    I leave for BMT in 2 weeks with this MOS. I’ve heard only negative things about it. From what I’ve seen it seems like the perfect fit with me wanting to be a state trooper after I get out.

      Any AFSC is good prep for civilian LE. Actually SF & MP were the worst cause they had to unlearn military law enforcement and learn civilian law enforcement.

    When I was looking at enlisting into the USAF, I wanted to go Security Forces. I was Squadron 2IC in the Civil Air Patrol, and everyday I was there I held onto that hope. Unfortunately, I cannot enlist due to medical reasons. God damn, it would've been nice to reach that dream.

    My favorite thing about anything about the SF is the comments. SF is literally security and police for the entire base. Would you laugh at a civilian officer for responding to a DV incident? Would you laugh at a civilian officer for getting his nose broken breaking up a fight?
    I mean it's just silly. Sure they aren't Navy Seals but they also don't claim to be. I really don't get why people love cops but hate SF.

    • @skyhawk_4526
      @skyhawk_4526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's probably mostly the same crowd who hate cops and hate on SF. I was both Security Police (LE) and then Security Forces (after the LE/Security merger) and went on to be a civilian cop. Obviously there are some differences, and my LE training on the civilian side was significantly more than the legal training I got at Lackland, but I'm proud to have been an SP/SF in the USAF and after nearly 30 years since I left active duty, I'm still in regular contact with about 8 of my former 77th SPS (later SFS) colleagues after we left active duty. They're some of the best guys I know and most went on to successful civilian LE careers (with one of them recently retiring as the Chief of Police of a mid-size southern CA LE agency).
      Granted, we laughed at ourselves and still laugh at some of the more ridiculous NCOs we worked for and some of the tedious tasks we had to do back then, but we all look back at our service fondly and with pride.
      My only real critiques from when I was in, is 1) the initial training at Lackland could be better (especially the areas related to laws of arrest) and 2) the selection for placement into security forces should be tighter. (The biggest problem we faced, was that a fairly large percentage of our squadron members were just thrown into the specialty with no actual desire to be in that career field. The airmen and NCOs who wanted to be there and took the mission, training and responsibility seriously, did a remarkable job protecting the base, personnel and resources, as well as competently enforcing the laws on base. I just wish we could have weeded out those who didn't even want to be there. We would have been a much more effective unit if those slugs were put into other less critical career fields (or as we used to say, "were handing out basketballs at the gym" instead of being responsible for the safety and security of the base. But that's not a criticism of Security Forces as much as it's a criticism of overall USAF administrative policies that allow disinterested recruits to go into mission-critical career fields. Unfortunately, part of that is just because there's always a shortage of folks who actually choose to become SF, and yet the USAF needs certain minimum staffing to be met - which leads them to put some less-desirable airmen into the career field.
      With all that, the good flight chiefs always knew who the good reliable troops were and posts were assigned based on that. If you were some guy (or gal) who clearly didn't take the job seriously or want to be there, you would spend your enlistment on a back gate or on an isolated part of the flightline. But if you took initiative and were doing investigations and making DUI arrests on the main gate, you could quickly find yourself working a mobile LE patrol on a regular basis even as an E-2 or E-3. It was all about your attitude and willingness to take the initiative. Good NCOs and Flight Chiefs recognized that and tended to put the best troops on the best posts.

    I was wondering how you work schedules go. Someone told me that security forces a lot of times works 50 To 60 hours a week. Do you find that to be true?

    • @UpsetToastYoutube
      @UpsetToastYoutube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      50 is very average across the board unless you are in an admin job working an 8-4:30. I am lucky and currently only work just under 50 hours a week, but that's not including 4-8 hour training days that occur on our days day off twice a month, recalls, and having to come into work for misc or supervisory role related things. If you work at a nuke base, you will be on 12 hour workday shifts plus time to arm up and post out so really 13. If you are at most other bases you work an 8 hour, really a 9 hour. I'm at a law enforcement only mission base though, so a 9 hour day will easily turn into a 12-13 hour day if an incident happens at the end of shift, like a suicide, medical emergency, or accident which is very common for training bases like mine.

    • @JE11003K

      I worked 6 on 3 off shift for almost 4 years. The first 3 days are 2nd shift, the next 3 days are 3rd shift. You waste your fist day sleeping and trying to adjust. Every deployment/TDY, I was working at least 12 hours per day. Very typical to work your shift and they pull you in for something before you can get your weapon cleared at the armory. Often when others are working an 8-4:30, you get called to stay on and help out because the regular people are off or don't work the weekends. I mean you, civil engineers! :) Every base and commander can be different. Don't forget you are the base defender. You work when everyone else goes home. You will experience some training with the Army, Navy, and Marines these days.
