Bill Walton used to play basketball in Wallace Park back in Portland Oregon before the trailblazers won the 76-77 championship, he would always sign autographs and play a bit of basketball with us kids, it was a great time to be a kid..

Trent Reznor and Bill Walton are the two men who I have loved since i was in the single digits. It troubles me that I’m 40…..but the past three decades are two different stories of resilience.
I had the pleasure of yelling QUACK QUACK with Bill in Berkeley and Eugene. Bill’s positivity and eccentricity was always genuine amidst struggles that would have broke me.

I was born right near Bill Walton's home.
Bill had a teepee in his backyard, and I was fortunate to meet Bill at an ATM (in this particular neighborhood).
I really enjoyed listening to Bill doing color-commentary on NBA games.

We ran the horse trail at Roosevelt Jr high that went behind his house. We saw him often in his backyard.

I was an undergrad at Oregon when Bill got drafted by the Blazers. When he was fighting w/ the Blazers & the NBA over his long hair, I was in a lawsuit w/ Oregon for depriving me a right to an education because my hair was too long.
Coincidentally, while Bill's hair was red & mine was brown, we both had curly hair & could have been brothers.
My phone rang at my house one day, & the gravelly voice asked, "Is this George? This is Bill Walton, I play for the Trailblazers. Don't know if you know who I am."
He'd seen the TV interviews & newspaper articles about the lawsuit & thought 'I needed an ally & besides that, you look like you could be my little bro. (He was only 6 months older than me.)
And, brothers need to stick up for each other.'
That began a friendship that has lasted nearly 50 years. Like brothers, once again, I've been on a nearly 4 yr journey w/ cancer, too.
I got a reprieve a few months ago, when I learned the 3rd incidence of cancer, a liver tumor is completely gone. The original throat cancer in my R tonsil took surgery one year, then chemo & rad, the next to erase.
Bill wasn't as fortunate... gonna miss the big guy.

San Diego Legend. So glad I got to meet, chat with him at a Dead and friends concert, June 2004, @Cricket Center, Phoenix on the lawn between acts. Truly, he gave me his undivided attention and was happy I could share a story about the 1981 Clippers.

I highly recommend his autobiography, "Back From The Dead." In it, he goes into detail about all his injuries, which, essentially, were genetic defects. He wasn't just injury-prone; he had actual abnormalities in his bones. So knowing that, what he was able to accomplish on the floor makes it all the more impressive. And when it came time for him to play for the Celtics in that '85-'86 season, he had no business playing professional basketball anymore, yet there he was -- somehow winning the Sixth Man Award. It blows my mind! It makes you think just how much more incredible he could have been had he been born with a structurally sound body.

Bill would love concerts. Saw him at Santana, John Legend and ZZ Top shows in San Diego. You definitely could spot him when he walked to his seat towering amongst everyone there. Everyone in attendance would yell “BILL”! He would wave at everyone. He was gracious, lived locally and was loved in San Diego just as much as 2 other local legends Tony Gwynn and Jr Seau. Met Bill in person exactly once when I was a lowly producer/engineer for a sports talk show in local radio and he was really nice even in our brief exchange. Wish I’d had more of a chance to get to know him. Everyone seems to have good things to say.
I grew up in NYC a fan of all the city's sports teams and when life took me to other places, I never adopted the local teams and continued to root for the NYC teams...with one exception. That was when I lived in Portland, Oregon for 3 years during Bill's championship time with the Blazers in the 1970s.. He turned me into a Trailblazer fan and the Knicks moved one spot down the list. To this day at the same age as he was on his passing yesterday, he is my NO. 1 sports hero of all time passing even Mickey Mantle.
An avid all sports fan throughout the last 65 of my 71 years, I have never received so much gratification rooting for a team as I did for Bill's championship run with the Blazers, and also in the following season when the defending champs were even better -- going 50-10 in the first 60 games before Bill got hurt and the season was over. His play defined the expression which now defines Superstar and MVP - i.e. he gigantically elevated the game of every one of his teammates. I have never seen an athlete have 2 seasons as great as Bill's last 2 years in Portland.
A great man on and off the court - in fact I lived 2 blacks from his residence for a year, and I woke up early a few times to open my blinds - and Bill was outside my window in our parking lot teaching a dozen or more very young kids how to juggle and other fun skills, and they were enjoying a great moment in their youth. I am not a religious man so I can't offer an RIP, but I loved Bill Walton as a player and as a great human being, and we have lost one of our very very best people!
I was in complete shock when the news broke headlines. I was just discussing him and now he’s gone. It’s crazy. He was a bright, humorous, talented human being who dedicated himself to the game of basketball. Fun fact: He is the only brother-brother combination to perform in the NBA Finals as well as the Super Bowl with his brother Bruce. May he Rest In Paradise.
Bill and the Conference of Champions go down together. As honorably and fitting as it should be. Bill was the Pac-12. He will be its legacy and so much more. RIP Bill.

An amazing player in college. Perhaps the best two-way player I ever saw. The pro’s were a different story except for that wonderful year of 1977-78. Nothing anyone could do when the problem is orthopaedic and chronic. Bill was the Bobby Orr of basketball. Rest well.
Fare you well I love you more than words can tell
His stellar Trail Blazers run, being the best player in the league, exciting, team-oriented, giving the smaller city Portland its only major professional sports championship. Then the beautiful basketball with the Boston Celtics, a perfect two-man game with Larry Legend (like playing with "Picasso," as he said), gutting through his injuries to have a few precious moments on the floor. Then his commentary where he showed his endless enthusiasm for excellent basketball and his distaste for "terrible" shots. Then his later years sharing his passion for the game, the Grateful Dead, and life. A beautiful man who lived a very full life.
As a Lakers fan I was disappointed with Bill Walton for a short time when he signed with the Celtics but I couldn't stay upset with him. I always admired him, rest in peace big man.

Rip Bill Walton. Always enjoyed when he did color commentary on Cal basketball games in the Pac 12. Also as a kid growing up in 3 Rivers California heard that he enjoyed hiking in Sequoia National Park way back when.
Bill was probably the most Berkeley guy who never attended Berkeley. I've got the (in)famous glockenspiel bit downloaded for the occasional laugh in case it ever disappears from TH-cam.

Back in the 70's it was said that Bill's bad feet came from his vegetarian diet. Lack of protein along side his brutal basket schedule for 15 years.

A great basketball player who epitomized what being a great player and a great teammate was all about. I find it ironic that he has died in the midst of watching his beloved Pac 12 conference pass away at the same time due to death by chronic greed. By all accounts, Bill Walton was an intelligent, self-deprecating, funny, and thoughtful human being. And one hell of a basketball player......his NCAA championship game against Memphis remains the best performance in final four history, surpassing even the 55 points Princeton's Bill Bradley scored against a depleted Wichita State team in the consolation third place game in the 60's. I just think that he, when healthy, had the best combination of center position skills of anyone I've ever witnessed. Rest in Peace.....you will be missed. In a footnote to Princeton defeating Wichita State, Dave Stallworth, the Shockers do everything All-American, ran out of eligibility at the end of the regular season. One of the strangest rulings in NCAA baketball history (and that's saying something).

So original, legendary player of course, just wish someone in TV could have figured out how to get him a 2 minute segment at halftime or somewhere - his mind was too chaotic for color commentary during the game - but a real missed opportunity if he had a different shorter segment, like a recurrent guest on a talk show.
Being on Letterman's TH-cam channel is akin to meeting the Grim Reaper.

I saw Bill bike by in North Park 40 years ago in the offseason. I said hello, but he was busy troubleshooting something on his bike. Would have loved to talk with him. RIP
