Back in 1949 my father bought a 1949 Philco B&W TV set. Color TV was still very experimental and was not yet being sold to the public. It was a 17 inch round screen. We had that TV for some years. The cost of this TV back in 1949 was about $270 USD. In today's dollars the cost equivalent would be in the range of $5000 USD. Back in 1949 my father was earning at his job in the range of $2800 USD per year. This was excellent pay during those years. My parents were living in the US at that time.
Awesome technology! I hope humanity will be able to archive this knowledge and preserve it. This beautiful T.V. set and the cartoon that is playing makes me nostalgic for an era that I was not even born in.
fascinating that families used to all set round watching televisions like this one. i always thought the picture back then would be poor but watching this set i am amazed at the quality.
@@visaman -- The FCC freeze was enacted in 1948. Between then and the lifting of it in 1952, there were 108 stations that went on the air. By the end of 1949, several smaller markets had TV, including Phoenix, New Orleans, Atlanta (like Phoenix, a small market in that era, unlike today), Grand Rapids, and Albuquerque.
@@keithelster8858 thanks. I wrote my comment over 4 years ago, since then I learned that Seattle had a TV station in late 1948, the only station north of San Francisco. Contrast that with Vancouver BC, Canada which didn't get TV until late 1953. My parents in Saskatoon didn't get TV until 1954/55.
I had one of these, but couldn't get it going...even farmed it out to a tv tech(who was lazy, and didn;t really do anything to it) so it;s great to see one working! : )
Imagine being a kid back then and you have the only "Television" in the whole neighborhood! You have your friends over see this new invention! A radio with pictures? Wow.
I'm 76 & I was one of those kids, when we got our first t.v. in 1950, at age 4! It was mesmerizing because I hadn't gone to school yet or anywhere & now was able to see the World, through this amazing box!
Don't sit so close to the TV, you kids. It's bad for your eyes. And turn on some lights in here or you'll get a headache from eyestrain. And what you doing sitting inside in front of the TV on a nice day like this? Get outside and play!
had one I could never get it working...its a long story a tv repaiman had it and was going to repair it, but it was not a priority so it sat there for a long time,I finally took it back.
Vintagetvs, Do you happen to have any technical information regarding the Tele-tone TV-209? Finding useful info on the interwebs has proven difficult. A long shot but figured I would try. Thanks.
Sams Photofact 57-21 is supposed to be the service info for this model. There's one on eBay right now for $8. Search for 1949 Tele-Tone and not the Sams number.
Albert Giesbrecht yep a lot of body's were never recovered from Korea. They would pretend they were going to hand over bodies but they were only trying to get money out of us.
I suspect these early round b/w picture tubes may have been connected with the development of TV out of radar. It wasn't long before b/w tubes changed to the more movie-like rectangular shape, but it took until the mid-1960's for rectangular color picture tubes to "hit the market."
It is simply easier and cheaper to make TV or any other CRTs round and circular. The Germans were creating square flat-screen CRT television sets as far back as 1938
The television, as an output device, can handle any 525 analog NTSC signal that goes to it. Even with a console as new as a PS4 or XBox One, you could convert the HDMI signal into composite, then into RF out into any NTSC television (made in the us after 1941)
+Mephitus Incognito This particular tube has a thin spot in the phosphor for whatever reason, manufacturing defect, Ion burn or poor rebuild at some point.
Probably a bit of noise from the vertical circuit, or it may need the sound detector touched up a little. The microphone on the camera exaggerates it quite a bit, not as noticeable in person.
Most TV makers DID. Those sets showed the WHOLE frame of video displayed, but over a smaller surface area. But those that didn't could boast a bigger picture (on the SAME SIZE tube..) But, you loose a good bit of the actual video frame. Ahhh, Marketing!
Radiation was a problem on a few COLOR sets made before the 1970's. Color TVs use a higher voltage that have a SLIGHT leakage of X Ray radiation at close range. Later sets have better lead shielding. This is a black and white set. A 1949 black and white set is a "dangerous" as a 1989 black and white set.
That guy that said this set does not have electronics (confused with transistors) must be a Republican. Scary how people so simple can sound knowingly authoritative. Creepy.
Did you know that one of the INVENTORS of the transistor was a pretty hard core racist? No? Probably not. But I bet $20 you think Republicans are racist. LOL.
I love this. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

mark caine In 1949 not too many people had television outside of New York, and Chicago, and LA.

I think that the cabinet looks fine. It should retain a little history! Thanks for sharing.
Truly awesome!
Superb.

What is that faint buzzing sound in the background?
Question answered in the description.
When this was made people were still grieving over their loved ones lost in world War two.
David Brown And getting ready for Korea.
Albert Giesbrecht yep a lot of body's were never recovered from Korea. They would pretend they were going to hand over bodies but they were only trying to get money out of us.

Jeff Missinne mjm
Motorola brought out the first rectangular picture tube in 1964.
it was available in 25" diagonal size.
Converted using VSO Software "Convert to X" and burned to a DVD, it works very well because there is no Macrovision to cause problems.
...THERE'S A STEP BACK IN TIME-(!)
I want this item!
TV antiga e desnho antigo. Combinaram! Rio de Janeiro. Brasil
i got tons of 70 cartoons on dvd in walmart fort wayne indiana so i watch cartoon network latin america watching a betty boop music i was a child
I have a couple a videos up, of a 1954 RCA Ct-100 first color TV. Will be up for sale 5/1/14.
Vacuum Tube Technology is still Electronics, perhaps you are referring to Solid State Electronics?
Another good one to watch on this set would be Looney Tunes
The horizontal is a bit too far to the right.
The French probably would had called this a "hublot"- it's the French word for porthole.
Beautiful it's very old. Kkk
can i play nintendo on it?
I'm sure you can...providing you have an RF adapter to plug it in.
Super Luminous Anomaly fuck Xbox it sucks like you

why is the center of the crt duller than the rest?
+Mephitus Incognito This particular tube has a thin spot in the phosphor for whatever reason, manufacturing defect, Ion burn or poor rebuild at some point.
@corrina253 BECAUSE CAMERAS HAD ROUND HOLES TOO..DUH!!!
Extremely stupid question. Not familiar with old TV. What's that constant buzzing noise?
Probably a bit of noise from the vertical circuit, or it may need the sound detector touched up a little. The microphone on the camera exaggerates it quite a bit, not as noticeable in person.
Vintagetvs Thank you. If tv was still like this, I would be driven insane!
but worth its quality
This is awesome! Any chance I could use this clip on my channel to post some music? I would just replace the video footage with something else.
How are Watching stuff?
DVD Player and an RF Modulator.
I want to watch star trek tos on this tv :-)
It’s funny how they don’t even try to hide the round tube with a fascia
Most TV makers DID. Those sets showed the WHOLE frame of video displayed, but over a smaller surface area. But those that didn't could boast a bigger picture (on the SAME SIZE tube..) But, you loose a good bit of the actual video frame. Ahhh, Marketing!
i love u videos
the TV is 67 years old as of 2016
inkey2 I don't have one yet. I have so many of them I can't afford getting another one
how is the tv shows downloaded video/?
1, Download a video from the internet. 2, Burn video to a DVD. 3, Hook up DVD player to an old TV. 4, Play DVD on old TV.
How rare are these?
This new-fangled television thing will never take off.
SilverWingedOne lol
What’s the buzzing noise??
Electromagnetic interference.
these are your TVs, how to contact you?
THIS IS VINTAGE
how many inches is the screen?
10" tube but probably about 9 inches of actual screen.
Now how is the tv playing something you downloaded?
Anyone know original pricetag?
$270 (about $5000 nowadays).
Is it stereo?
They must have been smoking the good stuff.
lol .
this is old!!!! and I mean old!
All televisions use electronics.
Can you hook up Super Mario 64?
Yes you can, the basic broadcast standard didn't change until the 2009 Digital changeover.
Let me rephrase: Will YOU please do a video with Mario 64 on it? Or any video game?
@aberdurant videokarma org
antiqueradios com
or just Google those Sites and you'll find them
Can I play Battlefield 1 on it?
Ты меня облучаешь?
but can it run crisis?
I could almost feel the radiation hitting my face from watching this
