  • In this week's how-to home project tutorial I am sharing how I made a DIY grinder vacuum attachment for concrete grinding. While I was grinding concrete my vacuum attachment kept my house from filling with dust. The best part of this floor grinder attachment is it cost me less than $10! Supplies + links below! ⤵

    Free, Good Ideas like this make life so much easier. Look at all the leftover parts of things in your house or garage. Look around. Your Invention waits patiently, but not quite like a friendly Labrador Retriever... Thanks Gray House Studio ! You just saved me about 79 dollars.

    Worked fantastic! I used a Cool Whip container with a Diamabrush 4.5 inch concrete grinder for my basement floor prep to paint. When I needed to get right up against the edge of the cement wall, I cut away a section closest to the vacuum inlet. A little dust was getting by but it got the job done without creating a dustbowl. Your video saved me from buying the regular attachment for $60 but most important, I didn't lose time to get the job done. Thanks

      Thanks so much for the feedback! It take a surprisingly large amount of effort to slow down enough during projects to film these video and makes it worth it knowing the videos are appreciated!

    I use a bag insert on my shop vac. The ones made specifically for drywall dust are a little more expensive but make a world of difference. They keep your filter clean and make emptying the vacuum a lot easier.

    Great idea. I spent some time and built one like yours. It works excellent to collect the dust. My biggest recommendation is start with a good grinder around 8 amps or more. I used my old dewalt 5 amp grinder and it burned up to soon. Thanks for sharing your design with us👍

    So quick and versatile , clever that it sucks down to create a seal, very very well thought out , thank you , waaay better than my diy router effort in fiber glass 😀👍

    Thanks for the great idea. I cut down a margarine tub to fit my 4-1/2" Craftsman angle grinder and wrapped the pipe insulation around it like you showed. I have been grinding thinset off the concrete floor in my bath using the modified grinder connected to a shop vac. There is no dust! Before the mod, it instantly created clouds of choking, blinding dust. Yes, I wore goggles and a particle mask but it was far too much dust and it covered everything.

      J T thanks for this idea. I just modified a big cottage cheese tub and will be trying it out later today.

    Bless you for this! The thought of buying a $150 dust shroud has always driven me nuts, and this is perfect.

    • @MN-sc2uz
      @MN-sc2uz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can inexpensive shrouds under 40$ on amazon. I invested in making a dust collector instead and bought the shroud.

    Thank you so much for the tip. I cobbled one together and stripped the thinset off my dining room floor this afternoon. I had ceramic tile on plywood but the diamond grinder made short work of the thinset that remained after chiseling off the tile with an air hammer. The dust collector worked GREAT! I had all the materials on had. Cost = $0.00

      +Harry M. Thanks for the feedback on the grinder vacuum attachment! It's exciting to hear when inexpensive solutions work for more people than just us.

    Thanks for taking the time to publish this video. Your solution works like a charm. I wish there was a dust free solution for the inch of mortar that is left at the jonction of the wall. Removing the cover to finish the job produced so much dust!

      +Jean-René Bastien That is great to hear! Ya, I never know what to do in the corner. Have you ever tried using one of those oscillating tools? I bet a dust guard could be made for one of those. I might have to try that next time.

    Skip the Tupperware lid & go for chinses takeout plastic bowl instead. The bowl is perfect size and you don't need the foam. It height is just prefect and sits flush on the ground with the grinder. I cut out half inch diameter rubber hose and stuck inside the hole. Put hose clamp on inside to keep it from popping out the hole. Then duct tape the rubber hose to my vacuum hose.

    hook it up to a dust collector, the orange home store has one for around 40.00 and the dust will go into the bucket and your vacuum filter will stay clean. Nice work on the shroud!

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I need to invest in a good particle separator. Have you used the one from Home Depot? I am curious if it would work to separate concrete dust and particles from the grinder.

    Run the vacuum hose into a wet-dry vac with an extension hose fitted inside the tank and down to 0.5 inches off the bottom, then put 2 inches of water in the tank making a hookah.

    • @GrayHouseStudio

  • @AERuffy
    @AERuffy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great idea but my vacuum creates too much suction. The entire thing sticks to the ground when I turn the vacuum, you end up not being able to move the grinder. I might have to make some vent holes...

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great idea. Let us know how the vent holes work. Our shopvac wasn’t very powerful but that would be a frustrating issue.

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same problem. After realizing how much dust grinding concrete makes I couldn't find one for sale anywhere local. I guess necessity truly is the mother of innovation (AKA unnecessary duct tape utilization)

    That grinding wheel (0:50) looks too big to fit with the guard (1:00) installed. Did you end up not using the guard?

    • @GrayHouseStudio
      @GrayHouseStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great question! I purchased a diamond grinder wheel one size up from what was supposed to be on my tool, I think 7 inches. The stock metal guard allowed the wheel to attach but did not cover the entire wheel. The beauty of it was that this allowed the plastic lid to mount to the metal shield and since the lid is bigger than the wheel, the lid extended past the wheel and the foam wrapped around the wheel with a air gap so there was no rubbing.
