I feel really compelled to share my thoughts on roommate feeling excluded. I am someone with an anxious attachment style and I have a lot of childhood trauma that can lead to me feeling like I'm being excluded when my friends do something together as a date that I had previously perceived as something we planned to all do together. It's a very difficult and overwhelming feeling and if I wasn't in therapy I would absolutely cause these kind of issues and to be honest, I have. I'm working on it and I'm working on realizing that I'm not being abandoned when I feel this way. What I'm trying to say is, this person needs to take responsibility for their emotions and seek help but that I understand how difficult it can be and how ashamed one can feel after acting out in these kind of situations. This is a very vulnerable comment for me to write because of that shame but I don't want someone who relates to Alex to see this and think they are a bad person. Also, Alex's roommates are absolutely not assholes and I appreciate that they are trying to be empathetic but it us up to Alex to deal with his emotions.

If my ex had my name on him I would be terrified and angry at the same time, and we didn't even have a super messy breakup. Granted, I go under a different name by now so there's the added layer of my old name being my deadname with all the negative feelings associated with that, but the main thing for me would be the aspect of obsession that comes with this.
Bro, I've definitely told people to avoid a tattoo artist. My bff suggested him to me because he does her tattoos. I didn't do my research so that part is on me. But the agreement was that after I got permission from a specific artist to use their piece for a tattoo that the tattooer would credit her (the artist). He did not credit her or even post the tattoo. He posted my bff's tattoo, definitely because hers was color and just taken off line with no regard or requests for crediting the artist. I felt like it was VERY shady. My tattoo also now as it's healed and 2 years old has a lot of gaps in the black. My bff keeps telling POC at work to use her tattoer because he is a POC and could tattoo their skin especially if they want heavy black ink work. I have been going behind her back and telling these people not to go to this tattooer. I feel bad sometimes but his business is not at all effected. But it doesn't feel right to tell people to go to him if he doesn't credit artists and obviously can't do heavy black ink work. Also just referring people to him purely based on skin color is odd to me. Researching your tattooer is very important and should always be done. I've told my coworkers that too. Hopefully they listen lol.

To be fair, epitome looks a bit like it comes from French or Latin, the way it's spelt, so a lot of people find it hard to pronounce! Because it's from Greek, all the syllables are pronounced, which isn't very common in English, if it wasn't a loan word it would probably be pronounced "Eh-pih-tohm" instead of "Eh-pih-toh-me"
I'm from Birmingham England and a lot of people here use the "mom" spelling not "mum" so maybe other areas do too but "mum" is definitely more common in England as a whole. Sometimes he would bug us that I didn’t invite my female friends over to go on double dates. My best friend would hang out with us but she HATED him it was so funny but so awkward sometimes! The 18 year old being so casual about a potentially (likely) bad tattoo and saying he can just get it covered honestly stresses me out lol. What a weird attitude to go in with. I always tell people not to go to a tattoo shop/artist just because it’s convenient (ie super close to you, you know the artist and they’ll give you a discount), it’s better to do your research and find the right artist for the tattoo you want. And if you’ve seen them produce even one bad tattoo, go somewhere else. The girlfriend is totally right to be concerned. Also coverups are generally more expensive, bigger and limited in what you can actually do with them. Obviously I’m not against coverups but you shouldn’t plan to get one before you get the tattoo that would be covered up.

The age restriction in Australia is 16 with parental permission or 18 without. They changed if to 18 flat for about 3 years but changed it back a couple of years ago. ( Not to sure how long the law was changed since it didn't effect me but my uncle had to say no to his youngest getting a tattoo at 17 cause his older sisters had had to wait till 18 cause of the law being in place as they came of age)
I had an awful experience with a girl I knew that did tattoos. She lived in her van and was a travel tattoo artist. She tattooed me in her van, I got my first tattoo on my chest and wanted it pretty big but she printed the design 3 times smaller than it was meant to be. I told her I wanted it in pink and white to make it appear as scarification. She insisted on black, I said no I wanted red. (I’ve never gotten a tattoo or see a tattoo gun and assumed she was still doing red) she started tattooing in black and I wasn’t looking down when she was, when I did I was surprised. I payed 120 plus food, she didn’t finish that day after 3 hours, so I told her let’s start again another time just cause I really wanted it finished and never followed up. I went back to her to get my knee and wrist tattoos and thought, okay this is simple, I don’t think she can fuck this up, well she did. She gave me ink poisoning, tattooed so shakily that the lines are completely fucked up. She made fun of me moaning in pain (I was practically muttering under my breath) she screamed at her boyfriend the entire time, throughout this entire time she was stealing money from me. 😔 I’m most disappointed in myself!

People always act like getting a cover up is a simple and easy thing but it isn’t. Often, you can see the original through it and it looks even worse. Currently going through laser treatments to lighten a tattoo enough to cover up. It’s an expensive and lengthy process. Think your tattoos through friends ! Paying more upfront is always worth it for a lifetime piece of your body

As someone with lots of tattoos and working on a body suit…. The legal age to get tattoos should be bumped up to 21. The vast majority of 18 y/o’s don’t care the quality. Don’t care the cleanliness or legality. They get shitty cheap tattoos and then regret it massively later and give tattooed folks a bad name. I’m guilty of this. I have spent well over $1000 on cover up tattoos and still have 2 more to do. All of which I got at 18 freshly turning 18

@@skrittle555 no, im referring to fresh vs healed stick and pokes! the ink usually settles at least a bit darker as it ages. you can find examples on IG or maybe reddit. the ink settles? a bit differently than with a machine imo. it looks more blown out (not the right term but idk how else to describe it).

Why is it a problem to ask your partner about a tattoo? I think it's a normal thing. I did it once and the answer was that in a few years it will look bad. And he was right. I keep telling my husband he's not allowed to get another tattoo until he fixes the one on his shoulder. Obviously I'm joking but I really would prefer he gets it done before adding another. It wasn't anyone fault and it's not terrible, it's just that the filled in area is splotchy because it's red and he bled a ton so the artist had a hard time seeing what was colored and what was blood.

I am sadly a person that is prone to feeling left out a lot. But even I understand that couples need their own time and that isn’t a way to exclude me. I may feel a bit sad because I would have enjoyed doing something with my friends but that isn’t them doing something bad. It’s my own feeling that I have to deal with and realize it isn’t about me. I would have just said, “wow that sounds really fun! Please let me know next time they have a flash sale!” Like just because you feel excluded doesn’t mean they excluded you. I can feel sad about someone talking about their dog named Zach because I lost a dog named Zach but that doesn’t mean they intended to make me feel sad. Just because you feel something it doesn’t always make it the other persons fault.

My ex tattooed my birthdate on his chest in roman numerals after we broke up. I was in high school (he was two years older). I found out though a mutual friend that showed me his snapchat story where he posted a picture of it. I confronted him about it because we didn't break up amicably, I broke up with him even though he wanted to stay together. It was just fucking weird and I said he should remove it. My friend offered me a free tattoo because he was opening a new shop, hadn’t worked in a few years because of covid…. And needed to practice on some people before opening up the shop again so that when people come to pay, he’s not “rusty” the tattoo ended up taking forever and the design phase was a pain and the stencil had to be done like 20 times because it was my sternum and my anatomy isn’t symmetrical so the stencil just kept looking off…. I offered to pay a little because it took so long, and we agreed upon 100$… it was at least a 200$ tattoo…. So I still got 50% off and he got some practice warm up in without charging someone full price! Win win. 🤣 to be clear he reached out to me and OFFERED, I did not ask for a free tattoo. 😅

I don't think the first one (one about trading ticket 4 tattoo ) was a full asshole, however I don't think they should have told others to not go to the artist in the way it was done. I think it would have been less ass holey to just tell them they didn't have a good experience with professionalism and quality of said tattoo and let others decide for themselves.

Why were you wondering what was happening at the second story? It's clearly a lesbian (as in f/f, we don't know the actual sexuality of the women) couple. That reaction felt so odd to me because you don't react that way if it is male/female (read My [21M] girlfriend [20f]). It came across a bit weird to me. Might be because I'm on the spectrum so I'm just curious why you were wondering that. And I kinda think there were no a-holes there because you don't know what kind of trauma Alex has. Maybe he's on the spectrum and undiagnosed and just felt excluded because people didn't inform or ask him about things they expected he knew (or not). I can speak from experience there. But I reacted differently to it. I just asked why people hadn't invited me if they did stuff in a group that I considered myself a part of and they never even asked me. I felt like I missed the opportunities to choose. Granted, I had said no a lot before (in hindsight I was just constantly impulse overloaded) but that doesn't make it hurt less when people exclude from possible group activities because they assume you'll say no. Or Alex could've been in situations like that a lot in the past where people promised he could come and then they'd choose a date and time without them. I also have an experience like that where a person promised to invite me to their birthday, and who was the only girl in class not invited? Me (I was 12 and really bothered by the broken promise that hurt even more because I was basically the only one excluded, just because the actual popular kids probably wanted her to do that, I see no other reason). I think people who don't read reddit much find it confusing because it doesn't read well, so its pretty normal to misunderstand it. Also I think regardless of someone's trauma or mental illness its kinda their problem to work through things that may make other people feel bad or guilty when they others have done nothing wrong. Its not like they'd mentioned it in front of him, or forgot to fill him in on plans, or hinted in anyway that they're excluding him...even if he did feel left out he didn't have to be accusatory or guilt trippy, he could've jus asked them once, calmly if they could ask him if they were going out...but he could've got the picture if its a couple going out together date-style.
Erin Kinsella I agree with that. It's just there can be many reasons that explain why people act in a certain way. It's not an excuse, but it can help with understanding people. I have experience with a situation like that, but the behaviour was abusive. And it was my dad. The only thing knowing the cause did was give an explanation. I still haven't forgiven him. And of course, the roommate doesn't have to do anything about Alex's trauma, if it's there, and there isn't much to do about it except referring him to a professional. He kinda sounds lost without directions in a way. It's still his own responsibility to solve it, though.

I'd like to talk to the guy who says he'll "just cover it up later" if it's bad. I've been trying to get a tattoo covered for literal years now and no one wants to do it. It's hard to find an artist that does good cover ups, and any who is willing to touch another artist's work.

I feel really compelled to share my thoughts on roommate feeling excluded.
I am someone with an anxious attachment style and I have a lot of childhood trauma that can lead to me feeling like I'm being excluded when my friends do something together as a date that I had previously perceived as something we planned to all do together. It's a very difficult and overwhelming feeling and if I wasn't in therapy I would absolutely cause these kind of issues and to be honest, I have. I'm working on it and I'm working on realizing that I'm not being abandoned when I feel this way. What I'm trying to say is, this person needs to take responsibility for their emotions and seek help but that I understand how difficult it can be and how ashamed one can feel after acting out in these kind of situations. This is a very vulnerable comment for me to write because of that shame but I don't want someone who relates to Alex to see this and think they are a bad person.
Also, Alex's roommates are absolutely not assholes and I appreciate that they are trying to be empathetic but it us up to Alex to deal with his emotions.

If my ex had my name on him I would be terrified and angry at the same time, and we didn't even have a super messy breakup. Bro, I've definitely told people to avoid a tattoo artist. My bff suggested him to me because he does her tattoos. I didn't do my research so that part is on me. But the agreement was that after I got permission from a specific artist to use their piece for a tattoo that the tattooer would credit her (the artist). He did not credit her or even post the tattoo. He posted my bff's tattoo, definitely because hers was color and just taken off line with no regard or requests for crediting the artist. I felt like it was VERY shady. My tattoo also now as it's healed and 2 years old has a lot of gaps in the black. My bff keeps telling POC at work to use her tattoer because he is a POC and could tattoo their skin especially if they want heavy black ink work. I have been going behind her back and telling these people not to go to this tattooer. I feel bad sometimes but his business is not at all effected. But it doesn't feel right to tell people to go to him if he doesn't credit artists and obviously can't do heavy black ink work. Also just referring people to him purely based on skin color is odd to me. Researching your tattooer is very important and should always be done. I've told my coworkers that too. Hopefully they listen lol.

1. NTA. Op is simply telling their experience when asked, and the tattoo artist was kinda a dick about it. Nothing wrong with trading a tattoo for concert tickets, but the artist absolutely should've told there'd still be a charge for the booth or materials or whatever.

To be fair, epitome looks a bit like it comes from French or Latin, the way it's spelt, so a lot of people find it hard to pronounce! Because it's from Greek, all the syllables are pronounced, which isn't very common in English, if it wasn't a loan word it would probably be pronounced "Eh-pih-tohm" instead of "Eh-pih-toh-me"

I'm from Birmingham England and a lot of people here use the "mom" spelling not "mum" so maybe other areas do too but "mum" is definitely more common in England as a whole. Also, I was completely gobsmacked by the roommate one. I really couldn't imagine being as calm and reasonable about that situation as the Reddit Poster was. I completely understand that people may have their own battles and it can cause them to react in different ways, but the couple are being put in such a toxic situation when they can't even make plans for an impromptu date without hours of issues from what should only be their friend

The roommate one was a lot! Something similar used to happen with my old roommate my partner and I all the time! The 18 year old being so casual about a potentially (likely) bad tattoo and saying he can just get it covered honestly stresses me out lol. What a weird attitude to go in with. I always tell people not to go to a tattoo shop/artist just because it’s convenient (ie super close to you, you know the artist and they’ll give you a discount), it’s better to do your research and find the right artist for the tattoo you want. And if you’ve seen them produce even one bad tattoo, go somewhere else. The girlfriend is totally right to be concerned.
Also coverups are generally more expensive, bigger and limited in what you can actually do with them. Obviously I’m not against coverups but you shouldn’t plan to get one before you get the tattoo that would be covered up.

The age restriction in Australia is 16 with parental permission or 18 without. They changed if to 18 flat for about 3 years but changed it back a couple of years ago. ( Not to sure how long the law was changed since it didn't effect me but my uncle had to say no to his youngest getting a tattoo at 17 cause his older sisters had had to wait till 18 cause of the law being in place as they came of age)
I think it depends on the state. In Victoria it's flat must be over 18, but I think other states it's 16 and over with parental permission.

I had an awful experience with a girl I knew that did tattoos. She lived in her van and was a travel tattoo artist. She tattooed me in her van, I got my first tattoo on my chest and wanted it pretty big but she printed the design 3 times smaller than it was meant to be. I told her I wanted it in pink and white to make it appear as scarification. She insisted on black, I said no I wanted red. (I’ve never gotten a tattoo or see a tattoo gun and assumed she was still doing red) she started tattooing in black and I wasn’t looking down when she was, when I did I was surprised. I payed 120 plus food, she didn’t finish that day after 3 hours, so I told her let’s start again another time just cause I really wanted it finished and never followed up. I went back to her to get my knee and wrist tattoos and thought, okay this is simple, I don’t think she can fuck this up, well she did. She gave me ink poisoning, tattooed so shakily that the lines are completely fucked up. She made fun of me moaning in pain (I was practically muttering under my breath) she screamed at her boyfriend the entire time, throughout this entire time she was stealing money from me. 😔 I’m most disappointed in myself!

People always act like getting a cover up is a simple and easy thing but it isn’t. Often, you can see the original through it and it looks even worse. Currently going through laser treatments to lighten a tattoo enough to cover up. It’s an expensive and lengthy process. Think your tattoos through friends ! Paying more upfront is always worth it for a lifetime piece of your body

As someone with lots of tattoos and working on a body suit…. The legal age to get tattoos should be bumped up to 21. The vast majority of 18 y/o’s don’t care the quality. Don’t care the cleanliness or legality. They get shitty cheap tattoos and then regret it massively later and give tattooed folks a bad name. I’m guilty of this. @@skrittle555 no, im referring to fresh vs healed stick and pokes! the ink usually settles at least a bit darker as it ages. you can find examples on IG or maybe reddit. the ink settles? a bit differently than with a machine imo. it looks more blown out (not the right term but idk how else to describe it).

I keep telling my husband he's not allowed to get another tattoo until he fixes the one on his shoulder. Obviously I'm joking but I really would prefer he gets it done before adding another. It wasn't anyone fault and it's not terrible, it's just that the filled in area is splotchy because it's red and he bled a ton so the artist had a hard time seeing what was colored and what was blood.

I am sadly a person that is prone to feeling left out a lot. But even I understand that couples need their own time and that isn’t a way to exclude me. I may feel a bit sad because I would have enjoyed doing something with my friends but that isn’t them doing something bad. It’s my own feeling that I have to deal with and realize it isn’t about me. I would have just said, “wow that sounds really fun! Please let me know next time they have a flash sale!” Like just because you feel excluded doesn’t mean they excluded you. I can feel sad about someone talking about their dog named Zach because I lost a dog named Zach but that doesn’t mean they intended to make me feel sad. Just because you feel something it doesn’t always make it the other persons fault.

My ex tattooed my birthdate on his chest in roman numerals after we broke up. I was in high school (he was two years older). I found out though a mutual friend that showed me his snapchat story where he posted a picture of it. My friend offered me a free tattoo because he was opening a new shop, hadn’t worked in a few years because of covid…. And needed to practice on some people before opening up the shop again so that when people come to pay, he’s not “rusty” the tattoo ended up taking forever and the design phase was a pain and the stencil had to be done like 20 times because it was my sternum and my anatomy isn’t symmetrical so the stencil just kept looking off…. I offered to pay a little because it took so long, and we agreed upon 100$… it was at least a 200$ tattoo…. So I still got 50% off and he got some practice warm up in without charging someone full price! Win win. 🤣 to be clear he reached out to me and OFFERED, I did not ask for a free tattoo. 😅

Why were you wondering what was happening at the second story? It's clearly a lesbian (as in f/f, we don't know the actual sexuality of the women) couple. That reaction felt so odd to me because you don't react that way if it is male/female (read My [21M] girlfriend [20f]). It came across a bit weird to me. Might be because I'm on the spectrum so I'm just curious why you were wondering that.
And I kinda think there were no a-holes there because you don't know what kind of trauma Alex has. Maybe he's on the spectrum and undiagnosed and just felt excluded because people didn't inform or ask him about things they expected he knew (or not). I can speak from experience there. But I reacted differently to it. I just asked why people hadn't invited me if they did stuff in a group that I considered myself a part of and they never even asked me. I felt like I missed the opportunities to choose. Granted, I had said no a lot before (in hindsight I was just constantly impulse overloaded) but that doesn't make it hurt less when people exclude from possible group activities because they assume you'll say no.
Or Alex could've been in situations like that a lot in the past where people promised he could come and then they'd choose a date and time without them. I also have an experience like that where a person promised to invite me to their birthday, and who was the only girl in class not invited? Me (I was 12 and really bothered by the broken promise that hurt even more because I was basically the only one excluded, just because the actual popular kids probably wanted her to do that, I see no other reason).

Also I think regardless of someone's trauma or mental illness its kinda their problem to work through things that may make other people feel bad or guilty when they others have done nothing wrong. Its not like they'd mentioned it in front of him, or forgot to fill him in on plans, or hinted in anyway that they're excluding him...even if he did feel left out he didn't have to be accusatory or guilt trippy, he could've jus asked them once, calmly if they could ask him if they were going out...but he could've got the picture if its a couple going out together date-style.

I have experience with a situation like that, but the behaviour was abusive. And it was my dad. The only thing knowing the cause did was give an explanation. I still haven't forgiven him.
And of course, the roommate doesn't have to do anything about Alex's trauma, if it's there, and there isn't much to do about it except referring him to a professional. He kinda sounds lost without directions in a way.
It's still his own responsibility to solve it, though.
I wonder if the roommate was actually in a relationship with one or both of them (cheating or polyamory)? That would explain the over-the-top reaction, possibly?
