The best story I have about Walton is about those red line rides (think about a NBA star riding the train to the game today). My dad told me that he took the red line to work, as he often did, and suddenly this huge guy comes up and sits next to him, of course it was Bill Walton. He says that for a second he felt like a little kid again, because Bill is so much bigger than him (my dad is 5'8").

When the Celtics got to the Finals, as well as whenever they played the Fakers, the whole of eastern Massachusetts came to a standstill. It was absolutely glorious!

In the Home of the Brave documentary highlighting the 1987 season following their 86 run, they show Bill sitting with his feet in a steel tub of ice water and holding a can of Budweiser 😂

It's time to finally accept that the Walton trade was a bad trade. What happened after 86? We were competitive for 2 seasons but couldn't go all the way because our front court was injured / worn down by the end of the playoffs. Who did we trade for Walton? Our other star front court player, Maxwell. For 1987 and 1988 Max was pretty much the old Max (apart from a drop in FG% which probably would have improved playing with Bird, McHale etc).
Even at the time I didn't like how it ended with Max. He now tells the story about coming back to do radio color or whatever and he was told he'd need to apologize to Red first and he's like Red traded me I didn't trade Red. Would Red have shipped Tom Brady out in 2009 because he didn't bounce back from his injury fast enough? I realize Red is the last guy you'd think acted out of racism but I don't know, I never liked that whole thing tbh. Look at who they brought in to try to replace Max: Michael Smith / Mark Acres / Brad Lohaus - all white and mostly useless.
Furthermore, as I've become politically informed I've really grown to hate Bill Walton. That whole Dead scene is rife with CIA spooks (John Perry Barlow worked openly with the CIA and is hero worshiped by all the tech Nazis) and I suspect Walton may have worked with the USG too when he was traveling around on goodwill hoop tours. Yeah yeah Walton was maybe the best player ever but tired about hearing about 86. Just makes me think of Max and how unforgivably Red treated him and then tried to replace him with Mark Acres! F Walton the fraud. It wasn't worth it. Bad trade.

It worked good for one year. Not sure if the Celtics could of pulled off that kind of year in 86 with Max. If Bias had lived, the Celtics could have repeated in 87 and 88, then this discussion probably wouldn't happen.

@Barry White Walton was "the difference" in 1986 in the same way Maxwell was the difference in 1984. Max was injured in 1985 - Red just decided he loafed coming back (but even today players tend to need an entire season AFTER returning from major injury to return to form). McHale was much better at just Power Forward than he was when he was splitting time at F and Center (thus his entering the stratosphere statistically AFTER Max left and he started to play only Forward), but again this only lasted a season with Walton. By 1987 Robert's only sub was Greg Kite. Which was more important - Kevin's dominance at Power Forward (when you had DJ, Danny, Robert, and later Reggie, all taking fewer shots than they should have taken per game) or Kevin's importance at backing up Robert at Center? Because I say we could have beaten the Rockets without Walton but we ended up losing Max forever for that one year.
DJ died of a broken heart when Larry hired Carlisle as his assistant and not him.

@Barry White No Max could have come off the bench but often it would be to replace Parish and McHale would move to Center for that time and his production would slip but like I said who cares?
As far as DJ he coached in the NBA for a decade, he was an extremely cerebral player, and it's known he was hurt picked Carlisle instead of him.
