    My first thought with the first filter was that the woman created a filter using her face shape as the template and she had a rounder face so hearing you say that it could work for rounder face shapes validated me. I think the concept is really smart but would need to have other filters made for different face shapes.

    • @RobertWelsh
      @RobertWelsh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      Yea absolutely! It is based on the “golden ratio” and that face shape is very particular so it’s really not suitable for everyone! 🖤🖤

    • @TG-jp3tc
      @TG-jp3tc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was such a great chance to see the side by side. The bronzer side while a bit too warm looking on the hollow of the cheek, makes the face rounded whereas the contour made the face so much narrower.

    • @Deebnoff
      @Deebnoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertWelsh I think maybe it was The Body Language Guy who did the video on the Golden ratio and comparing celebrities based on this standard of beauty. It was surprising who came out as the most beautiful 😏 Definitely not the best standard of beauty by ant stretch. It like put that vampire diary kid above Idris Elba and superman guy or something like that. Uh....no... don't think so. How is Idris Elba at the bottom??? Strange... 😅

  • @nany____
    @nany____ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +726

    I usually hate those filters because, yes, they map the face and it makes easier to apply certain geometric principles but most of facial mapping (the marquardt mask being the worst) are heavily eurocentric meaning they don't work properly on different features and when they work they tend to heavily alter the face to fit into those eurocentric beauty standards instead of enhancing the person's natural features

    • @ivanajovanovic2337
      @ivanajovanovic2337 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Also the selfie camera does distort your face a bit, as seen on Robert. I wonder how it affects the way the filter perceives things

    • @Berryations
      @Berryations 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Lol an Asian is the one literally creating these apps, if you dont like it too bad, make your own… but this narrative that these are for “white ppl” bs is just something else for boring ppl with no real problems like you to virtue signal about… sigh

      @@Berryations @Laura T So you clearly didn't even look into the filter. I literally had to do a minute of googling to find the diagram of the Golden Ratio face that the filter is based on. It's based off of something created by Dr. Marquardt, who is a white man by the way, so the Asian woman who created this did not come up with the ratio the mask filter is based on. The perfect face according to the Golden Ratio is literally based on mathematical ratio as the name says, so it's more of a rigid standard than something that can be changed to suit the common, natural features of different races. Even taking race out of the equation, it's incredibly stupid to base your makeup routine off of a filter based on a mathematical ratio because the math isn't taking into account your unique facial features and how you would need to apply makeup in order to look more like the Golden Ratio face. It's like when people contour their noses, everyone has a different nose shape, so trying to shade or highlight the same areas on different noses does not make them look exactly the same. Also the Golden Ration face is definitely Eurocentric looking. It has a high nose bridge and more of a sharp nose.

      I've been wanting to try different liquid and cream contour products just to see what's out there beyond my current stash, and so many of them are orange! And as someone who's fair/light and cool-toned, I immediately bounce once I swatch them. Fenty's Amber, KVD's Modcon Gel Whatever, and the MUFE cream face palette have been the only ones I've found that are usable; the only other suitable ones I've seen are all powder formulas. 😫

    I must have the silvered ratio or the pearly ratio because golden ain’t it for me. The contour is where my blush goes. And the brows make me look feral. Thank you, as always, for experimenting for us! 💜🖤

    • @dave9401
      @dave9401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      🤣 Loved this comment. For anyone reading: the golden ratio for features is proportional to other points on your face, it's differnet for everyone and it'd be impossible to map a singular feature with the golden ratio (as the tik took girl is claiming) because it's a ratio (i.e. You need to compare the proportions of two facial features to get a ratio)

    I saw this filter the other day too and tried it…I noticed it seems to be the same place for everyone! I’m so glad you mentioned about it being so high up! I have a long, thin face. For me, that high up it makes my face look even longer!
    I love how you mentioned the gray tone in contour too! It’s funny because sooo many brands you buy contour products and they’re warm toned. I can’t believe how hard it is to find grey toned contours but there doesn’t seem to be that many even though they’re supposed to mimic shadows! I think maybe brands see how people are always using bronzer for contour so maybe that’s why? But it’s weird to me! 😂

    For the face contour, I think that one where the girl has you out a dot on that sunken part under the cheekbone and blend it out was better. It was nice because it fits everyone's face since it's not like a stencil. And you can curve or angle or whatever fits your face shape. That one I use all the time now. It is so pretty.

    As someone who has gotten to a more advanced age never having understood makeup or knowing how to apply this would be great to gain a basic of what works where, maybe not a foolproof method but more as a training guide, and having to make sure it stayed me and not what someone says I should be. I think the major problem with these filters is that they're designed for flatter faces where the camera can see more facial features front on. Those of us with thin, long, or protruding faces - our eyebrow tips and cheek bones are out of view front on and the algorithm of the template just doesn't work for us.

    I have hooded eyes where the hood goes all the way down beside my eyes and even just below so any liner past that hood is going to get pushed down and make that curve look that I’m not going for. Instead, I use eyeshadow (a deep shade for a Smokey look because that’s what I’m into right now, but I’ve used medium shades too) and a fluffy shader brush. I stamp a line making a wing and blend the inner side of the line out which is much more forgiving on my hood but still gives me the cat eye effect. I did not come up with this, I don’t know who I saw did it, but I had to adjust it because her lids were still pretty different from mine. I can now get the cute cat eye effect without my liner making that weird curve shape under my hoods instead of a straight line

    Am I the only one who appreciates these videos even more at the moment? We’ve just come out of a pandemic, and now there’s a war going on around the corner. For me these videos are the best antidote. Thanx, Robert, for keeping us all sane, and keep up the good work! ☀️

    I have to admit, I totally did not see such a vast difference between bronzer and contour until today. I have a contour cream stick, but it's definitely more warm... now to get a cool shade so I can have the benefit of bronzer and contour!

    I know this was a guide to filters, but oh my gosh if that was not the most comprehensive, easiest guide to bronzer and contouring I've ever seen at the beginning.

    Imagine it being your first time ever in TH-cam and you’re lucky enough to find one of Roberts videos. If that’s any of you- you were blessed this day. Consider buying a lottery ticket to push your luck or doing something nice for someone to thank the universe for guiding you here. Robert is lovely and his community is wonderful. You’ll be in good hands here.

    I've never used a filter. But I never like how it looks when I put contour under my cheekbones. I always place it on my cheekbones, but the low part of my cheekbones. I love who it looks once I blend it out. If I start putting it under my cheekbones it ends up too low

    Robert with the most serious face possible “Ok these are my eyebrows now” 😐 lmao. I’ve actually just reshaped mine back to an early 2000’s look. I kept seeing pics of myself and feeling something looked so harsh on me and realized my brows had grown too bushy or close together so I’ve plucked and reshaped and separated them more in the middle. Aahhh so much better for me. But yes everyone’s face is different!

    It's makeup ARTIST not makeup SCIENTIST for a reason. These filters are based on formulas that are not universally applicable whereas we should rely on human artists with specialized education, training and skills to paint our faces. Come on! Ok rant over XOXO We love you Robert!

    The contour and blush filter worked amazing for me. I didn't try the eyebrow one because my eyebrows are naturally dark and well shaped.
