They hyped the video to make it seem they were doing something big to clean the ocean when they admitted in a video that it won’t make any impact as there would be more plastic coming in to the ocean than it was being taking out yet they kept asking for support through donations while all this clout was sponsored
Yes! I generally appreciate Mark Rober's engineering inspiring content but this whole thing is scammy as f*ck. I'm surprised he's not getting enough backlash over this.
Honestly, Mark Rober got on my bad side after my wife and I donated well above the threshold for a free shirt during one of his charity events (Color the Spectrum). It was mentioned on the site that we should get a followup email about it. Neither of us got followup emails after, and I tried 5-6 times to get in touch with the event about it, and even pinged him on twitter several times. Absolute silence. Finally went on reddit and found a bunch of other people had the same issue, even found someone who did a chargeback over it. We are glad to have supported a cause, but its the principal of it...
Fun fact, lots of autistic people complained about the partner he picked for his autism charity live, and instead of listening to the people directly concerned, he ignored them entirely (don't remember if some got block?) And didn't change his partner for one who was supported by the community he was pretending to help. THAT'S how he ended up on my bad side.
Not sure what I was expecting when I checked in on the guy who convinced me to buy an Embody. This was actually a really well thought out and edited exposé. Congrats.
Appreciate the kind words! The video has a pretty high dislike ratio, which I think the algorithm didn't love. Can't go after the GOAT youtubers I guess
We talk about staggeringly entitled rich people who give away scraps and call it "charity", did you really expect any scrutiny from his faithful followers?
Crazy how it took until Chris got exposed before people finally started taking these criticisms seriously, because before Beast could hide behind his “oh but he gives to charity” curtain and essentially get away with anything because “well he gives people money so it’s okay”
I feel bad for people who called him out before everything was eventually found out to be true... Like the guy in 2023 on reddit or the girl who spoke her truth. No one believed them until now. I hope the backlash wasn't that bad for this guy months ago.
dude these guys were getting crucified. people forget that now that beast is getting an avalanche of people piling on but when this guy made his video there was silence and the fanboys were attacking anyone who even looked sideways at Jimmy Donaldson
Remember that all of team seas, the multi year long campaign, only removed 0.0001% of ocean trash, and with the rapid production of ocean waste, the same amount taken out of the ocean will be replenished in less than a day
They definitely could be doing more, but that is much much better than nothing. Don’t you think? I’m not excusing him, but that is still, at minimum, thousands of pounds of trash they removed.
@@coraphem_aj i would argue its way more harmful to pat ourselves on the back, and act like its done something we haven't, than to not do anything at all. all the effort put into team seas and team trees amounts to practically nothing. If a doctor came to a cancer patient, and says "congrats, after years of our chemotherapy, we've reached our goal of killing 0.0001% of cancer cells" should the patient be glad that some of the cancer is gone, or outraged over the lack of progress and the doctors acting like they've done their job? tldr; they are harmful because not only have they not done things, but they pretend they are doing things so people aren't concerned about it, and think its getting taken care of
@@coraphem_aj The problem with M4rBeast is that he does everything for view and revenue. He would use the cheapest/most profitable, or most over the top way to do good, which is usually never the best way to do good, long-term and sustainably. Why should Mark Robber waste resource and time to make a new waste collecting robot when government around the world has boats with similar mechanism to maintain. Some canals clogged up easily, and these boat will run once a week to clear out the trash already. MrBeast and Mark Robber were not doing something groundbreaking. Water quality and the problem why trash ended up in the ocean isn't just about trash in the ocean, but about nation-wide lacks of quality trash disposal. You can collect that trash to the end of the earth, but if the government has no facility to actually do something with it, it'd ended up in the soil or ocean anyway. Not even talking about how Nestle bottle alone is too much for the entire world's recycling plant to even handle, discounting any other recyclable plastic wastes. But making a robot to collect trash is cooler than funding local government, or drastically change plastic regulation. And they are promoting the favoured water which came in plastic container that is replaced every 10 days. Is it a net positive to the world? I don't know because the possible positive effect is so small.
@@John_winston There's stuff to be done but it has to be treating the issue, not the symptop and especially not go "YAY WE DID IT REDDIT" like dumbasses. What we need is funding research on the plastic-eating bacteria to use for proper disposal and abolishing all the bullshit hard to open "anti-tampering" packages that are around literally everything. (you know the one, it's the one that makes you wanna cuss it out because it won't open.)
I was really shocked when I learned that plastic "recycling" is basically just a reputation laundering scheme employed by global megacorps that produce tons of plastic like Coca Cola, Exxon, etc. It requires very specific kinds of plastics to even be possible, and even when it is possible, it is not profitable or scalable at all. I think the average person thinks that plastic recycling is legit and handles most plastic in the world which is really sad and just goes to show how powerful certain marketing language and initiatives can be. We really need to just get rid of 99% of plastics ASAP if we want to see any positive change.
yea i mean recycling was litterly something sponsored by the oil industry when people tried to hold them accountable to the damage they have done and there solution was to make "a greener planet" a personal responsibility rather then a corporate one. nothing you can do is really going to help besides voting and trying to talk to your representatives about it. we need to hold big corporations accountable for the damage they are willingly doing for short term gain's
@@devilselbowI mean did you elaborate on any reasons why you had that conclusion to them? If not, it's understandable why they thought you were a weirdo
Getting rid of plastic is impossible. The substance is simply too useful to lose. The solution is figuring out a way to biodegrade plastic waste like with specialized bacteria.
lol you're the type of person to defend jimmy if there wasnt so much proof against him. I've been speaking out against jimmy since #teamseas because it did absolutely nothing at all, it was all greenwashing and people just GOBBLED it up, people like you. And then proceed to capitalize off it with all his totally environmentally friendly companies, cuz beast burger and feastables totally doesnt create millions of pounds of plastic waste (obvious sarcasm).
What really annoyed me about team seas is that the actual amount of trash they cleaned was utterly insignificant and the money would have been better spent on keeping trash out of the ocean. On average, 33 billion pounds of plastic alone enter the ocean every year. Divide that by 365 and that roughly equates to 90 million pouds PER DAY, again, only taking into account the plastic. Team Seas raised 30 million dollars. All that campaigning, all that effort, all that money... for less than one-third of a day's worth of trash. Utterly pathetic.

You're actually incorrect that it's impossible to open, I have on multiple occasions opened them, cleaned them, and added flavor back into them. It's easy to do without damaging anything. Regardless, it's just easier to mix flavour with water than deal with circul
I love your last bit closing out the video haha I love that your info was in depth and well thought! I'm here for the chair reviews but the this was a nice informative video. Great work.
Cirkul could've literally just sold flavor packets in biodegradable packaging so you don't have to buy the whole plastic flavor thing every time- like just make the tampon thing openable, sell flavor packets that you pour in to the tampon thing instead and boom, plastic issue solved no?
i can't help but think of those little water flavoring drops you can get at any convenience store. air up and cirkul and whatever overengineered water bottle company that starts up next are just a less efficient way to put the stuff that's in those drops into water. they should sell a normal water bottle without the tampon thing, and then sell some normal flavoring packets, and just focus on making those two things good. much less wasteful, but i guess less consumption is less profitable.
I bought the and tried the Cirkul last year, the metal bottle and not the plastic one. 10 days for the cartridge is generous. Once you open it, MAYBE 3-4 days max. It starts to smell and the taste changes even if you clean the water bottle, water feeds through the cartridge. To note: I am more particular to smells and taste of waters so I may be sensitive to it. Also, higher the intensity, less days the cartridge lasts. If also is a lot of plastic. I even tried taking the cartridge apart to recycle and it was a pain. I just threw it in the trash bc it has an aluminum sleeve flavor pack
I am sensitive to the smell and taste of plain water too, so I always need some favor for it. Waterdrop tablets saved me post partum. I can't recommend them enough.

These guys both have such an obvious, carefully crafted image that they are using to push their brands. I can only assume that the end goal is money (that certainly seems to be so in Jimmy's case). Keep up the good work!
Yeah dude he probably not going to sponsor this shit product anymore. Man so many youtuber doesnt even review products that their advertising, im glad i never bought anything from yt ads
Thanks for this. It’s probably not because of mold but because the flavour packs are the business. It’s proprietary. No other cover will work with that bottle … seems pretty deliberate
And like, if you want flavour you can add some lemon or make yourself herbal tea then add ice... It's seriously so easy, way cheaper and probably better for you too. Plus you can compost tea bags.
I used to think that since I grew up on good water sources and my parents use good filtration systems for our drinking water, but after moving to another country for work, I find the drink water at my workplace horrid despite filtered and coming out of a water dispenser. I reckon it's cuz it got cheaper filter in it and the source water is hard water, so it just has this bad taste to me, where as my colleagues just think it's regular water since they grew up in that country. So now I kinda get why some people dislike the taste of plain water if they haven't had good water yet, or some people just don't like how regular plain water tastes.
I think a huge factor to this is where you live and what water is available. I've lived in a number of places and water quality is not always consistent. Even if the water is just ok, it can still take time getting used to it meaning if you're moving around a lot then the water can get jarring. So something like this could be nice if you live in a place with very bad water quality or move frequently.
Idk! I’m on the fence on this as the work for Team Seas is still valid even if you still use plastic. The goal is to reduce and minimize your footprint, that doesn’t mean you can’t have one. Cirkul should definitely come out with a screw in cap to convert the bottle when not using a flavor, but think of all the Coke, Gatorade, etc bottles that are not being used if someone keeps reusing their flavor bottle. In reality the footprint of shipping flavored drinks around (which is mostly water and significantly dense) which are inside plastic bottles, which are inside plastic bags holding bottles together is worse than people think. I’ll stick to my single metal bottle and never use disposable water bottles, but I’d vote the sponsorship is totally fine in addition to supporting Team Seas.
It was unfortunate that mr beast turned out not to be a great guy, but it would be a tragedy if Mark Rober turned out the same edit: I did not intend for all these replies, I just put a statement out there no need to say anything hateful.
Mark Rober deserves to get canceled with Mr.Beast. My guess is he started getting associated with Mr.Beast to get "child" views. Surprisingly, they both have the same core audience - kids. And Mark's company sells science kits for children. So, getting featured in arguably the largest kids channel (Mr.Beast) makes a ton of sense. Even though the science behind Rober's video can be very interesting (like compliant mechanism in the smallest gun video), science has taken a back seat in his content and things have gotten flashier to appeal more to young audiences.
I’ve got a lot of respect for people who call MrBeast out even right now, but since this is 4 months before he got called out on a wide scale, respect man!
The sad thing is Mark Rober had the BEST way to sell out: the glitterbomb decoy package. All he had to do was swap out the phones for a single CPU, four cameras, and a GPS, and then use his NASA ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE to develop a simple app to interface with it. But no. Instead of making a helpful tool to fight back against criminals, he goes all-in on a conservation ploy that does nothing.

They hyped the video to make it seem they were doing something big to clean the ocean when they admitted in a video that it won’t make any impact as there would be more plastic coming in to the ocean than it was being taking out yet they kept asking for support through donations while all this clout was sponsored

Honestly, Mark Rober got on my bad side after my wife and I donated well above the threshold for a free shirt during one of his charity events (Color the Spectrum). Neither of us got followup emails after, and I tried 5-6 times to get in touch with the event about it, and even pinged him on twitter several times. Absolute silence. Finally went on reddit and found a bunch of other people had the same issue, even found someone who did a chargeback over it.

Fun fact, lots of autistic people complained about the partner he picked for his autism charity live, and instead of listening to the people directly concerned, he ignored them entirely (don't remember if some got block?) Remember that all of team seas, the multi year long campaign, only removed 0.0001% of ocean trash, and with the rapid production of ocean waste, the same amount taken out of the ocean will be replenished in less than a day
They definitely could be doing more, but that is much much better than nothing.
@@armandbier2502guess there's really not much can be do about the trash and ocean pollution then 🗿🚬

Guess who is the biggest partner for The Ocean Cleanup? 😂 Coca-Cola
yea i mean recycling was litterly something sponsored by the oil industry when people tried to hold them accountable to the damage they have done and there solution was to make "a greener planet" a personal responsibility rather then a corporate one. nothing you can do is really going to help besides voting and trying to talk to your representatives about it. we need to hold big corporations accountable for the damage they are willingly doing for short term gain's
That will never happen
@@devilselbowI mean did you elaborate on any reasons why you had that conclusion to them? If not, it's understandable why they thought you were a weirdo

Utterly pathetic.

like just make the tampon thing openable, sell flavor packets that you pour in to the tampon thing instead and boom, plastic issue solved no?
they are too stupid
i can't help but think of those little water flavoring drops you can get at any convenience store. air up and cirkul and whatever overengineered water bottle company that starts up next are just a less efficient way to put the stuff that's in those drops into water. they should sell a normal water bottle without the tampon thing, and then sell some normal flavoring packets, and just focus on making those two things good. much less wasteful, but i guess less consumption is less profitable.
@ryanwillingham That's an astute point, classic case of greed overpowering morals with both Air-Up and Cirkul though.

What I don't understand is why people can't just drink water... Plain water... Why does it have to be flavoured?
fr, included those vape ‘fum’ flavored air, shi becomin like walle or some
And like, if you want flavour you can add some lemon or make yourself herbal tea then add ice... It's seriously so easy, way cheaper and probably better for you too. Plus you can compost tea bags.
@osiralon Damn that sounds unfortunate, hope you find something that works!
