I'm not in the market for an i20N, let alone an IONIQ 5 or 6, but I give Hyundai a lot of credit not just for their adoption and development of decent EV platforms but also their designs - they're making EVs that look eye-catching. I trust that the days when Hyundai (and KIA) were viewed as cheap Korean tat are long gone.

@@wolfgangpreier9160 How can they make a reasonable profit on these car if they lower the price? That's the issue with BEVs. They cost a lot to make. Tesla can lower prices because they don't put in a lot of the NVH materials and they have a lot of automation and only sell BEVs. But I don't think Hyundai can and not sell the cars at a loss.

I am at odds on the style of the exterior, mainly the side profile and spoiler, but well done to Hyundai on the safety. 97% is huge and having seen a lot of tests, the way it handled it is impressive. This is one of the benefits of, for frontal impact especially, an electric car. No engine gives you a lot of room for crumple zones and absorption of forces. I like it.

@@TheLateBrakeShow add more batteries then degradation is less, but energy going in and out battery increases expoenentially in practiclal use situation, so whats best size for longveity? small combustion that can run without battery, cna charge electric drive slowly for cheap onwership overall and ability to do unexpected trips etc without fast charging worseneing battery range if any such charging is even possible, most cannot charge at all because charge systems not there or local electric grid cant handle it. they dont recycle battery while petrol is from pools of thick liquid as byproduct of anaerobic bacteria, like human donating blood, it wont run dry as long as dont take too much at a time. but most emissiosn hurt human who breathe into it because its nearby, most smog and acid rain is not problem and probably lot of it just escapes into low pressure space beyond earth atmosphere, so plugin hybrid wont fart in dense population slow speed areas as its trying to be effceint to lower ownership cost. see aptera onwers club on saftey, light weight is better, especially for people in weak cars involved in crash, and weight worsens road wear and ability to carry momentum around turns for longveity of parts per tire microplastic emissions of tire wear (harms to hormones, lack of tire recyclablity and rubber tree growth). also why not lotus emira and mclaren, sell hydrallic steering system to otehr companies maybe with a electric support system that can be added, at least so it can bea option inworld where there isnt much difference between cars? the value of it is not just enjoying driving to incentivise actually paying attention to whats going on for saftey, but also with effceint driving fun includes minimal braking yet minimal g forces in turns etc. hydrallic pedals interface even on eelctric pedal acutators , pushes back the more you push in, making it easy to hold position on pedal without much msucle strain and discourage ovr powering and braking and give confidence on how much engine or braking power is left esepcailly when theres no naturally aspirated engine sound. aritifical sounds should have base haviness correlate with pushing power(torque), higher pitch sound with avrage wheel rpm, loudnes with energy output level, option for each powered wheel having its own sound profile to hear torque vectoring, option for much quiter base heavy sound different from torque sound for braking torque, optional sound file personalization (lexus lfa, gembala porsche carrera, gma t50, honda goldwing inlne 6, inline3 with clairty of k series, x20 connaught, buggatti, bmw ix, classical music theme, loudness level choices, etc). sound regulation disallow loud engines, but not some loudness inside car. media influences demand and has more connection to company than most others, you are media and other media may help at least in exchange of arranging mutual acesss to cars or something.

If I was in the market for an EV (and I really wish I was!) I drove the original "windknife" Ioniq for 4 years until summer, when the lease was up and I switched to an EV6. Damn, I miss that efficiency, but the range wasn't fun for driving highways through Europe. The Ioniq 6 would be the perfect marriage of the original's efficiency and the new battery size & charging speeds, but somehow I think that Hyundai missed an opportunity by not giving it a hatch back just like the original Ioniq.

About efficiency of the EV6 AWD! Just made my 10‘000 km since May 2022, including German Autobahn, track days on Anneau du Rhin, Swiss mountain routes and short distance drives this great car used 16,8 kWh on 100 km. A similarly equipped EQE350 used 23 kWh on about the same total distance. Keep in mind that the EV6 is not the small Hyundai Ioniq back in time and plays in another league now. This change happened in just one generation! Never seen that before in my 54 years driving ‚premium cars‘ mainly British, French and then German.😎🇨🇭

So at 4.4miles/kWh it has very similar real world efficiency to a Tesla Model 3 RWD. Battery chemistry is important now too. The Ionic 6 may have a 78kWh battery, but because it is NCA, it can only be regularly charged to 80%, and shouldn’t be taken below 20% on a regular basis. That, and charging speed, is something that should become part of any EV review. It is more important than any 0-60 time.
I like your reviews Jonny. A passion for cars mixed with a practical approach.

Given Jonny was only getting 3ish mi/kWh in the cold I wonder if 4.4 is really going to be possible.
It's a shame, the difference between that and what I can get with my 28kWh 'wind knife' in this weather means it's about 30% less efficient than the 6 year old car (might only be 20% worse in the summer....) I'd love Hyundai to do one with smaller wheels and a smaller battery and sell it for a chunk less than a Model 3. Make it lighter and with less inefficient wheels and they ought to be able to increase the range above this one!

Great review. I love the look of all the Kia /Hyundai EVs and have test driven both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 recently as I have been doing some research for my next car. The design language that Kia /Hyundai are using is interesting and much better than some of the bigger / legacy companies (the BMW comes to mind...its like a 3/4 series but not a 3/4 series)
For me I need the room (I have older parents, young niece, mountain bikes, golf clubs) to cart around at times so the 6 unfortunately might not offer what I need despite its looks (also for me having a roof rack on an EV kinda defeats the purpose of its aero shape and will eat into the range really quickly) but your comment about it being a better drivers car than the 5 is interesting. I too found the 5 rather plush and languid and when I pushed it, it had a lot of roll.

It seems like they have listened to a lot of critique and design improvements from the Ioniq 5. the seatbelt holder. the black screen surround. the steering wheel buttons switched placement. the metal handles instead of plastic, the more settled suspension and so on. bravo! but I don't want the Ioniq 6, I want the Ioniq 5 with these changes implemented! why not update/Revise the Ioniq 5 with these small changes?

This and the other E-GMP cars are a revelation. Finally a car company that brings their concept cars to the road and is not promising a bright future with nothing in their hands. Look for Stellantis, GM, Audi, Mercedes or Volkswagen. All bring hot air but no outstanding real product that is so well balanced in every aspect. Others ask three times more just for mostly the same. The young Koreans not only influence music but the modern design away from boring SUV-tanks. This is new, fresh and has emotion. After 54 years of ‚premium cars‘ costing me a fortune an EV6 AWD now reminds me Aston-Martin, Jaguar E-Type, Lancia, Alfa-Romeos in their best time. Besides that the company cleverly has three portfolios covering different aspects and products that are not looking alike but use the same classy technology!😎🤓🇨🇭

I like the style of Ioniq 5 but this car has smoother ride because of its aerodynamic shape and better regenerative braking. It also has more sensors to protect against scratches and dings. Very well spec'd with great efficiently and heat pump as standard. But I think Hyundai need to look at there pricing on the ioniq 6, at £46k it's more expensive than a Tesla Model Y. Get the ioniq 6 under £40k and it's in a league of it's own.

There's really a lot to love about this car. Efficiency and V2L (which sets it apart from Tesla) are probably the most important ones. I have my reservations about cars that beep at me without the possibility to turn if off though. I'm also not a fan of the stupidly big wheels most EV manufacturers feel we should want. No more than 18" wheels for me please (at most). Why make efficiency (i.e. range), comfort and acceleration worse than it has to be? And why increase running costs because of expensive tires that wear out faster? Don't get me wrong, I'm a tolerant guy but I wish the auto marketing departments would give us a break from their mandatory rubber fetish party and their "Let's see who has the most inches" competition.
I also still have a bit of mixed feelings about the design. Some lines and elements are beautiful while others sting a bit in my eyes. I think I could learn to like it but it's not the instant love I had with the Ioniq 5. I generally agree that the idea of making every new model unique and characterful is commendable though.

My wife is currently using a Tesla in Northern Ireland for work, she is working in the medical industry. Unfortunately as good as EVs are, the infrastructure of chargers are the key to their success. Some real world experiences we have had are only 1 Tesla dealership with only 4 superchargers available, no charging facilities in the country outside of cities, battery loss of charge overnight during the winter, chargers not working and spending weekends charging the vehicle for work on a Monday. Range anxiety is real and for me, they have put the horse before the cart in Europe and Australia, two countries that I have lived in. USA seems to have a better infrastructure from what I have seen. As much as the Tesla is great to drive not worth it for us. Electricity ⚡️ is also expensive.

I have an Ioniq5 and absolutely love it. It’s the best new car I’ve ever owned. I have a Model 3 as well (my partner’s car) and I strongly prefer the Ioniq5. The Model 3 has better headlights and better efficiency but the Ioniq5 is so much nicer to drive and so much more practical. And the looks. It looks like nothing on the road.
I prefer the interior of the Ioniq6 over the 5 and the efficiency is better than the 5 (although not that much better in the real world, at least from the early reports I’m hearing). But, I so enjoy the looks of the Ioniq5 exterior and I’m not sure I even like the looks of the 6. Especially the back. I’m reserving final judgement until I see it in person, but just comparing pictures I think the Ioniq5 looks lightyears better than the 6.
I like to drive and take corners, and while the Ioniq5 has some body roll, it is still extremely competent and confident in corners. The suspension is tuned for every day use and comfort, but because EVs have such a low center of gravity, they can make the suspension softer than a typical ICE vehicle of the same weight. I think the Ioniq5 has excellent suspension tuning for a daily driven car driven on typical roads. If you want something that is better at carving corners and you’re willing to give up ride comfort for it, then the EV6, the Ioniq6 or maybe the upcoming Ioniq5 N would be a better option for you, but I would in no way say that the Ioniq5 is too soft.
