  • This is a 1930s Philco tube radio. This was the entertainment center for the 1930s. People used to listen to radio shows like people watch TV shows today. This video is in HD. Thank you for watching.

Nice memory for me. I had a 1936 Philco console. The chassis part was very similar to yours there. Mine could receive AM radio stations and also some short wave stations. I gave it to a friend in 1980. He refinished the cabinet and then gave it to his mother for display in her home. I underhand she treasured it for many years. Thanks for showing us yours.

I am happy to see that other people have the same appreciation for these old radios as I do. I am glad you enjoyed the video. ☺

You were REALLY brave plugging that in as it was 😬

Yeah, those old cloth wrapped electrical cords are not that safe. On the end of the plug the wires are essentially exposed. This was before modern electrical safety, nowadays the end of the plug is entirely incased in an insulator, as is the wires. People do not realize just how safe our modern electrical equipment really is.

Nice. However the wires were originally covered wit a cardboard disk. Somewhere along the line the cardboard disk that was on you plug got lost.

no problem, best way to do this is either go around on on youtube to do this sort of thing or hear what i know [ doing both is recommended ] since the radio seems to work ok don,t let it get you. when going for the filter caps check everything else with the use of a multi meter analog or digital. make sure they are in or close enough to tolerance sometimes you can tell one is certainly leaking when it's insides is pushing out or the wax is melted and pooled up id replace those with the closest matching olms and voltage NEVER GO TOO LITTLE unless you want an early 4th of July. too much ain't that good either. when replacing the power cord[ due to many original power cords insulation drying up and crumbing causing short circuits ] mind you to put a fuse in it due to your radio being ran by a transformer. if you find white sheets under or over certain parts it,s strongly needed to replace that.. it's asbestos. your radio does not sound like it has silver mica disease so dass ist gute!. upon replacing the filter cap if yours is a three prong take two off the shelf filter caps tie the two negatives together and tie the two others to the other two wires one wire per other wire, make sure to sauter it and shrink tube it before testing.. again unless you want a early 4th of July, it is a must that you check any grounding caps for your own safety! at the end your radio should work better than it is but if you have lack of stations that could mean it's out of alignment . is get a signal gen set for that. you should be good to go and not risk anything in the near future. just make sure to pull the chassis every four months to make sure the good or semi good caps are not failing. :) hope you find this useful

Your caps need to be replaced and the tubes and resistors checked. Then it should give you at least a local station instead of a loud hum with no static

Thank you for letting me know, I will look into it. I have been having problems for a while. Hopefully replacing the caps will work. I will also need to find a tube tester. I seem to recall somebody else talking about caps needing to be replaced.
