@cottonmouth521 the motor was a big reason I wanted to trade from the FJ into the GX. It's bomb proof. That and 4 real doors. The buildmis coming along, with 3 large items going on in the next few weeks. Thanks for checking it out 🤙
Hello! Floridian here from hillsborough county now in the N.C. Mecklenburg county since 2021. New to the channel. Let’s share the support. Previously owned a 2016 Toyota 4Runner Limited and currently own a 2018 GX460. Great transition. Great platform for long trips, the V8 definitely better for elevation and great combo with the 6 speed transmission. Best wishes.
@Miguel.Rosado7224 I looked at 4runners when I was trying upgrade from my previous FJCruiser. The GX was the upgrade I was looking for. Glad you found the same conclusion. Welcome to the club!
just picked up a 2013 gx and i was wondering why the side steps were cut and here is my answer. Also explains why the bumper looks newer than the rest of the vehicle and not perfectly fit but with no signs of any real damage.
Invest in some fox coilovers or kings with adjustable resi’s. I had toytec and ome before always trying to save money. Then I decided to drop the money on the big boys with 700lb springs. It is definitely worth the money. I ordered through accutune and they tune/revalve them for free with purchase. When you order you tell them what the weight of your steer axle and rear axle is so they can tune them accordingly.
@heismyrefuge1027 That was the plan, but when I was ordering suspension, there wasn't anywhere near the options there are now. I was able to order the Ironman suspension with heavier coils after speaking directly to them and explaining how much weight was being added, and they've handled it well. I need to pick up some bump stops though as an added layer of protection. If I don't swap this for the GX550 next year, the plan is the get OME BP51s so I can do a little more tuning.
First of all awesome and informative video. So many good ideas about what to do with my 460. Already have a rack and gettin sliders installed tomorrow. That being said, what does the spare tire holder do to your departure angle? I like the table and ability to add some accessories, but does the extra length of the spare tire holder negate the decrease in departure angle? How did you run your electricals to the roof rack? What kind of controller for the lights are you running? Do you run your chase lights fulltime on the trail? Have you done any electrical upgrades to the rear of the vehicle? I see you have a few Lithium batteries, are you charging those en route? What abount comms - any GMRS? This video deserves more views. Subscribed!
Thank you for the kind words! I'll try to answer everything. The Rigd tire swingout does decrease your departure angel, no way to get around that. I have landed on it several times with nothing mire than light scratches. I've come down on my recovery piece a bunch, and the hitch portion is still perfect. The lighting in the rear swingout is wired into the 7 pin harness under the truck. When ordering from Baja Designs, they actually send you a pigtail with the light, so it's plug and play. The dust light get run in very dusty conditions here on the trail, but bit always. They also make great reverse lights when you're deep in the woods. I ran the wire off the roof and down the side of the rear door using KC Lights wire hider. It runs behind the tail light and then forward to the battery. The battery banks I run get charged while driving all day. I plug my fridge into the battery, then the battery into the rear if the center console where I've added a couple 12v plugs. The other battery sits on the passenger front floorboard plugged into the factory 12v, and U use that to recharge my drone, DJI handheld, phone, and whatever else requires juice. I think that covers it. Any other questions, please let me know. I'm happy to answer them!
Forgot about the comms question....I run handheld Baofeng UV-5R radios as does the rest of my travel cadre. I had real radios and CBs in my previous FJ build, but I was the only one, so it was way overkill for who I was going out with. I decided to not do a hardwired, dedicated comms set up in this vehicle, and the handheld has served me well.
@@BrunoRibeiro-ep4tb on road, about 270. I get another couple mpg back if I take the tent off, but it's so heavy I usually don't. I just haven't found a good way for two people to remove it.
@nenigma1 Good question, and no, I haven't. I did a secondary cooler in my old FJ but with this I haven't. With the bigger motor and more gears I really haven't seen a need. If I was towing as well, I would definitely add one though.
@mikemitchell9138 my attic stores 2 FrontRunner chairs, a rain jacket, and a hat. The bags underneath hold a headlamp, my 4 pack of Hardkorr lights, and my inflation devices for the air bed in the tent. I also had a small bag for all of my tire air needs, but it rattled too much there, sonits on the side panel now.
@tomshelburne7884 in this video, the truck is on Volk TE37's, 18x9 +0. The tires are Toyo Open Country ar/at trails, 275/70r18. It's currently on Ray's DR57-X'S, 17x8.5 -10. Tires are slightly larger diameter. Tons of pics with both on my Instagram under the same name if you're trying to choose tires and rim sizes.
@tomshelburne7884 in switch the the DRs when I going wheeling where there's rocks and tougher off road. The TEs are way more expensive, and after rock-rashing one in Georgia, I bought the DRs. They offer a bit more sidewall on the tire, and if I tear them up, they're cheap to replace. I've really grown to like the look or the bronze though.
@7kangher rammount.com/products/rap-b-gop2-un7u That's the Ram mount. I used a curved adhesive gopro mount on one of the blank switch locations on the console. I didn't know if it would stick very long, but it's been there for 5 years and working perfectly. These are the GoPro mounts. gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/curved-plus-flat-adhesive-mounts/AACFT-001.html
While the factory bed wasn't bad (it was better than the Smittybilt and the Tepui), it still wasn't great. I purchased and Exped Megamat Duo and it fits perfectly. I use a Foxtail usb rechargeable pump to inflate it every night. It adds about a minute to the setup and is definitely worth the upgrade. Memory foam mattress on an inflatable core...amazing.
@controlledchaos8851 I could do that I guess, but I was trying to get into why I've chosen what I did. You can search IH8MUD.COM and find my handle there, and find exactly what you're looking for. 😉

@RunYourLuck I appreciate more of a deep dive build video or gear review, so that's what I did. It's definitely not for everyone. And I tend to be a little long winded, which I'm working on. Hopefully people enjoy it and can gather some info, but if people hate it, I need to do better. I'll take all criticism, that's how we improve. For now though, I'm going to talk a lot lol.
