  • INDIANAPOLIS -- Rick Carlisle tells stories about Bill Walton and playing with him on the 1986 Celtics. Walton died at 71 on Monday after a battle with Cancer.
Carlisle and the Basketball Hall of Famer were teammates on the Boston Celtics for two seasons during the 1980s, including the Celtics' 1986 title-winning team.
But Carlisle's story wasn't about the days of yore on the parquet hardwood of the old Boston Garden. His tale included Walton, Walton's beloved Grateful Dead and an unforgettable first date.
"I have him to thank probably for being married to my wife, Donna. Our first date was to a Dead show in Washington, D.C. I called Bill and, this is 1987," Carlisle said. "I said 'Look, I got a date with a girl who I think is pretty cool. I'd love to go to the Dead show ... I don't have any tickets. Can you help?'"
Carlisle recalled that Walton had specific instructions to go to the back door, ask for a certain individual and told him to say, "You're Rick Carlisle from the Boston Celtics," and followed up with a "everything will be just fine." Walton hooked Carlisle up with all-access laminated passes ("one said 'Bill Walton' and one said 'Susie Walton'"). Carlisle wound up meeting the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart later on.

It has to be the most surreal day for Carlisle, remembering being on a championship team with Walton and the Celtics, before coaching to try to stop them from advancing to the Finals.

I've watched every video they've had about Walton's passing. Everyone paying tribute to him comes across as 100% sincere. You have to believe that Walton was a great human being. I'm a Sixers fan, so it took me awhile to warm to him, but I certainly did. Were it not for the injuries, he absolutely could've been the GOAT.

The 1986 Celtics were the most fun team to watch probably in NBA history. MJ was great and the Bulls but the chemistry on that team will never be matched.

The Celtics played the game the way it is supposed to be played, where brains outweighed athleticism, and us Celtics fans loved it every game.

I've always been a big fan of Bill Walton, the more stories that are coming out, the more of a fan of his whole way of being. His book Back From the Dead is an amazing and inspiring story. The 30 For 30 on him is the best in the whole series. And his throwaway mention by Kareem in Airplane is one of the best lines in the whole movie. He was pretty good at basketball as well, as Kareem's line attests. Fare thee well, Bill.

The way Rick was describing that 86 Celtic team with Bill Walton, he was there, he practiced with real legends and incomparable with today's lousy teams. Sure there's a player here and there like Kawhi when he's healthy but the players generally suck.
The watered down rule changes. Not the same.

Great stories. Lots of great players in their era. But….none of them would be playing in today’s NBA. It’s simple evolution. They aren’t as big, strong, fast, agile, can’t jump with those T’Rex’s today. They wouldn’t make a team.

@lloydbonafide3398I wouldn't doubt it a bit either. I remember and Bill Russell's first autobiography, Go up for glory, he said there were times he felt the Celtics deserved to lose, even though he had to help him win. He said he couldn't admit that to his teammates, cuz he had too much influence on the team.
And Wilt said something similar a few years later. When the Lakers played the Bulls in the Western conference playoffs. The Lakers came from behind late in the fourth quarter. Wilt blocked a couple shots, Goodrich got a key basket or two. But Wilt said The Bulls out played the Lakers the whole game up until then and he felt they deserve to win.
      So yeah you're probably right.
