Percussionists, or rather sound producers, have always been my protagonists, because unconventional sound production is at the heart of my work. I have enjoyed an inspiring collaboration with Dirk Rothbrust and the Schlagquartett Köln for many years. Percussionists have developed a great sensitivity for constantly adapting to new materials and new forms of playing. This requires knowledge of physics and material properties and the ability to imagine sounds speculatively. And an enormous musicality to make materials sing.
The fascinating thing about sound is its complexity in terms of pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre and connotation. But there are also very simple sounds that are astonishing, for example: how do the shortest impulses in a room behave when they are produced by a mallet on a stone? It is not the stone that sounds, but the mallet itself. How can the shortest impulses become music?
One instrument with great potential is the Waldteufel, which Thomas Meixner has refined to such an extent that it has an enormous sound palette. How does all this work together with an orchestra? I like to create an environment for sounds in which they can unfold as divas and be heard.
Aus dem Geröll (Out of the Scree) describes a situation in which I currently find myself. Art has always had to do with the future and now, when this is fundamentally in question? Shouldn't I be doing something else, where our house is on fire, so to speak, because man has managed to suicidally destroy his livelihood? I struggle with this schizophrenia. I know that individual imagination is more important than ever. And to listen carefully. I've always felt at eye level with sounds that don't come from the world of music. I have not subordinated them to my wishes, but have tried to put myself in their shoes, to grasp their essence and to give them a big stage.
