made the best bikes over the last 2 years. Sans-Panigale. I'd take the 900 over this, but it looks amazing.
Very nice. And what a weight saving! Buy why (again) no nice bar for a satnav? Everybody needs one. Ik truly miss it on my rally pro 900.
Don't like the Boxer engine so for me this is a winner. Good to see Triumph made it so much lighter.
